If you like to keep an eye on exactly what's using resources on your Mac, then System Lens is a simple and effective solution.

Makes it easy to manage apps in OS X

System Lens does a similar job to Task Manager in Windows or Activities Monitor in OS X, i.e. it makes it easy to manage which programs are running on your system at any one time. If your Mac is running slow, then a tool like System Lens can quickly fix the problem.

Quit and monitor resource usage

Probably the most useful feature of System Lens is the ability to instantly quit applications that are causing problems. This works similar to the "Force Quit" option in activity monitor. If you use this option, remember to Save your work first unless the app is completely frozen.

Also, rather than show what percentage of your CPU an app is using, System Lens indicates whether an application is using a low, medium or high percentage of your Mac's resources. This is great for those that want a simple overview of resource usage although power users will miss the ability to see exactly how much certain apps are hogging your system.

Very simple to use

System Lens sits in your Menu Bar. When you need to see why your Mac is running slowly or what is hogging resources, just click on it and it will display a drop-down list of the applications open and how much of your CPU they are using. By clicking on the cog in the top right corner, you can filter exactly which apps you want System Lens to track.

Simple and effective resource tool

System Lens is an easy way to make sure your Mac runs smoothly and prevent applications from slowing it down.

Download System Lens 2.0 in Softonic

Aperture 3.4.4

If you ask about a photo editor for Mac, most people will recommend iPhoto. But if you're looking for something else, you should probably skip to Aperture.

Aperture could be defined as 'iPhoto on steroids'. It's a complete photo organizer and viewer, easy enough for the amateur, but with the powerful tools that any advanced user would need. Plus it features a comfortable interface that hardly takes a few minutes to get used to.

Aperture lets you import images from various resources (including your photo camera), organize them in an intuitive way and optimize or fix them if necessary. When ready, sit back and enjoy them in a fullscreen slideshow, or use them in various creative projects such as a book, an album or a web gallery.

When I said Aperture was a bit like iPhoto, I wasn't exaggerating. This new version includes Faces, the popular facial recognition technology implemented in the last version of iPhoto. But Aperture goes a step beyond and also includes Places, another special technology that geolocates your images using the information stored in metadata by some cameras. However, I have to say that this feature wasn't working properly: the map took ages to load and controls were over-sensitive – which made map navigation a real pain. It even caused a program crash while testing it.

Besides these organizational features, Aperture includes a bunch of interesting tools to enhance your pics. You can tweak the image's balance, exposure, color and light values, levels and more with easy-to-use slides. The so-called Adjustment presets let you apply quick, frequent fixes to images in just two clicks. Finally, the all-new precision brushes help you fix the problem with extraordinary accuracy.

Other features in Aperture I found specially interesting were the possibility to share your images online in MobileMe, Facebook and Flickr right from the program, and to create printed copies of your photos – which always works as a nice present for grandma.

Aperture is an excellent photo application, there's no doubt about that. But in a way I felt disappointed when testing this new version. I expected to have more editing and drawing tools, and – why not – support for layers and masks. I found the controls uncomfortable and hard to manage, and my overall impression was one of disappointment.

Aperture is a powerful photo organizer and viewer that includes a handful of features to view, fix, optimize, enhance, share and enjoy your photos!

Download Aperture 3.4.4 in Softonic

McAfee VirusScan 9.2

When I was a Windows user, of all the big anti-virus apps out there, the one that I got along with most was McAfee. It just seemed to do it's job with less fuss and intrusion than Norton or any of the other big ones.

McAffee VirusScan is even more stripped down and does a straightforward job. However, be warned that to uninstall it, you have to use the uninstaller that is bundled with the download or that can be downloaded <taglink type="program" country="en" id="86051">from Softonic</taglink>. If you simply drag and drop it to the trash, you'll be left with lots of annoying virus scan processes on your system that will cause all kinds of issues in the future.

If you get over the rather lengthy installation process, then McAfee VirusScan (formerly known as McAfee Virex) is a no fuss and quick virus checker. I've never had any virus problems on my Mac so far but a tool like this can never hurt. McAfee VirusScan isn't a real-time virus checker - rather it does one of scans of files you're worried about simply by dragging and dropping them into the interface. This is useful if you've received a file and are unsure whether it's safe to open.

Simply drag your file into the McAfee VirusScan and it will scan it instantly. For some reason, it seems to hide the results away in a little box underneath the drag and drop target but you can expand it by clicking the arrow. I'm sure if it does detect a virus, there is a much clearer warning of the result. There are very few configuration options but it does allow you to schedule automatic scans at specific times during the week which can target specific files. This is handy for targeting a download folder for example, or to prevent the need to scan your whole system.

