Plex, (based on the cross-platform XBMC), is a free and open source (GPL) home theater entertainment hub and media-player, designed to cater for all your viewing needs.

Plex can truly play or display just about anything from videos to slideshows and even weather forecasts. There is also a host of third-party plugins which can expand the functionality of Plex even further. Plex is an impressive application but it should be noted from the start that it is quite overwhelming. You'll have to spend quite a while just reading through the help guide to understand how to use it.

Plex adds many more features that were found in XBMC including the Plex Media Server, online video (including Hulu, TED, CNET, Revision3), full iTunes Music support, iTunes DRM Playback, iTunes Visualizers, and Sparkle Updates. Controlling Plex is a pain though. Due to its intended use on big screens, you can only control it via the keyboard or the Mac remote. You have to load in all of your music, videos and other media because it doesn't perform any kind of scan and it won't play all audio formats. On the plus side, Plex looks great - it looks like Front Row on steroids.

Plex is a great looking home theater app, with impressive video capabilities. It is let down somewhat by difficult setup and controls, as well as poor music library support.

Download Plex 0.9.5.4 in Softonic

Soundflower 1.6.2.1

Have you ever wanted to enable an application to access your soundcard or interact with another application via the soundcard? Soundflower is a free audio system extension that allows applications to pass audio to other applications.

Soundflower emulates the interface of an audio device but allows any audio application to send and receive audio with no other support needed. It opens as one of two audio devices (2ch/16ch). For most people and needs, the 2-channel device is sufficient.

If you want an application to interact with another application via the soundcard, select Soundflower as the output device in the first application and Soundflower as the input device within the second application. If an application does not allow you to specify audio devices, you can make Soundflower the default input or output device inside the Sound panel in the System Preferences, or with the Audio MIDI Setup utility application which is the only slightly tricky part.

You may hear interference at first when you setup an audio channel and if so, the developers recommend increasing the buffer size of both applications (set within each application). Note that if more than one application is sending its output to the same channel, the audio will be mixed.

The practical usages of Soundflower include conducting interviews with both voices. So instead of recording an interview with Skype and only hearing one voice, Soundflower allows you to record both voices for a more professional production. Alternatively, it's useful for routing audio from applications such as iTunes and Spotify to other applications and devices.

Note that this download is for OS X 10.5.8+. You can also download the OS X 10.4 compatible version (Version 1.4.3)..

Soundflower is a remarkably effective and free audio routing solution..

Download Soundflower 1.6.2.1 in Softonic

Playback is an easy-to-use tool that allows you to share media on your Mac with any Playstation 3, Xbox 360 or other UPnP compatible device.

Playback integrates with major media applications such as iTunes, iPhoto, Aperture, Adobe Lightroom, Photobooth, EyeTV, and more, meaning all you have to do is select what you want to share. Playback also allows you to control the amount of data being transferred to your devices via a handy bandwidth throttle that ensures you can surf and transfer data at the same time comfortably.

Playback also prides itself on being particularly fast due to the nginx server. Nginx delivers high performance transfer rates, stability and simple configuration which is why its favored by sites such as WordPress, Hulu and SourceForge. Finally, another bonus is that Playback supports HD MKV files so no transcoding is required. However, some Matroska formats are not supported meaning that you have to sit through painfully long transcoding processes before playing certain media.

Overall, Playback is an excellent streaming app for Macs to PS3s and Xbox 360s. Combined with an application such as XBMC, it offers a superb home entertainment setup system.

Download Playback 1.8.10 in Softonic

MyTunesRSS allows you to do exactly this by accessing your iTunes folder over a local network or the internet.

Initial setup involves setting up a server using the IP address of the computer that contains your music. Once connected, the user interface is like a stripped down version of iTunes showing you your tracks and categories such as the 25 most played, best rated and most recently added. You can browse your whole library by album, artist or genre plus you can access your playlists or create new ones.

To play tracks, you can either download them or play them directly in MyTunesRSS. If they will play in Flash format, you can play them directly in the MyTunesRSS player but anything that won't play in Flash will require a plugin. Alternatively, you can download an entire playlist in M3U or XSPF format and play them in any application that can play them such as iTunes or VLC Player. If you're a Last.fm user, it can even continue to scrobble your tracks as they play.

There's even a theme creator to give your own touch to the apps interface but this requires knowledge of how to use the remote API which isn't particularly easy if you're a beginner to dealing with XPI. The main downside of MyTunesRSS is the fact that it's written in Java and as a result, it can run rather sluggishly. Note that in addition, this trial is limited for a period of 30 days.

MyTunesRSS is a simple but powerful program that can help you access your tunes over a network or wherever you are in the world as long as you have a decent internet connection.

