This little application lets you adjust a photo and focus on a specific area, to then crop out what you don't want.

iZoom comes with almost a dozen preset sizes, which for most people will be just what they need. These go from iPod Photo to thumbnail, desktop background or email portrait. Select one of the presets, load in your photo and adjust it. All you then need to do is crop.

You can also create your own custom cropping profile thanks to the size and quality tools at the bottom left.

These, and that is my general gripe with the program, are fairly limited. iZoom lets you crop photos but nothing more. The editing features are restricted and there aren't any more settings you can play on.

The applications is slightly limited, yet iZoom makes for a quick cropping tool.

Download iZoom in Softonic

The application allows you to activate or deactivate features in all of your Mac's applications, like the Finder, Spotlight or Photo Booth. You can also view the settings for the different volumes mounted on your Mac, set applications to start up at login, manage power usage or lock specific files.

Activating a feature simply is a case of checking a box and luckily, every feature is explained so that you know what you are doing. If there is a feature that you feel is missing you can always suggest it to Koingosw, the developer.

Although Mac Pilot is easy to work with, we recommend using it only if you know what you are doing. It's very easy to start checking and unchecking features until you've forgotten what you've changed. Luckily, you can verify the logs in the program to verify all the changes you performed.

If you use Mac Pilot in a responsible way, you'll be able to tweak features in your Mac and improve how it performs.

Download Mac Pilot 3.1 in Softonic

Whether you are adding images to your documents, editing offline images, or posting photos to the web for others to see, ImageWell will do the work for you.

Drag images in and out of the well, resize, crop, shape, rotate and add a watermark, border, or drop shadow. No need to launch multiple applications to add text, labels, arrows, circles and squares to your image. Add a thought cloud or talking balloon. A few simple clicks, copy, paste, and send them off to your web server instantly. At the click of a button the image is sent and a handy URL is copied to the clipboard.

Don't want to send the image to the web? You don't have to, it's not the law. Edit your image, give it a name and file type, and simply drag and drop the image to the desired destination on your computer to save it there. Or drag and drop it into another document or presentation.

Do you hate having to open up Photoshop just to design an icon? Gluestick is a small graphics editor that web designers will find extremely useful to prepare interface and icon designs.

The application lets you add two types of layers, text and image, and features a complete template set of Apple icons to work with ranging from accounts to alerts or folders. Open up the inspector window to set options like position, size, color, shadow and zoom. Your layers can be resized and Gluestick lets you really zoom in onto your picture so you can edit the details.

Although Gluestick offers many editing tools, I wouldn't consider it a proper graphics editor like Pixelmator though. The inclusion of icon templates and the fact that images are handled via layers makes it really ideal for designing interfaces and icons for Mac. The fact that it renders in CoreAnimation also ensure that your images look even crisper on a Mac desktop.

The GIMP 2.2.11

The Gimp is the open source reference in image manipulation. This free application will allow you to retouch, author and edit your photos thanks to a wide set of tools.

Let’s quickly go through what you can do with the Gimp. The painting function has the essential clone, airbrush or pencil tools and a powerful gradient and blend tool. You can also create and save your own brushes and patterns for later use. The program lets you manipulate your photos, adding layers, doing Bezier and polygonal selections or setting text. Load and save animations in a frame-as-layer format and batch process all your photos for quick editing. The multi-windowed interface can be moved around to fit your needs and resized according to your desktop space.

What’s more, the Gimp can be expanded with over 100 different plug-ins and extensions available on the Gimp’s website. These apply in majority for layer effects such as render, distort or blur and make a great addition to the ones already present in the program.

While the Gimp is user friendly, the installation process can result a bit hairy. Because the application works under the GTK Runtime Environment, you will have to install this kit to successfully launch the program. The process is fairly lengthy and some error messages tend to pop up, however if you persist, you will be able to install the Gimp properly on your PC

Despite this fairly hazardous installation process, the Gimp is a program we recommend. Whether you’re out of dough or are looking for a free alternative to Photoshop, the Gimp is excellent image manipulation software with all the tools you’d expect. The friendly interface and expandability make this a program of choice.

Download The GIMP 2.2.11 in Softonic

Mailplane 1.6.1

Mailplane was created back in the days when IMAP support wasn't around in Gmail and you wanted to access your Gmail account from your desktop.

Nowadays you can consult Gmail from any mail client like Mail.app or Thunderbird. However, some users might like turning to Mailplane, which is specifically built for Gmail.

Fitted with a mail client interface, Mailplane displays your Gmail page in its main window. At the top of the interface you get a number of actions like sending, printing, or replying and more Gmail specific actions like starring or archiving.

