Where Am I? (or WAI for short) is a small application that interfaces your Bluetooth GPS receiver with map software (recently with Google Maps Mobile - GMM).

What it recently does is query GPS about your current location and then tells GMM to show that position on the map, giving you a taste of real GPS based navigation software.

With society pushing us to be online and available in our every waking moment, it is hardly surprising that there are a plethora of instant messaging programs available for PDAs and mobile phones. IM+ offers connection to a wide range of networks without becoming too bloated or over-complex. The first thing we noticed after installing IM+ was the simplicity of its user interface. As soon as the program opens, you can get to work configuring your accounts. IM+ lets you access the popular MSN Messenger, Yahoo Messenger, ICQ, AOL (AIM), Jabber and Google Talk networks, meaning that whoever you need to stay in touch with, IM+ will be able to help you out.

On Windows applications featuring such a range of connectivity, it’s normal to see a complex list of options when the configuration process starts. IM+ simplifies the process of setting up your accounts, and beyond message alerts, contains practically no options to configure. This may put off more advanced users who enjoy tinkering with their accounts but we thought it was a good move on the part of Shape Services (IM+’s creators). The only problem we noticed when setting up our account details was that the ‘backspace’ key on our device’s touch screen keyboard didn’t work. This is of course a small issue, but it slowed us down when we made a mistake.

The contact list display (or ‘Roster’) in IM+ should be immediately recognisable to anyone who’s used an instant messenger service before. Giving you the choice of whether to view all your contacts or just those online, IM+ also sorts your contacts by groups if requested. Selecting an online contact immediately initiates a chat with them, while the holding your stylus on the contact will provide some limited options referring to that contact, such as ‘rename’, ‘delete’ and ‘info’. We were disappointed that ‘info’ didn’t try to display a contact’s full profile rather than just their email address. We thought that a more full extract of the contact’s online profile would have been useful, at least including their birthday, homepage and interests.

Entering the text for sending messages was simple enough. IM+ allows you to copy and paste text from other applications into your chat window; particularly useful if you’re using the program to collaborate on a work project, or even just to send your friend a link. IM+ also supports the most popular emoticons for instant messaging, for those times when words just can’t convey your feelings.

Up against some stiff competition, IM+ is an excellent chat program for your Palm PDA. While it has a couple of small issues and omissions, it is easy to use, relatively small and very stable. In other words, an excellent way of staying in contact even when you’ve got a good excuse not to!

The strength of the Palm OS has always been its ability to help you quickly record useful data while you're on the move.

If you're a geography student or someone who wants to know precise geometric locations of different places then GeoDB will allow you to store this kind of data quickly and easily. It doesn't actually contain any information on locations of places on the Earth when you install it, but rather is a database designed specifically for recording this kind of information.

Although not particularly advanced, the GeoDB interface is very straightforward. To add a new location you just hit the 'New' button and enter the name, latitude, longitude, elevation, and GMT offset (you can omit any of this information if you want). Once stored, you can quickly categorize, search for, edit or delete the entry.

Viewing the information within GeoDB isn't particularly exciting and there's no support for maps or pictorial references. However, the main point of the program is that you can export all the data into other geographic applications such as Google Earth, when you're at a computer. Unfortunately, there's nothing within the program that explains how you can do this automatically.

If you're someone who needs to log geographic information on a regular basis then GeoDB is likely to come in very useful.

RSS feeds have revolutionised the way news is published and read. The easy to use syndication system has made it easier than ever to read your news wherever you like - especially on the move. With SplashNews, you can download the latest content from your favourite news site or blog in seconds, from anywhere.

The design of the application is simple and clean and it's pretty easy to open the preset feeds or add your own to the index. We had a couple of problems getting SplashNews to sync at first but once it's up and running, it performs fairly well. The program is ad-supported freeware, much like Google Reader, which is arguably a better alternative if you can be online all the time.

We enjoyed SplashNews's ease of use and simple design but would recommend trying some online services: they can be even better, and take up less room on your PDA.

KwikMaps allows you to select an address from within Contacts application and loads Google Maps page in your web browser, showing the location of the selected address. Useful for reaching friends, favourite shops/restaurants, etc. An Internet connection is required for your handheld/smartphone to load Google Maps page.

KwikMaps cooperates with Contacts application (formerly called Address Book), which is present on most Palm OS devices. In the contact details view, open Contact menu, then tap Connect. You will see a list of available services for Quick Connect. Tap on the contact's address and KwikMaps will open the web browser and load Google Maps, showing the map for the selected address.
