FrostWire 5.3.2

FrostWire is an open source Peer to Peer (P2P) application based on the Gnutella network and a popular alternative to the now defunct Limewire.

In fact, FrostWire has more than just a few similarities to Limewire although unlike the latter, it does not carry advertising and there are no annoying pop ups. Just as Limewire was, FrostWire is straightforward and easy to use. A simple search bar, divided by category, makes it a breeze to browse for a file, whether it is a video, image, audio, or program. FrostWire also has a What’s New button to check out what popular files users have recently exchanged.

One particularly handy feature of FrostWire is a special direct connect option. If you know the IP address of one of your friends, type it in the box and FrostWire will browse to that user’s files. This is a quick way of sharing files with someone you know although it would be even better if you could enter the username of a user rather than the IP address.

In terms of speed, much will depend on the speed of your own connection. It definitely helps though if you've correctly opened your router’s ports and whether you’re downloading a popular file or not. To avoid the risk of downloading copyrighted or adult material, FrostWire also allows you to apply content filters. Another handy feature of FrostWire is a built-in media player. Video and audio can be tested using Frostwire’s media player which gives you an immediate preview of your file.

However, one major annoyance with Frostwire is the number of fake files on it. Many songs and files look genuine but are in fact either completely fake or in the worst case scenarios, malicious. You should be very careful when opening files. It should also be noted that FrostWire is basically a stripped-down version of <taglink type="program" country="en" id="21803">Limewire</taglink>, but is a not-for-profit project. The developers claim it will never support Digital Rights Management (DRM) or any type of advertising. However, the demise of Limewire due to legal issues mean that FrostWire may well be targeted in the future for closure.

FrostWire for Mac is a hugely popular alternative for anyone who misses Limewire but there are a lot of fake files and it doesn't quite measure up to the latter in most areas.

Download FrostWire 5.3.2 in Softonic

Firstly, don't be fooled by the name - Lion Cache Cleaner works on OS X from Panther upwards. The developers seem to have a confusing habit of changing the name with every new release of OS X.

It's also much more than just a cache cleaner which makes Lion Cache Cleaner in the running for surely one of the most misleadingly named applications ever! Lion Cache Cleaner is a one stop solution for a range of OS X maintenance needs. It works on both Intel and PPC Macs using Panther or above. It even extends to virus scanning of internet downloads although this can be extremely slow.

What we really liked about Lion Cache Cleaner is that it can repair permissions automatically after software installations - very useful for someone like me that installs and tests a lot of software. As the name suggests, you can obviously flush several caches at once, language localization files and other useless data. I'm always a bit wary of programs that claim to optimize RAM as this is something that can make your system terribly unstable if done badly but you can run Lion Cache Cleaner in Single User Mode to avoid crashing your entire machine in one go.

We also liked the fact that you can instantly see the login items on your Mac which can reveal erroneous entries that may be slowing down your startups. On the downside, Lion Cache Cleaner leaves behind the package receipt and . plist file when uninstalled and the overall interface, while easy to use, is very dated.

Despite the confusing name, rest assured that Lion Cache Cleaner works from Panther upwards and is a lightweight, easy to use and effective way to maintain your system.

Download Lion Cache Cleaner 6.0.8 in Softonic

There's nothing new in Cocktail that you can't do in Terminal but Cocktail makes it so much easier through its GUI. Many of it's functions and tweaks will remain a mystery to basic users though - options such as whether to switch on or switch of journaling and the network options are aimed more at power users.

Nevertheless, for those that want more control over how their dock works, their startup sequence and other OS interface related issues, Cocktail gives you immense control. The Interface options are perhaps the most useful allowing you to select a range of different features such as Finder, Safari and Mail and tweak them to your own liking.

Some users will complain that what Cocktail does for a modest fee, other apps do for nothing but as an all round system maintenance tool, especially for power users, it's one of the best out there.

