Mozilla Firefox for Mac 21.0

Mozilla Firefox is one of the World's most popular web browsers and was one of the first to break the stranglehold of Microsoft's <taglink type="program" country="en" id="69496">Internet Explorer (IE)</taglink> on the web browsing market.

With good reason too. Firefox remains an incredibly powerful and customizable browser although persistent memory leakage problems and competition from <taglink type="program" country="en" id="82988">Google Chrome</taglink> have dented its popularity.

There are a few interesting improvements in Firefox 21. There's a new Enhanced three-state UI for Do Not Track (DNT) to enhance privacy protection. Firefox should also start a bit quicker on your Mac as it suggests what can be done to improve start-up time (such as disabling certain unused add-ons). There's also a new Firefox Health Report feature which monitors how stable and well oiled your version of Firefox is. Other than this, there have been some minor cosmetic changes to functionality and some developer focused improvements.

The interface is pretty much the same as previous versions of Firefox, with a minimalist toolbar and there's still no way of removing elements that you may not want such as Java and .Net Framework. The major downside for most users however is that some plug-ins or add-ons won't work with the latest version of Firefox yet - so if you have a lot installed, prepare to be disappointed.

One major problem that persists is the high usage of RAM when Firefox is displaying Flash videos such as YouTube. Firefox runs an extra "Plugin-container" process for Flash videos that can occasionally consume 100% of your CPU and cause your Mac to freeze temporarily.

Something that's been introduced in more recent versions of Mozilla Firefox is Facebook integration. Firefox now supports Facebook's social API so you can have dedicated buttons for Facebook in your browser. Mozilla Firefox supports Facebook's Messenger within Firefox, giving users desktop notifications as well as a persistent friends list and activity feed on the right. Conversations will open up as overlays on top of whatever website you're on so you can multitask while you chat.

Mozilla Firefox 20 isn't a revolution in the development of Firefox, but there are some useful improvements that still make it a decent browser.

Download Mozilla Firefox for Mac 21.0 in Softonic

It'll ensure that your Mac isn't clogged with obsolete files and runs smoothly.

Mac Cleanse is a shareware program mainly focused on cleaning internet applications, like browsers. It provides a list of the applications you can clean, and clicking on a a name will open up a drop down menu of the elements you can check for deletion, such as cookies, downloads, or recent searches. The right side of the interface features an information panel with a description for the selected application, something which isn't really necessary.

We were a little confused by the way Mac Cleanse worked. The + and - buttons on the left won't let you add more applications to the cleanse list. Instead these let you create or remove custom selections of the applications in the list. The 'cleanse' button isn't very apparent either. You'll find it on the bottom right of the interface.

The good thing about Mac Cleanse though is that it lets you select and clean multiple applications quickly and safely, saving you lots of time.

Despite the slightly counterintuitive interface, Mac Cleanse is efficient at cleaning up multiple internet applications at once.

Download MacCleanse 3.3.1 in Softonic

DoNotTrackMe (formerly known as Do Not Track Plus) is a cross-browser extension that stops sites from tracking you. If you're concerned about targeted advertising or the amount of data sites gather about you, it's a very effective add-on.

Once installed, you'll be surprised at how much tracking you're subjected to and how much DoNotTrackMe blocks. DoNotTrackMe claims it can stop more than 600 trackers and it is compatible with Mac or PC for Chrome, Firefox, Safari, and Internet Explorer. It's constantly updated to keep ahead of the latest trackers. Benefits of DoNotTrackMe include more privacy, vastly increased control over what can track your activity and faster browsing speeds.

It's also very discreet. A small green icon appears in your browser toolbar with a number in it indicating the number of tracking cookies that the site you are currently browsing is trying to leave on your computer. If you click on the number, a drop down menu displays information about the tracking cookies which usually consist of anything from social media trackers to advertising trackers. If there's something in there that you don't want blocked, just click on it and DoNotTrackMe will immediately allow it to track you.

If you want more information on exactly what is tracking you, just click on the block counts and a drop down menu shows you the names of the companies (usually big ad networks such as Doubleclick, Omniture and Comscore). There is an additional information link "Who are these companies?" although it doesn't give any specific information - just a useful general description of why these companies are tracking you.

Finally, there's an "All Time Block Counter" which keeps track of the total number of trackers that are blocked which can easily run into the thousands in just one day.

If you're concerned about targeted advertising or how much websites seem to know about you, DoNotTrackMe is a powerful yet simple solution.

