In the previous version of iTunes, there was a persistent bar on the left where you can access playlists, albums, devices, and more.
VLC media player 2.0.6

If you want to play video or music files in just about any format, VLC media player is probably your answer.

Features

Version 2 ("Twoflower") brings a new interface, faster decoding, support for more formats and the ability to play HD and BluRay. It still remains however the most stable, flexible and lightweight audio and video player around today. While other media players will play unusual formats after downloading a codec, or simply refuse to play things,

VLC media player handles tons of formats, from MPEG to FLV and RMBV files. Version 2 has seen some important additions too such as support for 10 bit codes plus multi-threaded decoding for H.264, MPEG-4/Xvid and WebM.

Also useful is the fact that you can use VLC media player to preview files you are downloading since it plays incomplete parts of video files. VLC media player is not just for video playback however. It also offers superb integration with video channel streaming services such as Channels.com giving you access to channels such as ESPN, Reuters and National Geographic. Just right-click or CMD-click on the playlist, select Services Discovery and Channels.com.

Channels.com will then appear in your VLC media player playlist. Click on it to reveal the the different categories of channels available. Click on the category you want and a drop down list of all available channels appears in VLC media player. Just click on the channel you want to watch and streaming should begin almost immediately.

Usability

VLC media player also has great hotkey support and if you take the time to learn the shortcuts so it can be controlled without touching your mouse. If you're watching DVDs or video files through it, this is not an issue. For music, it plays more or less any file and features an equalizer and playlist creation. VLC media player isn't as intuitive as iTunes as a media manager, but it's a much more flexible player in terms of file formats. You can even use VLC to convert your files, and on top of all the formats and physical media it will play, many streaming protocols and TV capture cards are supported.

VLC media player makes it easy to add subtitles to your video files too - just add the SRT file to the folder where your video is kept, and it will automatically play with subtitles.

Finally, the interface in VLC media player has been somewhat improved in version 2 although it remains strictly functional. However, you can download skins to completely change VLC media player's appearance. The preferences menu is comprehensive without being overwhelming, and there is extensive documentation online.

Conclusion

VLC Media Player is quite simply the best multimedia application for Windows and Mac. It plays just about anything, hassle free - what more could you need?

What's new

Rework and fixes of the Mac OS X interface

Fix Pulseaudio initial synchronization

Fix MKV, SWF, AIFF and subtitles demuxer crashes

Translations updates and new Welsh translation

DVB-S delivery system detection

Fix audio and video track selection through libVLC

Fix system sleep issue on Mac OS X 10.5

Download VLC media player 2.0.6 in Softonic

Windows Media Player 11

With Windows Media Player (WMP) 11 Microsoft aims to counter iTunes’ dominance. The interface has been beefed-up, usability has been enhanced and Microsoft has worked at turning its flagship media application into a full multimedia center, linked to online stores and compatible with mobile devices.

Improved interface

The first thing that will strike you when you start up Windows Media Player 11, is the complete revamp of the interface. No more deep blue, the whole application is now dark and shiny and you can customize it by selecting a hue of your choice. Windows Media Player's left side is a drop down pane for your library, the center displays your lists and the right side is used to create playlists which you can rip, burn or sync with a mobile device.

Compared to Windows Media Player 10, we feel that Microsoft has actually made an effort to simplify the interface and give you more ways to browse through your media list, whether by using the drop down menu or the quick rollout line on the top left. The 'play' and 'previous' and 'next' buttons are now nested at the bottom of the interface and have a jazzy glow whenever you roll over them. Microsoft has finally succeeded in integrating a good search function into its Windows Media Player interface. As you type the name of an artist or title the application will bring up the results in the main window.

Windows Media Player 11 makes all your media more accessible. Double click the Media Library button to browse from your music to pictures, movie files and recorded TV. The thumbnail view is a great way to quickly scan through pictures and videos and to include the album image to audio tracks. By clicking the “Media information changes” option under the Library button you can also scan your PC to automatically find new media files. Creating a playlist is a case of drag and drop and oddly enough you can integrate audio, video and pictures. Burning and ripping in Windows Media Player is also very simple, yet disappointingly converting is limited to WMA, WAV or MP3.

Easy to use

The sync process is promising yet remains a bit unstable. While it’s very easy to create a list and sync media, Windows Media Player can occasionally crash or fail to load your mobile device, even if you press the refresh button. When we tested it with a Pocket PC, we had to restart Windows Media Player 11 so that it would recognize it and let us sync our music. As soon as the device became accessible though, it also became visible on the left sided menu, making it very easy to browse through it for music or pictures.