Download Cocktail 5.1.2 in Softonic

SeaMonkey 2.6.1

Firefox is of course Mozilla's big success story but the Mozilla Foundation do a lot more than web browsers. The unusually named SeaMonkey is a Mozilla product which has lofty ambitions - to be a web browser, advanced email, newsgroup and feed client, IRC chat, and HTML editor in one.

If this sounds a bit much to pull off well you'd be right. SeaMonkey is a bit of an outdated concept nowadays and it's no surprise that it carried on the work that Netscape started many years ago. It's a lot to get right in one go but this latest release sees SeaMonkey finally brought in line with the demands of Internet users today. And you know from the start it can't be that bad - under the hood, SeaMonkey is based on the same Mozilla source code which powers such things as Firefox, Thunderbird, Camino, Sunbird and Miro.

The similarities of SeaMonkey with Firefox are obvious from the start - and with good reason. SeaMonkey 2.0 has been refurbished with a modern version of Firefox based on Firefox 3.5.4 and is now much closer to Firefox as far as user profiles, add-ons, and functionality of user interface elements are concerned. Tabs in SeaMonkey can now be reopened after they have been closed and the way passwords and usernames are handled has been overhauled. To select another part of the suite you want to use, just go to the 'Window' option in the Menu Bar and select either Browser, Mail and Newsgroups, Address Book, IRC Chat and Composer.

There are several other major improvements related to the mail client. Setting up an account is easy and retrieving email using the IMAP (Internet Message Access Protocol) protocol is now faster and mail is synchronized by default by your Mac. And at long last, email accounts, folders, and messages can be viewed in tabs. In terms of looks, SeaMonkey has also been given a much better OS X theme which goes a long way to shaking off it's Windows heritage.

On the downside, some people feel that the new SeaMonkey has moved too far away from it's original Netscape origins in look, functionality and feel. The IRC chat client still looks very basic, techy and intimidating too. Also, it seems there is no basic import function to import passwords from earlier versions of SeaMonkey or even Firefox which is a bit annoying.

SeaMonkey will still probably only appeal to those who have used it from version 1.0, but there's no doubt that this latest release makes it a much more competitive and Mac friendly suite.

Download SeaMonkey 2.6.1 in Softonic

Firefox has always had an outstanding position in the always competitive web browser battles. Firefox 10, though not very different from Firefox 9 in terms of design, brings a bunch of subtle improvements.

The most notable changes in Firefox 10 are bug fixes, better extension management, an auto-hiding forward button, improvements to CSS3 capabilities, antialiasing support for WebGL as well as some other minor additions.

The slight disadvantage of Firefox 10 is that many add-ons won't work from the start until the developers have upgraded them although the beta testing period for version 9 should have given them chance to do so. The interface in Firefox 10 is pretty much the same as Firefox 9, with a minimalist toolbar and hidden buttons.

Firefox 10 isn't a revolution in the development of Firefox, but there are some useful improvements that still make it a decent browser.

Download Mozilla Firefox 10 in Softonic

Many Mac users seek an alternative to OneNote if they've just switched from Windows and Growly Notes is one of the strongest contenders.

Growly Notes lets you capture just about anything all in one place. It's a great tool for organizing research projects, trips, to-do lists, or journals. In addition, its equally competent at creating scrapbooks of random images, web links and video clips.

Like OneNote, the great strength of Growly Notes is that it can contain almost anything, including formatted text, images, movies, audio clips, PDF files, tables, lists, web and file links, and drawings you create in Notes. You can place things anywhere so you don't have to worry about inflexible templates or rigid rules. You can separate ideas and brainstorming sessions into tabs which you can navigate very easily.

It's impressive that Growly Notes offers for free many of the features of a highly polished application like Curio. Growly comes amazingly close to OneNote in many aspects with the bonus of a slick OS X interface of course. However, some of the more advanced features of OneNote - such as integration with OneNote web app and syncing with Outlook aren't possible in Growly Notes.

Growly Notes is an excellent free Mac alternative to OneNote and is perfect for mind-mapping, note-taking and brainstorming.

