Apowersoft Free Screen Recorder doesn’t cause any obvious slow down while it records, allowing you a smooth capture session as you open other programs and web pages. Something completely new to Mozilla Firefox is Facebook integration. Firefox now supports Facebook's social API so you can have dedicated buttons for Facebook in your browser. Mozilla Firefox supports Facebook's Messenger within Firefox, giving users desktop notifications as well as a persistent friends list and activity feed on the right. Conversations will open up as overlays on top of whatever website you're on so you can multitask while you chat.

Usability

Mozilla Firefox really changed the way people browse the web when it originally burst onto the scene. Today Firefox remains an incredibly powerful and customizable browser, although competition from Google Chrome has given it a definite run for its money.

Conclusion

Mozilla Firefox 20's interface isn't much different from previous versions, but the features it has added certainly make for a nicer, more enjoyable browsing experience overall.

There are icons in the Security tab that are clearly marked with a green status light indicating everything is working as it should. This makes it easy to see what parts of the application require user action.

For the most part, avast! Free Antivirus is an application that you can configure and forget about. The program will display a popup if anything needs your action.

Quality

avast! Free Antivirus is well designed with tons of features. While it's not as simple as it could be, it works well and is completely free. It's nice that avast! Free Antivirus doesn't include an annoying tool bar, but it does install a web extension to monitor malicious links while you're browsing.

While avast! Free Antivirus excels as an antivirus application, it doesn't do much in the way of being a one-stop-shop for all your computer maintenance needs. Other apps like IObit's Advanced Systemcare with Antivirus offer more features that will make sure your computer is running its fastest.

Scans were performed quickly but not the best we've seen. This really depends on your hardware and how many files you have on your computer.

Conclusion

At the end of the day, it's easy to see what avast! Free Antivirus remains at the top of our download charts. The amount of features that free users have access to is amazing. While it's annoying that the app nags you to upgrade to a paid subscription, it's a small price to pay for a well designed antivirus solution that's completely free. Ultrasurf is a super lightweight application so there aren't many features to speak of. When launched, the app will show the three status lights with their respective speeds next to them. You can select the one that gives you the best performance.

In the options, you'll find options for manipulating Internet Explorer, which Ultrasurf defaults to, though you can disable this. You can manually specify a port for listening so you can forward that port with your router.

Other than this, Ultrasurf doesn't really have any other features.

Interface

While Ultrasurf's interface is easy to use and comprehend, it looks like an app from 1998. The icons are low resolution and have low color depth. These are the stock icons you can find on a machine running Windows 2000.

Usability

Ultrasurf is easy to use but that's because there aren't many features. While this is good for beginners, the app really suffers from the lack of options and information. For example, there's no indication of where the proxy server you're accessing is from.

Other apps like Hotspot Shield give users much more control and is more transparent about what the program is doing. Ultrasurf is more like an on and off switch. There's no fancy encryption algorhythm to mask your traffic.

This is what the company has to say about Ultrasurf's encryption:

Various methods of theft

Monaco is a story of old-school robbery. The first level sees 4 specialized thieves escaping from a prison. The story evolves from that point, naturally progressing and moving on to bank heists, fleeing from hospitals, infiltrating embassies, shipwrecks and more. It's all very interesting and fun to play.

At the start of Monaco, you've got 4 thieves to choose from on each level. Each has his own strong points, such as the ability to see enemies from far away, excellent lock-picking skills, the thug who has a special way of dealing with security guards, and so on. Each new level offers you new characters, each with their own unique abilities.

Each level of Monaco plays the same, no matter what you are robbing; a bank, an embassy, a boat. You begin outside, must find a way in, breach security on the relevant floors, reach your objective (this could be an object or a person), retrace your steps, and flee.

What I love about Monaco is how everything goes down. Levels are more or less open, and the opportunity for infiltration is pretty frequent. Getting to the end of the level depends on you, the character you've chosen, and how you decide you want to play. Above all, Monaco is very realistic, and as we all know, in real life, it doesn't matter how well you've planned as something can always go wrong.

And go wrong it does. Guards and police are unpredictable, passers-by might get suspicious, telephones ring and draw people to your hiding place, there is CCTV, guard dogs and a mountain of other things that make your job harder.

