The documents can then be searched by keyword or using a query language.

Due to full Unicode support, Archivarius 3000 allows correct search in multilingual documents. For instance, a Greek-German bilingual document can only be handled in Unicode, otherwise Greek symbols and German diacritics would be lost.

File names are also in Unicode, which enable correct handling of Asian documents (Japanese, Chinese, Korean). Archivarius 3000 searches not only e-mail messages, but also attachments, including compressed ones. The following formats are supported: Outlook, Outlook Express, The Bat!, PocoMail, Netscape, Mozilla, Firefox, and those that are compatible.

Server mode allows you to search remotely and have remote access to your documents through any web browser (i.e. Internet Explorer). This mode can be switched on with a single mouse click.

Download Archivarius 3000 4.09 in Softonic

Opera 9.52

Following the release of new versions of both Internet Explorer and Firefox, the infamous 'browser wars' are flaring up again. Despite both Firefox 1.5 and the Beta of IE7 making significant strides, it would be be foolish to think this was a two-horse race. While gaining a good reputation with geeks and power users, Opera has long been a bit-part player among the big boys of the browser world. However, if this preview release is anything to go by, the Norwegian-built browser could finally be ready to punch with the heavyweights.

Opera has been pioneering new ways of browsing the web for some time. It has had tabbed browsing since the days before tabbed browsing was cool and developed the innovative 'mouse gestures' control system, where you navigate through the web just by holding the mouse button and flicking your wrist. The developers even dabbled with a multi-pane interface for viewing several pages within one interface.

The good news is that Opera has lost none of its appetite for innovation, and version 9 is packed with new goodies that will have the programmers at Mozilla and Microsoft choking on their doughnuts. For starters the app runs much quicker than the previous release, making it arguably the quickest browser around (except perhaps for Safari) at rendering pages. Incredibly, despite this boost in performance, the program appears to use less memory than version 8.5, making it far less draining on system resources than Firefox and IE.

In terms of features Opera is the gift that keeps on giving. New to the program comes OSX Tiger-style 'widgets', allowing you to check news, convert currency, view the weather and so on through a series of draggable pop-ups which anchor themselves in front of the browser. Although there aren’t many widgets to choose from at present, this is sure to change once the tech-minded Opera fans start developing more.

Another great addition to Opera 9 is BitTorrent support, allowing you to download torrents directly within the browser – a feature that amazingly no one had thought of before. This system works very smoothly, which makes us wonder why RSS feed reading support in Opera is still so poor.

Among the other new treats within the program is a nifty new search feature which lets you add any search engine to the search bar in the main toolbar. This means you can instantly access searches within your favorite online destinations (Softonic, for instance).

Tabbed browsing remains, although some users may be annoyed to discover that Opera has added close tab buttons to the tabs themselves rather than as a separate button. Having said this, the new web page preview thumbnails that appear when you rollover a tab are a real masterstroke. Mouse gestures are still there too, along with the addition of Total Recall-style voice commands – another example of how cutting-edge this browser is.

Opera's developers have been keen to ramp up security features too, and although they aren't highly original, the new content blocking and pop-up blocking functions serve their purpose effectively. What's more, it's refreshing to see a browser that embraces the latest web standards so freely, with the latest release boasting support for CSS 2.1 and CSS 3 tags.

The browser is remarkably stable and is far better behaved than Internet Explorer 7. Combined with its speed, innovative features and standards support, Opera is undoubtedly web software's best-kept secret, and the final release may prove to be even better than Firefox. Don't say anything though, or everyone will want it.

Download Opera 9.52 in Softonic

If you're tired of your old web browser, try using alternatives which, despite not being very well-known, they work perfectly well. One of them is Sleipnir.

Sleipnir is a complete web browser that can fully replace Internet Explorer or Firefox. In fact, it uses the Internet Explorer core engine but you can replace it by the Mozilla Gecko engine if you want. Sleipnir also comes bundled with Roboform, a handy password and web form manager.

When running Sleipnir for the first time, you can import data from quite a varied amount of browsers. I must say however that my first impression of Sleipnir wasn't very good: the interface is simply bloated with buttons and toolbars, too many for someone like me who loves minimalist design.

That said, Sleipnir does have many positive sides to it. You can browse the web comfortably (thanks to its powerful tab management system) and safely (with a wide array of security tools). Sleipnir also features a complete built-in search tool, an RSS manager similar to Firefox Live Bookmarks, support for proxy servers and many other interesting tools.

Sleipnir is a powerful alternative web browser that's definitely worth a try, even if you're happy with your current browser.

