If you've ever needed a reliable cross platform server, then you should look no further than the Apache HTTP Server which over the years has become on of the most popular open source servers on the net.

It was born out of the Apache HTTP Server Project in an effort to develop and maintain an open-source HTTP server for modern operating systems including UNIX and Windows NT. A survey by Netcraft found that more than 68% of the web sites on the Internet are using Apache which the developers claim make it more widely used than all other web servers combined so you know you're in good hands from the start.

However, be warned if you've never used or configured a server before as this is not loaded with wizards and quick start hints to get you going. Fortunately, there is extensive documentation however that takes you through the whole installation process step by step, plus there's an extensive Wiki.

When you run the installation file, you'll be prompted whether or not you want to run Apache for all users (installing Apache as a Service), or if you want it installed to run in a console window when you choose the Start Apache shortcut. You'll then be asked for your Server name, Domain name and an administrative email account. After this, Apache takes care of much of the configuration but you'll still need to know a little about where and how you want it to install files in various directories.

Apache Server is one of the most successful cross platform open source servers on the net - invest the time in learning how to configure it and you won't be disappointed.

Download Apache HTTP Server 2.4.4 in Softonic

Most importantly, it gives you full control over which files you want to unzip, which is useful if you need to install just one file out of a package instead of the entire package. The most common usage of Pacifist is to roll-back unsuccessful or problematic updates, especially to QuickTime.

Simply open the package you're having problems with in Pacifist and click on the Verify button. Pacifist then checks to see whether all files are installed correctly and have the right permissions.

Alternatively, Pacifist could be handy if an installer isn't functioning correctly and you need to extract only those files that are essential. It can even open certain archives via HTTP, which is handy in case you want to download only one file from a large .zip archive without downloading the whole file. As a final bonus, Pacifist can also find which installer installed which programs. This is ideal if you've got a program installed that you have no idea how it got there.

There's very little to criticize in Pacifist. It's a superbly versatile and powerful archive tool that may one day be standard in OS X.

Download Pacifist 3.0.10 in Softonic

F-Secure Anti-Virus for Mac

F-Secure for Mac is an antivirus solution for OS X. F-Secure has been around on Windows for many years but it's only recently that a Mac version has been launched.

Firstly, note that F-Secure for Mac will not work if you have any other third-party firewalls or antivirus products installed. It works with Leopard OS X 10.5 and above and both 32 and 64 bit Macs. The other important thing to note F-Secure isn't free - you have to purchase a license key which is around $20 a month.

Finally, if you want to uninstall F-Secure, you can't just drag it to the Trash - you have to shut it down completely and use the uninstaller that comes with the program. If that doesn't work, manually uninstall the program by opening a Terminal.app and issuing a command 'sudo /usr/local/f-secure/uninstall_Macprotection'.

F-Secure for Mac provides virus and spyware scanning in real-time although F-Secure recommend that you perform a manual scan every 1-2 weeks. One thing you may notice is that occasionally F-Secure for Mac detects false positives i.e. programs which are harmless to your system. If this happens, you can contact F-Secure directly at https://analysis.f-secure.com/portal/login.html to have it removed.

F-Secure Anti-Virus for Mac is automatically updated and displays the latest successful update check time on the Statistics page. F-Secure Anti-Virus for Mac displays a green status icon on the main page to display its protection status. If the indicator is either yellow or red, you will see a warning notification on the top line of the main user interface.

F-Secure for Mac is slightly different to F-Secure Internet Security on Windows. Some features are missing or different because of the specific needs of OS X. In addition, parental control features are already a feature of OS X and so are not needed in F-Secure for Mac like they are in Windows.

Overall, F-Secure is solid anti-virus software for Macs but it's debatable whether you actually need a permanent anti-virus solutions on Macs.

Download F-Secure Anti-Virus for Mac in Softonic

Folx for Mac 2.0.1030

We do a lot of downloading at Softonic, so obviously a decent download manager is essential. Folx for Mac is a free download manager and download accelerator that's suitable for all download needs from simple files to torrents.

Folx download manager for Mac can handle any file size and will download via HTTP, HTTPS and FTP. It supports auto-resuming and most importantly, offers high-speed downloads thanks to 'multi-threading', which seeks more than one source for a file. Perhaps what marks Folx out from the crowd is that it allows you to manage torrents, making it more than just your average downloader.

