Resco Explorer 2008 4.10.3

I've always found viewing, managing and sorting files on a Palm something of a tedious and cumbersome process. We've all grown accustomed to using Windows Explorer or the Mac Finder to browse files, and small screen operating systems rarely make it as easy.

Resco Explorer changes all that though, providing an altogether more powerful and effective solution to the default Palm file browser. For starters, it provides a more intuitive way of viewing your files, with a file manager that displays your data and applications in a two-paned tree structure view. You can dig down or shift up through directories using the clear, accessible arrow icons.

One of the crucial features of Resco Explorer is the fact that it lets you launch applications with a single tap, something not usually seen on a Palm file manager. It also makes it easier to edit and customise applications associated with certain file extensions.

Another boon of the software is the way it handles compressed files for you. Thanks to an icon at the bottom of the screen, you can view the contents of zipped files just as you would if they were in an ordinary folder, along with the ability to uncompress them.

With a dazzling array of other features including an an image viewer, drag-and-drop file movement and secure storage, Resco File Explorer really is a jack-of-all-trades when it comes to managing files on your handheld. If anything, the sheer range of features, toolbar items and settings may put off new owners of a Palm device.

But for those who have grown tired of the simplistic file navigation on the Palm, Resco Explorer is a gift from on high.

Download Resco Explorer 2008 4.10.3 in Softonic

ScaleMaster 1.5

I've never been great with musical instruments. In fact I'm so bad that I once tried blowing into the end of a violin trying to get a note. As a result, I'm often a bit scared about reviewing musical applications but I was pleasantly surprised with how beginner-friendly ScaleMaster is.

The Palm program allows you to experiment with different scales to perfect your musical compositions and harmonies. Like I said, I'm a bit of a novice when it comes to playing music and I never realised just how many different scales there are. There are over 100 listed in ScaleMaster and they originate from all four corners of the globe.

It's easy to become bogged down in technical jiggery pokery in many music apps, but what I like about this program is its simplicity. You simply choose one of the scales from the drop-down list, pick from one of four clefs (treble, bass, alto or tenor) then choose a virtual instrument to help you learn the scale. All the notes in the scale are then displayed through a clear, colourful depiction of that instrument. The instruments available are the piano, guitar, drums, mandolin.

You get a few options to tinker around with, such as volume settings, notation appearance and the ordering of the scales. I would have liked to have seen audio previews of the scales when you highlight them from the drop-down list, but generally I really enjoyed using this one (although my favourite instrument, the bassoon was missing from the virtual instruments).

Whether you're a beginner or a musical genius, ScaleMaster provides a great way of learning scales on the bus.

Download ScaleMaster 1.5 in Softonic

ZLauncher 5.45

ZLauncher is one of a wide range of launcher applications, designed to help you manage your Palm PDA and launch its applications from a simpler and more user friendly interface. What makes ZLauncher special in its class is the variety of extra tools and features it brings to your Palm’s desktop.

The first feature to really impress in ZLauncher is its ability to launch programs from a storage card. This function allows you to move your applications to an external card and run them from there, even if they were originally installed to your device’s built-in memory. The logic of moving and running applications in this way is that by freeing up space on your Palm’s internal memory, you have more RAM free, thus helping your programs run faster and more efficiently.

The file explorer aspect of ZLauncher is a massive improvement on the native Palm file manager, providing features such as ‘tabbed’ browsing (allowing you to view multiple storage devices or folders in one window), and the ‘detail’ view mode which is reminiscent of Windows Explorer’s ‘details’ option and displays data on your files (size, date modified etc) alongside the filenames.. The addition of the Trash Bin (very similar to the Windows Recycle Bin) is a welcome improvement, as is ZLauncher’s ability to delete entire folder trees, an option curiously absent from some other launcher applications.

ZLauncher includes a themes option, allowing you to skin the program interface, customise icon sets and set pretty much any image as your device’s wallpaper. After changing icon sets, however, we noted a marked increase in ZLauncher’s memory consumption as well as various issues with icons appearing and disappearing. While the customization feature is a good idea, it seems that by using it you significantly increase the load on your Palm device. This is a shame but at the end of the day, themes and icons aren’t deal breakers in an application specifically designed to help you launch applications and manage your files.

In all, ZLauncher adds some seriously useful functions to your Palm’s desktop. While its memory load and customization options need some improvement, ZLauncher’s core features make it the best all round choice in its class.

Download ZLauncher 5.45 in Softonic

miniPiano 0.6

The piano is a great instrument, but it's certainly not cheap to buy one. If you want to learn how the instrument works a more economical solution might be to install miniPiano on your Palm.

Granted, miniPiano is far removed from the real thing, but at least it gives you a flavor of where the notes are and how they sound. The software basically installs a keyboard display on your screen and you simply need to touch the keys to play music. A musical score displayed above the keyboard shows you which note you've played in musical notation form.

