Although realistic and faithful to the game, this Counter-Strike wallpaper isn't exactly revolutionary, but it does the job. Featuring 3 characters in full get-up, as well as a prominent view of their impressive weapons, the wallpaper isn't very eye-catching, but it does capture the game well.

This is precisely what you can do with WeGame. This application is actually the official software client for the WeGame site, a Youtube-like website where players from all over the world share their most valuable gaming deeds on the Internet. The client only supports a closed list of games, but many of them are real hits such as Call of Duty 4, Hellgate London, Half-Life 2 or World of Warcraft.

WeGame works in a very simple way: set the hotkey to start and stop recording and let it running in the background while playing your favorite game. When the glorious moment arrives, hit your hotkey and WeGame will start recording everything. The program can only record videos in AVI format, but at least you can edit them later on with your favorite video editor.

Once you've finished working on the video, use WeGame to upload it to the Web. You'll need to create a user account in the WeGame website but it only takes a couple of minutes and it's totally free.

Though limited to a short list of games, WeGame is a great tool to record your greatest victories in your favorite videogame and share them online.

PlaneShift is a role playing game set in a mystical medieval fantasy world, where you start off as a pauper in search of fortune. It isn't, however, a game that you can just download and get going straight away. First you need to register on the developer website and then you'll have to spend a while going through the user manual. PlaneShift is a pretty complex world where the developers ultimately aim to mix real world politics and economic problems to create a very realistic but very difficult to follow world unless you log on regularly.

As in games such as Second Life, while you are logged off, your possessions and progress continue in real time which is why you have to regularly log on to avoid being destroyed, especially within the early stages. At the moment, you can explore the virtual world, interact with other players or with server controlled creatures, fight monsters, cast spells, solve quests and puzzles, improve your character, gain magical items and more.

The plus side of PlaneShift is that it's entirely free to play, which is unusual for a 3D MMORPG game of this size. You're also not limited by budgetary constraints or game limitations - you can expand your world as far as your imagination will take you. Alternatively, if combat isn't your cup of tea, you can just live as a ordinary citizen in the game although this doesn't offer half as much thrill as pillaging and invading your neighbors.

The downside of all this is that PlaneShift is prone to bugs, crashes, slow server times (because they rely on sponsors to provide them) and by the developers own admission, it's not complete as yet.

That said, for a free 3D MMORPG game, PlaneShift is a very worthwhile option for those on a limited budget or those that don't want to feel compelled by money to keep playing regularly.

Having started out back in 1999, Counter-Strike Online is far from a cutting edge FPS game. Despite its age, and much like ID's Quake, the game survives due to its essential playability. It may not be sophisticated, but Counter-Strike Online is fast, fun to play, and has a massive community of players. Once you have a free account, it's easy to sign in and get shooting in moments. Its age means Counter-Strike Online runs smoothly on most PCs, as its requirements are really low.

Counter-Strike Online is played over a variety of maps, and is a team based multiplayer FPS. Players either join a team of terrorists or counter terrorists, and battle it out. To the Original mode, Death Match, and Team Death Match modes, there are additionally Zombie Mode 2, Zombie United Mode, Zombie Mode 3, Challenge Mode, Zombie Survival Mode and VIP Mode, some of which require micro-payments to unlock.

Counter-Strike Online is a classic FPS online multiplayer FPS, and deserves its place in history. while it looks its age, this version adds lots of fun add-ons and a dynamic community of players to get involved with.

Steam is a game and download/update manager from Valve, the creator of Half-Life.

Allowing you to buy and download any of Valve's games, like the recent, fantastic Left 4 Dead 2, Steam also has a huge library of titles from other big developers, as well as free demos and videos. The list of games is ever increasing, and it also supports non-commercial things like game mods.

Installing and setting up a Steam account is really easy, and the download manager is very stable. Whatever your internet connection speed, you don't need to worry about stopping a download partway through. If you exit Steam, it will continue your downloads the next time you start it without complaints.

