UC Browser 8.9.0.251

UC Browser is designed to make mobile Web access quicker and more convenient. It's a pretty lightweight application that manages to cram in a number of interesting features without slowing down your browsing experience too much.

Features

UC Browser has a number of interesting tools that you don't normally see in a mobile Web browser, such as an integrated download manager, built-in Clipboard for simple copy and paste, and a start page with a number of preset links to a range of categorized web sites. Of course, there's full support for bookmarks too.

There's a simple, yet effective Search tool within UC Browser that facilitates quick searching through Google, Bing or Yahoo!, allowing you to choose which search engine the browser uses.

UC Browser is a proxy-based browser, which re-renders and compresses page data on a server before sending it to the client (in much the same as Opera Mini and Skyfire do). This makes it exceptionally quick at loading pages. Unfortunately, it seems that image rendering is sacrificed somewhat in this process, and often you'll find that images won't display properly, which can get annoying.

Quality

If you find the web browser on your phone to be a little clunky then give UC Browser a try. Viewing WAP and web sites in UC Browser is a painless experience thanks to its multiple windows, which allow you to have several pages loaded at once in much the same way as tabs in Firefox.

You can flick between the pages simply by tapping the Switch button, and open, close and bookmark pages using keypad shortcuts. UC Browser gives you a lot of control over page layout, too. You can choose to view pages in full screen, tweak the font size, zoom images, and tweak image quality.

Conclusion

Overall though, UC Browser makes for a quick and easy way to explore the riches of the Web from your phone.

What's new

Quick Reads - the best RSS reader.
Cloud Synchronization - by synchronizing your bookmarks through cloud synchronization, they will always be there, wherever you are, whenever you want.

Installation

This app is designed to work with Java-enabled mobile devices, though Softonic cannot guarantee it will function correctly on all devices.

Download UC Browser 8.9.0.251 in Softonic

The official Yahoo! Messenger app for mobile phones allows you to exchange instant messages with your Yahoo! or <taglink type="program" country="en" id="118150">Facebook </taglink>contacts.

Once you've requested the download link and installed Yahoo! Messenger on your mobile you can start using the app to chat with your buddies by signing in with your account details. The application automatically imports all of your contacts, and groups them by whether they are online or offline.

To start chatting with the Yahoo! Messenger app, just tap on a contact, press 'r' or '7' to start typing your message. You can call up a history of your conversations by clicking on the 'Load previous' button. Besides sending instant messages, you can send a file to your contact from your phone, or even send them an SMS.

Yahoo! Messenger contains lots of options and settings, though you have to fight through menu screens to find them all, since most are contextual (meaning they only appear from certain parts of the app). Once you start using the Yahoo! Messenger app and learn the shortcut keys you'll find things much easier.

Among the options within Yahoo! Messenger are the ability to add contacts, update your status, change the way contacts are sorted and search contacts. You can import all your Facebook contacts into the Yahoo! Messenger app by signing in with your Facebook account details.

Although it's navigation isn't as slick as the iOS or Android versions, Yahoo! Messenger for Java phones still makes for a more fun alternative to SMS.

Download Yahoo!

IQ Light is a flashlight app for Java phones that helps you see where you're going in the dark.

The principle of IQ Light is based around a plain screen that changes color from white to yellow, through a series of gradually changing tones. The flashlight is kept on because of this constant flashing, meaning that the light doesn't dim on your phone.

Though it serves its purpose well, IQ Light is very limited. The only option the application gives you is to start and stop the light. There are no options for changing the color of the lights, or adjusting the frequency of the flashing.

If you'd like a flashlight app with more features than IQ Light, then try <taglink type="program" country="en" id="69144">Light Utilities</taglink>, which gives you three different types of light: strobe, party and night-light, each of which can be customized.

Note, that when you load IQ Light, you must visit the sponsor's web site before you can start using the app. You only have to do this once, though.

If you want a simple way to see in the dark, IQ Light will show you the way. Opera Mini Next allows you to preview the upcoming changes in the browser before they are added into the main apps.

