YoWindow is a weather forecast app that stands out from the crowd.

Instead of displaying data as a desktop notification, YoWindow features a colorful, fully-animated window that displays a nice landscape and changes according to actual weather conditions.

Besides having a very original interface, YoWindow is also quite informative. It displays the current weather situation (sunny, cloudy, rainy and so on) plus temperature (both real and the one it actually feels like), wind, pressure, and humidity. All these conditions are reflected in an customizable animated background – which you can replace with your own photos as well.

YoWindow includes the weather forecast for the next three days. You can click on each day to access the information right away, or move the timeline on top to check how weather conditions change as hours go by – and also see beautiful sunsets and dawns. The program can be set as your default screensaver as well.

Generally speaking, YoWindow is a surprisingly nice weather forecast tool, though I missed having more landscape designs to use as background. Another annoying detail was not to be able to scroll down the list of countries and cities with your mousewheel when choosing a location.

Dropbox currently offers 2 GB of free storage, which should be enough to share quite a bunch of files.

Worried about privacy? Fear not. Only computers you link to your account will be able to access your files. Also, Dropbox keeps track of changes, so that you can access previous versions of a file. In a way it works as a backup tool as well, because it keeps copies of your files.

Dropbox has a main drawback though: it's painfully slow. Yes, it works in the background and yes, you don't have to be checking the uploading rate every ten seconds, but 30 minutes to upload three photos is simply too much for me.

Aviary Photo Editor is a straight forward and concise graphics editor for Windows 8. It doesn’t have the level of effects and customization as Photoshop or GIMP, but is intuitive enough for novice users. Aviary Photo Editor is powerful for a free app and will be a practical, no frills addition to your library.

Features

Aviary Photo Editor contains several staple features found in most image software. You can change a picture’s orientation, crop, or adjust contrast and brightness. Aviary Photo Editor has filters and effects to uniformly change hue or create lighting. These filters can be applied multiple times, further magnifying the intensity. Overuse of Aviary Photo Editor’s filters will quickly make pictures appear surreal or haunting.

There is a sticker option to add rasterized images such as hats, ties, and arrows. However, all of these stickers are so blatantly cartoonish that they contrast any photo, regardless of filtering. Aviary Photo Editor contains text and drawing tools, but the lack of feathering and limited color palate will generally result in unbelievable images.

Finally, Aviary Photo Editor has tools to remove red-eye, whiten teeth, and add blemishes. These tools have rather large diameters, making it difficult to precisely edit on smaller images. Aviary Photo Editor is better for fast and simple jobs rather than detailed projects.

Usability

Aviary Photo Editor’s layout is unusual for a photo editor. The image you’re editing in placed in the middle of the screen with the utility bar underneath. The most obvious omission is a lack of zoom or scrolling an image. This makes it very difficult to properly edit small images, or apply detailed editing to larger ones. Aviary Photo Editor's drawing tools only have six sizes, with the smallest size generally being too big for most jobs.

Brightness, contrast, saturation, and sharpness are all controlled by large sliders. Using these will offer a preview of the applicable adjustment. It’s very easy to back out and cancel any changes you’re not happy with. You don’t need to save or name any images as each job is saved automatically.

Quality

Aviary Photo Editor’s appearance matches other Windows 8 Modern UI apps. Large rectangular icons are presented against a dark gray background. As more edits are saved they will appear in a grid on the right. You can scroll through this to easily compare images or find what you’re looking for. The quality of finished images depends on the original image. Even without any save settings images are compressed into small size PNG files.

Conclusion

Aviary Photo Editor is a good editing tool for novice users that want to edit quickly. It lacks the detailed precision of other photo software, making it unsuitable for complex projects. If you want to simply crop, adjust levels, or change orientation and want good compression Aviary Photo Editor will prove to be a handy app.

Thunderbird is a desktop email client, an alternative to Microsoft's Outlook, from the developers of Firefox.

Thunderbird is Mozilla's award winning and free solution to manage your mail more efficiently. And there are many advantages of switching to it too. Unlike Mail for example, it can handle virtual identities and create on-the-fly addresses and it's widely regarded as having one of the best spam filters out there. Most recently, it's been updated with a slick tabbed interface to make managing your e-mail easier.

The fact that like Firefox, Mozilla Thunderbird can be beefed up with all manner of extensions makes it an extremely competitive mail client. It's also now much faster and more stable than before due to the Gecko 5 engine.

Getting going

Setting up Mozilla Thunderbird is painless. You can quickly import your mail and contacts from your Outlook or Mail account and set up POP3, IMAP or SMTP accounts in a flash. To stay well organized, Mozilla Thunderbird offers filters to deliver your mail into separate folders and inboxes. And of course, there's a built-in spell checker to make sure that your mails are professionally crafted.