In this basic version, you can send torrents to Folx although if you upgrade to Pro, you can even search for torrents within Folx itself. Also in the Pro version, to prevent downloads slowing-down your connection, there´s also a handy 'Auto Speed' feature which allocates internet traffic more evenly. This is something sorely lacking from most downloaders and would have been interesting to try but unfortunately it's only available if you upgrade.

There are enough features in the basic version to keep you more than satisfied, however. You can schedule downloads for a specific time, resume them at any time and it even allows you to add tags to downloads for better organization. However, for all the claims about speed enhancements, I didn't notice Folx being significantly faster than my standard download manager. Also, without the bandwidth control feature in the Pro version either, it can tend to hog your bandwidth too. Overall, Folx does feel a bit bloated and overwhelming for a download manager and is probably aimed at 'power' downloaders who need maximum control and visibility over that they're downloading.

However, if you've found that your download manager is lacking in features or badly organized, Folx for Mac may well impress you.

Download Folx for Mac 2.0.1030 in Softonic

Charles Web Debugging Tool for Mac is a powerful HTTP proxy/HTTP monitor/Reverse Proxy tool that enables a developer to view all of the HTTP traffic between a computer and the Internet.

Charles for Mac allows developers to view requests, responses and HTTP headers which contain crucial cookie and caching information. It's very useful for enabling debugging the content of HTTPS sessions. It works by simulating modem speeds by effectively throttling bandwidth and introducing latency so that developers can experience an entire website as a modem user would.

For this reason, Charles for Mac is especially useful for Macromedia Flash developers as it makes it possible to view the contents of LoadVariables, LoadMovie, XML loads etc. Finally, Charles is useful for XML development in web browsers, such as AJAX (Asynchronous Javascript and XML) and XMLHTTP.

Charles Web Debugging Tool for Mac is a useful tool for any developer that needs to view HTTP proxies on their Mac.

Download Charles Web Debugging Tool for Mac 3.6.5 in Softonic

This means that the stability of Safari isn't compromised because it doesn't use any hacks and consequently, it also works with other browsers. The other big advantage of GlimmerBlocker is that it won't break either when you upgrade Safari.

GlimmerBlocker allows you to block images by right clicking on them and also allows you to specify which cookies are allowed from 3rd party sites. GlimmerBlocker even allows you to add modifications to pages by adding CSS rules and Javascript or by transforming the HTML before Safari receives it. In this respect, it's also an ad blocker for more advanced users, which is considerably more effective than most but does require some CSS and Javascript knowledge to get the most out of it.

GlimmerBlocker is an excellent ad blocking tool that's ideal for Safari users with some knowledge of how CSS and Javascript work.

Download GlimmerBlocker 1.4.14 in Softonic

One of the most useful features is that you can control how many threads are used to download a file enabling you to control how much bandwidth downloads take-up. Progressive Downloader also features a built-in mirror search which means it tries to find mirrors for large files.

Along with the multi-thread downloading features, you should experience super fast downloads as every thread can use its own server. In addition, Progressive Downloader also supports AppleScript and Automator which means you can automate specific actions and functions for use with a wide range of Mac apps. The websites supported by Progressive Downloader include Megaupload, Rapidshare and Filefactory.

The interface is very slick with mutli-colored LEDs to indicate the status of a download. To access and view thread details just CMD-click on a download and you can deactivate or change instantly.

Progressive Downloader tends to be a bit heavy on resources and may hog your CPU when you're downloading a lot of files. This encrypts your information, making it much more difficult for hackers or snoopers to detect what you are browsing.

Currently, HTTPS Everywhere works on Google Search, Wikipedia, Twitter, Facebook, most of Amazon, GMX, Wordpress.com blogs, The New York Times, The Washington Post, Paypal, EFF, Tor, and Ixquick. If you are technically oriented, however, you can write your own ruleset, so there's no need to be limited to the default sites. Additionally, you can enable or disable HTTPS Everywhere for individual sites under Tools > Add-ons > Options. However, if you don't have any technical knowledge, you may find this tricky.