Download Sleipnir 2.8 in Softonic

Internet Download Manager 5.14.3

High speed Internet connections are quite common now but that doesn’t mean we don’t sometimes need some help when it comes to downloading game demos, videos, MP3 collections and other big files. So, even if you’re enjoying the fastest router in the neighborhood, take a look at Internet Download Manager, because it really has a lot to offer.

This excellent app will take care of all your downloads from the moment you install it on your PC. You can add new download tasks from the program’s interface but the usual thing is to let it capture the links. This means that every time you click on a certain file type (which can be specified through configuration options), IDM will handle the download for itself rather than letting the browser do the job. It’s a really handy option because everything is automatic: no changing from one app to another, no copying and pasting links, just no hassle at all. Also, it works with all major web browsers, such as Internet Explorer, Firefox and Opera.

Once IDM captures the link, you can either start to download the file right away or add it to a download list for later, which can be a good alternative if you need all of your bandwidth for the moment and plan to leave the computer on during the night. Downloads can be classified into custom categories right before starting them and can also be resumed if the connection is lost or broken for some reason.

As regards download speeds, Internet Download Manager does meet expectations, although it all depends on your Internet access. That is, don’t expect to download at the speed of light if you’re still using one of those old-fashioned 56K modems. Anyhow, IDM achieves quite satisfying download rates as a result of establishing multiple thread connections to servers. Also, it displays a small window with some interesting information about the download process: transfer rate, data downloaded so far, time left and a neat progress bar for each thread.

The program’s configuration menu displays a wide range of functions and tools devoted to handling your downloads, such as checking files for viruses directly from IDM with your own antivirus system or limiting the amount of bandwidth used by the program. There’s also support for server authentication and proxy, FTP and HTTPS servers.

The fact of the matter is, we couldn’t really find anything wrong with Internet Download Manager. It does its job and does it pretty well, so even if your Internet connection speed is far beyond the usual limits, you should definitely give it a try.

Download Internet Download Manager 5.14.3 in Softonic

Avant Browser 11.6.20

For a while now, computer users have been waking up to the real threats that exist while browsing the web. Every day, more turn their back on the established vulnerabilities of Internet Explorer and opt for the hottest open source project on the net, Mozilla’s Firefox. But there are plenty of alternatives that offer great features, and one of those is Avant Browser.

Based on Internet Explorer, Avant will import all your favorites automatically and also keep your settings intact. As such it makes a good alternative to the popular Firefox browser, which shuns all things IE, and may seem slightly too foreign from the conventions that many users have built up while using Microsoft’s browser. Although Avant Browser is based on the Internet Explorer engine, it doesn’t fall victim to the same security vulnerabilities (although no-one is claiming that it’s invulnerable), and while it’s at it, adds some great tools designed to enhance your browsing experience.

The Flash blocker is an effective way to keep memory usage of the browser to a minimum or to simply cut out those over-elaborate ads that invade and take over many web sites. To appeal to a wider audience, there are quick links that let you quickly translate pages to a wide selection of languages, or you can customize the look of the browser using the many skins that are included by default. Of course, no modern browser could claim to be complete without tabbed browsing and Avant really delivers the goods with a system that allows you to even reload tabs after you’ve closed them.

In fact, this browser has some of the best extras that we’ve seen to date, in particular the system whereby tabs can be resized like normal program windows letting you display multiple site windows side-by-side, within one browser window. There‘s also a useful toolbar item that displays tags describing the page that you’re on. Click on a tag and you open a list of site that result from a search using that tag or keyword; brilliant! And the piece de résistance is an automatic session saver that lets you open up all the sites you were browsing when you last closed the program.

Avant Browser is relatively unknown as a mainstream browser and as such is not restricted from experimenting and taking the best ideas from the big hitters, as well as adding its own nuggets to the mix. What you get is a very impressive selection of tools in a browser that will even run your Microsoft update without objections. Definitely worth consideration if you are thinking of changing browser.

Download Avant Browser 11.6.20 in Softonic

This works with all versions both past and present. It will show you all your file statistics, and will allow you to safely remove all the privacy related files, browser data, space wasting files, and various other unwanted garbage files found on your PC. Even if you do not know much about computers or files, you cannot make a mistake, as the software finds only garbage data and safely removes it for you!

It also cleans up many non-internet files, including your recent documents list, temp files, excess index files, various registry entries, run history, find history, thumb cache, and more. Normal deletes using the browsers will leave files in a state where the data can be recovered, as numerous file recover utilities are available on the net, but the secure file wiping feature of Complete Cleanup will render the file unrecoverable and permanently deleted. All cleanups can be chosen by you, or you can conveniently clean everything with one button click. Not only will this help protect your privacy, but it will also free up alot of your extra disk space, helping keep your system at peak performance.

