Black Mesa

Black Mesa is a fan made homage to the sci-fi horror game, Half-Life.

Story

If you haven't played any of the Half-Life games, this is the one to start with. The developers who worked on this project have crafted an extremely faithful homage to the first Half-Life game. Black Mesa takes you through the horrors of the events at Black Mesa leading to the Combine invasion of Earth.

All of the different elements within Black Mesa create an extremely immersive environment and story. The people and lab feel completely real and lived in. There are many little details in the environment that make you want to wander around to see all the little details.

All of the characters from Half-Life make their return and look better than ever. You really feel for them if you've been a fan of the series. Seeing them young and whole really taps into gamer nostalgia.

Graphics

The graphics of the original game have been completely scrapped. The textures and environments in Black Mesa are all new, giving the game a fresh feel and look. There are minute details scattered throughout the game that make the Half-Life world feel lived in. The graphics in Black Mesa are so detailed at times that you'll find yourself reading a sign or staring at all the switches on a computer console.

While the Source engine is quite old, the graphics in Black Mesa make put the whole franchise on the same graphical level. The original Half-Life looks aged but Black Mesa looks contemporary but won't impress folks who've been used to the stellar graphics found in modern games like Sleeping Dogs.

Gameplay

Gameplay for Black Mesa is exactly what you would expect if you've ever played a Valve game. Designed for a first person perspective, Black Mesa is a first person shooter. All of the controls are identical. Even the heads up display is very familiar, although a bit smaller and easier to read than the one in Half-Life 2.

Black Mesa includes some puzzles, which are simple but satisfying. You'll find yourself mostly navigating around unknown environments and shooting alien creatures to death. You start off with the iconic crowbar, but will be given guns and other weapons later in the game.

Gameplay is fun for the most part but is very linear. Black Mesa made sure that it didn't stray too far from the game that everyone loves and keeps all of the elements that made Half-Life great. Level designs have changed a little bit but overall, it is a faithful homage and still fun learning the story of Black Mesa.

Sound

The original soundtrack has been completely scrapped. Black Mesa features an all new, original score that you can download at Black Mesa's website. The soundtrack is ominous and works well to set the mood for different scenes.

Voice acting has also been updated but still utilizes the voices from the main characters in the original Half-Life. Other characters in the game have been re-voiced and given different lines. Each character will interact and speak with you so desire, making the world feel more realistic. The original voice acting in Half-Life was good but felt robotic at time, especially when combined with blocky graphics.

It's great to see, and hear, that the developers overhauled everything from the voice acting to the soundtrack.

Wrap-up

Black Mesa is an incredible re-make of a classic game. While it doesn't deviate too far from the original, where it does deviate makes it successful in refreshing a old game and making it relevant again for 2012. If you haven't played any Half-Life games, this is a must play.

Still, the game is not perfect, marred only by its extremely lengthy installation and long loading screens. Overall, Black Mesa is a must download. Its excellent story, soundtrack, and attention to detail make it one of the best gaming experiences out there.

Download Black Mesa in Softonic

Dream of the Blood Moon 1.1

Dream of the Bad Moon is a first person free horror game, inspired by the viral phenomenon <taglink type="program" country="en" id="3347921">Slender</taglink>. It adds to that concept with an original story and more puzzles to solve, making it a cut above most of the Slender clones out there.

While Dream of the Bad Moon lacks the lo-fi 'Blair Witch' feel of Slender, it makes up for this with an uneasy eeriness. The puzzles required to get each tear also make this a more complex experience. The monster chasing you is similar to Slender, although she seems easier to keep track of as you flee from her!

What Dream of the Blood Moon also does well is graphics. They may not match an AAA title, but they look good, and there are some lovely effects along the way.

It's not revolutionary, but Dream of the Blood Moon has clearly been made with care, and not simply churned out to latch onto the Slender phenomenon.

Download Dream of the Blood Moon 1.1 in Softonic

Slender: The Arrival 1.13 Preview

Slender: The Arrival is the sequel to the free to play horror smash hit <taglink type="program" country="en" id="3347921">Slender</taglink> which went viral in 2012. It is currently in beta and only available if you pre-order the game.

Note that unlike the original, Slender: The Arrival is not free, although the developer Parsec has priced it very reasonably with various payment options depending on how generous you feel. Until March 26th 2013, it is available as a beta download which you must pay for but which will entitle you to a free version of the full game when it is released.

Both Slender and Slender: The Arrival are based on the obscure myth that somewhere out there, there is a tall thin, faceless freak called "Slenderman" who not only abducts people (mainly children it seems), but mashes people's brains telepathically with his mind when he gets near.