This new version of Steam has a much improved interface, with a better news stream and cleaner overall feel. The layout is much simpler, allowing you to quickly navigate between games, available demos and videos. There's a game wishlist feature, and your game library now has real time search and customizable categories.

While you miss out on a box or instruction booklet by buying games from Steam, you do get all the latest patches and updates downloaded automatically. There are often exclusive demos and offers available through Steam too, and there's a great community service which allows you to join groups and find people to play online. Its major downfall is that the client auto-updates far too often.

Steam may not sell every game under the sun, but it's an excellent download application featuring some of the best PC gaming you can find, and the best community features found in PC gaming.

The episodes are the biggest draw, expanding and continuing the fantastic story of silent scientist Gordon Freeman. Each episode has about 6-8 hours of gameplay in it, and while many questions players have from the end of Half Life 2 are answered, many more are asked.

The Half-Life 2: Episode Pack is full of the same mix of puzzles and action that made the first two games so compelling, although these have much more impressive graphics. As the story does follow from the previous games, it's best for people to play Half-Life 1 and 2 first!

Both episodes in the The Half-Life 2: Episode Pack are good, but the second is the best of the two, as the plot is better paced and the gameplay feels more balanced. The first sometimes feels a bit stretched, but it's still an excellent first-person shooter.

Essential for fans of the series, and highly recommended for others, The Half-Life 2: Episode Pack is a great addition to one of the best loved games of the 21st century so far.

The game starts at night, as you and your team try to get to the subway from a roof. As you enter the first building, you can only see with your torch beam. Lightening reactions are necessary to whirl round and dispatch the zombies that hurtle towards you. The only time you'll feel at all comfortable is when you whole team is firing, giving you enough light to see by.

We played the Left 4 Dead demo with one player, so the rest of the team was AI controlled. They seem quite effective, though obviously it will be better with four humans. Keyboard and mouse controls work perfectly well, the graphics and physics are great and the sound is terrifyingly good. Guns sound great, the only reassuring sound in the game, and the moans and groans of distant and unfortunately not distant enough zombies keep up the tension.

Left 4 Dead is definitely an adult game, with a lot of blood, gore and expletives. Fans of horror will love it, unless you're of the opinion that running zombies are an offense to zombie-lore in general. The speed of your attackers give the game a real sense of panic, indeed you find yourself shooting out of fright more than anything else.

Left 4 Dead is a fantastic, fast paced and horrifying first person shooter, which deserves to be played by everyone who dares.

Imagine a huge games arcade where thousands of dedicated game players can gather to do battle. That’s what GameSpy Arcade attempts to offer in a virtual world where game is the name and variety is the aim.

GameSpy started life by simply helping Quake users find a functioning sever to log onto but today, it has developed into a world of gaming in its own right. The developer claims that millions of gamers meet online on GameSpy to play the hundreds of online multiplayer games and free demos it’s linked to. They also claim the all-in-one interface offers the fastest game servers available – up to 60% faster than in-game browsers. Plus, it already features integrated texting, voice chat and instant messaging – eat your heart out SecondLife.

After installation, the program scans your PC for any installed games you have and lists those which are GameSpy compatible. All the major games such as Counter-Strike and Age of Empires are supported. The key feature of GameSpy is the Buddy List, which means you’re almost always guaranteed someone online to play with or against (depending on how many buddies you’ve got of course!) Using an engine called ‘PlayerSpy’, it gathers together all those friends that are online. You can see which chat room they are in and what game they are playing. If you fancy dropping in on their action, just click on their location to be instantly taken there. You can also send an instant message, start a voice conversation or send a game invite.

The other key feature of GameSpy is a searchable server filter (SmartSpy) which enables you to find the right server for the game you want in seconds. Popular dedicated-server games like Half-Life have literally thousands of game servers available and SmartSpy helps you pinpoint the best one for you in a matter of seconds. Just select the type of game you want to play and GameSpy Arcade will download data from and ping only those servers. For those that simply like to keep abreast of the latest games, GameSpy also offers DemoSpy - a daily updated list of the latest releases, supplied to them by FilePlanet which saves you registering with the latter. This also includes a handy patch section to keep your games updated.