Download Complete Cleanup 5.04 in Softonic

I use Gmail so much now that in many ways, I prefer it to even using Outlook. However, integration with Windows is nowhere near as good as Microsoft Outlook for obvious reasons.

gAttach! bridges that gap somewhat by allowing you to attach files directly to Gmail or Google Apps Mail directly from Windows. In other words, just right click on a file, select "Send To" and "Mail recipient" and the plugin will automatically open your Gmail client with the file already attached. It not only attaches files directly from Windows Explorer - it also opens up a whole new world of attachment possibilities from Microsoft Office, Adobe Acrobat, Windows Live Photo Gallery, Internet Explorer and Mozilla Firefox.

There's not much more too it than that - it integrates perfectly into Windows Explorer. However, you may experience some glitches. If you are sending a file attachment whose filename is in a different alphabet to the one you use normally (e.g. your computer uses English but you're sending a Spanish attachment), it may not recognize or attach the file. It's also limited by Gmail's 20MB file attachment restriction. If you're logged into your Gmail, it won't prompt you for your details but if you are not, then it does ask you for your username and password which you may or not feel comfortable submitting.

For any Gmail fan, this is an excellent utility that makes attaching and sending files so much easier than opening your web client all the time.

Download gAttach! 1.2008.7.7 in Softonic

Sure, you can always search through your browsing history, but that takes a lot of time and it doesn't always work.

This program analyzes your web browser's cache (from both Internet Explorer and Firefox) and extracts all the video files stored in it. You can then watch them again, as long as you have the right player. What's more, the program also includes a link to download the file to your hard drive.

VideoCacheView is great to review videos you specially enjoyed, but it does have some limitations: for example, videos are not always stored in cache while you play them online, which means VideoCacheView won't be able to recover them.
Most importantly, this program is completely free, simple to setup and and very straight-forward to use. It works by preventing the installation of adware and spyware by blocking them at source. In this way, you prevent attacks rather than having to scan for installed diallers, trojans and bots later with something like Ad-Aware. Of course, this is no easy task. One annoying aspect used to be that there was no auto update function but this has thankfully been solved in this latest version. Via these updates, the program is constantly updated with a blacklist of potential threats that the program monitors for. However, you do get the slight impression that nothing much is going on when it's installed. It doesn't seem to issue any update messages or warnings although it seems to be doing it's job properly. As a result, for many people, this program may seem a bit too flimsy to trust 100% but if run alongside something like Ad-Aware as a backup tool, you don't have much to lose by trying it.

A valient effort although I still wouldn't change it for the trio of Ad-Aware, SpyBot, and Spyware Terminator.

Download SpywareBlaster 4.0 in Softonic

You won't have to desperately try to recall the right password, or look it up in your notebook. Mozilla, Firefox and Thunderbird have comfortable password managers, though if you compare them to the Protected Storage of Internet Explorer or WAND of Opera, the latter ones are more powerful and functional.

However, human memory is not without flaws, programs can freeze or get dysfunctional, and the operation system can refuse to boot up. In this case, you will need help to recover your lost or forgotten passwords.

Mozilla Password Recovery is the program that help you to reveal the autofill passwords for Firefox and Mozilla, as well as the account passwords of the Thunderbird mail client. The program traditionally offers you two recovery modes: automatic and manual. With this utility you can also recover passwords protected with the User Master Password, thus being one step ahead of its competitors.

Features:

Recover all Mozilla, Firefox and Thunderbird autocomplete data as well as e-mail account passwords

Decrypt passwords protected with the User Master Password

Choose between two (automatic and manual) recovery modes

Export passwords to text, html or excel files

Multilingual passwords support

Friendly wizard interface

Detailed help

Full install/uninslall support.

Download Mozilla Password Recovery 3.1.2 in Softonic

My Privacy 3.5

If your PC is connected to the Internet, you should protect your privacy like your grandmother protects her life savings. What with viruses, malware, Trojans and the like omnipresent on the web, and getting more vicious by the day, there is no way you can overlook the safety of your PC. That’s where My Privacy comes in.

What makes the application attractive is its accessibility. A cartoon-like interface, with large colourful icons depicts each of the options: web pages visited, cookies, private information, graphics and temporary files. Don’t worry about erasing the wrong files by mistake. Once you’ve carried out one of the security tasks, you will see a list of the corresponding files that My Privacy has found. Just click wipe to get rid of them for good. If you’re really lazy you can just click the “Analyze” and “Wipe” buttons at the bottom and My Privacy will take care of everything. You should consider carrying out these tasks daily if you use the Internet often.