It might sound like madness, but it's a myth that's become increasingly popular over the years with low budget horror films like The Blair Witch Project loosely based on it. Slender was one of the first games to be based on it and went on to become a phenomenon in 2012, inspiring several spin-offs and countless "Watch how scared I get playing Slender at midnight" YouTube videos.

As soon as you start Slender: The Arrival, its clear that its a more polished game than the original which is to be expected. Slender: The Arrival has a far more detailed environment than Slender although the basic gameplay remains disappointingly similar. There are more levels (Easy, Medium and Hard) in Slender: The Arrival but the basic aim is the same i.e. collect eight pages saying creepy, cryptic things like, "Don't look, it takes you", "He's out there" and "He's got massive limbs". The more you collect, the more the heartbeat music ramps up and the closer the sickening beast that is Slenderman is to suddenly appearing in his tuxedo and mashing your brain telepathically.

To control your character, the keyboard controls are:

W=Walk forward
S=Walk backwards
A=Walk left sideways
D=Walk right sideways
T=Turn Flashlight On/Off
SHIFT=Turn HUD display On/Off

Initial impressions are that it's hard to see what's radically new in Slender: The Arrival. I've already seen one walk-through where the player collected all eight pages and nothing happened. It seems that if there is a more complex plot as promised by the developers, it's not exactly clear what it is.

Slender: The Arrival is more polished than Slender with a richer world to explore but initial impressions are that it doesn't add much to the original.

Download Slender: The Arrival 1.13 Preview in Softonic

Dead Space 3

Dead Space 3 is an excellent game. It's varied, has a good cooperative mode, and its graphics and sound are great. Of the three games in the series, Dead Space 3 is arguably the most spectacular.

But in creating a fantastic and cinematic action game, the developers have lost Dead Space's defining elements: horror and surprise. Dead Space 3 is still great, but it may disappoint fans looking for a terrifying experience.

Dead Space 3 continues the story of Isaac Clarke, and delves a little deeper into his character, exposing more of his fears, motivations and personality. Isaac is much easier to empathize with throughout this game.

There are new monsters to fight, and varied locations, as the action moves from Earth to a frozen planed called Tau Volantis. As well as the action-horror, there are simple puzzles to solve, and even some mountain climbing. The controls are exceptional throughout, and it's never boring, even if it lacks the tension of the previous games.

Dead Space 3's story is excellent, and unlike Mass Effect 3, it has comes to a satisfying conclusion.

Haunt: The Real Slender Game (Haunt:TRSG) is a free horror game based on the popular <taglink type="program" country="en" id="3347921">Slender</taglink> game with new scenarios to scare the wits out of you once more.

Haunt looks and feels exactly like Slender but with the addition of a more engrossing plot and storyline. Rather than just collect weird cryptic notes like "He's watching you", Haunt requires you to collect notes which guide you to other locations where the rest can be found. It has a broader range of sound effects and scenarios (such as Green Park and a Power Station) than Slender making it more engrossing.

You also have to collect more objects to make your way through the game such as batteries for your camera. Although there's no sign of Slenderman, you have to avoid an orb like creature who like Slenderman, can pop out at any minute, mash up your brain and end the game. The sound effects and static indicate when he's close. It's easy to get lost in Haunt as the clues sometimes don't make much sense or say much, but it still retains the edgy atmosphere that made Slender such a success.

Haunt is a must try for anyone that loved Slender.

Download Haunt: The Real Slender Game in Softonic

Imscared - A Pixelated Nightmare

Imscared - A Pixelated Nightmare is a free indie horror game. Despite its retro graphics, this first-person horror delivers scares as well as being genuinely innovative. It's highly recommended for all horror fans.

I don't want to give too much away, but the game's introduction is great. It claims you need to make sure the RAR file was extracted properly or the game won't work. This probably means you'll have that folder window open as you begin, which is important, as that folder is somewhere you will come back to!

The first time you play Imscared - A Pixelated Nightmare, it seems like a pixelated <taglink type="program" country="en" id="3347921">Slender</taglink> game. You're somewhere in the dark, and you need to find things to escape, you assume. But the game ends abruptly, and that is where things get interesting.

From here on, it's clear that Imscared - A Pixelated Nightmare is playing with you, which is quite unusual. Developer Ivan Zanotti has found a way for his game to be much more than the now common series of jump-scares, and this makes it pack a much bigger punch than the many slender clones out there.

Imscared - A Pixelated Nightmare is an fascinating little horror game. Turn out the lights, put on your headphones and enjoy it.

Download Imscared - A Pixelated Nightmare in Softonic

Slenderman

If you liked the hugely popular <taglink type="program" country="en" id="3347921">Slender</taglink> and the Slenderman myth that it's based on, then you might like Slenderman which is a free game that was actually released before Slender.

