NeoOffice 2.2.5 Patch-1

NeoOffice is a welcome open source alternative to the pricier Microsoft Office and iWork'08 office suites. The application carries with it all the applications that you'd expect: word processing, spreadsheet, presentations, database and drawing.

You'll find the interface of NeoOffice and the range of tools in the office suite very similar to what you'd find in Microsoft Office. However, NeoOffice does load up much faster when opening up any document. Most tools open up in a new window so make sure you don't have too many open, otherwise the interface will look really cluttered.

All the different applications in the NeoOffice suite work well and are more than worthy replacements to the options available in Microsoft Office and iWork'08. The presentation tool is the only one I was disappointed with, as it doesn't offer as many templates or tools as I expected to create a shiny, professional presentation.

You'll find very thorough help docs and excellent wizards to master all elements of NeoOffice.

Although the presentation tool is a little weak, the rest of the applications in NeoOffice make for a very good free office suite.

Download NeoOffice 2.2.5 Patch-1 in Softonic

If you want to be on the safe side though, you can install an antivirus and regularly scan your Mac.

ClamXav is a free virus checker which can perform full system scans or analyze specific folders. Although the interface feels a little outdated, especially when using Leopard, it's easy to use and lets you select the areas you want to check on your Mac.

You can schedule automatic system scans to be performed regularly, by setting the day of the week and hour at which you want ClamXav to start its analysis. I suggest setting it in the middle of the night or some time when you know you won't be using your Mac.

ClamXav is very thorough and will generally find malware, if you're unlucky enough to have some on your Mac. The virus database is regularly updated as long as you're Mac is connected to the Internet.

We did find ClamXav a bit slow when doing full system scans though, and it can easily take a few hours before finishing. The best is therefore to identify areas of your Mac to scan and do theses individually. You can use the Sentry function to monitor changes in folders, however some users have found this function to be unstable.

Despite being a bit slow, ClamXav is a thorough virus checker for Mac with a regularly updated database. It's also completely free.

Download ClamXav 1.1.1 e933 in Softonic

StatPlus:mac offers even more data and statistics tools to work with.

Once you have your Excel document open, just launch StatPlus:mac. You'll be able to choose the analysis you want from the menu bar. Just like with any Excel formula, a new window will appear and you will have to select the ranges of data you want to work with.

I found it a little confusing having to open up both Microsoft Excel and StatPlus:mac, and was a little disappointed that it only worked with the Office application and not other spreadsheet applications.

However StatPlus:mac comes with many tutorials and loads of example documents to get started with the program. If you are familiar with statistics though, you won't have any trouble working with StatPlus:mac.

The highly awaited new version of Messenger for Mac is finally out. While it keeps a slightly similar interface and same set of features, Messenger for Mac comes with some extra features.

You will still have to sign in using your hotmail or Windows Live account. Once installed, you'll see Microsoft Messenger 7 offers a slightly updated interface, yet overall very similar to that of version6. Messenger now offers Bonjour support, so you can detect and connect with users on the same local network as you. Features like sending files, displaying a picture or emoticons are unchanged. You can change your display name and add a personal message just by clicking on them. One new feature is that you can give nicknames to your friends. Just click on their display name and start typing. We also liked the search feature, which is really handy to quickly find a contact or email address.

It's obvious that this upgrade is aimed at corporate users as they get the most significant updates though. The highly touted audio and video feature, with which you can have videoconferences with your contacts, is only available to them. The same goes with detailed presence information, as you'll need a version of Office Communications Server 2007 to use it.

Corporate users will love the new features in Messenger for Mac 7, like Bonjour Support, detailed presence information and especially audio and video. Personal users will find barely anything different from version 6.

Download Messenger for Mac 7.0.1 in Softonic

It's a task management system that is supposed to help you be more productive and handle tasks and projects, both long term and short term.

EasyTask Manager is an application which supports GTD. You start by creating your different projects, then filling these with actions. You'll have to process your actions by putting them into the correct category. EasyTask Manager respects GTD terminology, so you'll find the traditional inbox, next actions, next days and someday folders, among others.

