I always enjoyed art at school and have since developed an interest in digital illustration. Being out and about as much as I am though, it's difficult for me to find the time to sit on the computer and get creative.

Step forward JazzyDraw, an illustration app that allows you to set your creative juices loose on your Palm device. The program is armed with a few tools that let you scribble straight onto the page in a number of fun ways.

Beware that you'll need to install the plua.prc file that comes in the zipped download in order to get the program to work. Also beware that JazzyDraw demands a fair amount of memory (around 4Mb) in order to run properly, so you may need to shut down some apps or delete files before you start to free up space.

Once you've got going, it's quite good fun. You can play around with a number of easily-selectable tools, selecting the fill colour, line properties, drawing shapes, zooming, tinting, and more. While seasoned digital artists may be disappointed by the lack of advanced drawing tools, this is a good one for kids.

You won't create any masterpieces, but JazzyDraw is OK for doodling while you're sat on the bus.

With the FIFA World Cup just about to start, now’s the time to lay your hands on the application which will accompany you through the highs and the lows of the great football competition.

The main features to look for in a World Cup companion program are ease-of-use, in-depth information, automatic updates as the results roll in, travel data (for those lucky enough to be in Germany for the event) and… price. TinyStocks’ Football 2006 performs well on all the main features and what’s more, it’s completely free!

This simple program provides generous detail on each of the national squads, their home nation, and competitive history. As well as this, Football 2006 offers some more basic information about each venue in Germany, and guidance on how to reach them if you’re attending a game. The graphics are nice and clean, but lacking in any team or stadium photos which might have made the program a little more interesting.

Football 2006 provides a simple update service which allows you to download the latest scores via WAP/GPRS on a Treo or via a normal Sync operation with other Palm devices. It’s not clear whether this data will also include information about goal scorers, red and yellow cards, or penalties, but given the fact that this hasn't been mentioned, we’ll assume that it’s not included.

While Football 2006 is not the most advanced World Cup companion on the market, it’s easy-to-use, clear and above all, free. The fact that it doesn’t include team photos isn’t a major nuisance – the program does what it sets out to, admirably well and without taking up much space on your PDA.

If you've ever wished for such a solution and own a Palm Treo then you're in luck because TreoMsgr allows you to schedule the delivery of SMS messages over time, so you can send texts into the future.

The lightweight application integrates well with the Treo user environment, allowing you to compose messages, set the time and date of transmission, and choose one or more targets, within a familar interface.

You can use all the Treo Tasks features, including the 'repeat' function to schedule your messages, however, a recursive groups feature is not included in TreoMsgr at present. It also lacks the ability to combine "Groups" with individual phone numbers in the "To: " field.

Nevertheless, it's a simple enough tool for scheduling SMS messages for future delivery.

When Simon and Garfunkel wrote the Sound of Slience, I'm not sure they were talking about TreoMute for the Palm, but nevertheless the song is very apt for this application. Perhaps it could be on the advert. Not that there will be an advert. Anyway, I'm not reviewing Paul and Art's song, I'm analysing the software, so let's get on with it.

Essentially TreoMute is an interesting utility that allows you to activate the silent mode on your Treo at given interval times programmed by yourself. The app empowers you with the ability to activate silent mode by simply pressing one button. After a given time the program will then switch back on the sound on your device.

There are a few options available from the settings menu, including the definition of the button to activate mute, the mute interval, along with the elements of your handheld that you wish to mute.

The program works very well but you'll need to watch out because certain Treo applications may lock your activation key to that app, meaning that it won't work when you come to use it to mute your apps.

Perhaps TreoMute could've included a few more options for scheduling mutes but nevertheless it's good for quickly disabling the sounds on your device.

Being of English tongue, I don't really have to face the challenge of entering accents or special characters when I'm typing.

From what I've heard from foreign friends and colleagues though, it's not always that easy, especially if you're trying to enter them using Palm's Graffiti feature, because it simply doesn't recognize them.

Accenter is designed to change all that, and allows you to enter a variety of accents used in languages such as French, Spanish and Italian, as well as giving you access to special characters such as the German umlaut and Polish and Portuguese characters.

Thankfully, adding accents and special characters with Accenter is a very painless process. As soon as you type a letter the program will pop up a selection of transparent boxes displaying possible accents. You can select an accent simply by pressing the corresponding button on your PDA's controller. If you don't want to use an accent you just keep typing.

It's a very slick system, but the constant pop-ups do become annoying after a while, so I'd recommend you disable the application when you're writing documents in English.

Nevertheless, if you regularly type in a language with accents or special characters, this is an essential Palm download.