The biggest change for Opera Mini Next on Java is a new start page when you start the app and it is capable of learning your common sites and content.
JaxtrSMS 2.00.5 Beta

JaxtrSMS is an app for Java mobiles that lets you send free SMS messages to your friends.

What does JaxtrSMS do?

Instead of using the SMS messaging feature on your phone, JaxtrSMS lets you use your data or WiFi connection to send the message, in much the same way as you can with messaging apps like <taglink type="program" country="en" id="332961">WhatsApp Messenger and Viber.

The main difference between JaxtrSMS and these other chat apps is that doesn't require the person you're sending the message to to have the application installed as well. So, you're able to send a message directly to their SMS inbox.

You can use JaxtrSMS to send free SMS to any phone in the USA or India, but if you're outside of these countries you'll need to buy credits with JaxtrSMS to send messages. These rates could be cheaper than they are on your mobile plan, but make sure you check before you part with your money. There's no charge to send messages to another phone with JaxtrSMS on it.

How does the app work?

JaxtrSMS is pretty easy to set up and start using. The first time you load the app you need to enter your name and telephone number then check your SMS inbox and click on the link in the mail from JaxtrSMS to activate the application. You're now free to start composing messages, adding the recipients number, or looking them up from your phone contacts.

Although JaxtrSMS performs its function reliably, it's not a very pretty app, and neither does it have too many features. The user interface isn't attractive and there's no support for sending multimedia messages or even adding emoticons to your texts. It does have options for sharing about the app on Facebook or Twitter, though.

JaxtrSMS lets you send free SMS to any phone in the USA and India, but if you live outside of these countries we'd recommend you stick with WhatsApp or Viber, since they're nicer to use and have more features.

Download JaxtrSMS 2.00.5 Beta in Softonic

Got cheap, flat-rate Internet access on your phone? Then make sure you install an instant messaging client such as eBuddy Mobile Messenger on your device.

eBuddy Mobile Messenger pulls all your IM accounts into one, allowing you to view everyone who is online and chat to them, no matter which service they're using. eBuddy Mobile Messenger currently supports: MSN, Yahoo!, AIM, Google Talk, ICQ, and Facebook.

After installing the app on your phone, you'll be prompted to sign up for a free eBuddy account. After you've completed the short registration process you're ready to start importing your contacts from your various IM and social networks, which you do just by signing into them all from within eBuddy Mobile Messenger.

Start chatting

When you're all set up, you'll see a list of all your online and offline contacts in the main window of eBuddy Mobile Messenger. Starting a conversation is merely a case of clicking 'Chat' to launch a new chat tab. eBuddy has a number of neat chat options, including the ability to send a picture directly from your phone's camera, insert quicktext from a list of (editable) common phrases, view profile, and add emoticons. On the latter point, the preset emoticons within eBuddy Mobile Messenger are pretty basic. You can download new ones from eBuddy, but not that many.

eBuddy Mobile Messenger comes with a tidy, colorful user interface which is a pleasure to use. The use of tabs helps to keep the screen clutter-free and makes everything clearly visible.

eBuddy Mobile Messenger is great at what it does, but it's a shame it doesn't go quite as far as the likes of <taglink type="program" country="en" id="70377">Nimbuzz</taglink> or <taglink type="program" country="en" id="65366">fring</taglink>, which both offer VoIP as well as text chat.

Micro Counter Strike is a mobile version of the classic 3D first person shooter, Counter Strike.

Playing as either a terrorist or counter-terrorist, the aim of Micro Counter Strike is to take out your rivals using the many varied rifles, pistols and knives available in the game. You can choose to play against bots, or take on human opponents via Bluetooth, which is great fun.

The great thing about Micro Counter Strike is the sheer number of weapons, equipment and maps you can choose from, making it a mobile combat game that you'll be coming back to time and time again.

