Since the introduction of the iPhone into popular culture, it seems today that if you haven't got a decent music player on your mobile, you're a bit of a dork.

All this, my friends, before you've even opened the 'Player Options' menu. Once you've done so, you can tinker with settings from crossfading effects to sleep timers.

For me this is, without question, the most fully-featured audio player for Windows Mobile. I would have given it five stars were it not for the fact it lacks an adequate Help section, something, I think is needed in an app of this magnitude.

Nevertheless, if you want to turn your Pocket PC into a all-singing, all-dancing MP3 player, I can't recommend PocketMusic highly enough.

It sounds impressive but Pocket DVD Wizard can reduce 4 DVD's to just 512MB in size without losing a great deal of quality.

This is great news if you're going away fro an extended period of time and want your favourite movies with you. The program works with both standard Pocket PCs and high resolution 640x480 VGA Pocket PCs. It allows you to select the image quality that you are satisfied with and watch the converted video in full screen mode without "letterbox" style black bars above and below the picture. The developers claim that it also works with Windows based Portable Media Center players, such as the Creative Labs Zen PMC or the iRiver PMP-120. This includes Windows based Smartphones such as the iJam and Motorola MPX handsets. Apart form the impressive compression ratios, what strikes you immediately is the ease of use of this program. There's very few clicks required to compress a DVD and it works pretty quickly compared to similar efforts. The fact that it supports to many output devices also distinguishes it from the rest - it can output to anything from a Pocket PC to an iPod or PSP. I also like the fact that it allows you to highly customise the ripping process, if you choose to, so that you can remove unnecessary files such as subtitles and extras.

There's not much to fault with Pocket DVD Wizard - if you like your movies on the go and have multiple devices, then you should look no further.

Nevertheless, if you want to turn your Pocket PC into a all-singing, all-dancing MP3 player, I can't recommend PocketMusic highly enough.

Having heard lots of juicy gossip and seen pictures of the new Windows Mobile 7 OS, I'm itching to have a play with it. Unfortunately for me (and everyone else) it's not due out until 2009. Until then, why not give your OS an overhaul by revamping the interface?

Poorlyduck's Vista Suit allows you to skin your Windows Mobile operating system to make it look like its bigger brother, Vista. The customisations come in the form of a Zip file with a series of folders that contain new skins for different areas of the OS. The enhancements include a Vista Action screen, Commanger, Calculator, Audio manager, Cube, Today theme, and more.

Installing everything onto your device takes a while and is a little complicated because you need to make sure that the files and folders are copied into the correct directories in Windows Mobile. There are text files with instructions inside each of the enhancement folders though, and the details are pretty clear.

Once you've got everything installed at setup the new skins are pretty impressive and while they don't replicate Vista exactly, they certainly provide a flavour of the latest Windows desktop OS. Particular favourites of mine are the dialer, which adorns your on-screen keypad with shiny Vistaness; the Vista Audio Manager, which makes it much easier to organise your music; and the gorgeous Windows Media Player skin.

If you've got the patience and know-how to configure it, Poorlyduck Vista Suit is the perfect way to make your Pocket PC look like a new desktop PC!

Let's face it, it's cool, we all want one and if you say they're rubbish then you're just being jealous. I'm talking about the iPhone/iPod Touch, of course - a revolutionary product that has quickly become the most sought-after gizmo on the planet.

Obviously we don't all have the money to splash out on a luxury like this as we have mouths to feed or nicotine habits to keep up. So, an alternative is to just pimp your existing mobile device in order to make it look Apple's shiny new multimedia player.

It's also only available for QVGA devices at present, although the developer is looking into the possibility of a VGA port. You can flip effectively between portrait and landscape though.

For many people, Last.fm has not only superceded traditional radio, but also their MP3 collection has been left untouched for months, such is the power of the service. If you haven't tried Last.fm at all yet then you're probably wondering what the big deal is. Just try it. In fact, try it on your mobile so you can carry it around with you and really get a feel for it.

