Adobe Lightroom for Mac allows both professional and advanced photographers to import, store, organize, edit and export thousands of pictures from one uncluttered interface. You can create sets and collections to store your pictures and add tags to every individual photo. The timeline view at the bottom is a great way to quickly browse through pictures.

Editing tools are located on the right of the Adobe Lightroom for Mac interface. The Library section works wonders to adjust things like white balance, exposure or vibrancy quickly. For advanced editing you'll have to go to the Develop section though. This is where you'll be able to correct details, camera calibration, split toning and more. AAdobe Lightroom for Mac lets you create virtual copies so you can edit elements without affecting the original.

Adobe's photo management tool also includes a section to create your own slideshow, including transitions and overlays. Although it creates nice slideshows it feels a bit counter-intuitive. We also liked how in-depth the print settings were, letting you adjust things like margins or print resolution very precisely. The last section allows you to optimize your photos for the web and create a flash gallery and a postcard viewer among others. It includes integration with sites such as Faceback and Flickr although not Picasa and iPhoto.

Thanks to an excellent structure, advanced editing tools and features to print, publish to web and create a slideshow, Adobe Lightroom for Mac is one of the best photo management programs out there.

Aperture could be defined as 'iPhoto on steroids'. It's a complete photo organizer and viewer, easy enough for the amateur, but with the powerful tools that any advanced user would need. Plus it features a comfortable interface that hardly takes a few minutes to get used to.

Aperture lets you import images from various resources (including your photo camera), organize them in an intuitive way and optimize or fix them if necessary. When ready, sit back and enjoy them in a fullscreen slideshow, or use them in various creative projects such as a book, an album or a web gallery.

When I said Aperture was a bit like iPhoto, I wasn't exaggerating. This new version includes Faces, the popular facial recognition technology implemented in the last version of iPhoto. But Aperture goes a step beyond and also includes Places, another special technology that geolocates your images using the information stored in metadata by some cameras. However, I have to say that this feature wasn't working properly: the map took ages to load and controls were over-sensitive – which made map navigation a real pain. It even caused a program crash while testing it.

Besides these organizational features, Aperture includes a bunch of interesting tools to enhance your pics. You can tweak the image's balance, exposure, color and light values, levels and more with easy-to-use slides. The so-called Adjustment presets let you apply quick, frequent fixes to images in just two clicks. Finally, the all-new precision brushes help you fix the problem with extraordinary accuracy.

Other features in Aperture I found specially interesting were the possibility to share your images online in MobileMe, Facebook and Flickr right from the program, and to create printed copies of your photos – which always works as a nice present for grandma.

Aperture is an excellent photo application, there's no doubt about that. But in a way I felt disappointed when testing this new version. I expected to have more editing and drawing tools, and – why not – support for layers and masks. I found the controls uncomfortable and hard to manage, and my overall impression was one of disappointment.

GIMP has been around for over two decades and development has been stable over the years. The newest update for GIMP gives a slew of new features and a glimpse into the future for this incredible open source image editor.

Features

All the features of GIMP are still present. You can create your own images with tools for airbrushing, penciling, cloning, and creating gradients. Power users can create their own brushes and patterns to use later. GIMP also allows users to manipulate images imported into the program. You can crop, add text, resize, and create nested layers. There is even a way to animate your creations.

New additions

GIMP has now been updated with many user interface tweaks to make the application accessible to newbies. The biggest interface addition is the ability to edit in a single-window. GIMP versions of the past drew criticism for their confusing interfaces, but the developers are addressing many of these issues in this newest version. While single-window mode is great, it is also disappointing that there is no way to view multiple projects side by side.

Other updated features include easier text editing, nested layer groups, and a shift to using the Generic Graphics Library (GEGL), which is a more sophisticated image processing framework. GEGL was introduced a couple of years back in a developer version and has now made its way into the sable, consumer version. GIMP developers hope to move entirely to GEGL by version 2.10. One of the major advantages of GIMP using GEGL is the ability for non-destructive editing and high bit-depth images.

GIMP now only saves to its own XCF format to retain layers and other file manipulation information. Users can still choose to save in formats like JPEG and PNG but will have to "export" the project instead of saving. This follows in the footsteps of Adobe Photoshop.

Mac users will be happy to know that GIMP 2.8.2 is the first version of the program to run natively in OS X, without requiring the installation of X11. This takes one annoying step out of the installation process.

The latest GIMP is better than ever. Its developers are taking the user experience into serious consideration and are speeding up development for this already great photo editor.

Although photo software such as iPhoto and Picasa have made making photo slideshows much easier, they're not dedicated tools for the task. Neither handle videos well either when it comes to slideshows and presentations.

PulpMotion however does and allows you to create professional looking and engaging photo-video slideshows that will breathe new life into any photo and video collection. PulpMotion does a lot of the hard work for you by including a number of visual themes with which to work with. Your own media is organized down the right side of the interface and the timeline runs along the bottom very much like a video editor.

To create your own animations, simply drag and drop elements onto the main interface in the same way as you would in iMovie. When you're ready, you need to export it and PulpMotion provides options to do so via Mail, exporting to QuickTime, publishing to a website using iWeb, uploading it onto an iPhone or even creating a personal screensaver with it. Alternatively, you can publish it as a standalone media player that anyone should be able to watch on their machine.

The great thing about PulpMotion is that it does a lot of the hard work for you by providing some impressive themes, automatically syncing music. pacing the presentation etc. The interface tries to pack a lot in meaning it does feel a bit cluttered at times but this is a minor drawback on what otherwise is an excellent application.

Overall though, PulpMotion is an excellent multimedia presentation tool that will make your multimedia shows very impressive.

This little app is great – it looks good and adds fun, easy effects to your photos. It’s also got basic editing tools, so with a bit of time and effort, you can really make some fantastic art out of your images.

This means you shouldn't expect Pinta to be some kind of open source Photoshop clone. It does include some interesting features like support for layers, unlimited undo and redo, and a bunch of special filters and effects to spice up your images – but its nothing like a serious photo editor. It does, however, include a nice selection of drawing tools that can make Pinta a good choice as photo editor.

iPhoto offers fairly basic photo editing options but to really impress with your images, you can´t do much better than Adobe Photoshop Elements.

Adobe Photoshop Elements integrates seamlessly with Adobe Bridge CS5 software and provides instant organization of your images. Most importantly, it also includes a custom viewing workspace and full-screen previews and locating images is made easier thanks to tagging options.

Previously, Adobe Photoshop Elements lacks some of the more advanced features available in Windows but version 10 means that it now includes all of the intelligent photo-editing options as found the Windows version. Particular features worth noting are Photomerge Exposure, Recompose and Quick Fix previews and an excellent Scene Cleaner for brushing away unwanted elements from images. The Scene Cleaner also allows you to touch-up photos such as whitening teeth or intensifying colors to give your images a true professional touch.

There are very few downsides to Adobe Photoshop Elements although it can be very slow to open. However, when it finally does open, all actions are performed at lightening speed. Version 9 has also addressed many of the drawbacks from the previous version including the ability to quickly share photos and videos on Facebook and support for Mac multitouch. The new Photomerge technology also allows you to take the best of two photos to create an improved image.

The only issues some users have with Adobe Photoshop Elements is that Adobe still don't issue incremental updates for it.

Overall, Adobe Photoshop Elements is a superb photo editing application that offers all the power you need to create stunning professional results.