Download MyTunesRSS 4.1.3 in Softonic

The good thing is that no setup or importing is required with Disco XT so you can get up and running as soon as it's installed. It's packed with features to help your mixes sound as professional as possible no matter what your ability.

Examples include the Pitch-lock. This allows you to adjust the playback speed of song on Disco XT without changing the musical pitch which makes it much easier to match two songs with different pace. If this still doesn't help, another useful Disco XT feature is Automix which plays and fades songs together without any effort on your part. This works with, excuse the pun, rather mixed results but it does an acceptable job, and best of all, allows you to get on with enjoying the party, all thanks to Disco XT.

There are many other features of Disco XT such as Automatic BPM detection, Waveform analysis and even a voice recording function that make it a very solid DJing setup.

Download Disco XT 6.4.6 in Softonic

If you've ever wanted to connect to your Mac or home network remotely, then Slink could be for you.

Slink allows you to connect to your home network with the minimum of fuss and access Finder, iTunes, iPhoto, and other applications just as if you were at home using it. To get going with it, you must first install the Slink Preference Pane on a computer on your home network. Then you have to install Slink on the computers that you want to access your home network with.

What makes Slink such a pleasure to use is the fact that it's so easy to setup, even a newcomer to Macs and networking will be able to use it. Slink requires no NAT, dynamic or static DNS, IP addresses or port knowledge. Once you've installed the Slink Preference Pane you're done.
Slink takes you step-by-step through the setup process to make it easy to share services such as iTunes, iPhoto, files and printers to other computers on your home network wherever you are. Almost any service that uses Bonjour can be accessed via Slink from anywhere although this means that there will inevitably be applications that you can't access with Slink.

Security is always an issue with applications like these although Slink supports the use of FoxyProxy in Firefox meaning you can access your home network anonymously and securely.

There are a few minor drawbacks however. Slink only works on Intel Macs and you'll need to ensure that all computers connected to it are running on OS X 10.5 or above.

Slink is a superb network sharing tool that's ideal for iPad users or those Mac users on the go that need regular use of their home network.

Download Slink 1.9.7 in Softonic

Radiologik DJ is a sophisticated DJing application aimed mainly at professional radio DJs.

Radiologik DJ consists of three main players and one library player. All of them have customizable individual audio outputs and detailed time calculations. They also all integrate with iTunes, and a special scheduler for automating transmissions although this has to be downloaded separately.

The two program players consist of an independent voiceover player and a library player. The players operate in the same way as they would in a radio station environment by overlapping at your command. You can configure custom start and stop fades for each track played and you can search directly in iTunes from the Radiologik DJ interface. The integration with iTunes is superb with tracks imported instantly, searches lightening quick and support for dragging and dropping tracks into Radiologik DJ.

For professionals, Radiologik DJ has a lot to offer. The automatic track playing time calculations and the scheduler are two particularly useful features. However, for beginners, Radiologik DJ isn't particularly user friendly - it takes a lot of getting used to and despite the iTunes integration, isn't ideal for those just starting out.

For professional radio DJs, Radiologik DJ is a complete and highly accomplished solution.

Download Radiologik DJ 2011 6.1 in Softonic

There's nothing more bland than piles and piles of blank CDs or DVDs.

Most people can't be bothered to create personalized covers for them because they don't know where to start. However, innovations such as Lightscribe and applications such as Disc Cover have made it almost as easy to create a cover as it is to burn a disc so there's really no excuse.

Disc Cover is an easy to use and intelligent tool for creating CD/DVD labels, cover art and more. You can be as creative or as lazy as you want thanks to a huge number of templates and designs within Disc Cover. Best of all, it integrates with several other Apple applications such as iTunes, iPhoto, Finder and iDVD to import images and data into your covers saving you tons of time.

When you start Disc Cover, you are confronted with the setup wizard which allows you choose a template (based on music genre mainly) and then some track names from iTunes (or a film title from iDVD) that you want to import. After this, the graphics editor opens giving you a huge amount of control over how the disc cover looks.

In fact, Disc Cover is a design enthusiast's dream allowing you to tweak the color palette, change the fonts and reposition text accurately. The great thing about moving text around is that it automatically fits itself to the shape of the CD or DVD so you don't need to fiddle about.

If you've got lots of DVDs and CDs just waiting for covers, Disc Cover is the perfect applications to give them some life.

Download Disc Cover 3.0.6 in Softonic

It does this by using iSight to detect any movements and as a result, it's not an exact science and the results can be rather erratic.

On initial setup, it seems pretty impressive. "Wow", I thought, "I'm actually controlling iTunes with my hands." You're asked to do a quick calibration test which means waving your hands like a lunatic until the play button lights up to tell you that calibration is complete. Then you're up and running but it soon becomes infuriating trying to control the scrolling of albums. FluidTunes seems to have a mind of its own, going in any direction it chooses - left soon turns into right, right into left etc. It also just suddenly starts playing files at random while trying to target the one you want.