Though still in development stage, Last.fm Mobile replicates some of the functionality of the online radio app, allowing you to tune into the kind of music you enjoy wherever you go. The program furnishes you with the 'scrobbling' feature of Last.fm, which basically checks the songs you're currently listening to the most and automatically suggests tracks from similar artists, helping you to broaden your musical horizons.

Provided, of course, you have a Last.fm account, the application is a breeze to set up, and you'll be listening to some great tunes within a couple of minutes. However, because Last.fm Mobile is in its early stages of development, it's a little quirky in places and the interface isn't as slick as it could be.

In terms of functionality, the Pocket PC version of the software replicates both the scrobbling feature and radio streaming of the original, whereas the Smartphone version only handles scrobbling through Windows Media Player.

Despite its rather primitive nature, Last.fm Mobile is still great for enjoying the wonder of this online broadcasting revolution werever you go.

mPlayer has always been one of the best and most popular media players for Linux, and the open source app now makes its debut on mobile platforms in the shape of this Windows Mobile software. Although it's a stripped-down version of the original it still represents a great way to enjoy music and video on your handheld.

One of the best things about mPlayer is its support for a varied array of different media formats. As well as the ubiquitous handling of MP3, AVI, WMA and the like, the program lets you tune in to streaming media and recognises all types of Flash video.

In terms of its user interface, the program is a little simplistic, though not in a bad way. In fact, I much prefer to have a player that's light yet practical, rather than some bloated app with loads of features you don't need. Hence, you get basic options for locating a file, opening a playlist or adding a URL, without impacting on your device's memory too much.

If you're looking for a slick and simple way to handle all types of media on your Pocket PC then look no further than mPlayer.

You know the game. You know how to play. In fact you probably know all there is to know. This is a great mobile version of the old favourite. The graphics are nice and clear with great kaboom effects when you score a direct hit. It has all the feel of playing the board game which is difficult to achieve and the computer ranges from being a beatable challenge to a tough old sea dog.

The sound does all you want, some missiles away-style effects with a bit of booming and blasting when you get lucky. I really like this one, you should get it.

As portable movie players become more and more popular, the temptation to buy one of these sleek, spanking new devices becomes almost unbearable! But wait! As the proud owner of a Pocket PC, you probably already have the hardware necessary to enjoy video on-the-hop. All you need now is a piece of reliable, free software to convert and optimise your movie files for mobile use. PocketDivXEncoder is that piece of software.

The installation procedure for this application was a breeze, mainly because there wasn’t one! It was refreshing to see that a simple program didn’t need to touch the registry in order to run, let alone force us to restart the computer (as all Nokia’s apps do). So as soon as you download the program, you’re ready to go. The program itself was pretty easy to use, with controls and settings which should be familiar to anyone who’s even come close to thinking about video compression in the last five years. For those who haven’t, all you really need to do is tell the program which device you’ll be using and it’ll do all the work for you.

Experts will likely balk at the lack of fine-tuning tools available in PocketDivXEncoder but its ‘advanced options’ dialogue allows for greater control over such features as 2-Pass Encoding, XviD Compression, audio Live Effect and more. A really impressive little feature is the live clip resizing tool which allows you to preview your video while changing its dimensions - handy if you’re working with a device which doesn’t have native support from PocketDivXEncoder.

The most important factor in video conversion and compression tools is the quality of the end product. It’s no good reducing a movie to 4MB and rendering it completely unwatchable in the process. PocketDivXEncoder performed admirably when converting our (fairly high quality) test video, achieving good video compression without losing much detail. Small changes we did notice was a slight alteration to colour and brightness balance on the picture and an almost imperceptible shift in audio-video sync. These issues reflect the fact that this is not a professional level tool but then again they’re almost impossible to spot without really hunting for them.

Working with PocketDivXEncoder is on the whole a pleasing, simple and rewarding experience. That a free application can offer such reliable performance and high quality – at levels often missing from other, highly priced software – says a lot about what a good freeware program should look like. If you’re looking to convert video to fit your PDA, all you need is PocketDivXEncoder.

That said, if portable video is your heart’s desire, it would definitely be worth investing in a device built specifically for video playback which will provide much better overall quality.