HTTPS Everywhere is a simple but effective way to keep yourself secure when browsing the web.

Download HTTPS Everywhere 0.9.2 in Softonic

Kod 0.0.3

Kod is a sleek, text editor firmly aimed at programmers.

Visually, Kod is an attractive, easy-to-use piece of software. It’s not a hugely complicated piece of equipment, but it is very comfortable and full of potential. The app supports over 65 programming languages and syntaxes, while tabs and a sidebar make accessing your documents really easy. There's also a very fast search function.

While Kod could definitely add a few more features, it is fully integrated and supports syntax highlighting, editing over HTTP and HTTPS and a variety of fonts. It hasn’t got much more going for it, but it’s really well designed and worth checking out. Fingers crossed more features are added in future versions.

If you’re looking for a small but perfectly formed text editor for Mac, Kod is the app for you.

Download Kod 0.0.3 in Softonic

Web servers come in all shapes and sizes but the most important thing is that they perform reliably and are easy enough for any beginner to setup.

LiteSpeed Web Server is an Apache interchangeable server that's designed for those suffering from a major data bottleneck. It's fairly simple and straightforward to setup although at the same time, it's not short on features and it's highly flexible. LiteSpeed Web Server is compatible with HTTP/1.1, SSL, CGI, FastCGI, LSAPI, PHP, JSP, Servlets, GZIP compression, chroot, IP level throttling, connection accounting and DoS attack prevention.

Since you can launch it from Apache, it's an excellent option for anyone that uses Apache servers but has had problems with bottlenecks or traffic flow issues. The developers claim that LiteSpeed is more than 50% faster in PHP content delivery than Apache although this must surely depend on the amount and type of traffic that you are receiving.

Fairly simple to setup and with maximum Apache compatibility, LiteSpeed Web Server can help anyone who's been suffering from traffic problems on their server.

Download LiteSpeed Web Server 4.0.19 in Softonic

Pwitter 1.1.6

Pwitter is a simple and secure Twitter client built on Cocoa.

It's not exactly the most elegant Twitter client about but it does have some interesting features. To get started, sign up for a Twitter account and then just enter your Twitter username and password and the tweets you're following will be displayed in the main window.

You can easily contact other Twitter users directly by clicking on the small messaging icons (as long as the other user allows direct replies from you). All the general Twitter actions are covered, including download status updates, post statuses, post replies, send direct messages, etc. Pwitter is also a very secure Twitter client since it uses https to encrypt messages.

There are a lot of customization options, although it would have been nice to have been able to change the skin of the main interface. You can access Pwitter either from your Dock or Menubar and perhaps the only thing you can't configure is the alert sound for new tweets.

Pwitter is a secure and fast Twitter client although it's a shame the interface isn't better looking.

Download Pwitter 1.1.6 in Softonic

CrushFTP 5.5.0

If you're looking for a powerful FTP client that allows you to administer it from wherever you are, then CrushFTP could be your answer.

CrushFTP handles just about every protocol out there, including SFTP (SSH FTP), FTPS (FTP over SSL), HTTP, HTTPS, WebDAV, and WebDAV SSL, which makes it a highly secure client. CrushFTP derives its name from the way it compresses transfers on the fly, conveniently removing the need for a compression tool before transferring.

The best news for those seeking remote access, however, is that CrushFTP features an easy to use web client that allows anyone to upload files to your server wherever they are. This web client even supports drag and drop, transfer resuming after broken transfers and a web upload manager that details the progress of each action. When a user has uploaded a file, the administrator will be notified by email when it's complete, or you can opt to receive just one email detailing the user's uploads throughout the day.

CrushFTP is even expandable via plug-ins, such as a web stats plug-in, an auto-unzipper and a file filter for only allowing files with certain extensions to be uploaded. Despite all this functionality however, CrushFTP's interface leaves quite a bit to be desired. It looks like the developer has just taken the Windows version and translated it directly to OS X, which is never a good idea. The web interface is much better though, and it's a shame the developer didn't use more of that look on the client itself.

That said, CrushFTP is a very secure and powerful FTP client that will appeal to advanced users and those in need of web client functionality.

Download CrushFTP 5.5.0 in Softonic
