When you launch TuneUp Utilities for the first time, the programs performs a system analysis and displays the 1-Click Maintenance window. This provides you with an overview of your computer's main problem areas, the specific problems it has found and a "1-click" button to fix them.

You can open TuneUp Utilities' main window later. It's divided into several tabs, each one of them devoted to a different purpose: status & recommendations, gain disk space, customize Windows and more. The whole program exudes a clean efficiency, with only the essential information showing unless you choose to look deeper into any one option. Mixxx is a free open source DJ app that allows you to mix your MP3 collection together, for parties, clubs or just for fun.

Installation is simple, all you have to do is specify your music library (you can add other later if you want). Mixxx will then import your collection, which may take a few minutes if you have lots of files, but it will only do this once.

Mixxx's interface might be a bit intimidating for beginners, but if you're eager to learn, it's not difficult to get the hang of it. There are two channels, and you load tracks into them with a right click. Each channel has its own controls, from play and pause to tone control. In the center are the global controls, with volume, balance and most importantly the cross-fader which allows you to mix between the two channels. The music waveforms are arranged one on top of the other, like Virtual DJ, which can make beat matching easier.

Mixxx is controlled either with the mouse or hot keys, which are specified in the included manual. In terms of help for beginners, each channel has a "sync" button, which will attempt to synchronize the BPM (beats per minute) of one track with another. The user still has to start the track in time with the other one, so Mixxx won't do the mixing for you!

Mixxx is a solid DJing application, with good BPM estimation, and controls that are easy to pick up for anyone who's seen a mixer before, and intuitive enough for a beginner to learn.

Debut Video Capture enables you to record video from any image source on your PC, be it the screen itself or a USB video device connected to your computer, such as a digital video camera or a webcam.

Debut Video Capture is very easy to use: its interface offers a preview of what will be recorded, although in the case of screen recording, this is pretty confusing as the image repeats itself ad finitum. Besides that, everything in Debut Video Capture is controlled with three simple buttons (record, pause and stop) so that gives you an idea about the simplicity of the program.

Recordings can be done in a variety of formats, and each one has its own configuration settings. An interesting option is the possibility to download related programs from the same developer. Debut Video Capture also enables you to email the videos or upload them to an FTP server right after recording them. However, we did miss an embedded player with which to revise our recordings.

Firefox is of course Mozilla's big success story but the Mozilla Foundation do a lot more than web browsers. The unusually named SeaMonkey is a Mozilla product which has lofty ambitions - to be a web browser, advanced email, newsgroup and feed client, IRC chat, and HTML editor in one.

If this sounds a bit much to pull of well you'd be right. SeaMonkey is a bit of an outdated concept nowadays and it's no surprise that it carried on the work that Netscape started many years ago. It's a lot to get right in one go but this latest release sees SeaMonkey finally brought up to date for the demands of internet users today. And you know from the start it can't be that bad - under the hood, SeaMonkey is based on the same Mozilla source code which powers such things as Firefox, Thunderbird, Camino, Sunbird and Miro.

The similarities of SeaMonkey with Firefox are obvious from the start and with good reason. SeaMonkey 2.0 has been refurbished with a modern version of Firefox based on Firefox 3.5.4 and is now much closer to Firefox as far as user profiles, add-ons, and functionality of user interface elements are concerned. Tabs in SeaMonkey can now be reopened after they have been closed and the way passwords and usernames are handled has been overhauled. To select another part of the suite you want to use, just go to the 'Window' option in the Menu Bar and select either Browser, Mail and Newsgroups, Address Book, IRC Chat and Composer.

There are several other major improvements in SeaMonkey related to the mail client. Setting up an account is easy and retrieving e-mail using the IMAP (Internet Message Access Protocol) protocol is now faster and mail is synchronized by default by your computer. And at long last, email accounts, folders, and messages can be viewed in tabs.

On the downside, in terms of looks, SeaMonkey hasn't changed an awful lot despite the release of Windows 7. The IRC chat client still looks very basic, techy and intimidating too. Also, some people feel that the new SeaMonkey has moved too far away from it's original Netscape origins in look, functionality and feel. Finally, there seems there is no basic import function to import passwords from earlier versions of Seamonkey or even Firefox, which is a bit annoying.