Mailplane also lets you use Google Talk and opens it up in a separate window, so it works just like a separate application on your Mac, something we've been waiting for for ages and that Google still hasn't introduced. You can also easily take screenshots or send any pictures from iPhoto automatically via Mailplane. We also liked how attachments can simply be dragged and dropped to any message.

Overall, Mailplane works seamlessly and really feels like a mail desktop client. Only just for Google. You can easily connect to multiple Gmail accounts and use Gmail actions straight from the interface. Yet, as expressed at the beginning of this review, I wonder about the relevance of such a program when Gmail has finally added IMAP support.

A great way to enjoy Gmail and all its features on your desktop, yet Mailplane remains more of a niche product than anything.

Download Mailplane 1.6.1 in Softonic

Add the images you want to edit, set the new size and it's all done. The application lets you keep the same image structure by letting you resize proportionally. You can also load multiple image and batch resize them. The interface of RapidoResizer looks sleek, and the top part of the tools window will show image details like file size and name. You can also go back to the original image settings just by clicking the button at the bottom of the interface.

RapidoResizer may not be the most advanced of applications, but it works like a charm. If there's one thing to complain about it would be how you can't look at multiple pictures all at once and instead have to browse through them one by one. We suggest using this program if you don't need to do any advanced editing on an image and just need a quick resizing.

RapidoResizer is great for quickly resizing loads of images and best of all it's completely free!

Download RapidoResizer 1.1.1 in Softonic

JetPhoto Studio will import pictures from your camera as soon as it is connected to your PC. We like how the main interface includes a calendar to let you browse photos by date. Jet Photo Studio has fairly basic editing tools, and functions like crop, sepia, black and white, image contrast, and auto enhancing, which will allow you to personalize your photos. You can also batch resize your photos and protect them with a watermark. JetPhoto Studio also allows you to rate photos by adding a star next to the ones you prefer. You can set tags to quickly identify related pictures, but annoyingly you’ll have to create new ones for each individual album.

Making screensavers, wallpapers and slide-shows is extremely easy and quick. You can also create two types of Flash movies, stand-alone or deluxe, the first being a typical slide show, and the second showing an animated thumbnail list of your selected images. The only downside is that you can’t set the types of animations and speed of transitions.

You can use JetPhoto Studio to send images, via MMS or infrared, to your friends’ mobiles, yet however exciting this sounds, the feature is not really up to standards. You’ll actually need to know your friend’s mobile brand and exact model and even if you do, there’s no telling whether the service will work in your country. We found that JetPhoto Studio did not support this feature in Spain. Another promising feature is locating photos thanks to GPS and tagging them on Google Earth.

JetPhoto Studio also allows you to quickly upload images to the online photo sharing service Flickr, and it’s very easy to order quality printed copies via PrintExpress. The JetPhoto Server tool is also a good way for anybody with some scripting knowledge to upload and edit their photo albums onto their weblog or personal website.

Jet Photo Studio lets you manipulate photos in all sorts of ways, however some of its functions are not up to standards.

Download JetPhoto Studio 3.0 in Softonic

PhotoComplete's intuitive photo editing interface allows you to concentrate on the job at hand, without getting in the way, yet still has the power and flexibility necessary to allow you to achieve professional quality results.

PhotoComplete's unique all-in-one-window interface lets you concentrate on achieving the look you want in a photo without having to wade through a sea of pop-up windows or a myriad of confusing options.

Choose from a selection of different actions that may be used to edit a photo. Each action remains editable at all times - if you change your mind about something at any point, just change it - no need to worry about losing any other edits you've applied before or after.

All the standard photo editing features you'd expect to find, such as crop and resize, color and contrast enhancement, and sharpening are present, along with some welcome extras like noise reduction which you'd normally only find in much more expensive applications.

PhotoComplete's easy to use features don't come at the expense of quality. All the editing operations are performed using 16-bit data (instead of the 8-bits that most editors use), and the high quality color management ensures that what you see on the screen really is what you get.

Once you've got a photo looking how you want it, save it in one of the standard formats (JPEG, TIFF or PNG) or upload it to flickr.com to share it with your family and friends.

