Unlike the 2010 version, images will no longer simply be dumped on the canvas. Instead you can easily drag and drop images between the scratch and canvas, allowing you better control of your final publication.

Quality

The layout is clean and avoids any unused space or clutter. The program generally functions quickly, even when you add in many large and detailed images. You can still edit clip art from Office.com and other sites that you have already downloaded even if you become disconnected from the web. When you are connected your work will automatically be saved to cloud storage.

Installation issues

Installation of Microsoft Office 2013 can be a bit of a pain on Windows 7. The Office 2013 preview downloads as an image file, which will need to be burned to a disc or you'll need a drive virtualization tool like Daemon Tools to create and mount the image. Windows 8 users will not have to worry about this as the operating system includes a disc virtualization tool.

Compatibility concerns

Microsoft Office 2013 creates a nice ecosystem for those already using their office suite but it may not be enough to woo users from other services or applications that are free. Microsoft also announced that Microsoft Office 2013 will only be compatible with Windows 7 and Windows 8. XP and Vista users will be left out in the cold.

Conclusion

While Microsoft Office 2013 received some nice updates, there was nothing revolutionary that was announced. Microsoft played the catch-up game with Microsoft Office 2013, giving its office suite many features its competitors like Google Drive and Apple Mail have had for a while.

PhotoFiltre is a relatively small application and unlike Photoshop, will install and launch very quickly. The interface, loaded with all the features and options, can be confusing at first glance but you'll soon get used to it. The right side is composed of the shape and drawing tools and an optimizable color palette. The top bar has all the essential image editing and modification options. PhotoFiltre sadly doesn't let you customize the interface and choose your favorite tools.

Features

Among all the image modification tools, of particular usefulness is the quick contrast/hue and saturation buttons because you can check out the effects and immediately and easily correct the image if you're not satisfied with its quality. If you trust PhotoFiltre, you can also let it adjust these parameters automatically.

Like any self-respecting image editing application, PhotoFiltre includes the most widely used filters to transform your image, but if you need to make really significant changes, you'll find yourself limited. Furthermore, unlike Photoshop, PhotoFiltre doesn't include layers, making it more challenging to work on different elements of the image separately.

Like the excellent free image viewer Irfanview, PhotoFiltre covers the majority of image formats and can batch process and convert images rapidly. PhotoFiltre has five different zoom options yet they seem to be more or less similar. The magnifier is probably less precise than the drop down percentage pane, and the auto zoom adjusts the image’s size according to PhotoFiltre's window size.

The image explorer is located at the bottom of the screen, and if you set it according to your image file you'll be able to quickly preview all your pictures. However, if you work with multiple image files, it can quickly become confusing, as you’ll have to open up an explorer tree pane every time to look for your pictures.

If you're tired of Microsoft Outlook, or just want something new from your desktop email client, you could give Postbox a whirl. At the moment it's in Beta, but it works well and has some interesting features.

Postbox is based on Thunderbird, and this is visually obvious the moment you run the program. Installation and setup is easy, and as you'd expect you can set up multiple email accounts. There is an excellent search engine which requires your inbox to be indexed for rapid results. If you have thousands of emails, the first indexing might take a little while, but after that it's not something you'll notice.

One unusual feature in Postbox is the tabs. There are contacts, images and attachments tags. The images tag, for example, will show you all the images from your email, and this works for contacts and attachments too. These can then easily be accessed and added when composing email, which turns your inbox into a useful active database. They are also fully search-able, so finding that picture of the cute kitten that so and so sent you becomes much easier.

Highlighting any text and right clicking gives you a range of useful tools, from Google and Amazon searches to listing on social media sites. The former is useful, but the latter feels tacked on and not fully implemented yet. You can, for example, post highlighted text to Twitter and Facebook (as a status update), if you allow Postbox to login to those services. However, these are currently very basic, and unlike some social media clients, there is no way to add your Facebook news feeds etc. You can also add RSS feeds, although as a reader Postbox is still a little basic.

