Sonic & All-Stars Racing Transformed

Sonic & All-Stars Racing Transformed is Sega's answer to Mario Kart, and now available for PC and Mac. More than a kart-clone, it's an excellent racing game, with fantastic looking tracks and a huge range of Sega characters driving alongside some cameo appearances.

This is a game that achieves being both a really fun and deep karting game, and possibly the best monument to Sega's rich gaming history. As well as the big range of characters, the beautiful tracks exist in stunning recreations of Sega worlds gone by. As well as Sonic inspired environments, there's Monkey Ball, Afterburner, Shinobi and more.

Races themselves are great fun. Tracks changes during races, allowing for Sonic & All-Stars Racing Transformed's cars to transform into boats or planes. Handling is what it should be, with powerslides playing a big part in proceedings. Boats face big waves, while flying offers you plenty of freedom. Pickups are well balanced, although just like Mario Kart, sometimes you'll feel victimized by the computer players. All the tracks are hugely imaginative and really engaging, and they are well designed as well as dramatic.

The single player mode has plenty of variety, with modes like traffic attack and drifting challenges integrated into the campaign, and there's competitive multiplayer too. Like developer SUMO’s earlier OutRun 2 SP, you keep getting XP and unlockables even when you’re not winning. It’s not easy in the fastest class, though, and you’ll really have to learn the tracks to win.

Sonic & All-Stars Racing Transformed is a great karting game. Anyone can enjoy playing it, but if you've grown up with Sega games, the fantastic nostalgia is unmissable.

Download Sonic & All-Stars Racing Transformed in Softonic

There are lots of amusing power-ups to pick up and chuck at your opponents along the way, and the computer-controlled drivers are certainly not afraid to use them, so you need to be on your toes if you want to get anywhere in SuperTuxKart.

There are three different game modes to test you, namely: Time Trial, Quick Race and Grand Prix. Unfortunately, there's no equivilent of Mario Kart's Battle Mode, which is still my favourite part of the game.
Also, as the game is still in development, there are a few glitches such as the fact that some of the levels take a long time to load.
However, anyone who enjoyed playing Mario Kart will find this an amusing diversion.

Download SuperTuxKart 0.8 in Softonic

Need for Speed: Most Wanted

Need for Speed: Most Wanted is developer Criterion's second game for the long running series. It brings together all their arcade racing expertise in an excellent open world racing playground.

Need for Speed: Most Wanted puts you in the county of Fairhaven. It feels like a hybrid of Critereon's previous open worlds of <taglink type="program" country="en" id="78552">Burnout Paradise</taglink> and <taglink type="program" country="en" id="326855">NFS Hot Pursuit</taglink>. There are open highways, with big, sweeping curves and off road shortcuts. The city is a fantastic place to weave through traffic, and has some great playground areas that really come into their own in multiplayer games.

The single player campaign sees you trying to become the 'Most Wanted' driver in Fairhaven. There are ten drivers to beat. You earn your right to challenge them by completing the many races and challenges available to you. Each vehicle has it's own races, and you find the cars parked around the city.

The most wanted races are fantastic. They are long and really exciting, with great routes and plenty of police interference. If you do manage to win a race against one of these rivals, you then have to chase them down, and take them out to win their place in the top ten and their car! These are some of the most intense and fun arcade races you will play, and are one of Need for Speed Most Wanted's crowning achievements.

The cars all feel different, but share the excellent arcade handling that we're used to from Criterion. Drifting comes easily, and is as precise as Mario Kart, while executing handbrake turns is a breeze. You'll get customization options as you win events, giving you tire options, better chassis, Nitro and more. All of these can be applied from the excellent Easydrive menus, which you access while on the road, so gameplay is seemless.

Mutliplayer drops you into Fairhaven with a group of other racers. You are given a meet up point, and have to drive there. Once you're all together, you are given a task: this could be a race or a cooperative mission, like jump or drift a certain distance as a group. It's fast, fluid and loads of fun.

Dropping in and out of multiplayer is simple, using the new 'Easydrive' menu system, and is an example for other games of how it should be done.

Combining Criterion's greatest hits in one game does mean some compromises. The most notable for Burnout fans is that the wonderful car-crushing crashes have gone. You do see car damage on these licensed cars, but it simply doesn't compare with the carnage that Burnout Paradise perfected.

You can never please everyone, but Need for Speed Most Wanted almost manages it. Fairhaven is an excellent, and beautiful racing playground, the cars a great to drive, and most importantly the racing is intense and exciting.

Download Need for Speed: Most Wanted in Softonic

Dirchie Kart is a high-speed racing game for Windows PC users.

If you're a fan of games like Mario Kart XP or Mario Kart 360, Dirchie Kart is of a similar nature and spirit. It's a remix of 16-bit kart racing games of days past that still provides fun for racing kart fans of all ages.

There are eight different cars and characters you can opt to race with in Dirchie Kart. Each car has its own quirks and peculiarities, which make the game more unique and fun. Before each game, you can also choose up to three weapons to use against your opponents during the race.

There are three types of competitions to race in with Dirchie Kart: Economy, Grand Prix and Retro Remix. The Grand Prix option actually plays real Formula 1 circuits, which will be a plus for fans of that type of racing.