Once an action is finished, make sure to mark it as completed. EasyTask also allows you to sync your projects regularly. You'll have to enter an importance level, start and due date and ensure your tasks are in the correct context.

If there's one thing I could complain about, it would have to do with the flexibility of the interface. Don't get me wrong, EasyTask works great, but it still doesn't match Omnifocus.

Still, if you're a big fan of the GTD method, you should find EasyTask Manager to be a good productivity tool.

Download EasyTask Manager 2.0 in Softonic

OmniGraffle is an excellent application to create complex graphs, layouts or charts.

As with other Omni Group applications, OmniGraffle is very intuitive, and offers a well structured interface, with easy access to your projects, tools, styles and other menus. OmniGraffle is a great program partly due to the tools it includes like Bézier lines and shapes, stencils or connection magnets. To improve the looks of your shapes you'll have to work with visual styles and smart guides to improve the look and structure of your diagrams.

Apart from powerful tools, a good diagramming program needs to give you a clear outlook of your project, even if it is very complex. The outline view in OmniGraffle gives you a clear view of the whole diagram and comes in really handy ton control changes as you're working. You can also use the Automatic Layout inspector to arrange your project in the best way possible. In case you need to insert multiple areas in your project, OmniGraffle integrates subgraphs, to collapse more content into sections and keep your graphs clear.

OmniGraffle will also let you import Microsoft Visio VSD files, meaning you can work on diagrams with PC users and not worry about compatibility issues.

There's no doubt about it, OminiGraffle is a powerful application, replete with tools and styles to design great looking complex diagrams. It's no surprise then that the program has a price tag of $199.95, which not all users will be ready to pay.

Whether you're looking at creating bar code sheets, business cards, flyers, or labels, iLabel is flexible enough so that you can create the sort of label you're looking for. You'll set the printable zone, page size and margins, the space between labels, and how much labels appear on a page. Width and height of labels can also be adjusted. iLabel also lets you easily import text and you can preview your labels straight from the application window.

Once you're satisfied with your labels, you'll be able to print them out. Make sure you save your settings if you intend to use them again later on. In all, iLabel offers a streamlined process to quickly produce and print out a large number of labels. It is ideal for office and administrative work and for small shops. The only issue with the program is that it can jam every once in a while. If that happens, just close the application and restart it.

You should take a look at Yojimbo, an elaborate mix of Finder and Spotlight.

The application can store and organize all your files, whether pictures, documents, pdfs, notes, bookmarks or more. The program is very intuitive thanks to an attractive and well structured interface. You can use the Drop Dock or hotkeys to add elements to Yojimbo. In the application itself these can be managed by all sorts of folders, tagged, flagged and labeled. You can also create your own custom collections.

Another solid feature in Yojimbo is its advanced searching and filtering. Thanks to Spotlight integration, Yojimbo can find anything really quickly as you type and record your searches. Also, if you work on multiple Macs you can use .Mac sync to keep your Yojimbo collections accessible. Although if you have a lot of files the application can take some time to load, it flows really well once up and running.

The only real disappointment is photo handling. Yojimbo doesn't store RAW images and editing features are fairly limited. Even though you can easily import them into the application we still suggest using a separate application to store your snaps.

Uncover under which blocks the mines are hidden, based on the numbers you get when clicking on blocks. This game is a perfect little timewaster: incredibly addictive and timeless.

Mac users never really had an equivalent of the game, until it was transposed to their OS in the form of Mine Swept. This game resembles exactly the PC version (it even uses the same color values) and offers the same rules and levels. The game varies slightly in terms of controls. You have multiple clicking options to flag mines, can highlight neighbors of a square or even create your own custom minefield.

Mine Sweeper addicts who have switched to Mac will love this exact adaption of the classic game.

Download Mine Swept 1.47 in Softonic

Painter's Picker 2.1.1

Even though extremely simple applications, color pickers have some sort of aura to them, which I can't really define. Painter's Picker is no exception. While this program won't work on its own, you'll have to drag it to your color picker folder in your Library, it works in a variety of applications, mainly Apple, Macromedia and Adobe ones. Choosing a color in the wheel is the simple part, but the exciting bit comes with all the advanced features.

