WinISO is a slick-looking, high-performance CD/DVD/Blu-ray image file utility tool that will allow you to carry out a selection of disk image tasks as simply as possible. So, what kind of tasks can the WinISO help you out with?

Well, according to the developer, it can: - Convert image files between ISO / BIN and other formats - Extract, edit, rename ISO files directly - Burn ISO image file to CD/DVD/Blu-ray Disc - Make bootable CD/DVD/Blu-ray Disc - Bridge and unbridge file systems - Mount ISO image files Disk images are clearly displayed across the top of WinISO, and once you get the right files added, it will be very simple to go ahead and process them into the type of disk image you need.

The whole app is pretty esthetically pleasing, in fact, which makes using it much more pleasant. The basics of WinISO are like any similar program. You choose what you want to create from the New File menu, add the files you want to include via Add Files, then choose the option you need from Extract, Make, Convert, Burn and Mount.

If you need to specify anything more, WinISO will prompt you, and the creation process is fast - although it can drag out if you're processing a large volume of data. The one thing we noticed about WinISO is that it doesn't have many options beyond the disk creation options themselves. This makes it a little less flexible than rival programs, but in all is still such a clear, straightforward program that we really didn't mind.

WinISO lets you create bootable disks, mount files and create ISOs all in a few clicks. It's a solid app that we recommend.

Download WinISO WinISO Standard 6.3.0.4905 in Softonic

Effectively, it's like adding an extra DVD drive to your machine but it exists only virtually on your desktop. You can also use it to create image files which can then be “inserted” into the virtual drive from your hard disk or from a network drive and thus be used like a normal DVD.

To use it, you don't even need to access the main interface. You can either mount a file by right clicking on it or via Explorer which should give you the option to mount it from there. When you do so, you're usually prompted if you want Virtual CloneDrive to execute the Autorun.exe file in your ISO or IMG. Alternatively, it will ask you if you want to browse the files contained within it.

The only problem I experienced with it was in Vista which isn't officially supported but it does work with. However, it seems that after you've performed the first mount, if you try to launch another, it may be unresponsive or only allow you to browse files from where you can execute the Autorun.exe file manually anyway.

Virtual CloneDrive is a superb and simple tool for freeing-up your DVD drive and preventing the need to burn DVD IMG and ISO files.

Download Virtual CloneDrive 5.4.5.0 in Softonic

Phantom CD 1.5.2

If you're constantly running applications from CD or DVD (like games), you may end up with scratched or damaged disks that will ruin your apps forever.

Phantom CD is the perfect solution for this problem. This tool enables you to access the contents of any CD or DVD by means of a virtual drive that doesn't require the physical disk to be inserted into the unit. The program works with ISO image files that can be produced with almost any disk imaging tool: just create the image from your favorite CD or DVD and use it in Phantom CD to mount a virtual drive. Not only it's safer for your disks, but also much faster as the reading speed in hard drives is always higher to that of disk units.

Despite its ease of use, we also found a few limitations in Phantom CD. First, it only works with ISO and BIN/CUE files, while other virtual drive managers also support formats such as CDD, NRG, MDF or MDS, to name a few. Also, we had no problems when mounting the drive – it worked perfectly well – but couldn't unmount it properly. The correspondent button simply didn't work, no reason why. In any case, if you use it to always mount the same image, this shouldn't worry you. Just remember that you'll need a lot of hard drive space in order to store all those image files.

Avoid using physical CD or DVD to run your favorite apps. With Phantom CD you can use virtual drives (only with ISO images, though) and run them faster and more comfortably.

Download Phantom CD 1.5.2 in Softonic

ISODisk lets you mount up to 20 simultaneous virtual drives based on ISO files. These may contain a complete operating system, a backup of your important files or even a copy of a game or program that needs to be constantly reading off the disk – which may end up ruining the actual physical support.

The program also includes a special tool, found on a separate tab, with which you can create ISO files from your CD disks. Unfortunately ISODisk doesn't let you create ISOs with the folders on your system.

If you ever need to work with ISO files as mounted virtual drives, ISODisk is a great choice.

Download ISODisk 1.1 in Softonic

The program works as a main basic app to which you can add several plug-ins in order to obtain new functionalities. These plug-ins are chosen during the installation process and can be changed at any time by running the installation again.

According to the author, Gizmo is addressed to all kinds of users, but I think it's more suitable for advanced ones. Among the featured plug-ins you'll find a launch toolbar, a synchronization server, a database tool or a disc image manager, which are generally very useful but certainly not the kind of apps that beginners are looking for.

On top of that, Gizmo is not intuitive at all as regards program configuration, nor does it have support for dragging and dropping elements, which would have been especially useful for the toolbar plug-in.

Disc Image 2.0.0

The Disc image system is a driver that can mount ISO CD/DVD images into a Microsoft Windows 2000/XP/2003 based system. This gives the impression that a new CD/DVD-ROM drive has been added and a disc has been inserted. The small size of the driver and its simple operation allow an integration which is similar to actually using CD/DVD-ROM hardware, but as the drive is virtual, there is no hardware noise or lag. It is even possible to mount as many images as there are available drive letters.

The Disc image system can mount ISO images that contain either ISO9660 or Joliet (or both) file systems, which on a Windows 2000/XP/2003 based system allows nearly all ISO images to be mounted. It will not allow images to be mounted if Windows does not read that type of file system e.g. HFS+.

For single users the Disc image system allows you to store frequently used CD/DVD images so they can be accessed quickly and quietly (no more loud whirring noises). It will also eliminate the need to have a disc left in the CD/DVD drive when running applications that require access to the disc. When using on a laptop, it allows better use of the battery as CD/DVD drives require a large amount of power, especially when the drive is running continuously.

When you create ISO disc images with products such as Nero, the created images can be mounted using the Disc image system, allowing them to be tested before being burned to discs, thus reducing disc wastage.

For networks that require a secure central location, or just want to store images in an easy to reach place, the Disc image system will allow those images to be mounted locally. This in turn protects certain images from unauthorised use and allows software stored on servers to be installed without finding the installation CD/DVD(s). There is no need for special server software as the small driver is installed on each of the targets. As the Disc image system works with the ISO standard, it gives you the opportunity to store images that can be accessed by other operating systems, such as Apple Macintosh OS X and Unix as they already have the built-in ability to mount ISO images.

Download Disc Image 2.0.0 in Softonic