Don't forget that Monaco also has a multiplayer mode, which makes things really fun, but different. It's much harder to be meticulous when you've got company and things have a tendency to get a little crazy. Monaco's still a great game in multiplayer, it's just very different.

Great usability

One of Monaco's great virtues is the fact that it's so easy to control. It's simple to jump straight in - you need the keypad to control your character and the mouse for other movements. Even then, there are only two buttons to use - all of your interaction with the environment, for example, is carried out by "pushing" objects. For example, to open a closed door, you push it, and a time meter will let you know how much longer you need to apply pressure. The same goes for hacking computers and picking locks. It's a simple system, but it's so well integrated into the game that it's hard to find fault.

Of the few weapons you have and objects you pick up, you manipulate and/or use them with the mouse.

Groundbreaking design

What really grabs your attention when playing Monaco is the design, which in turn has a direct effect on playability. The game is laid out like architect's blueprints, so the graphics are deliberately flat. You get used to this design after 2 or 3 levels, but at the beginning it's very hard to follow. We'd go as far as to say that at the start of Monaco, you have no idea what you're seeing.

After playing a while though, Monaco begins to make sense. You begin to figure out what the mysterious icons stand for, and the black map that started out looking so weird transforms into a guide that's full of hints and signals. Further more, even the "little square men" begin to show their personalities. Everything falls into place.

The music really adds to Monaco. It's piano music, but it speeds up when you're about to be discovered, becomes tense when things look dangerous, and smooths out when you're already escaping into the distance. It's ironic, clever, and just about perfect.

Not just another heist game

Monaco is wonderful; there's no other way to put it! It's possibly the best game of its kind, and if you're a fan of heist films, you'll definitely be drawn to it. From a player's point of view, it's a breath of fresh air, for your eyes AND your fingers. Monaco lets you play freely, and even though there are a few limits to your exploration, they're there to help you reach your objectives.

The absolutely only negative we could point to is that Monaco can become a little repetitive. It's got nothing to do with the story, it's just that you have to repeat the same actions over and over again. Luckily, level design and the difficulty curve join together to minimize this problem.

Don't be fooled by how weird Monaco looks at first sight, it's really, really worth the effort.

Nokia Music for Windows 8 is a desktop version of Nokia’s streaming radio service available on Windows Phone 7.5. Similar to Pandora and Spotify, Nokia Music allows unlimited audio streaming of “Mixes” categorized by artist or genres. You can also download Mixes for offline use or use Nokia Music for local music on your computer. While Nokia Music for Windows 8 has a $3.99 monthly subscription, there is a seven day free trial that includes all features.

How it Works

Nokia Music uses streaming Mixes which are similar to Pandora. You cannot select specific tracks for on demand listening. Instead, each Mix is a radio station that focuses on an artist or genre and provides similar sounding tracks. You can browse through Nokia’s premade Mixes or create your own. The default Mixes include various genres, top charting music, recommendations from popular musicians, sponsored music, and more. Nokia’s library is large and includes various genres of music, standup comedy acts, and songs from TV ads. If you are not a subscriber you will be limited to only 30 second previews per track, which is far too short. Subscribers will be able to listen full length tracks.

Creating your own mix is much more limited as you can only search by artists and not other categories such as genre or time period. You can also only add in three artists at most, resulting in a limited selection of music. On the plus side any Mix, premade or your own, can be downloaded for offline listening. Offline tracks are unfortunately disabled for non-subscribers. If you’re not satisfied with Nokia’s selection of music you can also use the app to listen to your own local files.

How it feels

The layout is comprised on large and medium sized tiles grouped into sections. The sections of Nokia Music include the track you are currently listening to, previously Mixes, default Nokia Mixes, your own creations, downloaded music, and local music. On the main track page there are buttons to display a song’s lyrics or open a menu with the band’s information. Depending on the artist, this can include a bio, image gallery, their Twitter feed, upcoming shows, similar artists, and Mixes they appear in. This is a wealth of information that will help you learn more about bands and discover new music.