The look and feel of Micro Counter Strike is very similar to the original. The first-person 3D graphics look great and animation is slick (assuming your Java phone has a high enough spec to handle it). Unfortunately though, there is no sound in the game, which is one of Micro Counter Strike's few weak points.

If you enjoy playing first-person shooters then Micro Counter Strike is well worth installing on your phone.

Download Micro Counter Strike 1.4.0 in Softonic

Spruce Invaders 1.01

Spruce Invaders is a clone of the popular 70s arcade game, Space Invaders.

As with the original, the object of Spruce Invaders is to blast away all the aliens off the screen before they reach the bottom of the screen. You use the directional buttons to move left and right and fire upwards using the '5' key. Be careful, because the aliens are gradually edging closer towards Earth.

Spruce Invaders is one of the most basic Space Invaders clones you'll play. The black and white graphics are very blocky and there isn't much visual variation among the enemies. The animation is also pretty bad (although let's not forget the original Space Invaders was pretty poor looking).

Playing Spruce Invaders is simple, addictive fun and it's the kind of game you can pick up and play without really thinking too much. That said, shooting all the baddies is still pretty difficult.

Spruce Invaders is worth installing if you're a fan of retro arcade games.

With Blueshoot you can send instant messages on your phone for free, using your Bluetooth connection.

Blueshoot is ideal for exchanging text messages with someone in the same room as you because you don't need to pay for internet or SMS messaging costs. The application works with all Java-enabled mobile phones that have Bluetooth installed.

Using Blueshoot is a fairly straightforward process. You start by scanning for Bluetooth-enabled phones and laptops then you can 'shoot' a message to any of these devices. You can set up a default message or edit your own before you send it.

Blueshoot comes with a Spy Mode, which you can leave on and it will detect new Bluetooth devices as they come into range. There's also an Auto Shoot mode, where you messages are automatically sent to devices when they are in range.

Messaging can Blueshoot is a little cumbersome at times. For a start, pairing requests need to be sent and accepted, which involves the exchange of codes. Also, it's impossible to hand-pick the recipients of your messages if you want to send the same message simultaneously. Blueshoot only lets you send a message to one person from the list of available devices, or all of them.

But if you want a way to send short text messages for free on your phone, Blueshoot offers a reliable solution.

Download Blueshoot 1.0 in Softonic

eBuddy Mobile Messenger 1.5 for Nokia

Got cheap, flat-rate Internet access on your phone? Then make sure you install an instant messaging client such as eBuddy Mobile Messenger on your device.

If you already use instant messaging or chat services on your PC then you can use the same accounts on your phone. Probably the best way to do it is to install a multi-network chat client, such as eBuddy Mobile Messenger. The program pulls all your IM accounts into one, allowing you to view everyone who is online and chat to them, no matter which service they're using. eBuddy Mobile Messenger currently supports: MSN, Yahoo!, AIM, Google Talk, ICQ, and Facebook.

Even to have Skype text chat would've been a nice addition.

If all you want to do is send instant messages though, eBuddy Mobile Messenger makes it quick and easy to chat across different IM networks.

Download eBuddy Mobile Messenger 1.5 for Nokia in Softonic

I remember the days when a World atlas would be the size of your desk. Nowadays though you can fit an entire World map in your pocket.

WorldMap is a Java-based interactive political map of Earth, based on the one in the CIA's World Factbook. Once you've installed the app you'll be presented with what looks like a title page with information about the map. At first it's unclear where you go from here, until you realize you can zoom out from the Menu screen, and that this key is actually a tiny part of the top right-hand corner of the map.

As well as being able to zoom in and out, you can move around WorldMap using the directional buttons or the 2, 4, 6 and 8 keys on your phone. There's also a feature for setting a marker, which lets you draw a line from one point to another, although it's unclear what the real benefits of this is.

WorldMap displays all the countries along with their capitals and major cities. It also displays oceans and lakes, as well as lines of longitude and latitude. I appreciate that this is a political map but it feels pretty sparse in terms of information. For instance there is no topographic view, the major rivers aren't shown, and it's very sparse in terms of the cities it displays.

