gedit provides a simple interface from which you have access to a full text editor with programming functions and is compatible with most languages. gedit incorporates text search and replace, spell checking, printing and support for opening almost any file.

The range of languages supported by Gnome include C, C++, Java, HTML, XML, Python and Perl. You can Undo and Redo actions, edit files remotely and all the other standard functions you'd expect from an editor including go to a specific line, text wrapping and backing-up of files.

Nevertheless, gedit may seem a bit basic for some programming needs but this problem has been offset somewhat by the introduction of plugins which add advanced functions to the editor.

Whether you're familiar with geddit from Linux or just want a simple but powerful editor, geddit is a solid choice.

Crystal Space renders with OpenGL software (meaning it works with most 3D graphics cards too) and features curved surfaces, volumetric fog, dynamic colored lighting, terrain engine, LOD, procedural textures, portals, etc. Crystal Space has a graphical interface which is not actually a WYSIWYG editor but rather a collection of libraries with which you can create a 3D game.

It allows you to add special effects such as dynamic lighting, reflective surfaces, volumetric fog, particle effects and many more. If you're new to 3D modeling however, you might find Crystal Space very complicated. The installer alone requires knowledge of how to use the terminal and entering "% ./configure, % make and % sudo make install". Bible-Discovery is a Java based application and this download includes both the Windows EXE file and the JAR Java file to open it on Macs. However, despite this it works very quickly - there's no sluggishness - and it opens instantly.

Bible-Discovery features bookmark handling, customizable font size and color,s a biblical text importing pane, and a parallel and comparative Bible read feature. The translations - of which there are over 50 - aren't included in the download but you can download them from the developer website including an extra 10 dictionaries.

Bible-Discovery is generally easy to use - Menus are clearly laid out and there are tons of options although it is a bit buggy when switching back to the desktop as it tends to leave remnants of the Java menus on your screen. Also, it's a bit annoying having to download all the separate translations although since most users will probably only need one or two, this shouldn't be a major problem.

Screengrab! can capture a selected region, the visible portion of the website as seen through your browser's window or, what is more interesting, the whole webpage from top to bottom -that is, even the areas that fall beyond the browser's limits. This is probably the fastest and most convenient way to capture a complete website without having to copy different areas and then paste and manually arrange them on an image editor.

The only thing I missed in Screengrab! was the possibility to save images in more than the two formats available (JPG and PNG). Also, I found quite uncomfortable the fact that the program doesn't save the file with the appropriate extension -you have to type it yourself.

The program mainly aims to cater for C/C++, Java, Pascal, Clipper, Cobol, SQL and Fortran programmers although it could prove useful with other languages too, such is it's range. However, if you program in only one language, you'll want something more specifically tailored to it than Zeus Publishing Text.