One of the great things about miniPiano is the fact that it can play back the notes you've entered, allowing you to actually compose music on your Palm. You can then save your MIDI music to share with your pals.

Unfortunately, I felt miniPiano could've been a little better designed. The fact that not all keys are displayed on screen at the same time (you need to use arrow buttons to scroll along the keyboard) makes it quite a cumbersome experience at times. Likewise, the musical notations at the top of the miniPiano interface need to be scrolled too. Also, the sound of the piano is quite tinny and not much like the real thing.

Nevertheless, miniPiano makes for a bit of fun for anyone interested in how a piano works.

Download miniPiano 0.6 in Softonic

If you're a car owner then I'm sure you'll know all about the importance of keeping all the records and information about your vehicle up-to-date.

In my experience though stuff like insurance, maintenance and registration details tend to get scattered around the house or the garage and you can never find this information when you need it. Wouldn't it be great if you could centralize all of the important info about your car and have it close to hand at all times. Well, now you can, thanks to Vehicle Manager for Palm.

The application is designed to help you record all manner of details about your vehicle on your handheld device. It's split into four different categories, represented by tabs at the top of the interface, namely: Details, Insurance, Dealer and Notes. The way this is presented makes it incredibly easy to both view and enter information.

However, the real beauty of the app is the sheer amount of data it can record, including the name of the car, vehicle ID number, insurance policy number along with coverage and renewal date info, repair and maintenance history, and much, much more. You can even use it to track your fuel consumption history. Vehicle Manager could also be very useful for car dealers, as it allows you to record and manage details about multiple vehicles.

This really is a comprehensive digital log book for your car and it covers pretty much every piece of information you'll need in an easy-to-handle manner. It would've been nice to see an option to insert pictures of the car, but I can forgive the developer for that.

If you have a car and a Palm, this is an essential download.

Download Vehicle Manager 3.5.106 in Softonic

ListPro has always offered both of these things but now it has some great additions. Firstly the new formatting options make it easy to arrange all your plans exactly as you want including with bullet points and numbers. You can also now quickly access websites if you need to get some more information.

One of the best features is the 25 new templates that are provided to get things done extra quickly so you don't have to start from scratch the whole time. This can prove a bit disappointing as they are not always exactly how you want them, but in terms of getting lists finished quickly they are a great addition. Also you can now share your lists with other users which is a great idea in theory and especially helpful for 'favourites' lists with subjects like music etc.

Download ListPro 5.0.0.2016 in Softonic

Remember those 'Simon' games that were popular a few years ago, where you have to remember a sequence of colored lights? Well, Sequence allows you to revisit this classic memory game on your Palm device.

The game displays a series of nine differently colored squares on screen and begins playing them in a sequence (hence the name), starting at two. After the pattern has been displayed you need to replicate the sequence by tapping the appropriate squares on screen. After each one you get right, one more square gets added to the end of the sequence, making it harder and harder. If you play in Expert mode, then there is a completely new sequence after every one you get right, which, unless you're an elephant, becomes virtually impossible when you get to a sequence of about 12.

You have the option to turn on sounds if you find this helps (I didn't), but aside from this there isn't much you can customize. Hence, after a while the action does get rather repetitive.

However, if you want a way of boosting your memory skills, Sequence will let you do this from wherever you may be.

Download Sequence 1.0 in Softonic

Personally in these situations I pull out my mobile phone and settle down to a stimulating puzzle game.

Vexed is just the game for these kind of trips and lives up to its name by providing you with hours of brain-bending fun. The purpose of the game is to clear the board by matching up colored blocks. You can push the blocks from side to side and allow gravity to send them down but you can't move them upwards, which is where your powers of logic are tested to the limit.

Some of the levels are infuriatingly difficult and yet it becomes impossible to stop playing them such is the desire to not let them get the better of you. Even after you've finished a level you're still only a tiny fraction of the way through the game because there are hundreds of levels organised into different 'packs'. Even perusing the names of the levels is entertaining, as each pack has its own theme, from Beatles songs to U.S. cities.

There are quite a few options to play around with, such as customizable block sets, sound effects and scoring. In-game options include solutions, undo, view remaining blocks, and more.

SplashMoney 4.09

The management of our personal finances is a chore most of us avoid like the plague, for a variety of reasons, especially not wanting to face up to our over expenditure, as well as the fact that personal finance management is normally a pretty boring pastime. SplashMoney won’t stop you buying all those Ferraris but it can take make the task of managing your income, outgoings, loans, mortgages and cards much easier and more enjoyable.

The first thing to note about SplashMoney is that it comes in to robust versions: one for your Palm and one for your Windows or Mac desktop. The desktop edition is powerful enough to be used on its own as an alternative to Microsoft Money or Quicken. Including all the usual features (budgeting, cards, multiple accounts, recurring transactions etc), SplashMoney makes it easy for you to take control of your home finances and can even help you with producing reports of transactions over a given period.

