For me, the feature which best sums up the PlayStation's impressive multimedia capabilities is its membership of the DLNA (Digital Living Network Alliance). This means that the PS3 can communicate and share content with a large number of other networked devices. And although Apple aren't members of the DLNA, several companies have been working to enable streaming of multimedia content from Macs to the PS3. Nullriver's MediaLink is the newest kid on the block.

MediaLink works in a similar way to its competitors, acting as a file server which allows you to stream multimedia files, including your iTunes and iPhoto libraries across your home network. Your PS3 detects the server, connects and the shared content shows up in the XMB (PS3 menu).

When compared with its competitors, notably Elgato's EyeConnect, MediaLink performs very well. I experienced no cuts in transmission or delays, and I was impressed to see better handling of iTunes artwork as well as video previews. Some DivX files which worked with other media servers weren't detected by MediaLink, which was disappointing. I think this was due to the files having the '.divx' format and I expect that this issue will fixed in time. That said, video playback generally works without issues, though image quality was not always as good as when using EyeConnect.

Browsing photo and music libraries is a breeze with MediaLink, though there are some interesting differences with competitors in the way that it presents the iTunes library. I noticed that EyeConnect always displays the iTunes library exactly as iTunes would (select an artist, then an album and you'll see tracks by that artist which feature on that album), while MediaLink seems to use a different indexing system (select an artist and then an album and you'll see all the tracks on that album, irrespective of artist) - this suggests that MediaLink is building its own index of files rather than relying on your iTunes library file.

MediaLink is a robust, reliable media server option for sharing content from your Mac to your PS3, and compares well to other apps in its class. Recommended.

The name says it all about Facebook Exporter for iPhoto. This application lets you work straight from your iPhoto library and decide which photos you'll share with your friends on your Facebook account.

All you need to do is select the photos you want to share and click on 'Export' in your iPhoto menu. In the Facebook Exporter window you'll first have to log in to your Facebook account, then select whether to create a new album or add the photos to an existing one.

What I liked in Facebook Exporter is that you can easily add captions to your pictures and tag friends. To do this just move the little square onto a person in the photo and type in their name.

Once your pictures are ready all it takes is to press the 'Export' button. You'll still have to open up your Facebook account though as the uploaded photos will only be set as pending, until you approve of them in your account. A good way of ensuring the right photos are uploading yet it makes the processing a little longer.

Facebook Exporter for iPhoto makes it easy to upload your favorite pictures onto your Facebook account.

Managing files with the Finder in Mac OS X is pretty damn good in my opinion (certainly better than Windows) although that's not to say it can't be improved.

File Sheriff aims to do this by making file management easier and quicker than normal. For instance, it allows you to easily generate icon previews, rename your MP3 files based on their ID3 tags, batch-apply file attributes, edit hidden file options, amongst many other functions.

One of the simplest tasks it will help you with is renaming. File Sheriff is especially useful when it comes to renaming MP3 files that have not been labeled correctly. File Sheriff can automatically rename MP3s based on their ID3 tags (basically the name that appears in iTunes) so that the file name corresponds with the tag. In addition, it's excellent for finding and replacing files and folders which have been labeled wrongly or have gone missing (although Spotlight is as good as anything out there where this is concerned in my opinion).

In addition to all this, File Sheriff also allows you to create your own icons - you can take images and use them to represent your video, photo and other related files. The editor isn't exactly extensive but it allows basic icons to be made.

File Sheriff is an excellent tool for those Mac users who feel that Mac OS doesn't go far enough in helping them manage files.

FFXporter is a little add on for iPhoto with which you can quickly export your photos to Flickr.

Now the Flickr Uploadr is usually the weapon of choice to upload and send your photos onto the Flickr online service. Yet with FFXporter you can export them to Flickr straight from iPhoto. Once the plugin is installed and you've selected the photos to upload to the web, click export from the iPhoto menu bar and choose the FFXporter tab. You'll have to enter your login username and password for Flicrk.

Although not as advanced as Flickr Uploadr, it lets you adjust a number of settings like the safety level, who can see your pics, content type, size and whether or not to hide from public areas. Once you're done setting up, just click export to send them to Flickr. This can take some time if you've selected a lot of photos.

You can organize photos by photosets, but unfortunately FFXporter only lets you tag photos with rating. In this sense, you'll probably have to enter Flickr anyways to add tags to all your newly uploaded photos.

Despite limited tagging features, FFXporter is a simple little plugin to upload all your pics from iPhoto to Flickr.

The Free Flickr eXporter iPhoto Plugin lets you send your pictures from your iPhoto library straight to your Flickr account. A number of similar applications have popped up all around, filling in a missing feature in the iPhoto application.

So what would make you choose Free Flickr eXporter iPhoto Plugin over another similar app? First of all it's free, and very simple to install. Free Flickr eXporter iPhoto Plugin is accessible from the Export section in iPhoto. You can start using it as soon as you are logged in.