Download DoNotTrackMe for Firefox 2.2.5.1205 in Softonic

This fantasy game similar to Dungeons & Dragons sets you off on a number of adventures, where, more often than not, you'll have to use you logic and reasoning to solve puzzles. Although the graphics are pretty weak, and more adapted to Mac Classic than OS X, we found the game fairly enjoyable.

You can start off playing with any of more than a dozen demo characters. The tutorial allows you to quickly adjust to the game and understand what sorts of actions you can do like exchanging karma or doing spirit links. The game play feels a bit sluggish at first but you quickly get used to it. To chat with people all you have to do is walk up to them and start typing.

Clan Lord provides loads of playing time. Although nothing like World of Warcraft, it's that little nostalgia feeling that only classics offer.

Download Clan Lord 708 in Softonic

The internet is a goldmine of information about the World - but it can be overwhelming. World Explorer brings together geographical data in an easy-to-digest and organized interface that makes learning fun.

World Explorer makes uses of Google Maps and Street View to take you to over 350,000 locations pointing out and highlighting popular sightseeing spots along the way. There are geo-location tools to help you locate exactly where certain spots are if you ever want to physically visit them and a trip planner helps you plan real trips.

The navigation window in World Explorer is a bit small - it would be nice if you could increase the size of it. There also seems no way to enable 3D street viewing. However, I like the way that it uses Wikipedia to give additional info on each location and instantly allows you to calculate the distance between various hotspots.

World Explorer is a great learning tool for anyone interested in geography and sightseeing.

Download World Explorer 1.0 in Softonic

While you can still download Internet Explorer for Mac from this page, it is important to note that the product is no longer supported by Microsoft.

Microsoft ended support for Internet Explorer for Mac on December 31st, 2005, and does not provide further security or performance updates. Since the browser is no longer designed to handle the requirements of most modern web pages, we strongly advise you to try Firefox, Chrome, Safari or Opera instead. Alternatively, just check out all of the other browsers available for Mac.

However, if you really can't help yourself and are an Internet Explorer nostalgic, you might want to try it for a trip down memory lane. However, for normal internet browsing we'd really discourage you from using it. We couldn't even render the Softonic website in it and indeed, most websites failed to load properly. Internet Explorer for Mac is incredibly slow, buggy, prone to crashes and freezing and is woefully short of security settings.

Since development finished in 2005, Internet Explorer for Mac doesn't offer even the most basic features that you would consider a prerequisite on any browser nowadays like tabs, extensions, saved sessions or private data management.

There are absolutely no compelling reasons to use Internet Explorer for Mac. If you've just switched from Windows to Mac, try one of the browsers suggested above instead.

Download Internet Explorer 5.2.3 in Softonic

Please download the most <taglink type="program" country="en" id="107255">recent stable version of Firefox for Mac</taglink>.

Firefox exploded onto the web-browsing scene in 2004, it was downloaded an incredible 200 million times by 2006 according to its developers, Mozilla.

Since then, apart from some minor changes, visual teaks and security fixes, there weren't any radical changes – that is until Firefox 2.0 was released. It brought fans a whole host of integrated functions that were previously either unavailable or needed plug-ins.

Note that many of the existing themes and extensions will not work with this beta release although you can try forcing them with the “Nightly” extension – at your own risk of course.

Amongst the security highlights of 2.0 were anti-phishing support which helps the browser discriminate between genuine websites and those intended to store and retrieve your personal information. Other goodies include enhanced tabbed browsing (each with their own close option finally), the ability to un-close tabs, search plug-in/add-on manager, and much, much more. One of the most useful features we found was a predictive search function within the Google toolbar that would suggest potential phrases and popular search terms as you typed. The automatic session retrieval option (previously available with the Tab Mix Plus plugin) is also a tonic when your system crashes or you’ve got too many tabs open and Firefox cripples under the strain.

The extension incompatibility issue is the main drawback although this will change as developers update their plugins over the coming weeks and months. The legendary memory leak also still doesn’t seem to have been fixed as Firefox continues to guzzle processing power. This resulted in frequent crashes, keyboard head-banging and violent swearing.

Whilst the recently released Internet Explorer 7 is only just introducing tabbed browsing, Firefox is already taking internet surfing to a new level. Although many of the new features are available with plug-ins anyway, this is still a rip-roaring browser and consolidates Firefox’s position as the best browser on the market by miles.

Download Firefox 2.0.0.19 in Softonic