While a little beta-rough around the edges, Postbox is still a very able email client with some promising new features.

Photoscape includes just about everything you need to view, optimize, edit, print and have fun with your photos. In fact, it's so complete that many would call it a free Photoshop alternative. Sure, it's not quite up to the level of Photoshop, but it's truly a great alternative to Adobe's big shot - and it makes photo editing a lot more fun!

Windows 8 comes with plenty of user customizations out of the box but for some odd reason, users couldn't change the background of the new "start" menu to anything other than what Microsoft has included. Decor8 changes that by allows users to easily select Microsoft's pictures or browse for other pictures on your computer.

Decor8 works well and has a beautifully simple interface. If you've used Windows 8's settings applications, you'll feel right at home. The sections in Decor8 are appropriately labeled and easy to understand. There are tons so customizations like blur, fade, color, and contrast. You can even set your desktop background to be the background of the tile interface.

Windows 8 offers tons of user customization but the included backgrounds can become boring very quickly. Chameleon for Windows 8 keeps your lock screen background interesting by cycling through new photos at a set interval. You can set it to change anywhere between 15 minutes and two days. Chameleon for Windows 8 provides a great way to be greeted with a different, interesting photo every time you log in.

Beyond setting lock screen backgrounds, Chameleon for Windows 8 doesn't really do much else. There's no way to change the background image for the Windows 8 start menu. You'll be stuck with the default themes that Microsoft included.

While the quality of the photography in Chameleon for Windows 8 is great, the resolution left much to be desired. Photos loaded quickly but that's because they were compressed. Pictures look fuzzy and weren't displayed at the native resolution of our monitors. We wish that Chameleon for Windows 8 had a way to automatically download backgrounds at the native resolution of the screen.

Overall, Chameleon for Windows 8 provides a fun way to get fresh, interesting backgrounds for your lock screen but leaves much to be desired for the quality of the photographs.

If you think that Microsoft Outlook 2013 would be getting some dramatic new features and improvements like the rest of the applications in the Office 2013 suite, you'd be wrong. For the most part, Microsoft Outlook 2013 remains much the same as the 2010 version. Here's what did change:

The entire app has a flattened look, which goes with the Windows 8 design language. The whole application is monochromatic, featuring lots of white and gray with the occasional blue accents. To me, this color scheme makes it hard to differentiate specific elements of the interface. There are no more icons and everything is text heavy. At the bottom, you'll find sections for mail, calendar, people, tasks and more. Gone are the buttons and icons, giving way to a minimalist text look.

There is a touch mode in Microsoft Outlook 2013, which brings up the same menus that it does in the other apps in Office 2013. There is a bar with frequently-used commands like reply, delete, move, flag and mark. This is great and gives Microsoft Outlook 2013 a good touch experience.

You can now pinch to zoom in the calendar to switch between day, week, and month views. If you are in any other section of Microsoft Outlook 2013 besides the calendar, you can now hover over the calendar section to bring up a pop up of the calendar and your tasks for the day. The calendar will also show weather information of your locale.

Microsoft Lync is still fully integrated into Microsoft Outlook 2013 so you can view a colleague's status and start an audio or video call right from within Microsoft Outlook 2013.

While the mail view is a bit difficult to read because of the monochromatic color scheme, Microsoft Outlook 2013's people view is much improved. Contacts will now pull in information from online sources like Facebook and Linkedin if you've tied these services with your Microsoft Account.

Microsoft Outlook 2013 will combine duplicate contacts, creating one contact card with consolidated information. If your contact has a picture, the picture will show up as a thumbnail next to the contact. It's strange that Microsoft didn't include this in the mail view of Microsoft Outlook 2013, which would help visually differentiate between different emails.