How do you know that you’ve performed all the My Privacy tasks fully? Just check out the privacy level percentage at the top. It’s a mystery as to how this number is calculated and what it really means. Is it the amount of files My Privacy has erased? Is it the percentage of My Privacy tasks you’ve carried out? From our observations, we guessed it corresponded to the amount of files you erased out of all the ones My Privacy found. So if you’ve wiped out everything, it should tell you your privacy level is 100%. You should be aware by now though that the web is riddled with dangers and that it’s impossible to have total protection. A 100% privacy level doesn’t mean you’re bullet proof against any threat.

The basic PC user will enjoy My Privacy’s security recommendations, found in the options section. These are obvious yet often overlooked tips to improve the safety of your PC. For example, did you know that using autofills in online forms puts you at risk? What about allowing access to temporary file preferences? Check that you’ve tweaked them to My Privacy’s recommendations to increase the privacy of your PC.

My Privacy’s weakness lies in its purpose. When run for the first time, the program failed to identify all of the cookies, temporary files and private information stored in the PC. Basic information like the cache could not even be wiped. We also realized that My Privacy had no way of blocking pop ups or websites, an absolute necessity when browsing the web.

My Privacy makes beginners aware of the importance of privacy on the web and what steps they should take to protect it. Unfortunately, in terms of security, the program does not offer anything you wouldn’t find in full security suites. Chances are if you’re using a relatively recent browser like Opera or if you have a good antivirus program you’ll be able to carry out the same security tasks much more efficiently.

Download My Privacy 3.5 in Softonic

WinGet 3.0

WinGet is a simple download manager that makes the task of downloading files lighter on you.

The program looks quite basic when compared to other similar tools, both in appearance and functionality. Although the developers have included general browser integration among its features, we couldn't make it work with Firefox – only with Internet Explorer.

However, as the program can also monitor the Clipboard, you can copy links in Firefox in order to be able to download them with WinGet. Inexplicably, sometimes the program keeps on displaying the download start dialog, which I found pretty annoying.

All your downloads are conveniently organized by the program into different customizable categories. You can also check the amount of data downloaded during a certain period of time, be it just today or the whole month. WinGet features a quite complete configuration menu where you can tweak the program's behavior from its bandwidth usage limit to what it should do after the download is finished.

WinGet is a small, lightweight download manager that includes only the most basic tools in this kind of software applications.

Download WinGet 3.0 in Softonic

Smart PC 4.3

System optimisation is a bit like security in that those who understand it, know how important it is and how to alter their browsing and usage habits to achieve it. However, there are a huge number of titles that claim to offer a helping hand in streamlining your system, many of which promise the world but don’t deliver the goods. The makers of Smart PC have put plenty of effort into making an original interface but have they carried that over and made a tool that lives up to its name?

On first opening the program, it’s not immediately obvious what you’re supposed to do - its vaguely labelled buttons are plastered left, right and centre of the interface. Thankfully, as you mouse over each, a separate window gives you a more detailed explanation and you can get started on whatever you need to do without complication. Getting stuck into the options will generally give a good idea of who the software is aimed at and judging from those of Smart PC, it has been made with inexperienced users in mind. Thanks to the very restricted level of control the user has, there are several important settings that haven’t been included. In comparison to a free alternative that does the same job, CCleaner, Smart PC is lacking secure deletion, an update check and most importantly, it only examines the cookies from Internet Explorer, totally ignoring those of Firefox.

Smart PC regains some kudos with its log file system, which by default saves fifteen log and undo files, should the registry changes have an adverse affect on your PC. The clean and optimize features are run-of-the-mill for this kind of software and don’t bring anything to the table that you wouldn’t be able to do with a few clicks in the regular Windows interface.

The most striking thing about Smart PC is that it practically holds the users at arm’s length from doing anything that could damage their computer but while doing so also limits the amount of optimisation that can take place. As a simple click-and-forget solution it’s great, but for more serious optimisation, it makes better sense to use the free CCleaner, or to start studying so you can get your hands dirty with the registry.

Download Smart PC 4.3 in Softonic

This easy software app cleans all recent document lists, temporary files and junk data left after browsing the web, using certain programs and downloading data from the Internet. This means that the program not only recovers some valuable disk space, but also protects your privacy by erasing all traces of your computer usage. The whole process is done via a wizard-style interface in a few simple steps that hardly take a couple of minutes.

Indo Cleaner works fast and efficiently, although I missed having some more advanced functionality like the possibility of choosing the categories that the program cleans, learning how much space I'm gaining after deleting all those files or even making a backup copy before erasing them… just in case.