It's a shame because FluidTunes is an original tool which brings Minority Report style technology to the Mac. Unfortunately, it needs a lot more work before it's the finished product, but it could be worth the wait.

Download FluidTunes 1.0.2 in Softonic

It allows you to write entries under dated headers as a page in a diary does and then allows you to browse them chronologically. If you want to keep more than one diary that's no problem either - viJournal allows you to have several running at once. Alternatively, you can use what the program calls "Sessions" which means you can setup categories for each day and enter details within those categories within a specific day.

Along the bottom of the clean interface you have four buttons - one that pops out a notepad for random thoughts, one for dragging in images, a Drop Box for attaching multimedia and other files and a Library button to navigate through your entries. You can even drag iTunes marker tracks into viJournal so that you can click on the marker when you read back through viJournal and it will play the track you were listening to when you wrote it. In the Drop Box, you can record video from your iSight camera to add some more life to your entries or just take a photo.

There's much more to viJournal including integration with Blogger and LiveJournal, security locking and syncing with mobile devices that make viJournal a superb option for the personal diarist.

Download viJournal 2.3.8 in Softonic

With so many multimedia devices in the home nowadays, its useful to be able to interlink them all and access them wherever you are.

TwonkyMedia Server is the Mac version of TwonkyMedia Manager for Windows and aims to help you do this. TwonkyMedia Server allows you to share your media on compatible devices throughout your home. So for example, if you want to send a photo slideshow to your digital photo frame, you can do so in a click. Or, maybe you want to watch videos on YouTube on your TV - no problem, TwonkyMedia Server can send it to your device.
The idea is that no matter what you want to access, where it's stored or where you are in your home, TwonkyMedia Server will allow you to view it.

TwonkyMedia Server is a purely web-based application so as soon as it is installed, it will automatically open a tab in your browser. It's very impressive how it instantly catalogs everything on your Mac, allowing you to view and access files as if you were using them on your hard drive.

Setting it up is also a pleasure. You can simply click on "First Steps" down the left hand side menu and you're taken through the process including an option to select an "iPod" style navigational structure. Note one drawback however - you can't play DRM protected music - such as that purchased via iTunes - on TwonkyMedia Server.

TwonkyMedia Server is a simple but powerful way to share your multimedia devices across your home without a complicated setup process.

Download TwonkyMedia Server 6.0.28 in Softonic

Doorstop X 2.3

Firewalls are not something that Mac users usually have to concern themselves with but as Macs grow in popularity, this will change somewhat.

Adding a Firewall adds an extra layer of protection to your machine, which should prevent anything malicious from affecting your Mac. Doorstop X has been designed specifically with Leopard in mind and features an easy-to-use interface that even those new to firewalls shouldn't find problematic. Unless you're a system admin expert though, you will need to consult the instructions on more than one occasion.

Fortunately, the interface of Doorstop X makes this extremely easy with an 'Ebook' button on every Window pane that takes you to the appropriate part of the instruction manual. Each element that's protected by Doorstop X is listed clearly down the left-hand window pane. This can include anything from iTunes and iPhoto music sharing to iChat and Remote Login services. To edit any of the settings, simply select the service and click 'Edit'.

If the service you want to protect isn't on there, you can create it by clicking 'New' and Doorstop X reveals the elements and features that you can protect. You can easily toggle Doorstop on and off by clicking the 'Start' and 'Stop' button at the top. Note that some people have complained that it stopped applications like Skype working although I experienced no such problems and maybe this illustrates how important it is to understand how to configure ports properly. Probably the best advice is to follow the setup wizard if you're unsure rather than try and configure Doorstop X manually.

Doorstop X is a fast, highly configurable, and easy-to-understand firewall. You'll still need to spend some time understanding how to configure ports and understand firewall jargon but Doorstop X makes this as easily accessible as possible.

Download Doorstop X 2.3 in Softonic

If you're looking for a simple remote control for iTunes, then look no further than your iPod Touch, iPhone or Windows Mobile Pocket PC when used in conjunction with Signal.

Signal allows you to control playback, browse or search your media library, and edit playlists from anywhere in your home as long as you have your mobile device. The controls are more than adequate too covering all the essentials such as play and pause your music, shift between songs in the playlist, adjust the volume and even rating songs and setting album art.

While Signal is easy to setup and use, the problem is that since it was first released, Apple have made their own free Remote app for iTunes meaning that many won't see why they should purchase an app like Signal to do essentially the same job. However, the ability to manage album art and change ratings may be enough to appeal to some.

Signal doesn't offer any major advantages over Apple's Remote but may have a few album art and ratings capabilities that appeal to some.

Download Signal 1.3 in Softonic