McAfee VirusScan is updated regularly automatically and if you no need to check a virus definition, it takes you straight onto it's online database.

McAfee VirusScan is an effective tool for anyone that just wants to scan a one off file and doesn't need a real time scanner - just beware of the uninstallation process!

Download McAfee VirusScan 9.2 in Softonic

Slender: The Eight Pages for Mac 0.9.7 Beta

Slender for Mac is a first person horror game where your only goal is to find 8 manuscripts about the Slender Man, a paranormal creature. It follows a previous game called <taglink type="program" country="en" id="3349794">Slenderman</taglink> (not available on Mac) based on a similar theme but that was nowhere near as scary or successful.

The myth of Slender started quite simply as a rumor and has also been popularized as an internet meme. The story is that Slender Man is a mythical creature often depicted as a tall, thin figure wearing a black suit and a blank face. According to legend, he can stretch or shorten his arms at will and has tentacle-like appendages on his back. Slender Man can cause memory loss, insomnia, paranoia, coughing fits (nicknamed "slendersickness"), photographic and video distortions and can teleport at will.

The basic premise of the game is the more directly you come in contact with the Slender Man, the faster your sanity drains. You therefore have to careful not to look at the enemy for too long and remember that your flashlight has a limited battery so you must turn it off from time to time to save it. Also, the more you sprint, the lower your maximum stamina becomes, so you must sprint only when you need to.

The controls to the game are simple:

Mouse -- Look around
W,A,S & D -- Move
Left Shift -- Sprint
Left Mouse Click -- Pick up pages
Right Mouse Click -- Flashlight
Q & E -- Zoom in/out

Slender does well in creating quite a creepy atmosphere for a very basic game. It feels like just you, your torch and the sound of crickets chirping as you fumble your way through the forest looking for manuscripts. However, the overall aim of collecting 8 pages of the manuscript is quite limited and so the gameplay is a bit limited.

Note that you'll need an archiving tool like <taglink type="program" country="en" id="55701">The Unarchiver</taglink> or <taglink type="program" country="en" id="27230">RAR</taglink> to unpack this Slender game download. Slender will not perform very well on older Macs too, especially MacBooks from around 2008. If you have problems, try lowering the graphics quality to the lowest setting at the start of the game.

Slender is an eerie horror game that's well worth trying whether or not you've ever heard of the Slender Man myth.

Download Slender: The Eight Pages for Mac 0.9.7 Beta in Softonic

Have you got a corrupt hard drive or one that no longer mounts? Do you need to recover files that have been deleted? If so, Data Rescue 3 may be able to help.

Data Rescue allows you to rescue a damaged hard drive and backup the recovered files to either an internal or external hard drive (USB or FireWire), removable media device (such as a Zip or MO) or a networked drive. ??Alternatively, an optional emergency bootable DVD option is available.

Data Rescue can recover any type of file and can even work if a drive only partially operates. It could be especially useful if you need to recover digital pictures from a camera memory card even after it has been erased or reformatted.

The interface of Data Rescue is very easy to use and well designed. It takes you through three steps - drive selection, analysis and recovery. You can preview files before recovery which is useful since it stops you having to go through the time consuming process of recovery if the files aren't the correct ones you want to recover. However, although Data Rescue's developers make some bold claims about how much it can recover, you may find it's far from perfect and won't be able to help in all circumstances.

Data Rescue is definitely worth a try if all else has failed at recovering a hard drive.

Download Data Rescue 3.2.1 in Softonic

Just like these two applications, Fluid allows you to access all your web apps (like Facebook, Gmail or Campfire) from your desktop. Essentially, Fluid is a simple browser that hosts web applications in a very basic interface. Once you start it up, type the url of your web app in the window, select a name and location, press OK and you're ready to go. The advantage of using it is that you free up your browser for other things. It also uses up very little memory and is very fast.

On the downside, Fluid is in a way like a stripped down browser window. No controls, panel bar or preferences, you only get a browser window for each webapp you launch. This also means that most of the features you take for granted in your browser, such as spell-checking, pop up window management or tabs will not work.

Although it doesn't offer the advanced features of a browser, Fluid is a great tool to access your web apps separately on your Mac desktop.

Download Fluid 1.2 in Softonic

For many parents, being able to control how much time your children spend on the internet and making sure they don't visit the wrong sort of sites is very important. GiddyUp (formerly CutX) is a kid safe browser then ensures they are protected from adult and senior content on the internet.