Download Growly Notes 1.2.5 in Softonic

Having switched from Windows, no such universal cross application alert system existed.

However, I soon grew to use and depend on it until now, I can't imagine OS X without it. Growl is basically an alert tool which can be used by hundreds of applications to inform you that an action has just taken place. So for example, when using Spotify, Growl alerts will let you know when a new track has started with a discreet pop up message in the top right of your screen.

Alternatively, Growl can be used to tell you when a download has been completed, a user has logged onto a messaging client and just about anything that involves notification. Of course, an application has to support Growl in order to use it. Some applications can, however, have Growl support added to them using plug-ins or 'extras' which can be found in a folder in the installer.

Growl alerts are highly customizable. You can choose a range of display styles, select which corner of the screen you want to display alerts, and select how long to leave notifications on the screen among many other things. You can even change the opacity of alerts. All of these settings can be accessed using the Growl preference panel installed in the System Preferences.

Growl is a must-have notification tool for Mac users. The first one is a calendar.
You can browse this calendar and write posts which will be saved at the specific date you write them. It's particularly useful for writers I think, as you might want to prepare a piece for a specific day and after you have written it you can actually concentrate on something else without worrying about remembering when you have to publish an article.

The second exciting tool is a full screen mode which will turn your screen completely black with just your text showing on it. Writing in this mode means that you’re free from all of the distractions your Mac can usually throw at you, helping you maximize your concentration and productivity.
It makes you feel good and even important, I am not sure why but this is true. I guess it's because you can feel you have the space and the power to write all you want without having any interference, not even design foibles, with your writing.
Then when you go back to the normal mode, it will be easy to format your text, add pictures if you need to, or double-check possible mistakes underlined of course with those unforgiving red lines.
When you have finished you can lock your journal as if it were your secret diary.
If you are one of those writers who feels that even the interface of your editor is an element of disturbance with your artistic vein, try this effective editor which will leave you with nothing but your words.

Download MacJournal 6.0.2 in Softonic

The first thing you'll notice about Songbird is its resemblance to the iTunes interface, which means that if you've ever used iTunes you won't have any problem in learning how to use Songbird.

Songbird automatically imports your music files from a selected folder, monitors that folder for future music additions, organizes your music in a handy, easily browsable catalog, is compatible with iTunes and Last.fm libraries, can be controlled from any other app thanks to global hotkeys and also supports Last.fm scrobbling. It also includes album art and a simple equalizer.

Songbird is such a complete tool that's hard to find negative sides to it. The program also allows you to show invisible files, set color labels plus lock and unlock files. For OS X experts, this is not exactly essential but for those unfamiliar with the nuts and bolts behind it, it makes things much easier.
Speed Download 5.3.0

If you consider yourself a power downloader, than my suggestion is to get a proper download manager to handle and sort all those files. Speed Download is a good solution.

Speed Download was embroiled in a little controversy recently with the MacHeist Community, regarding the upgrade from version 4 to 5. We won't delve into this here though and instead will focus simply on the application itself.

Fitted with a customizable interface similar to that of iTunes, Speed Download gives you immediate control over all your downloads. The best way to browse through your content, apart from the search box, is the left side of the interface. You can view your library elements, servers, folders and specific searches. To keep the application running but have it out of the way, simply use the mini-controller.

You can schedule downloads and auto-resume them, both individually or in queue. Speed Download also lets you share files via FTP with full encryption, and includes .Mac/iDisk/WEBDAV connectivity. Downloads are generally faster than in a browser and the really good thing is that you can have them in a separate application, so you can use your browser simply for visiting web sites.

One little issue we have with Speed Download is that it can use up quite a lot of RAM, so make sure you don't go download crazy and start looking for hundreds of files. This is why queuing and organizing downloads is really important.

Speed Download is the perfect application for any download junky, thanks to advanced downloading features and a well designed interface.

Download Speed Download 5.3.0 in Softonic

MacFamilyTree 6.2.4

Creating your family tree offers an interesting insight into your past. MacFamilyTree makes it easy to enter and visualize your family history within a tailored OS X style interface.

