You could pretty much consider FileZilla an open source success story. It's popular, works well and fast, and regularly updated. If you're looking for a solid FTP client what more could you ask more?

In fact, FileZilla is not just limited to FTP, but also handles FTPS and SFTP for secure transfers of multiple files on multiple servers. The interface gives you a quick outlook of all your transfers, sites and disks and makes it easy to drag and transfer. I also quite like the QuickConnect feature to access your favorite server in seconds.

FileZilla is known to be fairly fast, and can also resume downloads and handle very big transfers, I'm talking here higher than 4 GB. You can set both local and remote filters for things like images, explorer files or CVS and SVN directories or even create your own. FileZilla also includes a tool to compare directories in terms of file size or modification time.

The application can guide you when setting up your network and lets you set speed limits in case you don't want to overload your bandwidth. One thing really missing from FileZilla though is a scheduler to automatically set transfer times.

Despite lacking a scheduler, FileZilla is an excellent open source FTP client.

Download FileZilla 3.5.3 in Softonic

ShowMyPC is a free PC collaboration tool.

This free, open-source app will allow you to view and access another PC, screen or desktop – perfect when multiple users need to see the same thing or for providing remote assistance. ShowMyPC couldn’t be simpler to use – both users install the app on their respective PCs. The person who wants to share their PC hits "Show My PC Now", and the person who wants to view hits “View Remote PC”.

ShowMyPC will then generate a password that the other user will need to provide in order to access your PC. You can also choose to share just an application. The app lets you take screenshots and host and join scheduled meetings. ShowMyPC also has a Chat WhiteBoard feature, for in-sharing conversations.

On a technical level, you’ll be able to configure proxies and private servers, to boost security. You’ll also be able to modify the default server properties established by ShowMyPC by right clicking on the TightVNC Server icon that will appear in your system tray. In all, it is a free, easy-to-use application that makes sharing easy. Sure, ShowMyPC’s not a good-looking program, but it is very functional.

For free, uncomplicated desktop sharing, give ShowMyPC a go.

Download ShowMyPC 3055 in Softonic

MLdonkey is a multi-platform multi-networks peer-to-peer client. Originally, it was the first open-source client to access the eDonkey network. The protocol was reverse-engineered using an efficient protocol sniffer, Pandora.

Apart from eDonkey , it also supports several large networks, such as Overnet , Bittorrent , Gnutella (Bearshare, Limewire, etc), Gnutella2 (Shareaza), Fasttrack (Kazaa, Imesh, Grobster), Soulseek (beta), Direct-Connect (alpha), and Opennap (alpha). Networks can be enabled/disabled, searches are performed in parallel on all enabled networks, but each file is only downloaded from one network (wait for next release !), but from multiple clients concurrently.

MLdonkey runs as a daemon on the computer. It can be controlled using several interfaces: the simplest one is telnet (telnet 127.0.0.1 4000), a more interesting one is a WEB server (http://127.0.0.1:4080/), and a binary protocol allows access using more elaborate Graphical Interfaces (see the GUIs available on your system at the bottom of the page). MLdonkey comes by default with a GTK interface. All these interfaces can be used locally, or remotely (after disabling security restrictions). MLdonkey is written in Objective-Caml , a powerful language that runs on most Operating Systems.

Download Mldonkey 3.0 in Softonic

ManagePC 2.5.0.13

Use remote desktop, VNC, reboot, start/stop services, uninstall software and more directly from the ManagePC interface.

The program has actually been around in various forms since 2005. It began life simply as an .HTA script but development moved to the .NET framework in 2006 which vastly improved it's usability and opened it up to a wider audience. In late 2006 ManagePC was made available to all users without Active Directory. ManagePC allows you to make an inventory of all aspects of machines that belong to the same domain. With ManagePC, you can see at a glance the hardware available in each machine, operational services, software installed, running processes and also manage users and groups on your network. It goes much further than that though as the program can be accessed remotely via a Remote Desktop or VNC which means that you can also reboot, uninstall programs and stop services at any time.

For network administrators or just someone that wants total control over their PC, ManagePC packs a powerful punch.

Download ManagePC 2.5.0.13 in Softonic

It's not only useful for swapping files but Nodezilla also offers other features such as chatting, video streaming, multicasting and photo sharing. The way Nodezilla caches files means that it can send files in half the time that P2P network normally does. it also does not clog up your bandwidth because it reduces network congestion by localizing access traffic. It's also a remarkably secure way of sharing data because it uses complex algorithms and distributed networking among multiple users which act as a "mirror". In this way, the file is always available no matter if the source has disappeared. The only downside is that the program runs on Java which is always a bit sluggish at the best of times. This does open up the option however of allowing you to control the client remotely, a bit like with eMule

For quick, easy and anonymous file sharing of secure items, Nodezilla is a solid and efficient solution.

Download Nodezilla 0.4.37 in Softonic

FileASSASSIN 1.06

FileASSASSIN is a handy little tool that lets PC users delete locked files that contain malware on their computer.

Even the best antivirus software could potentially miss a threat to your PC. Many times when malware ends up on your computer, it comes along with its own form of protection to make it difficult for you to remove it. If you have files on your computer that won't let you open them and your PC's acting a little strangely, it's possible this might be exactly what's going on. Common error messages include "Cannot delete file: Access is denied" and "The source or destination file may in be use." If these aren't malware infected files, it's possible the file has just gone into lockdown, which is still a problem.

FileASSASSIN can help you open these files and, if need be, remove them from your computer entirely. With its simple interface, you really only need to click and drag the problem files to get started unlocking them. Or, if you'd prefer, FileASSASSIN lets you browse your computer for files. FileASSASSIN has options that include unlocking locked file modules, unloading modules, terminating the file's process and deleting it entirely. There's only one thing to be aware of - make sure the file is actually a problem before taking any drastic steps.

During testing, FileASSASSIN wouldn't always allow certain files to be unlocked through the click and drag feature, but otherwise it worked pretty comprehensibly. The FileASSASSIN layout is a little plain, but it gets the job done.

FileASSASSIN is also available in a portable version.

If you're concerned about locked malware files on your computer, FileASSASSIN will help you take care of the risk and get them unlocked and even deleted quickly.

Download FileASSASSIN 1.06 in Softonic

ListGarden RSS Feed Generator 1.3.1

The ListGarden program is a tool for manually creating and maintaining RSS feeds. It is an easy to use open source authoring tool operated with a browser interface that can run locally on a computer running Windows, Mac OS X, or Linux, or accessed remotely through a web server. The resulting XML file may be stored locally or automatically copied to a remote web server using FTP. It is useful for RSS feeds that need to be maintained without an automatic system that has built-in RSS generation capability. It can be used for RSS feeds that are change logs, event lists, lists of physical objects, or post lists of podcasts and manually authored weblogs. (Automatic systems with built-in RSS capability include most weblog authoring tools and some content management systems.) The program requires no knowledge of XML or the RSS data format, and is tuned for quick additions of new items and simple editing.

ListGarden can produce an optional companion HTML file for human browsers to read. It also has basic list-maintenance functions making it useful as a simple list manager. The RSS XML and HTML files can be uploaded to any web storage. Most ISPs like EarthLink, Comcast, and Verizon provide basic web hosting storage to their customers that can be used to hold RSS XML and HTML files, so you can publish lists even if you don't have a main website.

Download ListGarden RSS Feed Generator 1.3.1 in Softonic
