Introduction

PhotoFiltre is a relatively small application and unlike Photoshop, will install and launch very quickly. The interface, loaded with all the features and options, can be confusing at first glance but you'll soon get used to it. The right side is composed of the shape and drawing tools and an optimizable color palette. The top bar has all the essential image editing and modification options. PhotoFiltre sadly doesn't let you customize the interface and choose your favorite tools.

Features

Among all the image modification tools, of particular usefulness is the quick contrast/hue and saturation buttons because you can check out the effects and immediately and easily correct the image if you're not satisfied with its quality. If you trust PhotoFiltre, you can also let it adjust these parameters automatically.

Like any self-respecting image editing application, PhotoFiltre includes the most widely used filters to transform your image, but if you need to make really significant changes, you'll find yourself limited. Furthermore, unlike Photoshop, PhotoFiltre doesn't include layers, making it more challenging to work on different elements of the image separately.

Like the excellent free image viewer Irfanview, PhotoFiltre covers the majority of image formats and can batch process and convert images rapidly. PhotoFiltre has five different zoom options yet they seem to be more or less similar. The magnifier is probably less precise than the drop down percentage pane, and the auto zoom adjusts the image’s size according to PhotoFiltre's window size.

The image explorer is located at the bottom of the screen, and if you set it according to your image file you'll be able to quickly preview all your pictures. However, if you work with multiple image files, it can quickly become confusing, as you’ll have to open up an explorer tree pane every time to look for your pictures.

Large plus signs will allow you to quickly insert new sections and pages on the fly. As with other Office products, Microsoft OneNote 2013 relies on use of the tool bar or corresponding hotkeys. You can also right click to bring up a convenient editing menu.

Quality

Microsoft OneNote 2013’s appearance is in line with other Microsoft Modern programs. The layout is very clean without any clutter. The program generally functions quickly, even when embedding or attaching large video files. Even if you become disconnected from your Microsoft account you can still work on a document and save it for later. When a session is restored you will be able to once again directly share with others or save to cloud storage.

Conclusion

Looking just like it fits into the Windows 8 Metro interface, Fresh Paint is an aesthetically pleasing painting app that's easy enough for children to use, but provides enough features to please older users.

One of the things that makes Fresh Paint so unique is just how realistic the painting experience is. The paint in Fresh Paint actually acts like it would if you had a palette and easel in your own home. You can blend and mix colors to get specific shades of your choosing, plus choose from a lot of different editing options to ensure your idea is properly translated onto your digital canvas.

Unfortunately, Fresh Paint has some stability issues, where it sometimes crashed upon startup. This can really add frustration to an otherwise pretty graphically amazing experience. Some basic editing tools are also missing, which will hopefully be updated in the next version of the app.

Apart from occasional crashes, Fresh Paint is a welcome addition to the Windows 8 Metro family of apps, and provides users with a realistic painting experience.

If you do a lot of web tutorials or reviews (like we do), then a screen capture program is a must. By default, Windows requires you to hit print screen and paste the image into an editor like Microsoft Paint or Adobe Photoshop. Programs like SnapCrab and Snagit provide a more elegant solution with powerful capturing tools.

SnapCrab for Windows has the ability to snap the entire screen, a single program, or a single window. It also allows you to take captures with transparent or colored backgrounds. SnapCrab for Windows includes many different customization options, like defining your own hot keys and modifying how the program takes snapshots. Another feature we really enjoyed was SnapCrab for Windows' ability to give us HTML color codes of anything on the screen.

Unfortunately, SnapCrab for Windows doesn't include an editor so the captures you take will have to be thrown into a secondary app for modification. However, sharing captures is easy as it integrates with Facebook, Twitter, and Evernote for quick sharing within the app.

While SnapCrab for Windows is not nearly as easy to use as Snagit, it is certainly the right price (free!) and offers a much more elegant screen capturing experience than Window's default method.

This tool lets you create an image from scratch or edit one of your images in an intuitive interface. The program is easy enough to use like any other Paint-like application, but also has some powerful features that you normally don't find in other free graphic editors.

If you need something more powerful than Microsoft Paint but not as complex as Photoshop, Paint.NET is what you're looking for.

This nicely designed image editor features the simple interface everyone loves to have in applications, but at the same time offers a surprisingly wide array of tools and options you would only expect to find in large graphic suites.

Paint.NET lets you work on several images simultaneously, has support for layers, keeps an action history that lets you undo any changes, and includes a variety of drawing tools (brushes, geometrical shapes). You'll also find several special filters and effects that can turn your image into an oil painting or a pencil drawing in just one click.

That said, don't expect Paint.NET to be some kind of free Photoshop alternative. If you use the Adobe app to work on your images, you'll surely miss many tools in Paint.NET. For everyone else though, this is a perfect tool for daily simple image editing.

Paint.NET sits somewhere between a basic editor and a complex graphic suite, featuring a nicely designed interface and a bunch of handy tools for quick photo optimization and retouching.

Don’t be fooled by mtPaint's basic appearance. In fact, this is an excellent graphic editor that offers much more than a simple Paint replacement.

mtPaint enables you to both open images in several popular formats and create your own drawings and graphic compositions from scratch. Regarding the latter, it seems that mtPaint is mainly focused on pixel art, as it allows you to draw with high precision thanks to a very powerful zoom tool. Drawing tools, in any case, may not be the strength of this program – my personal opinion is that it should include more of them.

On the upside, mPaint really stands out as a graphic editor with which you can perform many daily tasks. It's simple in design and usage, but at the same time it includes advanced features such as layer support, filters, special effects and more. Of course, this is no equivalent to Photoshop but it will work fine for most of your graphic needs.

Despite its basic appearance and simplicity of use, mtPaint is certainly a great alternative to the standard Microsoft Paint, featuring advanced functions and tools.

This app – which doesn’t have a save or undo function – is basically a gussied-up version of Paint.
There’s a blank canvas, a selection of colors and paintbrush widths and a variety of brightly-colored stamps.

As far as options go, Simple Paint just allows you to erase the whole canvas or to fill it with a solid color.
The different paintbrushes don’t have any special effects, but with a bit of practice you – or your child – should be able to produce a passable drawing.

The Simple Paint stamps are brightly colored and come in a selection that includes flowers, animals and figures. You can apply them simply by clicking on the stamp you want to use and then the canvas, but you can’t modify size or move stamps once they have been positioned.

Simple Paint makes no claims to be an advanced app, but it really is very, very basic. Any child’s app will allow them to get to grips with the mouse, and as painting and drawing apps go, there are much better ones available, such as Tux Paint. There’s ultimately nothing wrong with Simple Paint, but you can do much better.

Simple Paint is functional, but is really too simple to deserve a better score.