Right clicking on Mix will provide buttons to download the track, buy it from Nokia’s store, or remove it from the front sections. The options menu includes changing accounts, updating subscriptions, providing feedback to Nokia, troubleshooting, and permissions. Settings allow you to adjust audio quality based on your connection type (Wifi or mobile), permission to send personal data back to Nokia, display wallpapers, and if the app runs is allowed on the Lock screen. Nokia Music subscriptions are relatively new, yet the amount of options is surprisingly plentiful.

Quality

Nokia Music’s wide selection of music and comedy is very impressive. The quality of streaming audio is decent at 192kbps for all tracks. Downloading music is generally fast, although you can suffer delays and pauses in streaming if you download several Mixes at the same time. Music with offensive lyrics are either listed with a clear “Explicit” icon or are completely censored with more broadcast friendly versions. The latter is very surprising for an online streaming service. In most cases all of Nokia’s library is clean and there is no setting to listen to adult versions.

Accessing Nokia’s library requires either a Nokia account or Facebook along with a monthly subscription fee; this is also on top of the normal Microsoft account to run the app. Surprisingly, if you sign up with Facebook Nokia Music will not update your activity or provide any form of social linking. Without a subscription you will be limited to short 30 second clips and cannot download music.

Final word

Even though you need a subscription and cannot access on demand music, the app still provides an amazing selection of music and comedy as well as the ability to download Mixes. PasswordBox allows you to store Passwords for many different websites. The Chrome and FireFox versions automatically allow you to enter passwords for sites such as Facebook, Hulu, LinkedIn and Amazon; the Internet Explore expands the list with financial sites such as Bank of America and J.P. Morgan. If these selections aren’t enough you can add your own favorite sites and store the corresponding passwords.

These passwords become encrypted on your own PC before they are sent to your PasswordBox account. When you visit a site registered with PasswordBox, you enter your Master Key (PasswordBox account password) to decrypt your password and log into a site. This is both convenient and a good means of preventing theft. On the downside, there is no way to recover your Master Key if lost, meaning that if you forget it you’ll be stuck out of your accounts.

Usability

PasswordBox has a somewhat counter-intuitive installation process. You will first download and install the PasswordBox program to your computer. This won’t actually add any extensions to your browsers. Instead, this will grant you access to features on its website and the ability to create an account. You must then go to the download page and install the extension for the browser you are currently using (Internet Explorer, FireFox, or Chrome). If you use all three browsers you'll have to download and install these individually. It would be much easier if accessing PasswordBox required just one app.

PasswordBox’s layout is slightly different depending on the browser. On FireFox and Chrome PasswordBox first opens up a new page with various tabs to insert passwords, change settings, or watch video tutorials. In Internet Explorer the extension is presented as a popup, but the buttons and functionality remain the same. After inserting your passwords it may be easy to forget that PasswordBox is even activated. The only small inclination you will notice is that applicable websites will now have a green “Box” icon within the password box.

Quality

PasswordBox’s appearance is very minimalistic and mundane. The FireFox and Chrome versions take up entire webpages which either contain unused space or unnecessarily large text. The Internet Explorer version is much more compact and easier to navigate, making it superior to the other two versions. Passwords appear as soon as you enter a website and logins activate smoothly without confirmations (You can set optional prompts via the settings menu). If you are ever confused by the interface, PasswordBox has a detailed help section and a gallery of in-depth tutorial videos.

Conclusion

PasswordBox is an excellent means of keeping all of your passwords in one place. Because your passwords are encrypted you won’t have to worry about online theft. Just be sure to remember your Master Key or you could be permanently locked out. Though the installation process is odd and confusing, once PasswordBox is set up it is easily accessible from Internet Explorer, FireFox, and Chrome. If you have too many passwords to keep track of PasswordBox is a great extension to have.

If you search on 500px an overlay will appear with only the first twenty search results selectable. Unfortunately Custom Google Background will not give any sort of error message or notification if nothing can be found on 500px. Any image you're unhappy with can be deleted by pressing the "x" icon in the upper right corner.

Quality

When you visit Google there will be a slight delay loading your background. You will typically see the standard front page for a second or two before your image and personalization appear. Once the image loads there are no noticeable performance issues, even when the background contains large and/or animated pictures.

Conclusion

Custom Google Background is a great way to change the look and feel of your Google homepage. It's interface is easy to understand and use. While there some minor display and loading issues Custom Google Background is a fast and painless way to change Google's aesthetic.