GiddyUp is a secure web browser designed for children that's frequently used by schools to ensure that they surf child safe content. GiddyUp easily allows parents and teachers to restrict access to web sites, operating system, system settings and stops them from downloading files and applications.

In terms of performance, GiddyUp works very similar Safari because its based on the same WebKit engine. Customizing and controlling GiddyUp is easy and the browser is very stable. However, like many such applications, it can be rather indiscriminate in the way it applies the child block and can censor perfectly safe material which may cause parents and teachers more hassle than its worth.

Overall though, GiddyUp is an excellent choice for parents and teachers that need a basic but functional browser for children.

Download GiddyUp 1.1.1 in Softonic

The resulting file can then be sent via email with no need for the recipient to have pdfCompress installed. pdfCompress features a wide variety of compression methods such as LZW, Flate, JPEG, font removal, CCITTT Group 4, dead-object stripping and metadata removal so if you have problems with one, you should be able to revert to another no problem.

To use pdfCompress, simply drag and drop the PDF document of your choosing into the PDF icon in your Dock. A small progress bar will show you the status of your conversion, although it doesn't stay on the screen for very long. pdfCompress automatically chooses the most appropriate compression rate for your file, although depending on the content inside your document, it doesn't necessarily mean it will work the best. Don't worry about your original file - pdfCompress never modifies it and labels compressed files so that it's clear which have and have not been compressed. There is a small preference panel which with a sliding bar, allows you to select the level of compression that you need.

Although pdfCompress doesn't shave much off your original files (I reduced a 1MB file to 866KB), it is a very fast and simple way to reduce the size of your PDF files.

Download pdfCompress 6.3 in Softonic

However, it's also suitable for those that just want to keep their Mac hard drive in tip top condition catering for those that want to partition, defrag, and even copy the contents of their drive. If you need to test or benchmark your Mac, Drive Genius has a bench test and surface scan feature that allows you to scan for bad sectors that are causing problems. Finally, there's also a handy shredding tool for destroying files and documents that contain sensitive data.

What attracts most users to Drive Genius is the fact that it's one of the few Mac utilities that will physically scan for bad sectors. That's also accompanied by one of the best interfaces I've seen on a maintenance program for the Mac since the arrival of MacKeeper. Drive Genius has an animated user interface that's a little like cycling through albums in iTunes. Each of the functions such as Defrag, Benchtestand Scan animate when you select them. There's nothing complicated about executing each task either - just select the drive you want to scan along the left hand side and click Start.

There is little to fault with Drive Genius. Those using slower machines may have problems with the animated menu but you can deactivate it via preferences. Other than to check for regular updates, there are virtually no other preferences though.

Drive Genius is an elegant and comprehensive maintenance tool that should be able to eliminate those bad sectors that have been causing your Mac grief.

Download Drive Genius 3.1 in Softonic

Pando 2.5.1.4

If you’ve ever had to publish, send or receive particularly large files sizes, you’ll know that it can throw up all kinds of problems – crashed servers, blocked inboxes and transfers that suddenly just hang-up. Pando aims to take the pain out of this process and according to the developers, 3 million people agree that it does exactly that.

Pando is based on a P2P network that enables you to send files of up to 1GB in size by e-mail or by publishing it to the web. It supports all multimedia file types including video, audio and photos meaning it’s great for people who deal with audio-visual files regularly.

For most users, the major benefit will be with e-mail attachments and the good news is, there's no need to change your existing e-mail client. Pando works by creating a torrent-like link file which you can then send in the body of your e-mail for the recipient to click on. There’s no need to be online when the recipient downloads the file and there’s no compression, FTP or dodgy web uploading applets to deal with. The reason you don’'t need to be online is because Pando sends files to its "super-node" servers, which means that there's always at least one "seeder" online at any given time. This seed is guaranteed for 14 days so even if you log off, your recipient can still view it. Obviously, the more people that share it too, the faster the download.

For those unfamiliar with FTP, Pando is fantastic since it works on the same principle as a Bittorrent client. Once the small interface is opened, you can drag and drop or select “add-file” to create a ".pando” file which you can then e-mail to whoever you want once it is uploaded.

The main drawback is that the recipient has to have Pando installed to receive the file. If you transfer files to someone regularly, this is not a problem but if it’'s just the odd file you want to send, then it could be a nuisance to ask someone to install it just to see your file. Be warned also that Pando cannot guarantee security although the developers assure that Pando has 256bit AES end-to-end encryption built in making it technically one of the most secure ways to transfers files online today. The only way that someone could realistically compromise your security however is by hacking into your e-mail account.

