Luckily, if you install Elecont Weather on your PDA, you shouldn't get caught unprepared again. This Windows Mobile application provides you with 10-day, up-to-the-hour forecasts forecasts for more than 51,000 different cities across the World, using weather data from the WSI Corp.

Elecont Weather displays forecasts for the next 10 days from a new panel on your Today screen. Each day is given a weather icon and a temperature and scrolling forward and backwards through the days is done by clicking on the left and right arrows. It makes for a really neat, at-a-glance view of the climate for the next few days. Best of all, it's constantly updated, so you can be sure that the information is pretty accurate.

Opening up the Elecont Weather application itself offers you the chance to add new cities to your profile, rename cities, and perform live updates. The Options menu lets you play around with all manner of settings, including customizing the Today screen view, unit of measurement, background, language, icons, animations, and more. The 'Details' section even lets you mess around with fonts, sizes and text colors.

I must say that I found the user interface within Elecont Weather a little irritating. The layout and structure of the Options menu is a bit confusing, and when adding a city you need to choose the country first, rather than just being able to type the name of the city and access the suggestions list straight away.

On the whole though, Elecont Weather provides a clear and accurate way to check the forecast for the coming days.

Elecont Launcher is a fully-featured quick launch plug-in for your Today screen, designed to provide you with speedy access to your favorite programs, web addresses, documents, or control panel items.

Setting up Elecont Launcher proves very easy. You simply need to click the icons you want to appear on the Today screen from the list displayed. Here you can even set up quick links to files on your device that you regularly need access to. Other things you can customize are the size of the icons (small, medium, big, very big), sounds, and the interface language.

Elecont Launcher certainly offers a finger-friendly way of accessing apps and files from the main Pocket PC display. However, you should be careful about adding too many shortcuts with Elecont Launcher, as your Today screen can end up looking a little overcrowded.

This Windows Mobile program provides instant, bi-directional translations of thousands of useful phrases. The phrases are divided neatly into categories based around what situation you might find yourself in. These include Basics, Traveling, Hotel, Food and drinks, Sport/Leisure, etc. All categories are readily accessible from the Home menu in Talking Phrasebook, where they are clearly labeled with icons. Note that only the first two topics (Basics and Traveling) are available in this trial version.

Lingvosoft Talking PhraseBook 2009 is dead easy to use thanks to its colorful, user-friendly interface. This interface is customizable with themes, and has a handy search function for quickly finding phrases among the thousands stored within the app.

It's worth noting that Lingvosoft Talking PhraseBook 2009 doesn't let you look up individual words to translate. For this, you need to choose 'Related Software' from the 'Tools' menu and select 'Translate in Dictionary'. You will then have to install Lingvosoft Dictionary.

One common complaint of almost all mobile devices is that typing on them is a real chore. Cliquick looks to address this issue by providing a new keypad with finger-friendly keys to make typing quicker and easier.

Cliquick claims to improve your typing speed by 100% over the standard Pocket PC keypad. I'm not quite sure it's this much different, but it's definitely faster, for a few different reasons. Firstly, it reconfigures the position of letters on the numeric pad so that the most frequently-used letters are assigned in the first position, meaning you only have to press the button once in order to input the letter. What's more, there are only two characters per key, so in general it requires less taps to enter words.

Another important element of Cliquick is the integrated word auto-completion feature, which is generally pretty accurate. The program will also suggest words as you type, which I personally find a little annoying, but which can be useful for some people.

Cliquick is highly customizable too, allowing you to not only choose from three keypad sizes, but also to apply actions such as vibration when a key is pressed, or typewriter sounds that play when you enter text.

Cliquick is currently only available with English or Russian localizations, so it may be frustrating or even impossible for you to use if you speak a different language to these.

If you want to improve your typing speed on your Pocket PC, then Cliquick comes highly recommended.

If you own a Windows Mobile device and are thinking of buying a sat nav device for your car, then stop for a second. These days you can get a decent GPS navigation software utility for a fraction of the cost of a completely new unit.

NAVIGON MobileNavigator is one such example. This European Edition of the app allows you to find your way around the continent using your Windows Mobile device. You can choose to purchase maps of specific countries, or get a complete Europe-wide set of maps (the 30-day trial version comes with all maps included).