Nevertheless, if you need a pocket-sized guide to the political boundaries of the Earth, WorldMap represents a clear and easy-to-navigate solution.

Download WorldMap in Softonic

Guitar Trainer 1.1.8

Learning the guitar can be a painful experience - both physically and mentally. Thankfully, with Guitar Trainer installed on your phone you should find the learning process a little easier.

Guitar Trainer is a Java-based mobile game designed to help improve your knowledge of the fretboard and train your ear at the same time. There are two different game modes to choose from. The first, Training mode, displays a random note on the fretboard which you need to identify by hitting the keypad button that corresponds with the note. Guitar Trainer will show you if you're right by highlighting the correct note in green. There is no time limit in Training mode, but your hits and misses are recorded and kept for statistical analysis.

The game mode in Guitar Trainer adds levels of increasing difficulty, giving you a specific target to reach within a set time. Your goal is to reach the highest possible level by completing all the targets on time.

Guitar Trainer is not just a visual aid to help you with the fretboard, it also helps to give you a musical ear too. Each note you see is also played back to you, and you can repeat the note as many times as you like using the 0 key, to help you tune.

There is a vast array of options within Guitar Trainer, including the ability to set the number of frets, change volume level, focus on a particular string, and select a tuning standard.

On the downside, the presentation of Guitar Trainer isn't that great, with fairly basic graphics and sounds. Also, the 'gameplay' is rather limited as there's no way of actually taking your knowledge and using it to make compositions or join notes together in the program.

If you're a newcomer to the instrument though, Guitar Trainer makes for a handy way of practicing your knowledge while you're sat on the bus.

Download Guitar Trainer 1.1.8 in Softonic

Zombie Mansion 1.0.2

If you're bored and fancy giving yourself the willies to liven things up a bit then install Zombie Mansion on your phone.

This Java-based game charges you with the tricky task of escaping from a huge monster-infested house. In order to do this you need to collect all of the crystals on each level, and pass through the trapdoor to the level above. As well as dodging zombies, you also need to beware of other obstacles such as spikes and acid pools.

It has to be said that Zombie Mansion is terrific fun, and has all the charm and character of those classic 80s ladder-climbing adventure games like Pitfall, Donkey Kong, and Jumpman. The graphics are tiny and the game characters are low on pixels, but it doesn't affect the gameplay, which is highly addictive.

The controls in Zombie Mansion are very straightforward - you use the directional pad or the 2, 4, 6 and 8 keys to move your man, and press the center button, or 5 key, to jump. Succeeding in the game is another story though, and Zombie Mansion is a very tough challenge that requires both skill and logic, so it will test all your gaming powers.

It might not be as scary as Resident Evil, but Zombie Mansion is great retro-style fun.

Download Zombie Mansion 1.0.2 in Softonic

GCal 0.3.5

If you're a Google Calendar user then you'll know just how effective the application can be for organizing your life. But what happens if you want to use the program while you're out and about? One option is to install GCal on your Java-enabled phone.

GCal is designed to provide a simple way of checking and editing your Google Calendar while you're on the go. Provided you have already set up a Google Calendar account the program will automatically log you into your agenda when you provide your username and password.

Once logged in, GCal will display the entries for the current day. Simply click on an event to open up details of that entry, such as the time, place (which you can quickly view in Google Maps), description and guests. From here you can perform a number of actions, such as duplicating, saving it locally, adding comments, or even sending it via SMS.

To flick between different dates in GCal you just use the left and right directional buttons on your phone. This is good for checking upcoming events, but because there is no monthly calendar view, checking appointments in the distant future is rather cumbersome.

Despite being tricky to navigate, GCal is a pretty powerful tool and comes with a whole host of features, including calendar filtering, event creation, and alternative softkeys.

If you can learn to live with the rather clunky interface you should find GCal to be a very useful tool for keeping you on time at all times.

Download GCal 0.3.5 in Softonic