Even more baffling is the lack of threaded messages in Microsoft Outlook 2013. You'll still have to hunt for previous emails from a conversation. Oddly enough, Microsoft's own Mail app in Windows 8 and Windows RT features threaded messaging.

Another annoying change is Microsoft Outlook 2013's notifications. There's no way to dismiss them all in bulk so you'll be closing tons of alerts if Microsoft Outlook 2013 comes back online. Microsoft also got rid of the ability to act on an email from the notification, which was a very useful feature.

If you didn't like Outlook 2010, Microsoft Outlook 2013 won't win you over. While there are some useful new features, its bland interface and missing features make Office 2013 feel like an antiquated email client.

If you didn't like the ribbon interface that was introduced in Office 2007, then you're not going to like Word 2013. The ribbon interface is back but has been improved on. Menu items have been moved around to make the most commonly-used features more easily accessible. The menu items in the ribbon have received aesthetic updates to make them more easily distinguishable from one another.

There is also a 'Touch Mode,' making Word 2013 much more touch-friendly than previous versions. This mode is only available if you have a touch screen enabled computer. Buttons will become bigger, making it easier to select items.

The welcome screen has been redesigned to be more useful. You can see your recently-opened documents as well as a bunch of new templates. There is also a search box at the top where you can search for more templates online. This is extremely handy since Word 2013 doesn't include every type of format out of the box.

Inserting pictures is much easier now as Word 2013 can pull in photos from your Flickr, Facebook, and SkyDrive accounts. Word 2013 also allows you to search for pictures under the Creative Commons license with Bing. There are also new guides to make placing and sizing images much easier within Word 2013.

PDF support is also much improved in Word 2013. PDFs will now open in Word as if they were Word documents. You can convert Word documents to PDF, which will retain the formatting you've done. Converting and opening PDFs in Word 2013 happen quickly.

New for Word 2013 is the ability to download apps. Microsoft has an Office apps store where you can download and install different productivity tools like dictionaries. While some apps are useful, they do take up screen space and don't work well with multiple documents on one screen.

Collaboration has also gotten easier with Word 2013. You can still track changes but if you have an Office 365 account, comments can be synced to everyone's document so everyone collaborating on the document will have access to the most recent version. Comments can be marked as done and will be grayed out, making it less distracting.

If you're happy with your current word processor, there may not be enough new features to make upgrading to Word 2013 compelling. Still, Word 2013 offers incremental updates and features that make it the best version of the word processcor yet.

Excel has always been an immensely powerful application, if you know how to use it. Microsoft specifically targeted ease of use for Excel 2013. When users input data, Excel 2013 will analyze the type of data it is and will give suggestions about the best way to present the data. If the data is comprehensive enough, it will even analyze it and present an option to make a PivotTable automatically.

There is also a new feature called Flash Fill, which will help put badly formatted data into something comprehensible. Data will be sorted into the appropriate columns for you. This takes so much work out of manually organizing your data that Flash Fill may be the killer feature for those deciding whether to upgrade to Excel 2013.

One big improvement in Excel 2013 is how organic it feels. There are little, quick animations that mimic those found in Windows Phone 8, helping to make the program feel less clinical. The animations aren't distracting and help guide your focus to what Excel is currently doing.

The ribbon interface stays but has been tweaked to be more usable. Icons are different colors and grouped nicely. There is a new option in Excel 2013 to pull in pictures from the web from services that you've linked to your Microsoft account. Setting up Excel 2013 is automatic as it'll pull information from your account.

While Excel 2013 still has an intimidating amount of features, it has become smarter, making it easier to work with data. Microsoft has done an outstanding job with Excel 2013 and anyone who uses Excel on a daily basis should upgrade.

I’ve always liked to create posters and picture collage with my photos, to make greetings cards, or simply to display thematic pictures in a funny way, but doing this with Photoshop can be a rather difficult and time consuming activity.

Try the wizard the first time, to get an idea of what the program can do and how your poster can look.
