The Unarchiver is designed as a more complete replacement for the Archive Utility app that's built-into OS X.

The Unarchiver is better than the default OS X app because it can handle many more formats and integrates better with Finder. In addition, it can also handle filenames in foreign character and supports a huge range of formats including Zip, Tar-GZip, Tar-BZip2, Rar, 7-zip, LhA, StuffIt and many others.

There really is very little to criticize in The Unarchiver. It's fast, free and can handle just about anything. It's easy to use and doesn't consume a lot of system resources. The only thing some people may miss is a 64 bit version although it's hardly necessary.

The Unarchiver is everything a decompression package should be and best of all, it's free.

Download The Unarchiver 3.7 in Softonic

Slender: The Eight Pages for Mac 0.9.7 Beta

Slender for Mac is a first person horror game where your only goal is to find 8 manuscripts about the Slender Man, a paranormal creature. It follows a previous game called <taglink type="program" country="en" id="3349794">Slenderman</taglink> (not available on Mac) based on a similar theme but that was nowhere near as scary or successful.

The myth of Slender started quite simply as a rumor and has also been popularized as an internet meme. The story is that Slender Man is a mythical creature often depicted as a tall, thin figure wearing a black suit and a blank face. According to legend, he can stretch or shorten his arms at will and has tentacle-like appendages on his back. Slender Man can cause memory loss, insomnia, paranoia, coughing fits (nicknamed "slendersickness"), photographic and video distortions and can teleport at will.

The basic premise of the game is the more directly you come in contact with the Slender Man, the faster your sanity drains. You therefore have to careful not to look at the enemy for too long and remember that your flashlight has a limited battery so you must turn it off from time to time to save it. Also, the more you sprint, the lower your maximum stamina becomes, so you must sprint only when you need to.

The controls to the game are simple:

Mouse -- Look around
W,A,S & D -- Move
Left Shift -- Sprint
Left Mouse Click -- Pick up pages
Right Mouse Click -- Flashlight
Q & E -- Zoom in/out

Slender does well in creating quite a creepy atmosphere for a very basic game. It feels like just you, your torch and the sound of crickets chirping as you fumble your way through the forest looking for manuscripts. However, the overall aim of collecting 8 pages of the manuscript is quite limited and so the gameplay is a bit limited.

Note that you'll need an archiving tool like <taglink type="program" country="en" id="55701">The Unarchiver</taglink> or <taglink type="program" country="en" id="27230">RAR</taglink> to unpack this Slender game download. Slender will not perform very well on older Macs too, especially MacBooks from around 2008. If you have problems, try lowering the graphics quality to the lowest setting at the start of the game.

Slender is an eerie horror game that's well worth trying whether or not you've ever heard of the Slender Man myth.

Download Slender: The Eight Pages for Mac 0.9.7 Beta in Softonic

SimplyRAR 1.10

SimplyRAR is an easy-to-use file archiver for your Mac.

One of the problems with RAR archivers for the Mac like RAR - which is essentially the same as WinRAR, except for Macs, obviously - is that they often come without any kind of graphical user interface, meaning it's difficult for new users to install and use them.

As the name suggests, SimplyRAR is a very easy to use archiver that makes archiving and unarchiving files a breeze. Opening archives is as easy as simply browsing to them, and SimplyRAR instantly displays a log of the results. The same goes for archiving RAR files on SimplyRAR. Even easier is the fact that - as in Windows with the WinRAR free download - you can simply right click on an archive to zip it up or unzip it.

Unfortunately, the developer of SimplyRAR doesn't seem to be in business anymore, meaning it will be difficult to get support for this app if you have any problems. It's possible that the SimplyRAR license holders of the RAR protocol have "banned" this app which is possibly why the developer has disappeared. There have also been some complaints that it uses a lot of RAM.

SimplyRAR is one of the easiest RAR archive tools out there on the Mac.

Download SimplyRAR 1.10 in Softonic

Untar 1.3.2

In the "old days" of UNIX, compressing/uncompressing and archiving/unarchiving files involved cryptic commands such as tar -xvf somefile.tar. However, since those days, the masses have come to use computers, and they expect an easy to use system with graphical elements and interaction. The days of the command-line interface are distant, and expecting the average user to resort to those older methods is normally out of the question. This is where Untar steps in.

Untar is a wrapper application which acts as the front end to the 7za, tar, gzip, compress, bzip2, rar, and zip utilities. These utilities handle the complicated work, while Untar provides a pleasant and easy method to interact with the system tools.

Download Untar 1.3.2 in Softonic
