Soundtracker is a free Symbian application that allows you to search for, listen to and share music from your mobile phone.

You can search Soundtracker for stations based on a particular artist or genre, then listen to songs by this artist and similar music. It works in much the same way as streaming music apps for other mobile platforms, such as <taglink type="program" country="en" id="75200">Last.fm</taglink>, <taglink type="program" country="en" id="322624">exfm</taglink> and <taglink type="program" country="en" id="3335275">Soundtracking</taglink>.

Just like these other music apps, Soundtracker has a social side to it. You can share stations that you've generated either via email, <taglink type="program" country="en" id="118150">Facebook</taglink>, <taglink type="program" country="en" id="113573">Twitter</taglink>, or on Soundtracker itself. You can 'follow' other users and access all the stations they've generated (and vice versa), which is great for discovering new music. There's even a feature that lets you find stations created by people in your area.

In general, the Soundtracker user interface is easy to get around, and once you've signed up for a free account you'll be streaming music in no time. There are a few small annoyances though, such as the fact you can't skip back through previously played tracks in the player interface - only forwards. We experienced some crashes in our tests on a Nokia C7, which seemed to occur when searching for stations added by others.

The selection of music on offer in Soundtracker is pretty broad, and covers the full gamut of popular music.

Mp3Player is designed to be a simple, hassle-free alternative to the default Symbian music player. It allows you to enjoy your tunes without having to think too much about how to play them

Make no mistake about it, Mp3Player is incredibly easy to use. The interface is divided into just two tabs. The first, 'Main', displays the details of the track that's currently playing, including the name, artist, album, track length, bitrate, and whether it's in mono or stereo.

To start or pause playback you just hit the control button. Skipping through songs is a little more difficult though and requires some dexterity to hold down the ABC/stick button and press the joystick left or right.

The 'Files' tab in Mp3Player offers a simple viewer, which automatically detects and displays your music files, and comes with its own search feature.

One of the best things about Mp3Player is the fact that it's skinable. You can choose any image stored on your phone and use this as a background to the app, meaning you can have a different MP3 player every day.

Ultimately, however, Mp3Player is little more than just a pretty face. It fails to provide anything other than the most basic playback controls. You won't see anything like a graphic equalizer, advanced playlist editing or cover art, for instance.

If you're looking for a very simple way to enjoy music on your phone, Mp3Player will oblige - just don't expect anything too exciting.

Download Mp3Player 3.62 in Softonic

Nokia DJ Mixer allows you to record songs and remix them with other tracks to get creative with your music.

MP3 players in mobile phones are nothing new, but not many devices can boast an on-board DJ mixing desk. Not, that is, unless you've got Nokia DJ Mixer installed. It's just a case of clicking 'New Playlist' and loading up the tracks you wish to mix, up to nine tracks.

Although the mixing desk in Nokia DJ Mixer is a long way from the more powerful Windows audio mixers, it's still great fun to play with. You simply need to queue up the tracks and move the fader to start mixing. It's so easy that anyone can do it.

Another aspect of Nokia DJ Mixer is its Karaoke section, which also provides lots of laughs. You can load up your own Karaoke audio files or use the samples included in Nokia DJ Mixer then hit record and sing into your phone. The resulting vocal masterpiece can then be played back and stored on your phone.

Overall, Nokia DJ Mixer makes for a fun new way to enjoy digital music on your phone.

Download Nokia DJ Mixer 1.0 (Nokia NSeries) in Softonic

Nokia Audiobooks 1.07 (S60 3rd)

Books are great and everything but sometimes reading them is a bit of a chore, especially if you're illiterate. If you're the sort of person whose eyes go funny when you stare at pages of words for too long then try listening to an audiobook instead. Nokia Audiobooks is an app specifically designed to help you do this on your phone, and it makes for a great experience.

The software consists of two components: an environment for Windows capable of converting a CD or MP3 file into a format optimised for playback on your phone, along with the player itself. The compression format it uses, AMR-WB is quite impressive, and is optimised for voiceovers, preserving acoustic quality while significantly reducing file size.

This is important because some audiobooks can reach up to 20 hours in length, creating a monster file that would be near-impossible to handle on your device were it not for Nokia Audiobooks. With this app you can get 5-10 times more content on your phone than you would if you compressed the file as an MP3.

You might be thinking 'why do I need a dedicated program for audiobooks when I can play them on my default media player?' Of course, you could do this, but Nokia Audiobooks comes with tailor-made features such as the ability to browse chapters, set bookmarks and automatically continue the story where you left off last time.

If you want to make your journey to work more enjoyable get hold of Nokia Audiobooks and enjoy great works of literature on your mobile.

Download Nokia Audiobooks 1.07 (S60 3rd) in Softonic

pvAuthor 3.3.1

Video playback and recording capability is fast becoming a top concern for mobile phone buyers. pvAuthor is designed to take video files on your computer and convert them to a size, resolution and bit-rate suitable for playback on your phone.

When running it for the first time, pvAuthor presents you with a fairly complicated configuration interface. Its four tabs (Input, Clip Info, Encoding and Output) used what we felt was pretty technical language for a first time user. After selecting the input file, the program became unresponsive for a few seconds. This also happens when switching between tabs in the configuration interface. While this only lasted about three or four seconds, it was a little unnerving and caused noticeable jumps in a separate audio player program we were running at the same time. pvAuthor is a program apparently best used on its own, so as not to cause instability in your other apps.

The next important setting you’ll need to choose is the desired screen size of your finished product. Naturally, you’ll want to choose one that’s as close to your phone’s screen as possible. This option, however, is pretty difficult to find. It’s located under ‘Encoding’. On this tab, a series of sub-tabs appears at the bottom of the screen, and preferred output video size is located on the ‘Codec’ sub-tab. Quite why this important setting is hidden away in such an odd place, we couldn’t fathom. This and other strange and confusing factors made the whole user interface feel like the advanced settings for some much simpler program.

Settings for your preferred handset can be saved as profiles, which will take the hard work out of converting videos next time you come around to use the program. Individual movies’ settings can also be saved in sessions, though we felt that this feature was somewhat obsolete for most users who will probably only seek to convert each video file once.

In terms of video quality, pvAuthor performs admirably. The video it generated after we chose settings for a Nokia 6230i played well on that handset, and videos for phones with larger screens and more memory were likewise of a generally high quality. No doubt, we could have tweaked some settings in the labyrinthine configuration dialog, but pvAuthor’s default settings seem perfectly adequate for cutting down on file-size but not sacrificing video quality. We were slightly disappointed by the lack of support for various file-types; pvAuthor only claims to support MPEG and AVI files, but the AVI movies we tried to open were rejected. Support for other video types (such as the increasingly popular MOV format) would be a welcome addition to pvAuthor.

pvAuthor is useful tool for users who are aiming to convert MPEG movies or videos to fit the screens (and memory cards) of their mobile phones. The video quality it produces is of high quality but the program is somewhat let down by the complexity of its configuration dialog and lack of support for popular video formats.

Download pvAuthor 3.3.1 in Softonic
