Desk Drive can help you manage USB removable devices in a much more comfortable way by automatically creating a desktop shortcut every time you connect a USB device to your computer. This is the way USB memory sticks are usually handled with in Mac OS and Linux, so if you're used to those operating systems and miss that functionality in Windows, you'll love Desk Drive.

The program is really easy to use: simply launch it and it'll rest in silence on the system tray, waiting for the moment you plug a USB device, in which it'll create a desktop shortcut to access the USB content.

Desk Drive makes USB device management easier on Windows, but my advice is to disable the autoplay window, as it interrupts the whole process and makes the program not that useful anymore.

As long as you also disable the autoplay dialog window, Desk Drive makes USB memory device management really comfortable on Windows – just like Mac OS and Linux.

Download Desk Drive 1.6.2 in Softonic

Although the program still feels quite unstable (importing or exporting didn't work properly for me), we'll let that go for now as the program is still a pre-release. What makes Librarian Pro interesting is how easy it is to view your list and create new smart collections.

You can customize the layout of lists you export and send them to the web or to your iPod. Librarian can also import elements from mulitple sources, like borrowers from your Address Book or item information from a number of sites. You can view your Amazon cart from the application and even retrieve things like album covers.

If so, and this should be standard with Windows in my opinion, allSnap Portable is a small system tray app that makes all top level windows automatically align like they do in programs such as Winamp or Photoshop. Simply double click on the allSnap Portable system tray icon or right click on it and your windows will snap into line.

Once allSnap Portable is up and running, all windows will snap into each other and the desktop while you are re-moving and re-sizing. Alternatively, you can hold down ALT while sizing and moving windows to toggle allSnap Portable on and off if the snapping becomes a bit too annoying (which it can do if you don't particularly want your Windows). You can access the allSnap Portable program settings by clicking on the system tray icon as well.

R-Studio Data Recovery 4.2.127464

It has happened to us all. We've lost or deleted a file at some stage that was really important. Of course, nowadays, with so many external backup options there is less chance it's going to happen but if it does, there is still hope. R-Studio Data Recovery, although sounding like a music program, actually helps you recover lost or accidentally deleted files. It's not a sure-fire solution but it can help depending on the type of file you've deleted.

When R-Studio Demo version has found a lost file larger than 64KB you may simply double click the file to preview it. However, in this demo version, if you want to open it you'll need to register the software to obtain the R-Studio registration key. However, if you have enough disk space on any additional hard drive or on an alternative media the developers recommend that you create an image of the recognized partition where the lost files were found, because Windows OS constantly writes some information on disks and there is a risk that the sectors where the deleted files reside may be overwritten. According to them, "If that happens, the files still may be found, but may contain incorrect data or cannot be found at all." They assure however that the created image can be processed the same way as the original partition. The program supports a wide range of drives including dynamic disk and RAID drives. It's also able to recover encrypted and compressed files so if your lost file was zipped-up, there's still a chance you can recover it. For those who know how to edit MFT file records and MBR/LDM structures, they can be viewed and edited in the program's accompanying disk hex editor.

The program makers do issue one serious word of warning however - never try to write the image file or recovered deleted files to the same disk where the files reside or you may lose the data on your disk.

R-Studio can't guarantee to rescue all files but it's definitely worth a shot if the worst has happened.

Download R-Studio Data Recovery 4.2.127464 in Softonic

First of all, bear in mind that this app was originally written for another operating system, which means that the Windows version, according to the author's own words, is not as stable as the original one. In fact I got the odd error message while testing it, but other than that, the program worked fine. Transfer speed was excellent, along with the array of tools the program puts at your disposal to handle torrent files. Also, the program was totally unobtrusive for the user and very light on resources.

Deluge features a clear, uncluttered interface where you can easily manage all your file transfers and see information about each one of them. Also, the program's configuration settings enable you to tweak its behavior in great detail: you'll be able to limit bandwidth usage, configure a proxy server and also enable special plug-ins to add extra functionality to the program.

In all, Deluge is a powerful, easy-to-use BitTorrent client that's worth a try and will hopefully improve its stability under Windows in future releases.

Download Deluge 1.0.0 RC 3 in Softonic

LeopardXP BricoPack is a visual theme for Windows XP that completely transforms your old Microsoft OS into the brand new Apple system in just a couple of clicks. Unlike other visual themes that need certain libraries and drivers, or require you to install third-party apps on your own, LeopardXP BricoPack includes everything you need and is incredibly easy to install: click on the Next button a few times, wait for a while, restart and that's it.

LeopardXP BricoPack is obviously not like the real thing but it does quite a good job in trying to make Windows XP look like the Leopard OS. Not only does it install new skins, wallpapers and icons, but it also adds new functionalities such as a Mac OS style dock bar, a Spotlight clone (which by the way doesn't seem to work properly), a top toolbar and a similar file explorer. All of these are included in LeopardXP BricoPack as extra tools and you can choose not to install them. Also, LeopardXP works fine even in systems with low resources.