A big improvement

Windows Media Player 11 is a huge improvement from version 10. The whole interface is snazzier and makes browsing through your media simpler. Microsoft has also made creating playlists, syncing, burning or ripping just a case of drag-and-drop. Windows Media Player lets you check out music on dozens of online stores and is loaded with small features to customize your interface and change how you interact with your media.

Conclusion

While the syncing process still remains a bit unstable and we lament the lack of podcast feed support, Windows Media Player 11 is a solid competitor to Apple’s iTunes.

Download Windows Media Player 11 in Softonic

With 123 iPod/iPad/iPhone Backup, you can transfer files with ease, along with being able to do a couple other useful things.

On top of being able to backup or transfer music, video files and e-books from an iPod, iPad or iPhone to your computer, 123 iPod/iPad/iPhone Backup also lets you convert video and audio files for your Apple device.

123 iPod/iPad/iPhone Backup boasts a nice interface, arrayed in different shades of blue. Simply mouseover a button to read more about its functions. Settings are a bit sparse, but of the ones available you can opt to let 123 iPod/iPad/iPhone Backup detect if iTunes is running before the program launches. You can also select a specific directory for output.

During tests, 123 iPod/iPad/iPhone Backup had a tendency to freeze up or crash if buttons on the interface are clicked too rapidly in succession. 123 iPod/iPad/iPhone Backup's English grammar for interface button descriptions and in the settings panel is also not the greatest, unfortunately.

The trial version of 123 iPod/iPad/iPhone Backup allows for up to 20 file transfers and 50% conversion on video and audio files.

123 iPod/iPad/iPhone Backup is a great solution for transferring or backing up files from your Apple device to your computer, if you can handle the semi-frequent crashes.

Download 123 iPod/iPad/iPhone Backup 3.1.5 in Softonic

EF Duplicate MP3 Finder is a useful tool that lets you locate duplicate audio files on your PC.

If your music library is a total mess left over from the days of pre-iTunes online downloads, it's probably difficult to tell just what exactly is in your collection, let alone whether you have more than one of the same song file.

Your files might not be properly labeled or even start with the CD track number. These are all things that make sorting through your library to find duplicate files a bit of a pain.

EF Duplicate MP3 Finder searches for duplicate audio files, looking for those with the same or similar properties. It does this by analyzing the ID tags the audio files contains, specifically pertaining to the artist and title information. EF Duplicate MP3 Finder then compares that information to other audio file tags.

EF Duplicate MP3 Finder uses audio file names in the event that tag information is not available. EF Duplicate MP3 Finder allows you to adjust your search options to search for files with similar names instead of identical properties as well, which is useful if you think you have files where the artist or song title are spelled incorrectly. MP3 Ogg/Vorbis, WMA, and FLAC audio formats are all supported. Unfortunately, EF Duplicate MP3 Finder is missing support for several others like MPEG-4 and AAC.

EF Duplicate MP3 Finder is a competent little tool to help you quickly and effectively organize your audio file library.

Download EF Duplicate MP3 Finder 5.20 in Softonic

Xilisoft iPod Magic allows you to transfer DVDs, music and video to your iPod or iPhone, without the need for iTunes.

Billed as a three-in-one device management app, Xilisoft iPod Magic lets you rip audio and video from your iPod to your PC, copy files from iPod to iTunes, and transfer files from your PC to your iPod. The software even lets you convert non-iPod file formats on the fly, before transferring them to your device.

Thanks to a clear, well-designed interface, Xilisoft iPod Magic makes it easy to manage files on your iPod or iPhone. The contents of your Apple device are displayed in the main window (sectioned into audio, video, podcasts and photo). There are three large buttons underneath to add files to your iPod from your PC, export files from your device to the PC and for exporting to iTunes. Alternatively, you can simply drag and drop multimedia to and from Xilisoft iPod Magic. The app even supports batch transfers.

Ripping a DVD to your iPod/iPhone is very easy with Xilisoft iPod Magic. Just load the disk, hit the icon and the movie will be transferred to your device, or to iTunes, in the correct iPod format. In fact, any (well, almost any) video or audio that you transfer using Xilisoft iPod Magic will automatically be converted to the correct format. And quickly, at that. The program comes with a a neat preview window so you can see the video as it's transferring.

On the negative side, some users might find Xilisoft iPod Magic to be a bit sluggish and unresponsive at times. It often takes a very long time to build your audio library into the window. The iTunes integration is far from perfect and a number of times Xilisoft iPod Magic managed to crash iTunes as it was trying to export music into it.

Putting these glitches aside, Xilisoft iPod Magic makes for a useful way to move music and video between your iPod and your PC.

Download Xilisoft iPod Magic 4.2.4.0729 in Softonic

SuperSync allows you to make sure that you're never far away from your music wherever you go.
SuperSync is a powerful tool for synchronizing music libraries between multiple computers.