Unfortunately, Dirchie Kart's graphics really aren't all that impressive. Some users might be turned off by their simplicity. It's the circuits and variety of cars to choose from that are Dirchie Kart's strong suits though, and in those areas the game definitely doesn't disappoint.

If you can get past unimpressive graphics, Dirchie Kart provides tons of racing fun for players of all ages.

Download Dirchie Kart Beta in Softonic

If you were a big fan of the SNES version of Super Mario then Super Mario World Deluxe is a delightful remake.

Along with Super Mario 3: Mario Forever, it's considered by fans to be one of the best Super Mario remakes around. The slight difference is that they makers of Super Mario World Deluxe haven't just cloned the Mario character - they've given this one a personality all of his own.

Super Mario World Deluxe follows the same type of gameplay and adventures as the original Super Mario series although it's clearly not as polished as the original and looks and plays a bit amateur in places. In addition, unlike Super Mario 3: Mario Forever, the controls are more like the original, so it's easier to get used to.

However, Super Mario World Deluxe's nowhere near as complete as the former or original. For example, there are only 5 levels to choose from (compared to 50 in Super Mario 3: Mario Forever) and the graphics aren't quite as faithful to the original.

Super Mario World Deluxe is still a great remake of the classic Super Mario series on the SNES.

Download Super Mario World Deluxe 1.0 in Softonic

Super Laser Racer is a mix between a top down racing game and Geometry Wars. It takes Super-Sprint like racing, and adds shiny neon retro graphics and weapons.

There are two game modes, quick race and tournament. Choose from 12 different ships to race, all with different performance stats, and designs. Half of them need to be unlocked by playing through the tournaments. There are three difficulty levels, and 12 tracks to master. The trick with these games is learning racing lines, which allow you to really fly round the courses.

On each track there are weapons scattered around, á la Mario Kart, plus turbo strips to give you a speed boost. There are also shield recharge points, that work like pit stops. You can be destroyed in the game, so keeping an eye on your damage and whether you should pit or not is important. If you need more tracks, there's an editor included so you can design your own.

Super Laser Racer is a fun game to play for a few minutes here and there. It looks cool, and racing can be frantic and dynamic. The difficulty levels are a bit unbalanced - easy is very easy, while normal is a lot harder. There are online leaderboards, which is cool, but no multiplayer.

Super Laser Racer is a fun futuristic arcade racing game that is a great way to fill a spare ten minutes.

Download Super Laser Racer 1.0 in Softonic

As an online game, you may have to download extra patches but it doesn't take long.

Kart n' Crazy definitely met our expectations – and believe me, as a faithful Mario Kart fan, they were high. The game is very funny, features different playing modes to appeal different kinds of gamers and includes also an addictive social component which lets you meet other players and chat with them while speeding along the circuit's bends.

There are two game modes: Speed and Arcade. The first one challenges players to be the fastest on track, while in the second one the aim is to make other players fail on their way to the finishing line by using different weapons you can pick up and use along the race. These weapons are also similar to the ones you find in Mario Kart: the lightning bolt, the turtle, the star that makes you go faster (no bananas though).

Personally, I found the Arcade mode to be much more exciting. I had loads of fun racing and trying to throw other players off the track at the same time. After each race, depending on your position on the final ranking, you're awarded experience points which you can later on use to customize your kart and buy new apparel for your driver.

Now, is there any drawback to this game? Not really. Except the odd connectivity issue (which is reasonable bearing in mind this is the first public release) Kart n' Crazy is an excellent racing game for all ages.

If you like Mario Kart or just kart racing games, you'll love Kart n' Crazy: an online karting game where you can compete against players worldwide to be the fastest pilot in the world – even if you have to kick your competitors off the road!

Download Kart n' Crazy in Softonic

Having these predecessors, I was looking forward to installing and testing this game, but sadly Come on baby fell way too short of what we expected it to be.

First of all, the game has some graphical issues, especially when rendering fonts: small sized text can hardly be read at all. Although this doesn't interfere with gameplay, it does make it very difficult when you're doing the tutorial levels or when you need to follow certain instructions.

That said, Come on baby shows off a fun, colorful design both in characters and scenarios, only that I personally found them a bit childish. Cars –well, actually baby walkers- are easy to manage and respond very well to controls. Besides practicing and racing on your own, you can compete against other players worldwide in online races, but unfortunately chat rooms were empty and we couldn't find appropriate competitor.

In any case, bear in mind that Come on Baby is still at beta stage in development, so hopefully the author will put some effort in solving these issues and make the whole game experience a lot better.

Download Come on Baby 1.01 E in Softonic

The game does have realistic graphics, in the sense that it doesn't use cartoon-style cars like, let's say, Mario Kart. But they're not certainly what I would call "real" graphics: crashes don't have any effect on your vehicle and the cars' designs don't display a high level of detail.

Despite these minor flaws, Real Race is a fun game. There's a wide variety of cars and tracks to choose from, the majority of which are locked at the beginning of the game. It's also very easy to play, in fact, sometimes it feels it's just too easy.

Besides trying to win the race, the bonus items spread along the track spice it up a bit.