On the downside, there are still a few areas in which LeopardXP BricoPack could be improved: for example, there are some Windows icons that the theme doesn't replace and don't really fit in, like the Windows logon and switch off screens.

LeopardXP BricoPack is an attractive visual theme that completely transforms Windows XP into Mac OS Leopard.
The skins feature the classic Aqua and Graphite schemes and the newly introduced Platinum scheme which you can find in the System Preferences and Mail programs in Mac OS X 10.4. They've also included Brushed with over 20 substyles added for good measure. The Apple menu is unfortunately, not an exact copy of the original but it's pretty close. It's basically a stripped down Start Menu that has been made to look like the Apple menu in Mac OS X. In addition, there are also left and right handed titlebar buttons for those that want their PC to look like a Mac but at the same time keep their right handed Windows buttons. The look and feel is remarkably Apple although Windows keeps creeping through especially with it's annoying sounds sometimes to spoil the illusion. If you have any widgets installed, you may also find that they don't show with this installed.

A great skin for those that either can't afford a Mac or those that simply prefer the elegant Mac look and style.

Download Mac OS X Theme 1.3 in Softonic

This app works in a very simple way: enter your Gmail address and password, and it'll automatically fetch all your feeds, as well as your shared and starred items. The interface looks like iTunes a lot, which makes the program seem kind of familiar and easy to use.

ReadAIR works generally fine. I especially liked the way feeds are displayed on the program's interface, keeping the original post's layout at all times and using a very visually appealing text font.

However, the program also has some major flaws: to begin with, I couldn't add any new feeds (the "Add" button simply showed a blank window). Also, the only way to move through feeds is by using the mouse, meaning there's no support for keyboard shortcuts.

ReadAIR provides you with another way to access your Google Reader feeds, though it still needs to improve to become a real alternative.

Download ReadAir 0.1 in Softonic

MPlayer 1.2

It's considered to be a must have free video player. It can play any type of video including 192 video codec and 85 audio coded - like VLC player, but with a nicer interface. It is also supposed to optimize CPU usage and use as few resources as possible. The package contains optimized builds for Pentiums, Athalons and Dual Core processors. You just select the one suitable for you during the installation process.

The package installs both MPlayer and the front-end SMPlayer, which is the same program but with a nicer looking interface. A number of useful features are included: the subtitles option for example, allows you to load subtitle files and link them to a video. You also have many options to deinterlace, denoise and apply filters to improve the video rendering.

I've noticed minor usability issues: when you stop the video for example, the pointer in the status bar should restart from the beginning, whereas with this player it just stays at the point of the film you stopped it, making no difference with the pause function. Also the program doesn't remember the volume of the sound when you close and re-open the application.

MPlayer supports 192 video codec and also video streaming, QuickTime and RealAudio files making it the perfect choice if you don't want to mess around with a different player for each video format.

Download MPlayer 1.2 in Softonic

Vista OS X V3

If you've been disillusioned by Vista and wish that you'd bought a Mac (since that's what Vista is trying to emulate anyway) then you might be impressed by Vista OS X V3.

Vista OS X is a transformation pack for the 32-bit editions of Windows Vista. The installation is very simple and gives you full control over what elements you want to install, change or modify in Vista. These include features such as the look and style of Vista, the folder and Explorer styles and skins for various applications. Often with these programs, there is a concern that it may change fundamental aspects of Windows Vista that can cause conflicts. We can't guarantee this won't be the case for you but the good thing is that the program creates a restoration point during installation so if you do suffer any problems, you can easily roll back. If you prefer, you can install Vista OS X V3 on a partition so that your original installation of Windows is not affected in any way.

This is a very impressive Vista-Mac transformation pack which gives a realistic Mac feel although there's no guarantee that it may not start to cause conflicts within Vista after prolonged use.

Download Vista OS X V3 in Softonic

winLight 0.8

As a recent switcher, I'm slowly discovering all the little wonders of MacOS X and starting to understand why the Apple OS has so many faithful supporters. However things are different at work, where I must still work with a PC on a daily basis. Luckily there are apps that bring a pinch of Mac taste to Windows users.

This is the case of WinLight, a Spotlight clone for Windows that enables you to search for files, folders and apps in a much easier, more comfortable way. WinLight is slightly similar to the original Mac Spotlight tool but still has a long way to go.

To begin with, results are not classified into categories as the original Spotlight. Also, it doesn't show a drop-down menu with results but just completes the word – only if you have written it before - and then opens a window instead, which is not quite as useful.

While WinLight may be a good replacement for the old-fashioned Windows standard search tool, I'm afraid it's not as good as the original Spotlight.

Download winLight 0.8 in Softonic