Different scenario to Slender

Slenderman is slightly different to Slender, however, because rather than being in a forest, you are in a large building. In addition, the concept is slightly different. Slenderman still stalks you, but this time he's accompanied by Slender children (either his own or ones that he's abducted - it's not clear) who can also kill you. However, the main difference between Slenderman and Slender is that you can actually kill Slenderman - and the Slender kids - which is your ultimate aim.

Similar Gameplay to Slender

As you walk around the large building, you can collect a few objects including the all-important gun that you need to kill Slenderman. You can also pick up things like a radio which picks up the electromagnetic interference which tells you when you are close to Slenderman.

If Slenderman or one of his Slender children find you, you can shoot them but you need to keep shooting repeatedly to kill them which means hammering your keyboard like mad. If you don't hammer is quick enough, you die.

Lacks Fear Factor

Slenderman has very basic graphics (even compared to the Slender game) and doesn't quite have the fear factor of Slender. There's no creepy dark atmosphere and it's comparatively boring wandering around a building compared to a forest at night.

Conclusion

Slenderman may appeal to hardcore fans of Slender and the Slenderman myth but it doesn't match up the sequel.

Download Slenderman in Softonic

Slender's Woods is more about storytelling and requires you to solve puzzles rather than collect anything. Slender's Woods features two modes with different gameplay:

Story mode: This plays like a quest with the Slenderman chasing you. You have to visit various locations, pick up and use items and solve puzzles in order to escape.

Page collecting mode: This mode is for fans of the original Slender game. You have to collect a certain amount of pages in the woods to survive.

Slender's Woods is more engaging than Slender because it requires more problem solving and interaction with your environment. However, its not as easy to play as Slender and if your looking for a quick scare, then the original is better.

<striong>Slender's Woods in nevertheless a good Slender remake and will definitely appeal to fans of the original.

Download Slender's Woods 1.11 in Softonic

Erie

Erie is a horror game set in 1966. You have been asked to investigate an incident at a power generator. There was some kind of meltdown, and you have to find out what exactly caused it, and save any survivors.

Like <taglink type="program" country="en" id="3347921">Slender</taglink>, Erie gives you objects you have to find while exploring. However, Erie is a much bigger game, and is visually more advanced. While you're investigating you can use a spray can to mark places you've been. And you're not alone.

Erie has a raft of scares, and makes excellent use of sound effects. The first person gameplay is pretty simple; your tasks in the game are nothing new. But throughout the experience, the atmosphere is chilling, and the shocks keep coming. I found the movement was a little too fast to be convincing, but there's a great blur effect when you run, which gives the game a great sense of panic. And the chances are that you will be panicking when you run!

It might not have the big budget of <taglink type="program" country="en" id="314600">Dead Space</taglink>, or the creepy legend of Slender, but Erie is still a great looking and scary game, and highly recommended for horror fans

Download Erie in Softonic

Slenderman's Shadow: Claustrophobia 1.1

Slenderman's Shadow: Claustrophobia puts the <taglink type="program" country="en" id="3347921">Slender </taglink>legend in a tight spot - a garden labyrinth. You need to find the key to escape, but there are fakes hidden around the maze. Can you find the right key before Slenderman gets you?

Slenderman's Shadow: Claustrophobia continues the Shadow series, but doesn't do anything new, apart from the labyrinth setting. This environment is actually pretty bland, and worse still, it's not as claustrophobic as it promises. The stairway games like <taglink type="program" country="en" id="3338390">SCB 087</taglink> are much better at giving you claustrophobic chills, even without the sinister Slender hunting you down.

If you're a Slender addict, you'll enjoy Slenderman's Shadow: Claustrophobia. However, the series is really feeling tired, and needs some innovation and extra polish to make it worth your time.

Download Slenderman's Shadow: Claustrophobia 1.1 in Softonic

Slenderman's Shadow: 7th Street 1.1

Slenderman's Shadow: 7th Street is yet another <taglink type="program" country="en" id="3347921">Slender</taglink> clone, taking the basic idea of the viral original and stretching it over a variety of different deserted places. In 7th Street, you awaken on the street, and have to find objects before the Slenderman monsters gets to you.

Slenderman's Shadow: 7th Street has the sound effects, and the loneliness that we have come to expect from Slender related games, but it feels very tired. The street environment looks cheap, and doesn't add anything new to the series. There's a real 'seen it all before' feeling that comes with each new Slenderman's Shadow game now. If you've played one, you've played them all, and the effectiveness of Slender dimishes with each release.

Slenderman's Shadow: 7th Street is just more of the same. We want to see innovation, better production values and surprises in future releases.

Download Slenderman's Shadow: 7th Street 1.1 in Softonic
