Quran Reader 5.00

Studying the Quran is an essential part of Muslim life but what about those times when you can't get near a mosque or are on the road?

Step forward Quran Reader, a mobile application that lets you read the sacred texts while you're on the move using your PDA or phone. You'll need the Java Runtime Environment installed on your device, but aside from ensuring this is present, the setup-up process is a pretty straightforward one.

Once installed, there are all manner of features at your disposal to help you improve your knowledge of the Quran. For instance, you can set and retrieve bookmarks, highlight verses with a subtle green colour, and there's three levels of zoom available in case you're eyesight isn't up to scratch.

Quran Reader includes all 114 Suren of the Holy Scriptures in Arabic, English, Urdu and Farsi. You don't even need Arabic, Urdu or Farsi support on your handheld to read it, as it works straight out-of-the-box. Unfortunately this free version doesn't support other languages like French or German.

If you travel around a lot and wish you had more time to study the Scriptures then Quran Reader is ideal.

Download Quran Reader 5.00 in Softonic

Rubix Redux 2.00

If you were around in the 80s then you're sure to remember one of the greatest inventions of that era - the Rubix cube.

Personally, I never managed to solve one of those oh-so frustrating colored bricks, so I thought I'd have another stab at completing it by trying out this 2D version of the puzzle on my mobile phone.

Rubix Redux plays in a similar way to the original only this time you only need to rotate the blocks on horizontal and vertical axes, so that every row or column is the same color. Unfortunately, this makes it no-less difficult, and I ended up wasting hours trying fiddling around with it. Needless to say, I came pretty close to throwing my phone at the wall on several occasions.

The game itself is neatly presented without being too flashy. There is a choice of four difficulty levels, each with a different number of squares that increase with difficulty. You can save and load games, and Rubix Redux keeps a record of all your stats and high scores. It's fun to play, though the repetitive nature of trying to match the colors up can become awfully infuriating, especially as there are no in-game hints.

If you want to revisit the days when colored cubes were more popular than video games then Rubix Redux makes for an interesting incarnation.

Download Rubix Redux 2.00 in Softonic

Asteroids 1.00

Asteroids was one of the most popular of all the old Atari classics and many a youth was misspent blasting rocks in an arcade. Personally I couldn't see the attraction of the game, and the stupid control system used to annoy me.

This clone of the game for Java-enabled phones is pretty faithful to the original. You take command of a ship (well, a white triangle, actually) and must blast rocks (blue pentagrams) to smithereens using your laser gun (red dot) without coming into contact with them.

As well as accurately mimicking the blocky graphics of the classic, it plays the same too. You need to thrust and turn using the keys on your phone, which proves to be a pretty intuitive control method. It's not very fast to start off with, so the game is easy to pick up even if you haven't played it before. What's more, the instructions can be called up whenever you want through the Pause menu.

Unfortunately there wasn't enough in this version of the game to excite me because it's basically just a copy of the original. Perhaps with a little innovation in terms of gameplay I would've finally gotten hooked on Asteroids.

I know a lot of people love the original and if you're one of them then this is probably an essential download for your phone.

Download Asteroids 1.00 in Softonic

Java Sapper 1.0

I'm thinking of suing Microsoft for including Minesweeper in Windows 95, because it's probably the main reason I didn't score as highly as I'd hoped in my college exams, such was the addictive nature of the game. After installing Java Sapper on my mobile phone I'm now faced with the problem of missing my bus stop every time I travel to work because the game faithfully recreates Minesweeper so you can play it anywhere you like.

Your goal is obviously to detect all the mines hidden on the game board without actually hitting one. As with the original, you do this by clicking on the little squares to reveal the position of the mines using the numbers under each one. Clear the board quickly enough and you'll get lots of juicy points.

Disappointly, Java Sapper adds little to the original Minesweeper, and graphically it's still very boring. There are a few options, such as restarting a game, modifying the difficulty level, and choosing between stlyus or keyboard control.

Thankfully though, the game retains the same addition level of it's Windows-based grandfather meaning that I'll have a lot of explaining to do when I turn up late for work tomorrow.

Download Java Sapper 1.0 in Softonic