You can find related colors, select nearest web safe tones, or choose closely related tints and shades. Painter's Picker also easily lets you set saturation, hue, angle and birghtness. Angle can even be entered as an equation. Another feature I particularly liked was being able to create and save color schemes. You can select your own colors, find ones that match these and export that list to use in other applications. Painter's Picker features both five different analogous and tetradic schemes and four complex complementary schemes. Needless to say you can also import color lists created with other color pickers.

Now to the drawbacks. If you don't read the user manual, you might have a bit of a trouble running the application. As I explained earlier on, you'll have to drag your Painter's Picker file to your Library color picker folder. Another downside of the application is that, alhtough it works with a lot of programs, it surprisingly won't run in Illustrator, InDesign or Pixelmator.

On the whole though, an excellent color picker with many advanced features.

Download Painter's Picker 2.1.1 in Softonic

TaskPaper 1.0

TaskPaper is a to-do list which lets you quickly jot down and organize your notes. It allows you to separate different elements into projects, tasks and tags. While the program could seem basic at first, it actually works quite well, as it automatically formats the notes you copy into it.

Elements like projects, tasks and contexts are marked by different punctuation, making them quickly recognizable. TaskPaper incorporates tags, just like a browser, to separate elements in your project. One of the strong features of the application is that it saves everything in text, which means that you can use it anywhere, whether in a word processor, email or on the web. While a great Getting Things Done (GTD) tool, TaskPaper might still be a bit too simple for some people.

If you're looking for a no fuss tool to jot down your ideas, TaskPaper looks promising.

Download TaskPaper 1.0 in Softonic

This way, you can easily and cheaply access your office network from any point of this world, always knowing your communication is safe and protected from others.

The Internet introduced a new way to work, allowing fast access from anywhere. Unfortunately, safety is at low standards and data transferred through the Internet is easily accessible for eavesdroppers and forgers. IPSec has been developed to close this gap. It adds the following functions to protect your data:

Encryption

Cipheres your data using strong state-of-the-art algorithms, making it impossible to read your data for everybody but you

Zimbra Desktop Alpha 0.58

The Zimbra Desktop brings the excellent online collaboration tool right onto your computer. Although the installation process was a bit lengthy, once Zimbra Desktop was up and running, everything went smoothly. You'll have to have all your server and mail details ready to be able to configure your Zimbra account. After that's done, Zimbra will sync with your mail client and download all your mail data. This can take a certain amount of time so you'll have to be patient.

All your mailbox elements like inbox, contacts, calendar or documents will appear in a new tab in your default browser. We quite like the search feature, set at the top of the interface, which lets you quickly find anything in your items. However, probably because the application is still in Alpha, the search can be quite slow, especially if you have a large mailbox.

In terms of overall performance, Zimbra Desktop ran seamlessly whether online or offline. The application manages to sync ingoing and outgoing data well so that you really never have to worry about the state of your connection. This download also includes the Zimbra Toaster, a discreet little add-on that will pop up every now and then to notify you of any new messages. We're looking forward to further releases of this application, which should prove quite handy for professionals on the go.

Download Zimbra Desktop Alpha 0.58 in Softonic

Its great, great, great grandson, the Nintendo DS is now even more powerful than the high-tech machines doing the rounds in the arcades of the early Nineties. In fact, it's so good that sometimes you'll want to play with it in the office, which obviously you can't. Well, actually you can. Actually you can't. Well, you sort of can. Let me explain...

DeSmuME is a Nintendo DS emulator that allows you to play games on your Mac using DS ROM files, which you can download from the Internet. Trouble is, downloading these files is illegal, so on your own head be it if the FBI van rolls up outside your house. Legalities aside, this is a pretty decent emulator, which was orginally designed for games programmers to develop and test their latest creations. It can be a little tricky to set up, but once running you'll be able to enjoy a huge selection of games in ROM format. But if the Feds ask, don't tell them it was me who told you.

Download DeSmuME 0.7.3 in Softonic