Free Flickr eXporter iPhoto Plugin lets you set the typical restrictions, such as whether to show to only family or friends. You can also set the safety level and content type. An added security measure is to hide pics from public areas.

Hydra makes HDR photography accessible to anyone.

Thought it was difficult to create HDR snaps without an expensive SLR camera? Simply looking for a simple tool to do some tone-mapping? The newly released Hydra allows you to take up to four photos of different exposure and match them to create impressive HDR snaps.

Drag and drop your pictures onto the screen and select the matching function from the drop down pane on the right. If you've taken all pictures with a tripod you can match them automatically. For most cases we suggest doing it manually though. You'll have to select different points on one of the pictures and with the zoomed preview screens at the bottom adjust all images until they're perfectly aligned. This can be a little tricky.

Once you've matched your pictures it's time to blend them. Hydra does this particularly well. Thanks to a little histogram view and sliders you can adjust your HDR image until it has all the shadows, light and detail that you're looking for. When that's done you can export your image to the Hydra format or Jpeg.

Hydra is very intuitive to use and has a very sleek, dark grey Leopard interface. The major downside though is that it only takes up to four photos, when you'll probably want at least five images to produce an excellent HDR photo. In all, we really hope that the good people at Creaceed also offer up Hydra as a Photoshop plugin, where it would probably be much more useful than as a standalone application.

Hydra is an intuitive tool to create HDR images out of images of four different exposures. Recommended if you want to learn tone mapping.

Feel like cropping pictures? iZoom gets the job done. This little application lets you adjust a photo and focus on a specific area, to then crop out what you don't want.

iZoom comes with almost a dozen preset sizes, which for most people will be just what they need. These go from iPod Photo to thumbnail, desktop background or email portrait. Select one of the presets, load in your photo and adjust it. All you then need to do is crop.

You can also create your own custom cropping profile thanks to the size and quality tools at the bottom left.

These, and that is my general gripe with the program, are fairly limited. iZoom lets you crop photos but nothing more. The editing features are restricted and there aren't any more settings you can play on.

The applications is slightly limited, yet iZoom makes for a quick cropping tool.

Most multimedia publishing programs only allow you to publish one type of format be it photos, video or audio - Gallery Designer allows you to publish all 3 at once and does all the HTML coding for you.

Everything is explained and taken step by step until your gallery is online with no further effort required on your part. To get going, first of all you're asked which image files you want to upload. Secondly, you're asked what title you want to give the album and the layout parameters - how big, what style etc. Then, you simply click "Build" and the software whizzes into action building a perfect HTML gallery, complete with thumbnails, for publishing on the net.

Once ready, you are given detailed control over exactly how you want the gallery to look such as by changing the thumbnails to full image size, the titles, layout gallery style, border colors etc. If you see another gallery online that you like developed using Gallery Designer, you can even borrow that template or alternatively, design your own.

With support for for a wide range of video and photo formats and even support for text files, Gallery Designer takes the pain out of coding your own online gallery.

Slideshows are one of the best ways to add colour and life to a photo collection no matter what the subject matter.

Slideshow Magic is aimed at both home users and business professionals who want to impress friends or colleagues with their photo slideshow creations. Best of all, it doesn't require the viewer to have the program installed as all slideshows can be saved in any QuickTime compatible format.

The easy to use interface is somewhat like that of a video editor allowing you to add music or audio tracks either for the whole slideshow or just specific segments. You can add some impressive transitions and titles much in the same way as you do with Windows Movie Maker for example. The program also features a useful guide to help you get your photos online or burnt to DVD. However, unfortunately the program doesn't provide either it's own webspace or burner for uploading and saving photos. For uploading, you'll need an FTP client and web host and for burning, a third party burner such as Nero.

In addition, although it's a cross platform application, sharing with other platforms requires some form of network solution between clients (although this needn't be something complicated - a program like MSN Live Messenger is enough

Slideshow Magic is a relatively cheap but powerful way to get your photos either online or burnt to DVD.

Geotagging is easily one of the more exciting recent technologies that we can work with. Thanks to the latitude and longitude data of your photos you can place them on a map.

Maperture is a nifty Aperture plugin which gives you geotagging features in Google Maps. It will automatically place pictures that already have the necessary EXIF data. For other pictures, all you need to do is select them, then find their location in Google maps and place a little tag there. If the tag is moved around then latitude and longitude information is automatically updated.

Google Maps is very efficient in some areas, like North America and Europe, and lesser in others. You might not always be able to locate precisely some pictures.

The plugin is easy to install and access from the Aperture menu.

iMedia makes it easier to browse all your media from one simple interface. The application can show your photos, videos, music and bookmarks found in your Mac's folders. The top of the interface shows the different folders, which you can open up via a drop down arrow to reveal subfolders. The main part shows a preview of all files in a folder. We quite like the sliding bar, which allows you to easily zoom in and out of files. You can also drag and drop any file that you wish to see in iMedia Browser.