MacFamilyTree can even be used to create family reports and create contact information via ID cards for your family. The impressive 3D effects it adds to family trees makes navigating it really slick. Most recently, MacFamilyTree has been updated to allow users to search online for your family history, a service which currently is free to use. You can also publish your family trees and history to the web if you have a MobileMe account.

The main drawback of MacFamilyTree however is the fact that it doesn't have the search power and social interaction aspect that something like say Genes Reunited has. It's also prone to lags and crashes when family information files grow quite big according to some users, meaning that you might have problems managing large family trees.

Overall however, MacFamilyTree makes discovering your family tree a slick and easy experience.

Download MacFamilyTree 6.2.4 in Softonic

One thing I can't help missing from Windows is the amount of decompression tools available.

There are far fewer on Mac, although Pacifist makes up for that as an application that can handle a huge range of compressed packages including .pkg, .dmg, .zip, .tar, .tar.gz, .tar.bz2, .pax, and .xar archives. Most importantly, it gives you full control over which files you want to unzip, which is useful if you need to install just one file out of a package instead of the entire package. The most common usage of Pacifist is to roll-back unsuccessful or problematic updates, especially to QuickTime.

Simply open the package you're having problems with in Pacifist and click on the Verify button. Pacifist then checks to see whether all files are installed correctly and have the right permissions.

Alternatively, Pacifist could be handy if an installer isn't functioning correctly and you need to extract only those files that are essential. It can even open certain archives via HTTP, which is handy in case you want to download only one file from a large .zip archive without downloading the whole file. As a final bonus, Pacifist can also find which installer installed which programs. This is ideal if you've got a program installed that you have no idea how it got there.

There's very little to criticize in Pacifist. It's a superbly versatile and powerful archive tool that may one day be standard in OS X.

Download Pacifist 3.0 in Softonic

EditRocket 4.1.4

If you are a programmer or developer, editing is second nature but you need to make sure you have the right tools for the job with an editor like EditRocket.

Source code-focused users are going to appreciate EditRocket's code builders and easy-access elements such as macros, plug-ins and inserts. They'll also like the EditRocket web browser preview feature, as well as more standard options such as syntax checking and auto-complete. Programmers and other users will be happy to find that EditRocket has a great selection of text manipulation tools, a fully-customizable interface and file explorer. EditRocket isn't particularly pretty, but it is multifunctional and easy to use.

One of EditRocket's nicest features is what the program calls Sidekicks - little pop-out windows that provide access to the elements you are most likely to need when working, depending on which language you are using. The overall EditRocket experience is one of total comfort - it provides a text editor that has just as many, if not more, handy tools as both its peers and other, non-programming tools like Word.

However, Mac users should note that EditRocket is a cross-platform Java editor that doesn't fit OS X like a glove. Many won't like the fact that it seems like it was designed with Windows in mind and the Java often makes it slow.

Overall, EditRocket is a comfortable tool for stress-free editing and programming although may be better on Windows than Macs.

Download EditRocket 4.1.4 in Softonic

uTorrent 1.5.13

I've been using uTorrent on Windows for years now and so the arrival of uTorrent on the Mac was something that many users, myself included, had long been waiting for.

The reason I've relied on uTorrent for so long is because it's lightweight, extremely easy to use, very fast, requires no configuration and generally just makes downloading torrents a piece of cake. Fortunately, the Mac version does not disappoint with the added addition of course that it has a much better looking Mac OS style interface. The main difference you'll notice is that uTorrent for Mac is slightly stripped down compared to the Windows version.

For example, down the left hand side of uTorrent you have all the same menus that you have in Windows that allow you to select exactly what you see in the uTorrent window. You can choose to view only those downloads that have completed, those that are currently downloading, those that are active and finally those that are inactive. Of course, you can also choose to view all of these at the same time too. However, along the top of the interface, some of the controls that you find in Windows have been removed such as the button for RSS downloads, the create your own torrent wizard button and a preferences button. Preferences can be accessed via the menu bar although there is no RSS downloader or create your own torrent wizard unfortunately.