SplashMoney’s main feature is, of course, its Palm functionality. Being able to keep track of purchases, payments, cheques and bills while on the move makes the program so much more useful than its competitors. If you’re using a Palm PDA with wireless capability, you can even let SplashMoney access your online banking service via the Direct Connect service. This feature in particular makes it unbelievably easy to stay up to date with account changes, but unfortunately will only work with selected North American banks.

SplashMoney makes it really easy to start managing your personal finances. With a wide range of customisation options and features, it may well be the best money manager available for Palm users. While the genre doesn’t usually set hearts racing, SplashMoney is highly recommended for anyone who’s shied away from finance management software in the past.

Download SplashMoney 4.09 in Softonic

As I grow older, I realize this is becoming less and less likely to happen. However, I've just stumbled across a mobile app that will give me almost the next best thing.

Agendus is an excellent personal information manager designed to make you more you a more productive human being through your Palm. The application combines the different standard applications such as address book, notepad, tasks and email, and supports data synchronization with Microsoft Outlook.

It's incredible to be able to manage and access so much information from one place, and it's certainly much more efficient than the Palm operating system. The program centralizes a huge range of tasks, including managing contacts, appointments, tasks, notes, SMS and emails.

There's a whole bunch of stuff you can do with this information using Agendus, such as displaying data in daily, weekly, monthly or quarterly views, grouping, editing and deleting. A powerful built-in full-text search ensures that whatever you need is always close at hand. Everything is very simple to synchronize too, using ActiveSync.

Thanks to an intuitive centralized interface and some slick integration with Outlook, this really is a product you can't afford to be without if you have a busy personal or professional life.

Download Agendus Standard Edition 12.07 in Softonic

This can be difficult though, and is made more tricky by the fact that you shouldn't write any of this information down in case it falls into the wrong hands.

Don't worry too much though because there are applications, such as Resco IDGuard that allow you to save confidential information and documents securely on your PDA. The application provides a complete environment for recording, classifying and protecting your information.

Unlike most other programs in this style, Resco IDGuard can safely store PIN numbers, bank account information or credit card details as a Word document, Excel sheet, PDF or an image. You can list all the contents hierarchically, use templates for recording data, schedule alarms, save and retreive backups, and export records.

The encryption technology used is very secure so you can rest easy in the knowledge that no one can get their greasy mitts on your data.

Provided you can remember your master password, Resco IDGuard is a great way of keeping all your secret information close at hand at all times.

Download Resco IDGuard 1.20 in Softonic

You could, of course, jot everything down on a bit of paper, but quite frankly that's both old fashioned and impractical.

Instead, why not give SplashNotes a try and keep on top of everything using your PDA. The software allows you to manage all kinds of notes and lists on your mobile device, helping you to ensure that you never forget anything and giving you the power to jot down and manage literally any information you like.

Entering information into the program is really easy but where the program really excels is in its categorisation tools. You can create as many categories as you choose and organise them all using an expandable tree structure.

In order to master the program you'll need to spend a fair amount of time practicing in order to discover its many hidden features. Luckily though, there's a very comprehensive online user guide to help you out.

If you want an information manager that gives you total control over your notes, you won't go far wrong with SplashNotes.

Download SplashNotes 1.1 in Softonic

Free 20 Language Phrasebook

As one of my new year resolutions I challenged myself to learn a new language. Thankfully, doing so is becoming much easier thanks to the Internet and computer software. Now you can get a basic grasp of 20 different languages from the palm of your hand thanks to this helpful pocket eBook, which is compatible with any mobile device.

Before you start you need to install a mobile eBook reader on your device. Once you've done this though it should recognise Phrasebook straight away and you can instantly get stuck into the 1,349 pages.

There are a whopping 20 languages covered. OK, here we go, deep breath: German, French, Spanish, Catalan, Portuguese, Italian, Greek, Dutch, Swedish, Norwegian, Finnish, Czech, Polish, Russian, Hebrew, Arabic, Japanese, Chinese, Indonesian, and Malay. Phew!

Each chapter represents a different language and all are structured neatly in the same way. You get an interesting history of the language and its usage at the start, followed by a prononciation guide then a phrasebook divided into 'Basics', 'Problems' and 'Numbers'. All the phrases are the same for each language. The basic phrases are useful, though you want be having many intellectual conversations after learning them.

I would have liked to see more of these simple conversational phrases instead of the Problems section, which concentrates on negative stuff like: 'Leave me alone', 'Stop! Thief!' and 'I'm going to call the police'. Using these won't exactly endear you to the locals, will they?

There are plenty of interactive features in here to give the Phrasebook a more proactive learning approach. For instance, you can highlight words, add notes, insert bookmarks and even add drawings to the text.

If you'd like to get a very basic handle on some of the World's most widely-spoken languages, install this one and you can do so on the bus.

Download Free 20 Language Phrasebook in Softonic
