Digital animation technology has improved so much that it’s now possible to animate your own talking heads from your home PC. CrazyTalk promises to give you all the tools you need to import images and photographs before quickly applying mouth, head and eye movement to create realistic looking avatars and fun animations.

At first users might be a little skeptical about the value of CrazyTalk, Give it a try though and you'll be pleasantly surprised by the power of the utility. Granted, most peoples' initial efforts with the program will likely be limited to taking pictures of friends and adding famous song or movie audio clips to them just for kicks. With enough tinkering you can customize everything in CrazyTalk, from the teeth in the character’s mouth to their facial movements and their range of movement. Best of all is the built-in timeline, which gives you complete control of the animation and sound, much as you would do in Flash, or a video-editing suite.

CrazyTalk offers alpha channel support, making it ideal for producing talking images to welcome visitors to your web site or in presentations. The simple-to-use export facilities also allow you to save to a range of formats as a media file, email attachment or a personalized greeting.

There are a few flaws with CrazyTalk that are a little frustrating though. The auto lip sync feature isn't all that impressive or accurate, for one, and there's no support for MP3 format audio. There also aren't all that many preset templates to work from, which might be bothersome to some users. In addition, on Mac there are too many updates and when new updates are applied, you lose any bonus content you may have added.

CrazyTalk requires some getting used to, but once you get the hang of it you'll be able to create unique facial animations.

Espionage is a very simple but powerful tool that allows you to encrypt files and then use them directly in Finder. It's designed to replace FileVault.

The advantage of Espionage is that it allows you to encrypt individual folders and interact with them directly in Finder with no need to encrypt your entire hard drive or create an encrypted partition just to protect its contents. Espionage also gives you far more control than FileVault by specifying which folders you want to encrypt instead of your entire Home folder. The big advantage of using Espionage over Disk Utility is that it merges the disk image and the mount point together into a 'folder', which means things like encrypting your email is possible and all-round data securing is more straightforward.

The exports are in iBook format but you can also export them as PDF files which any e-reader or tablet can read. Presumably however, any multimedia elements are excluded from PDF files so the result won't be as good as if you publish to the iBookstore. Alternatively, you can just export a pure Text version.

As you'd expect from an Apple application, iBooks Author is a very stylish and easy to use application. If you've ever used Keynote to make a presentation, then you'll feel very at home with iBooks Author.

TeamSpeak comes in two separate applications - one to be used as a server and the other as a client. You can therefore have your own private TeamSpeak server installed at home, which allows you to talk to your friends while playing with them in an absolutely private, secure environment. As the server administrator, you have the right to create and delete user accounts, set different privileges for each one of them, ban any given user or password protect the access to the server, just to mention a few.

As for the client application, it's very easy to use. Just enter the required connection data (server address, nickname and password if needed) and you're done. You can either enter the IP address of your own private server or use any of the hundreds of public TeamSpeak servers available on the Internet, which you can conveniently browse directly from your client. Both TeamSpeak server and client feature a simple, straightforward design that, in all honesty, could be improved a lot. The program's interface is just too basic: a bare window with no graphic elements at all and quite schematic menus that make you think something has been left out.

On the positive side, the program uses few system resources and the voice quality is excellent. Also, you'll find some interesting settings in the program's configuration menu, such as the option to adjust its bandwidth usage or the option to activate the microphone only when you speak, though this may be a little tricky to configure at first sight.

Needless to say, you can use TeamSpeak with any online game you play, as it's a totally independent application. So next time you meet your friends online to play, forget about messy written conversations right in the middle of a crucial battle and move on to TeamSpeak. You'll enjoy the game a lot more.

Once you've done this, use the virtual visit tool to get a 3D preview of what it looks like and talk a walk around.

The latest version adds a new level of realism to Sweet Home 3D. This includes a new ability to handle rounded walls, the possibility to store points of view, a new compass and even light and sun management to accurately show how your designs react under different conditions. They've also added a much needed auto recovery function if Sweet Home 3D crashes.

These are the basics and Sweet Home 3D is extremely easy to get to grips with. Unfortunately, the graphics are not great - many pieces of furniture look blocky, but its designed to give an idea of what an arrangement will look like rather than a perfect picture. You can take a photo of your finished design, which you can then send on to friends to view who won't need Sweet Home 3D to view it. The fact that it's based on Java shouldn't put you off either - it works very smoothly with virtually no delays in placing furniture or creating previews.

Sweet Home 3D is an excellent solution for all those that daydream about redesigning their home, or even for professionals that need a basic mock-up.

Plex can truly play or display just about anything from videos to slideshows and even weather forecasts. There is also a host of third-party plugins which can expand the functionality of Plex even further. Plex is an impressive application but it should be noted from the start that it is quite overwhelming. You'll have to spend quite a while just reading through the help guide to understand how to use it.

Plex adds many more features that were found in XBMC including the Plex Media Server, online video (including Hulu, TED, CNET, Revision3), full iTunes Music support, iTunes DRM Playback, iTunes Visualizers, and Sparkle Updates. Controlling Plex is a pain though. Due to its intended use on big screens, you can only control it via the keyboard or the Mac remote. You have to load in all of your music, videos and other media because it doesn't perform any kind of scan and it won't play all audio formats. On the plus side, Plex looks great - it looks like Front Row on steroids.

Plex is a great looking home theater app, with impressive video capabilities. It is let down somewhat by difficult setup and controls, as well as poor music library support.

Frontline Commando’s controls are also very polished. Aiming is controlled by moving fingers around the screen with designated fire, reload, and cover movement buttons. There is also a duck button that serves as the reload when near an ammo crate. Include the various purchasable weapons and Frontline Commando’s gameplay can change rapidly.

Various missions require players to eliminate all enemies, survive for a length of time, or even rescue innocent people in the war zone. The variety of missions keeps the experience fresh. Weapons are purchased with money earned through levels or in-game currency purchases. Some weapons and items can only be purchased with the in-game money.

Frontline Commando is a great example of an excellent game using touch controls to manipulate the character onscreen. The experience of Frontline Commando is amazing because the game plays very smoothly.

On the downside, the game requires too many in-app purchases. Even to reach higher levels, purchases are necessary which is annoying, even if the game itself is free.

Frontline Commando is overall a decent 3rd person shooter that gets quickly addictive.