Everything else is the same as you get in the uTorrent 's Windows version including a detailed stats windows giving you details of your download which you can toggle on and off via the info symbol on the top right of the interface. You'll also find the search box here which it has to be said, is the one weak point of uTorrent. Rather than giving you torrent results that you can download, it simply takes you straight to a Google search results page. If this search resulted in a list of torrent files you could download, or linked to a torrent site, it would be far more useful.

Otherwise, the preferences dialog offers the same controls as in Windows with options to limit the bandwidth uTorrent uses, network settings and BitTorrent settings. Most importantly, downloads are lightening quick (if you have plenty of seeds for your file) although of course, this will also depend on how fast your internet connection is. It takes little more than a few seconds for uTorrent to start finding seeds and get on with downloading your files. Finally, the uTorrent website offers you several different skins to choose from, an extensive FAQ and a full guide to using uTorrent for beginners (not that you need one because simplicity is uTorrent's greatest asset.)

One other drawback is that there is no way to add or remove torrent components once it has started.

If you've used uTorrent in Windows, you won't be disappointed by uTorrent for Mac. If you've never used it, then give it a go and you may never go back to your old torrent client again.

Download uTorrent 1.5.13 in Softonic

TinkerTool 4.71

TinkerTool is one of the best tools around for tweaking and changing the preferences on your Mac.

The reason for this is that TinkerTool assumes no prior expert knowledge providing you with a simple interface from which to modify a number of Mac settings such as the Dock, fonts and Safari. Simply check or uncheck the options you wish to keep or not from the different menus. In the Dock for example, you can choose to show system files and animation effects when opening. Just pressing the 'Relaunch' button at the bottom will bring changes into effect. In this latest version, you can also block the Expose feature in the Dock on Snow Leopard.

Many of the features you will find in TinkerTool are however duplicated in free applications such as Onyx but there's no doubt that this app does go a bit deeper and offers more at the end of the day. For example, the uninstaller is useful because it removes associated files for all users on a system whereas free removal tools such as AppDelete only usually remove files for the logged-on user.

Snow Leopard users are at a slight advantage because TinkerTool will recognize what version of Mac you have and show only the preferences that your version supports which are considerably more in Snow Leopard than Leopard for example. Be aware though that changing too many settings can have all sorts of adverse effects on your Mac. Fortunately, TinkerTool includes a 'reset' button on the right of the interface to return to default settings.

The only thing that some existing users may complain about is the fact that no discount is offered for upgrades but for the modest price the developer asks for such a great app, it's a small price pay.

TinkerTool is a powerful and well designed application which will give you far greater control over the look and functionality of OS X.

Download TinkerTool 4.71 in Softonic

One of the strongest aspects of the Mac is the range and elegance of its fonts but these often stay hidden away deep inside OS X until you need them.

Fontcase is a font management application that provides an elegant management system so that your fonts get the same exposure and treatment as anything else stored on your system, such as multimedia files. Its developer has labeled it as 'iTunes for fonts' and while that may be stretching it, you can see where they're coming from.

Of course, you can use FontExplorer on the Mac but Fontcase provides an altogether richer and more spectacular management experience. At the beginning, you're prompted to import all of your fonts which takes quite a while and there's a lot of hanging around while it processes them all. When you're done however, you can start browsing although again. The program works surprisingly slowly for what is basically a font manager. You can search fonts via a search box in the top-right of the interface and scroll through your fonts a little bit like you would do with photos in Picasa. Searching is helped by the fact that you can tag fonts.

You may experience some stability issues, however. On importing the fonts, Fontcase completely froze for me, which was rather annoying as the whole process had taken a good 5 minutes to begin with.

Fontcase is a powerful and elegant app but it needs to be a lot quicker and stable before I'd be persuaded to use it over FontExplorer.

Download Fontcase 2.0.3 in Softonic