Installation of NAVIGON MobileNavigator is pretty long-winded so make sure you set plenty of time aside for getting it set up. After running the desktop installer on your PC you need to transfer the data onto an SD memory card via a USB reader, that you'll then insert into your PDA. As well as selecting the maps, the NAVIGON MobileNavigator installer also lets you set the language and the voices you want to read the directions. There's a wide range of these, covering lots of nationalities (although for some reason, they're all women). Once installation is complete and you launch NAVIGON MobileNavigator on your mobile, the program will perform a validity check on the Navigon PDA server to see that your trial hasn't expired. So, you have to have a working Internet connection for this to work.

Once all that's out the way, you can finally start enjoying NAVIGON MobileNavigator. The main menu presents you with options for viewing a map of where you are, entering a new destination, or choosing an existing destination from your favorites. There's also a 'Services' section that includes a handy weather service and HRS Hotel reservation service.

Probably the first thing you'll want to do is to enter a journey destination. This couldn't be easier - you just hit 'New Destination' then you can address using the on-screen keyboard to type in the country, city, street, etc. As you type, NAVIGON MobileNavigator gives you suggestions, so it doesn't take long to get this information in. Alternatively, you can search for a point of interest (POIs), or get direct access to services such as petrol stations, parking and restaurants.

The navigation maps themselves are excellent, and are everything you'd expect from a decent sat nav service. You can view maps in 2D or 3D, and there are a few features available to you while the navigation is in progress. For instance, you can toggle between day and night mode, add an interim destination, insert a block, or list all of the POIs on your route. Other features built into the maps are a speed limit, as well as Navigon's Lane Assistance tool that outlines in details the lane layout of junctions.

I found the interface within NAVIGON MobileNavigator to be very easy to use. The buttons are touch-friendly, map movement is smooth and responsive, and the inclusion of a 'Back' button on the toolbar is a stroke of genius.

It may be a little clunkier to set up than an out-of-the box sat nav solution, but at least NAVIGON MobileNavigator will cut down the number of gadgets you have to carry about with you.

Despite all the latest computer gaming technology and newfangled consoles, it's often the most basic games that stand the test of time - like Uno, for instance.

Pocket Uno is a Windows Mobile version of the classic card game, whereby you need to be the first person to get rid of all your cards. It's a faithful recreation of the original, with the same colors and designs on the cards and exactly the same rules.

It actually takes a little while to get into Pocket Uno. For starters, the program first launches in Esperanto for some bizarre reason. Luckily, you can change this to one of five other languages via the 'Lingvo' option. Also, if you've never played Uno before you might want to read the rules on the Internet or in a book first because there is no help file included.

There are several options available in Pocket Uno to help you customize your games. There are three difficulty levels, controllable animation speed, plus the ability to toggle on and off the background display. Unfortunately though, you can't change the number of computer opponents (it's set at three) and, more crucially, there's no multiplayer option.

Despite these shortcomings, Pocket Uno is still and enjoyable and well-presented version of a card game classic.

PocketWeather from SBSH allows you to view up-to-the-minute information on weather conditions in cities and towns all over the world, in a standalone application and as a plugin for your Today screen. The range of locations available, the wealth of climatic information provided and the simplicity of the Today screen plugin are all impressive, as is the small size of the program. It can even give you information on recent earthquakes!

PocketWeather provides a wide range of settings which allow you to select your locations, order them by importance, set the frequency of updates, choose your preferred language and more. You can also choose how your locations are displayed on the Today screen and if you have a high-end device, you can select VGA icons for extra eye-candy points.

For many users, the weather data you have on your device will be updated most often via your dock or USB cable. I found that I had to adjust the connection settings in PocketWeather manually in order to allow it to connect in this way. Another small issue I had was that I couldn’t set the program to update forecast data more than once every four hours. Updating current conditions can be done far more frequently, but I feel that forecast data ought to be just as up to date. Finally, I found that if I changed any settings, I would have to ‘apply’ them before moving to another tab in the options dialog. A warning would come in handy here, as at first I kept losing changes I had made because they were discarded automatically.

These problems however are fairly minor and don’t detract from the overall quality of the application. If you’re looking for one interesting and attractive plugin for your Today screen, PocketWeather is highly recommended.

First came the keypad, then the touchscreen, and now voice input is being touted as the new revolution in smartphone interfaces.

Speereo Voice Launcher allows you to open applications and documents through voice commands. Setting this up is a surprisingly quick and painless affair. You just need to set the Applications and Web sites that you want to assign voice commands to, then speak the command you want to use into your device. Then, when you want to open that app or site you just need to hold down one of the handware buttons (you can configure which one yourself) then speak the command to open the app.