Whilst Pando is obviously open to abuse by sharing illegal files, most people go to the major Torrent sites to do that, meaning Pando is refreshingly free of any copyrighted material flying around and causing problems. Overall, it’'s a great solution for those unfamiliar with FTP who need to send big files regularly.

Download Pando 2.5.1.4 in Softonic

Script Debugger goes beyond diagnosis, however, by suggesting solutions automatically with its integrated AppleScript dictionary. It's simple enough for novice developers but at the same time, should be enough to satisfy the needs of intermediate and advanced Apple Script writers.

Script Debugger is extremely simple to use if you just want to perform a one-off check. You can view errors very simply just by copying and pasting script into the compiler itself. However, to search scripts thoroughly and be provided with possible solutions, you need to follow the step-by-step instructions detailed in the Quick Start guide, which include creating a working folder. The instructions are very clear and detailed, and within 20-30 minutes any beginner should be able to master Script Debugger with ease.

If you've been tearing your hair out over Apple Script errors, Script Debugger could save you hours of wasted time.

Download Script Debugger 4.5.5 in Softonic

Klix is a very simple program that will get the job done for you. Connect your camera to your computer, launch Klix, and all you'll have to do is press scan. The program can take a while to perform this, depending on the number of images you're searching for. Overall, it does a good job at recovering photos but beware that some of them can reappear in a weird state or with different colors. However that can have to do with your camera itself more than the program.

Klix can look for around a dozen image file formats, including popular ones like GIF or JPEG. It can also automatically hide all corrupt images. We were satisfied with how Klix performed and thought it was a very intuitive and easy to use recovery program. We recommend having it on hand for that moment when your camera crashes.

Foldit Beta

If you're looking for a puzzle game with a humanitarian cause (and I never thought I'd say that!) then you might find Foldit worth checking out.

Foldit claims to be a 'revolutionary new computer game' that enables you to contribute to important scientific research while solving a series of biological puzzles. The aim is to help the scientists behind it understand the function of proteins and amino acids. If it sounds a bit weird then bear with me, because it does work, apparently.

Foldit requires you to solve increasingly complex protein chain puzzles with the help of a Dr. David Baker. As you solve the connection puzzles, you earn points, which help you rise up the online rankings, so you're effectively competing with players across the Net.

How does this help further medical science I hear you say? The performance of different competitors helps scientists to discover whether humans' pattern-recognition and puzzle-solving abilities make them more efficient than existing computer programs at pattern-folding tasks. The theory is, if this is the case, human strategies can be taught to computers to fold proteins faster than ever and thus speed-up research into life threating illnesses.

So what of the game itself? You have to use the cursor to manipulate a chain of amino acids anywhere along it. The aim to fold the protein into its optimum shape. The only rules are based on physics which means that opposite attract, you can rotate all bonds as easily as others and generally, the molecule isn't as easy to manipulate as it should be. However, the closer you get to the optimum shape, the more points you score.

It has to be said that Foldit isn't the most engaging game you'll ever play but the fact that it's doing some real good for medical research means you're doing more than just kill a few minutes of time.

Download Foldit Beta in Softonic

ShapeShifter 2.5

The first time I ever heard about Shapeshifting was in Sci-fi programs, where evil aliens lured the good guys to their doom by changing their appearance

I'm pleased to say that ShapeShifter has nothing to do with luring people to their doom, but it does have to do with changing appearance - namely OS X into something entirely new (not a lizard though). ShapeShifter isn't just a set of icons though - it completely changes everything from the look of menus and windows to buttons, folders and more. The idea here is to allow you to change the look of OS X as you would change your clothes, your car or anything else that we all grow bored with on a regular basis.

Once installed, ShapeShifter appears in your mac's Appearance tab, giving you a huge number of themes to choose from. You have a preview picture of what each one looks like and you can easily activate and deactivate them if you don't like them. If you want to tweak a theme to your liking, you can do this too by keeping some aspects and discarding others. You can for example, only apply a specific theme to your icons but not the rest of OS X.

Many of the themes are a bit too gaudy and weird for my tasted although some are elegant enough to grace any Mac. Fortunately, you can download more themes through the download button in ShapeShifter plus there are other sites such as resexcellence.com and interfaceLEFT.com where you can download more. The major disadvantage of ShapeShifter is that it may cause instability with individual applications that aren't familiar with the fonts, typesetting and format of different themes.

ShapeShifter is a handy application for all those that are constantly customizing the look of OS X and want more than just a pack of different icons.

Download ShapeShifter 2.5 in Softonic