What makes Mozilla Thunderbird slightly more unusual is the fact that it comes with an integrated RSS reader. Nowadays, this is a little outdated because many people use a separate application - or even Firefox itself - to follow RSS feeds but it may be useful if you only want to mail and follow RSS feeds at the same time when composing mails.

Searching your mail

The search tool in Thunderbird is excellent and searches happen in real time as you type. Search results are displayed in a separate tab. Tabs in general are a very big part of Thunderbird and like Firefox, you can have multiple messages open in separate tabs. This is a fantastic feature of Thunderbird although does tempt you to have too many mails open at once. Archiving is also another handy feature for those that don't want to delete messages but want to clear space in their inbox.

So what about security? You might think an open-source mail client would inherently be less secure than a paid one but Thunderbird is surprisingly secure with a fairly bulletproof spam filter. The reason being is that Thunderbird is regularly updated and crafted by volunteers who's main interest is making a better product rather than profiting from an end-product. Security updates are regular but small so as not to slow-down Thunderbird.

Exchange support

One of the biggest selling points of Mozilla Thunderbird is that it offers Microsoft Exchange support, meaning it will appeal to Office users who previously discounted it.

On the downside, the app is lacking some finesse in certain areas. Thunderbird still doesn't have conversation style email views like in Gmail (although an extension to do this can be downloaded separately) and there aren't many options for managing attachments and photos. There's also no calendar but again, this can be downloaded separately in the form of "Lightning".

Overall, Thunderbird is an excellent free alternative to Microsoft Outlook.

Chameleon for Windows 8 keeps your lock screen background interesting by cycling through new photos at a set interval. You can set it to change anywhere between 15 minutes and two days. Chameleon for Windows 8 provides a great way to be greeted with a different, interesting photo every time you log in.

Beyond setting lock screen backgrounds, Chameleon for Windows 8 doesn't really do much else. There's no way to change the background image for the Windows 8 start menu. You'll be stuck with the default themes that Microsoft included.

While the quality of the photography in Chameleon for Windows 8 is great, the resolution left much to be desired. Photos loaded quickly but that's because they were compressed. Pictures look fuzzy and weren't displayed at the native resolution of our monitors. We wish that Chameleon for Windows 8 had a way to automatically download backgrounds at the native resolution of the screen.

Overall, Chameleon for Windows 8 provides a fun way to get fresh, interesting backgrounds for your lock screen but leaves much to be desired for the quality of the photographs.

Let’s move on to the recovery features in Acronis True Image. Creating bootable media ensures that you have an external solution to reboot your PC in case of a major breakdown. There are dozens of different filters to choose from in DreamLight Photo Editor and all are clearly divided into different categories. One of the best things about DreamLight Photo Editor is the fact that you can apply as many effects to the same image as you please, giving you the ability to get very creative (though, of course, it's easy to go overboard sometimes).

Annoyingly, the Undo feature in DreamLight Photo Editor only removes the last effect you applied, so we often found ouselves having to restart if the combination of filters we added didn't look right. Despite its name, DreamLight Photo Editor doesn't actually include any image editing tools, meaning that you'll still need to use an external graphics app to process any other changes after you've added the effects.

It's much easier to use than Photoshop, but if you have the Adobe app already then you certainly won't need DreamLight Photo Editor.

Funny Photo Maker is one of many apps that let you add some fun to your photos. Unfortunately, it's not one of the best.

Funny Photo Maker allows you to make amusing additions to your photos - or from one of two sexy ladies provided as an example. Simply click the + button and you'll be able add a number of image formats from your PC. You then need to select one of Funny Photo Maker's effects. These are divided into three categories - Frames, Face fun and Artistic.

In themselves, Funny Photo Maker's effects are pretty good. The frames are funny, there are a good selection of famous and amusing scenarios under Face fun, and the artistic effects - although basic - will keep you entertained. The problem, however, is that they are almost impossible to apply well.

Funny Photo Maker allows you to edit your images slightly so you can focus on the important parts of the photo, but it rarely maintains the edit when you add the effects. The same goes for when you don't edit the photo - there's no intelligent face ID here - it just plops the effect over your photo, changing the resolution however it sees fit. Although you can get lucky with a good match, most of the images are stretched and warped, and look terrible - even the ones included by the developer as an example!

If you want to have fun with your images, try Photo Frames & Effects, Pixlr-o-matic or Polarfox - they're all much better options.

Funny Photo Maker looks good in theory, but in practice, it is really badly finished and does nothing for your photos. Look elsewhere.