The good thing about the voice recognition system in Speereo Voice Launcher is that it is based on your own voice and phrases of your choice, rather than preset commands. This means you can configure it in any language and with any command. The recognition works quite well, as long as you're not somewhere with lots of background noise. You'll find that you need to talk clearly, slowly and with precision for the program to work best.

Speereo Voice Launcher comes in the form of a Today screen plug-in and a floating toolbar, either of which can be disabled or enabled. The plug-in is great because it gives you shortcuts to contacts, tasks, games, calendar, etc. from one bar, meaning you can hide most of the existing items on the Today screen to free up space.

I found the floating toolbar in Speereo Voice Launcher to be rather annoying, mainly due to the fact that it sits right in the middle of the screen and cannot be picked up and moved around.

Aside from a few quirks though, Speereo Voice Launcher provides a novel new way to control Windows Mobile.

If you're going on a trip to Spain or Latin America - or if you just want to learn Spanish - then this application is well worth checking out.

Talking VOX English-Spanish and Spanish-English dictionary contains a database of around 68,000 words and phrases to help you translate between the languages. The app contains lots of usage examples, grammatical pointers, and native terminology.

Talking VOX comes with predictive text entry, so as soon as you start typing a word, a list of possible matches is displayed. There's even a Wildcard search facility, to help you look up words when you're not quite sure of the spelling. There is a sound module within the program that can speak many of the words to you at the click of a button.

Another great thing about the Talking VOX English-Spanish and Spanish-English dictionary is its 'resident module'. This allows you to look up words or phrases without leaving the application you're running (e.g. Internet Explorer, Windows Live Mail, Office Mobile, etc.). You can configure the resident module to be launched via keyboard shortcuts or hardware buttons.

Besides just being an excellent reference, Talking VOX makes for a great study aid, too. You can mark words to be added to a list of flash cards, which can then be used to test yourself in the form of a quiz, within the program.

Because of the magnitude of the program, Talking VOX can be a little tricky to find your way around at first. I particularly found it strange that there are two separate context menus, depending on whether you've hit 'Translate' or not. Personally, I felt that these could've been combined into one to make things easier.

That said, Talking VOX English-Spanish and Spanish-English dictionary makes for handy, pocket-sized travel companion and study aid.

Browsing the Web on a mobile phone is traditionally such a painful process that many of us simply don't bother. Thankfully things are beginning to change though. We've already seen the Beta release of the slick Opera Mobile browser for Windows Mobile devices. Now, Mozilla is getting in on the act with its Firefox Mobile browser, code-named Fennec.

What's inside?

Touch-screen users will love the way that Firefox Mobile is organized. The main window dedicates pretty much the whole screen space to the web page itself rather than placing loads of tools and options on screen. In fact, the only things displayed here other than the web page itself are the large, touch-friendly address bar and bookmarks button.

Firefox Mobile avoids clutter by locking its settings in a menu that can only be viewed by dragging the screen to the right. Here, you can tinker with options for JavaScript, cookies, passwords, etc., as well as managing your plug-ins. Yes, that's right, Firefox Mobile will be fully extensible, and this version even picks up the add-ons you've got installed in your desktop version of the browser.

The joy of tabs

Perhaps the feature I like most in Firefox Mobile, is the way it handles tabs. Instead of displaying tabs underneath the address bar like in normal Firefox, this version stores all your tabs in a hidden area on the left, which again, can be opened by dragging your finger across the screen - this time to the left. This is another way in which the program optimizes screen space without sacrificing functionality.

There are other features on the horizon that haven't been wholly integrated into the Fennec alpha yet, such as quick dial for phone numbers on Web pages, and more work will be done to support maps and GPS tools. In fact, the sky is the limit really in terms of features if enough developers get excited about Firefox Mobile. Mozilla is banking on the fact that developers can build apps and add-ons freely using AJAX, CSS, JavaScript or HTML, rather than having to learn new techniques to code projects for multiple mobile platforms using multiple languages.

For now though, Fennec is a very crude version of Firefox Mobile, which is rife with display errors, bugs and feels very much incomplete.

Nevertheless, if you want a sneaky peak at how the future of mobile Web browsing might look on a HTC Touch Pro, Firefox Mobile is worth a look.
