Any painter who has used a virtual drawing app can be forgiven for not really enjoying the experience - they're just not realistic. Flowpaint is one of those editors, but even though it's a good start, it still needs quite a lot of development.

Flowpaint doesn't require installation, only the Java Runtime Environment. It features a very simple interface with no configuration options at all, just the ability to save, clear picture and undo. The right-side panel includes all the drawing tools, though surprisingly Flowpaint has no color palette – you simply have different types of brushes, each one of them with a different color.

Flowpaint's tools are divided into Sketching, Painting and Effects. The bottom half of the panel allows you to make tweaks to these effects, but you'll just have to experiment, as it's not at all clear what each option does. Despite these limitations, Flowpaint is an attractive painting app, perfect to start experimenting with realistic digital tools, but there's just no way it's as advanced as other programs like ArtWeaver or TwistedBrush.

iWisdom is a simple desktop application that allows you to build and manage a list of quotations or other brief insights. These can be categorized and sorted and also automatically scroll from one quote to the next on your desktop. You can also publish a collection of your favorite quotes and wisdom in HTML.

It has to be said that iWisdom isn't exactly the slickest looking application. It looks very dated although navigation is straightforward and it's easy to use. It doesn't help that it's based on Java (you'll need Java Runtime Environment (JRE) of 1.5 or higher to use it) but since it's not a bloated app, it works pretty quickly.

iWisdom isn't a masterpiece but it is simple and effective at what it does.

VLC Player is the most popular open source media player for a reason - it's excellent! It isn't the most attractive program though, and the online community has been hard at work creating lots of skins that improve, or at least change its appearance.

VLC Skin Editor lets you join in, but be warned, it's not an easy process. As well as being creative, you'll need patience! To get going you need to install both the editor and also the Java Runtime Environment. It's far from intuitive so check out the 'extras' above for an online tutorial - it's very necessary!

Before you create your skin you have to make PNG images for it with an external image editor (eg: GIMP), as VLC Skin Editor only allows you to add the various player attributes to the skins, not create the graphics. The step by step tutorial is pretty clear, but to get to a working skin will take quite a lot of work.

It's good to see an attempt at opening up skin design to a broader audience, but this is still far from a user friendly experience.

JPassGen is a simple password generator to protect your accounts, applications and files that may be vulnerable to unauthorized access.

It generates keys of any length, and you can specify what kind of characters to include i.e. letters, numbers and symbols. You can also set it to remember your passwords so that you don't have to keep entering it to access your files. The author of JPassGen recommends you use at least 10 key characters, including letters, numbers and symbols, although you have to be careful. Uppercase & Lowercase letters, numerals & special characters can be used in combination to generate strong passwords whilst user specified characters or symbols can also be used. Note that you'll need Java's Runtime Environment for it to run properly which is a bit annoying because it's rather heavier on resources than it needs to be.

A useful tool for anyone that uses passwords over multiple applications and is worried about security.