The generally well designed interface is a little intimidating at first but divided logically with a list of tracks from all your available libraries appearing at the bottom.

The top part is divided into sections for filters, genre, artist and album. SuperSync helps you to import your music from iTunes or from a hard drive and you can easily search for other local music servers.

Although the interface is well structured it would have been nice to have been able to resize the different sections as the top part feels a bit bunched-up in the program window.

SuperSync features a music player to listen to tracks although it is pretty limited as it only really lets you play, stop, or change tracks. You can also create a back-up library on a separate computer or hard disk from any music source including your iPod.

Download SuperSync 4.0.8 in Softonic

ArcSoft MediaImpression is an all-in-one media hub for your PC.

The goal with this application seems to be a replacement for various other programs you might use for one specific media type. Why use programs like iTunes, Picasa, and Windows Media Player when you only have to use ArcSoft MediaImpression which does all three? It certainly makes sense from the outset.

Once ArcSoft MediaImpression is installed, you are faced with buttons for music, pictures, video and all media. Clicking any of these opens a traditional pane with a folder tree on the left. In the picture segment you can perform basic edits, such as cutting, removing red eye and face-tagging. In the music and video segments you can listen to and watch any of your files, and reorganize them. You can also hit the easy archive button, which will save any selected files or folders to a CD.

If you want to print your pictures, you can order a variety of different products from ArcSoft MediaImpression, including mugs and books.

While it's potentially a good idea to have a single media application, the execution of ArcSoft MediaImpression is a bit weak. The photo editing options are not sufficient or comparable to competing programs like Adobe Photoshop Elements. ArcSoft MediaImpression's video player is similarly basic.

ArcSoft MediaImpression is a nice idea and a step in the right direction for an all-in-one media hub. Unfortunately, it still lacks some of the features and flexibility of most media players or photo editors.

Download ArcSoft MediaImpression 3.5.255.985 in Softonic

Chapter Master 1.1.3

Chapter Master is designed for audiobook enthusiasts, or those wanting to create enhanced podcasts. Its function is to add chapter stops (with or without optional images) to an AAC (*.

m4a or *. m4b) file for use as an audiobook or enhanced podcast on the iPod. I hope I have designed it to be extremely easy to use. You simply open an AAC file and can add and remove chapter stops at any time point within the audio, naming them and optionally associating an image with each.

You can, if you choose, listen to the audio, or fast forward through it, and by clicking a button insert a chapter at the current play time. Or you can simply choose to add regular chapter stops at say 15 minute intervals throughout the file.

You then just save the file and it is ready for import into iTunes and transfer to your iPod. Once on the iPod you can navigate between bookmarks using forward and back controls.

On later model iPods you'll also see a list of the named chapters when you first go into the book/podcast. One important feature (compared to some alternative tools) is that you can load, edit and save an AAC file any number of times.

If you have previously put images and bookmarks into the file, you'll see those on reload, and can edit or remove them at will. Note that the program doesn't currently work under 64 bit editions of Windows.

Download Chapter Master 1.1.3 in Softonic

A versatile audio player for Windows, Aktiv Player will let you both listen and organize your audio files into a true music collection.

Built around an embedded SQL database engine, users can customize Aktiv Player's interface, although many of the options have a bit of an outdated appearance. Icons on the left of the interface are available to help make navigation easier.

Aktiv Player has a "Dynamic playlists" feature that essentially is a hybrid between iTunes' shuffle feature and Pandora's song choice personalization based on your evolving music preferences. The more music you listen to, the more Aktiv Player will be able to customize the shuffled songs to your liking.

Apart from that, the player is a bit bare bones with stand-out features. It has all the basic music player controls, but doesn't really go above and beyond.

If you're looking for a new audio player to test out, Aktiv Player is a good, but basic, choice.

Download Aktiv Player 9.2.0 in Softonic

They look good, are pretty unobtrusive, and generally useful, whether it's notifying you about the track you're listening to on iTunes, or that a download is complete.

Now we have Growl for Windows, still in beta, and it certainly feels like it. The notifications are less attractive, it insists on placing an icon in your system tray (it is invisible in OSX), and it's compatible with only a few applications for which you need to install separate plugins.

Windows isn't an Apple product, and while there have been several attempts to bring Apple style OSX features to Windows, they always feel out of place. Growl needs a lot more work to be something valuable for the Windows user. The Firefox notifications pop up for downloads, but as your task bar will also be flashing, it seems a bit pointless.

Hopefully Growl will improve with future versions, but it's awkward and not very useful at the moment.

Download Growl for Windows 2.0.8.1 in Softonic