Download PhotoComplete 1.2.2 in Softonic

Want to create an original photo album out of them? You can use scrapbooking software like iRemember. The application lets you drag and drop your photos, arrange them how you like and then share the created scrapbook in many different ways.

iRemember is a great tool for beginners as it offers a friendly interface and is pretty straightforward. The editing tools are not incredibly advanced but allow you to do the essentials, like coloring, adding lines, text and shapes. Surprisingly though, you won't be able to flip images horizontally or vertically. Because it's built specifically for this, it's much easier to use than a traditional screen capture application. Just configure the program, launch the Mac DVD Player and then take your shots. You can grab one image or decide to create a sequence, by setting the time interval. DVD Snap can bet set from 0.5 to 600 seconds intervals.

The application stores and numbers your shots, making them easy to find and exports to a number of image formats, including JPEG, PNG or GIF. The program window is very discreet and can be resized so it doesn't obstruct you when playing back the DVD.

DVD Snap works flawlessly with the Mac DVD Player, a huge plus but also it's only true limitation. We would have loved to see it being associated to any other media player and not just to DVDs, as you may want to take shots from other movie formats. That said you're sure to get an excellent image quality from a DVD.

PhotoZoom uses its own S-Spline XL developed technology to perform the task. Fitted with simple yet powerful tools in a slightly bloated interface, the application gives you many ways to zoom in and change the size of your image. After you've opened a picture in PhotoZoom, you can rotate, flip and crop it until satisfied with its arrangement.

From the side menu on the left you can easily zoom in and browse onto your image thanks to the navigation box and set the size in different metric settings. However the more interesting features are the resize methods and new sizes. PhotoZoom offers 11 different resize methods including bi-cubic, bilinear and mitchell. You can also adjust image size to specific TV settings like NTSC or Pal, HDV or desktop for your computer. PhotoZoom even includes a very thorough list of print presets such as envelope, sheet or tabloid. These come in very handy if you know exactly what you want to use your image for.

Overall, we were satisfied with the application's performances. One little nag we had with it though was the slightly bloated interface, which you could have been better structured.

The Apple notes program is good but fairly limited. Stick ‘Em Up is much more advanced and allows you to do more with your notes.

In Stick ‘Em Up you can create notes of all sorts of colors and resize them or move them around anywhere on your screen. Stick ‘Em Up lets you store notes in categories. You'll find a little categories window that lets you view notes by category and create as many new entries as you want.

Stick ‘Em Up does not limit you to plain text. You can choose font and color, enter links and photos in your notes. This gives you much more possibilities.

If you right click (or CTRL-click) on any text a menu of various options appears. Text can be searched in both Spotlight and Google (a choice of other search engines would have been nice), and looked up in your Mac's dictionary.

This little application integrates perfectly with iPhoto, which means you can browse all your iPhoto lists, folders and rolls straight from the application's interface. To resize an image, just select the number of pixels you want and use the little slider to adjust the quality of the image.

We quite liked how you could tweak the frames set on pictures. Select thickness, color and corner radius and even adjust the shadow. Similarly, a watermark can be applied to any area of your picture (although it seems text can only be placed on one line) and you can control its opacity via a little slider.

How do I check these changes I've done to my image, you might ask. Not to worry, Downsize features a preview window that you can consult any time to see what those changes will look like.

Downsize is not highly advanced, but if you want to resize, frame and quickly watermark a picture then it should be what you're looking for.

Download Downsize 2.7 in Softonic

SmallImage may not be as famous as other image processors but it performs as well as the best of them. Behind a fairly rudimentary interface lies an extremely useful program. You can quickly resize and recompress as many images as you want, and will always maintain almost the same image quality. Profiles and icons can be kept or removed in the process and you can also set recompression quality thanks to a useful slide bar. Details of your photos are accessible from the side window.

Adding or removing files is extremely easy to do and you can quickly shuffle through them to preview them before and after the change. SmallImage is very useful if you work on the web and need to adapt images to a specific page. The program will ensure that your images stay of excellent quality, whichever size you choose.

SmallImage is an excellent application to resize images with little quality loss.

Download SmallImage 2.0.6 in Softonic

FlickrShop aims to unite two of the most popular applications for modern photographers: on one side the online photo storage site and on the other Adobe's excellent image editing application. We found FlickrShop very much streamlines the process of editing and putting your photos online. Once you've finished working on an image in Photoshop all you have to do is call up the plug-in from the menu bar.

FlickrShop saves you some time by letting you add elements like title, description and even tags for Flickr. You can add an image to a particular photoset or create a new one. We also liked how you can set the privacy level and share it only with your family for example. FlickrShop also has limited resizing pictures, which you should for particularly big photos.

FlickrShop is an ingenuous little plugin. While it lacks batch processing and can take some time to upload photos to Flickr, it's a great combination of two great services.

Download FlickrShop 1.0 in Softonic
