The PeaZip interface is fresh and easy-to-use with a few built-in themes to spice things up.

Right-clicking on a file or folder and choosing Add to archive or Browse path with PeaZip will also provide direct access to the program's factions. The compression/decompression process is very quick and smooth, and there are impressive advanced options for users who want to get a little more technical.

Among the best of these advanced PeaZip features are the encryption/password options, compression variables, and the File tools, which allow you to split files, join them and even view the checksum files. PeaZip really impressed us - it's a top-class program that performs at a really high level, and is a worthy rival to apps such as WinZip or 7Zip.

If you have a child who likes watching shows on Nickelodeon, then Nick for Windows 8 is a good app to download for them to watch short clips and view pictures of their favorite Nick characters. Beyond that, Nick for Windows 8 doesn't do much.

There is a 'Games' section in Nick for Windows 8 but all it does is aggregate a bunch of links to Flash games on Nickelodeon's website. Clicking on a game will pop you out of the app and into a browser, which is a pretty jarring experience.

There are plenty of video clips but they are very short, usually less than a minute. There are no full episodes of Nickelodeon cartoons, making Nick for Windows 8 a very limited experience. Parents will still have to rely on streaming video apps and services like Netflix to get full episodes.

In the end, Nick for Windows 8 doesn't really do much. The app is more of a hub to take you into a browser to do what you actually want. While it may entice kids initially, the lack of content and features will have them bored quickly.

One of the biggest problems that Windows 8 faces is its steep learning curve. Start Menu Modifier helps make this learning curve a bit more manageable by overlaying the tile interface on top the desktop. What Start Menu Modifier does is shrinks the tile interface to show up on the top of the bottom of the screen, making it wider and scrollable.

While Start Menu Modifier looks seamless and works well, it doesn't offer any advantage of the stock interface. The app doesn't give you a traditional start menu, like the Pokki app, so many users will be disappointed at that. Jumping in and out of the tiled interface is something that definitely takes some getting used to but offers a better, more useful view of all your apps and live tiles.

Start Menu Modifier has some bugs that need to be worked out as well. The application itself doesn't require any installation, which is good and bad. You'll have to find the folder it's located in to get into its options. During launch, there is a .NET Framework error, which can be ignored but makes the app feel incomplete. Start Menu Modifier also didn't keep our settings after shutdown or reboot, which is a major bummer.

Still, those who want a less jarring Windows 8 experience will want to give Start Menu Modifier a try.

Fried Cookie has once again released a dead simple application for basic tasks but File Extractor is a tough recommendation as it is just too simple. While it does support a myriad of formats, the only thing that File Extractor does is uncompress file archives.

File Extractor's interface features a simple drag and drop affair. There are no options to adjust other than where to save the file. Disappointingly, you cannot create a new folder within the application to save to. Users will have to create a new folder in Windows Explorer before choosing it within File Extractor.

It is difficult to recommend File Extractor over free alternatives like 7-Zip, which supports more formats, compresses/uncompresses files, and is integrated into the Windows shell so that right-clicking on files gives you a 7-Zip option to add or extract an archive.

Overall, File Extractor is too simple, slow, and doesn't feature important features that other free competitors offer.

There is a version of FlipToast for Windows 7 and XP, but FlipToast for Metro is the first Twitter client for the touch-friendly Windows 8, which features an animated live tile. You can add a Twitter and Facebook account to the application but there is no support for multiple accounts yet.

FlipToast is targeted at the casual Twitter and Facebook user, as many powerful features are not there yet. That said, you can view comments, reply, and retweet messages from both Facebook and Twitter. You get a column for updates, news feed, photos, birthdays, inbox and "apps." It doesn't seem that FlipToast supports a column for direct messages or favorited Tweets yet.

Although FlipToast can claim the title as first Windows 8 Twitter client, there is still much work to be done. The biggest gripe I have with FlipToast is that there's no in-app browser so clicking links and even profiles will take you out of the application into Internet Explorer. It's a jarring experience and should really be integrated into the app. There are also interface quirks and inconsistencies like the fact that you can't interact with updates in the Updates column while you can in the News Feed. The games and apps in FlipToast are also nothing more than bookmarks that open up pages in Internet Explorer.

Overall, FlipToast is a good first version Twitter and Facebook client but needs a lot of polish before the official launch of Windows 8.

Bible-Discovery features bookmark handling, customizable font size and color,s a biblical text importing pane, and a parallel and comparative Bible read feature. The translations - of which there are over 50 - aren't included in the download but you can download them from the developer website including an extra 10 dictionaries.