We found that iMedia cleverly manages to unite all media files under one interface. And yet, we sometimes felt that browsing movies or music in the application was not all intuitive. For some file types it just seems more natural to browse from separate applications like iTunes for music. Because iMedia fits all your media files in one place, it can feel a bit cluttered. However some people will find this much more useful to browse through their files quickly and get preview of what is on their Mac.

All in all, iMedia Browser is a useful program to view all your media files from one place.

Cha-Ching is a fun and easy to use money manager, done Mac OS X style. A tag based database lets you organize and search for your incoming and outgoing transactions your way. Vector drawing is almost an art in itself, and something that takes time to master. VectorDesigner is a good program both for those looking to learn all about and others who already have some experience with the technique.

VectorDesigner offers a simple, multi-windowed interface from which you can use all sorts of tools and shapes like rectangles, stars, polygons or bezier creations. Boolean tools offered by the program are easy to work with and let you combine your different shapes in all sorts of ways. Vector drawing is perfect for creating posters, stickers, t-shirts...anything onto which you can apply a design. VectorDesigner takes this into account and lets you constrain text to any shape.

The program includes many filters and compositions, however some effects will only work if you're running Mac OS X 10.5. One element we did enjoy was the Flickr browser tool, by which you can find images in the photo sharing site.

VectorDesigner gives anybody the chance to work with vector drawings and create great looking designs thanks to powerful tools and effects.

Remote Buddy gives you a refreshing look at your media files on your Mac. Thanks to a sleek interface, you'll be able to browse through all your video, music photos and do much more. Remote Buddy also supports an impressive array of other hardware like the Apple Remote, and many mobile devices of which the latest additions are the iPhone and the iPod Touch. We also really liked how the program has an interface for each device.

Remote Buddy is fully customizable and you can change just about anything, like mapping buttons or creating your own actions. We really liked how you can create behaviors for each application, although this might be a bit too complex for inexperienced users. Thanks to its integrated file browser its very easy to look for files, although you may sometimes have to go back to the root folder. Overall an excellent program that boosts the remote control features of your Mac, whether you want to make presentations or just play any sort of media.

Remote Buddy is a top notch application to present and enjoy files on any sort of device.

If you’ve ever had to publish, send or receive particularly large files sizes, you’ll know that it can throw up all kinds of problems – crashed servers, blocked inboxes and transfers that suddenly just hang-up. Pando aims to take the pain out of this process and according to the developers, 3 million people agree that it does exactly that.

Pando is based on a P2P network that enables you to send files of up to 1GB in size by e-mail or by publishing it to the web. It supports all multimedia file types including video, audio and photos meaning it’s great for people who deal with audio-visual files regularly.

For most users, the major benefit will be with e-mail attachments and the good news is, there's no need to change your existing e-mail client. Pando works by creating a torrent-like link file which you can then send in the body of your e-mail for the recipient to click on. There’s no need to be online when the recipient downloads the file and there’s no compression, FTP or dodgy web uploading applets to deal with. The reason you don’'t need to be online is because Pando sends files to its "super-node" servers, which means that there's always at least one "seeder" online at any given time. This seed is guaranteed for 14 days so even if you log off, your recipient can still view it. Obviously, the more people that share it too, the faster the download.

For those unfamiliar with FTP, Pando is fantastic since it works on the same principle as a Bittorrent client. Once the small interface is opened, you can drag and drop or select “add-file” to create a ".pando” file which you can then e-mail to whoever you want once it is uploaded.

The main drawback is that the recipient has to have Pando installed to receive the file. If you transfer files to someone regularly, this is not a problem but if it’'s just the odd file you want to send, then it could be a nuisance to ask someone to install it just to see your file. Be warned also that Pando cannot guarantee security although the developers assure that Pando has 256bit AES end-to-end encryption built in making it technically one of the most secure ways to transfers files online today. The only way that someone could realistically compromise your security however is by hacking into your e-mail account.

Whilst Pando is obviously open to abuse by sharing illegal files, most people go to the major Torrent sites to do that, meaning Pando is refreshingly free of any copyrighted material flying around and causing problems. Overall, it’'s a great solution for those unfamiliar with FTP who need to send big files regularly.

With Jade you can quickly enhance your pictures without actually having to work with a full fledged image editing program. You just drag and drop your pictures into the interface and can zoom in the image smoothly using your mouse.

If you click the 'Parameters' button on the top right you'll open the 'Filter Settings' (oddly not called 'Parameters') which consist of a few sliders for intensity, sharpness and fill light. You can also add color correction and contrast enhancement. Of all the effects, intensity was the one to yield the most effects. Others were not as apparent.

Overall, the parameters offered in Jade are pretty basic. This application is really meant to be used if you are looking to only add a few enhancements. As the developer says, it can be handy to quickly batch process a large amount of images, although you'll find that photo management programs like iPhoto offer similar functions.