SeaMonkey will still probably still only appeal to those that have used it from version 1.0 but there's no doubt that this latest release makes it a much more competitive web suite.

If you’re a bit of a computer whiz, then you probably often get asked by friends and family to sort out their latest PC disaster. However, if you live far apart, have a busy lifestyle or can’t get there easily physically, you might find Crossloop a godsend. There are many applications out there that allow you to share desktops but perhaps none that do it more easily and simply than Crossloop.

CrossLoop is basically a free secure screen sharing utility designed for people of all technical backgrounds so you don’t need to be a geek to use it. It allows you to connect to another user's computer and share their desktop without having to change any firewall or router settings. This is obviously perfect if you need to find out why someone is having problems with their PC or if you just want to simply share information with them.

After installing CrossLoop, you will see a welcome screen with two tabs. Select the ‘Join’ tab if you would like to connect and control a friend's PC. Select the ‘Host’ tab if you would like to temporarily share access to your PC. This host tab contains an important 12-digit access code that your friend will need to enter to connect to your PC. Obviously, the only requirement is that your friend has Crossloop installed too to initiate a session. Once done, you’re ready to go. A separate window opens with your friend’s desktop and you can tinker to your hearts content.

There’s not much you can do to customise such a simple program but the developers have recently spiced up the tabs with some new skins such as Aqua, Jungle, Nebula and even Pink Lemonade. The most recent release features a completely new design and they've extended the networking community functions. Now you can create your own profile where you can view your login history and rate those that have helped you. For those that are really handy, you can also receive a Crossloop "badge" and advertise your services on the site - great for IT support professionals.

Obviously, the main concern with such P2P connections is security. However, the developers maintain that all sent information is highly encrypted with a128-bit algorithm using the randomly generated 12-digit access code mentioned earlier. There’s no need to worry about anyone accessing your PC without permission either – a popup requesting permission from you alerts you before any information is exchanged.

The only real drawbacks of Crossloop are that as yet, it doesn’t offer file sending or a chat function. This is not a disaster because you can always use a separate instant messaging application to do this but these features would be the icing on the cake. Nevertheless, Crossloop really is an excellent application for what it offers. The fact that it is free only adds to its appeal, considering similar programs such as Copilot charge anything up to $5 for 24 hours of use. However, the popularity of this program means that the developers may start charging for it soon: so take advantage of it now whilst it's free!

Almost identical to Microsoft Word in appearance, Kingsoft Writer Professional 2012 is a good alternative that's also compatible with Microsoft's popular word processor. In fact Greasemonkey is not an application in itself. It’s a Firefox add-on that prepares your browser to support Greasemonkey scripts. The add-on puts a small monkey icon in the bottom right corner, from where you can add new scripts and manage the ones you’ve already installed. Lovers of Celtic mythology will appreciate the storyline and graphics in Vindictus, as that's what it's based on. This 3D fantasy action came lets you fight your way through different stages of gameplay with up to four other players as members of your party.

Your character is very customizable in Vindictus, allowing you to choose everything from your armor to your undergarments. To get full customization, Vindictus requires in-app purchases, which includes the ability to choose color shading as well. It's a nice feature for people who want their character to be recognizable and stand out. Some players might be disappointed in that there isn't a big variety of characters to currently choose from compared to other games in its class.

Graphics in Vindictus are very crisp and impressive. It's the little details that matter here, and the background imagery is really quite well put-together. It's hard to really take time to enjoy the setting though, as Vindictus is action-packed and chances are you'll be busy fending off all manner of enemy attacks. The combat can get repetitive and you may need to repeat stages in order to move forward in the game though.

Players navigate through Vindictus with their keyboard keys. This is also how you attack your enemies. While it can take time to get used to which keys do what, it gets easier as you continue to play and isn't a major impediment to learning to play the game.

This game might be considered a little too violent for younger children due to graphic fight scenes, so parents be cautioned.

Vindictus makes fighting fun with great graphics and a fun storyline.