The drawbacks can be summarised in two words – advertising and resources. From the minute you open GameSpy you are bombarded with advertising from developers hawking their latest games, which becomes rapidly tiresome. In addition, GameSpy tends to be very heavy on your CPU. If you’re playing on an older machine, forget about running anything else alongside it – it simply hogs your CPU to deal with the heavy graphics.

In summary, if you frequently find yourself without gaming companions, GameSpy Arcade is worth it for that reason alone – it’s a great way to make friends too. If however you’re dedicated to just one or two games and you regularly log on with others, the advertising and resource-hogging mean you can probably do without this.

If you like Manga comics and cartoons then you'll love this game which takes Manga style characters and puts them in a never ending fantasy world.

For starters though - there's no Manga style sex and porn involved although there is plenty of Manga style action. Lunia is basically an action-packed arcade game that you can play entirely by keyboard if your fingers can handle it to create all manner of combination attacks as you slice your way through the kingdom of Lunia. The game is split into various sections and stages - Main Stage, Side Dungeon Stage, and Raid Dungeon Stage with Raid Monsters. The game combines 2-D background and 3-D characters which give the game it's distinctive "Manga" feel. This is combined with the "Animatic Cinema System" which make-up an important part of the story along with 10,000 real-life impact sounds for punch and kick. There is no faulting the gameplay or graphics but it is the huge size of the download file that's the biggest download. You'll probably spend the best part of an afternoon just waiting for it to download but some things are worth waiting for.

A superb action game that will have Manga fans addicted from start to finish - a pity about the huge file size.

There are two main kinds of football games: the ones where you actually play the match against your competitor, moving the team players across the field, and the ones where you play as the manager of the team.

Football Manager obviously falls in the latter, as you can tell from its name, and offers gamers a comprehensive simulators that covers every single aspect of football management, from hiring players to game tactics, including training schedule, salaries and of course, dealing with team supporters.

In fact, the game is so complete that it feels just too overwhelming when you run it for the first time. Also, the fact that the tutorial is broken doesn't help either. But after playing it for a while, you can tell that this game is going to get you hooked on your computer for hours. Just one tip: use your own background music because the game doesn't have any.

The Bridge Construction Set will not only cater to wannabe architects but also to anybody curious about the physics of bridges. The game, set in a wireframe 3D environment, allows you to build briges of different sizes and materials. The trick is to make something that will hold, whilst not exceeding your budget. You'll have varying amounts of materials like wire, steel, or decks at hand, each with a specific function. The fun part of the game is that you can simulate your creations and open it up to vehicles to see if it holds.

We weren't really bothered by the weak graphics, as after all this a wireframe simulation. What was a cause for concern was the difficulty of the game. You'll soon see that it's difficult to build something resistant with a limited budget, also considering that there are external elements that you have to deal with, like the wind.

We also felt that the instructions in the game were a bit limited. Although going into Help gives you all details into material weight, strength and costs and all the key functions, more tips on which material to use where would have come in handy.

The Island is a single-player mod for Half-Life 2 set in a deserted island where zombies and other scary creatures have taken control of the situation. The story begins with you waking up with a terrible headache, a weapon and a lever. Will you be able to escape?

This mod uses the same graphic engine as Half-Life 2, taking advantage of many of its libraries to display monsters, sounds and weapons from the popular Valve game. The island terrain is also highly detailed and the enemy's stamina level has been raised to make the game more complex.

Dystopia is a cyberpunk themed total conversion of Half Life 2, created by an amature development team and released to the public for free.

Dystopia places the player into tense combat situations in a high tech world spanned by computer networks. As either Punk Mercenaries or Corporate Security Forces the player will fight through the physical world to gain access, via jack-in terminals, to cyberspace.

Cyberspace is a three dimensional representation of the world's network.
