There are few examples of Apple software that are inferior to Microsoft products but it has to be said, Microsoft Word still has the edge on Pages.

However, that gap is getting smaller and smaller and Pages is a fantastic word processing application that's slowly winning hearts. Although it can take some getting used to if you've used Word all your life, once you get the grip of it it is easy to use, relatively inexpensive (it can now be purchased separately or comes as part of the iWork suite) and as expected from an Apple product, the graphic design features are second to none.

Unfortunately, Pages still lacks basics such as a grammar checker although the truth is that the grammar checker in Word is rarely useful anyway only offering subtle changes that don't really make much difference to the meaning of a phrase or sentence. Where it certainly excels over Word is for graphics - many users prefer it for designing posters, adding tables and just about anything where graphics are concerned.

It may not quite be up to MS Word but Pages is slowly getting there and future releases will surely see it address the few issues that remain to make it a truly great word processor.

If you're looking for a clean and yet powerful Usenet newsreader for Mac then you might find Unison an interesting option.

Unison offers everything you'd expect from a quality reader such as threaded discussions, blocking of annoying or nuisance posters, multiple signature management and of course, spell checking. What makes Unison a bit different from your average client however is a four-sided interface that allows you to view and work with Usenet group content in four different ways namely messages, files, images, or music.

You can store files into groups, create favorites, and thread messages. The advanced search can be coupled with rules to better organize files and Unison's download manager lets you handle multiple downloads, reorganize your queue plus pause and launch items based on their priority.

However, there are several instability issues with Unison which still haven't been fixed since the last release. It is prone to random crashes and the image display seems to crash frequently. It also prone to freezing when uploading files. It´s also not particularly clear how you can mark items as read which leads to a lot of confusion when scrolling through posts.

Unison is a slick reader but it needs to iron out several glaring problems before it's something you can rely on.

Its a technique that's often used in posters to stunning effect and iSplash makes you look like you're a pro when it comes to modifying images in the same style. iSplash supports PNG, JPEG, GIF, TIFF and BMP files and is extremely easy to use.

To edit a photo, simply launch iSplash, choose a photo using the file browser, or select one of the images that has been automatically imported from iPhoto. iSplash will automatically turn the image to gray and then you can select different aspects of the photo to turn to color.

Adding special effects to your photos can breathe new life into them, create a great gift for someone, or just be a hell of a lot of fun.

ImageLobe offers more than forty special effects that you can apply extremely quickly and have a lot of fun with in the process. Using it couldn't be easier. Simply drag an image into the ImageLobe interface, select one of the effects to apply from the panel at the bottom (use the arrows to scroll through them), and then drag the photo out of ImageLobe to save your changes.

Using ImageLobe is far easier than trying to apply filters (such as in Photoshop) because it does all the hard work for you. If you've ever used Photo Booth, then it works on the same principle as that, except there are far more effects to choose from, albeit some of them are very similar. Some of the best include Line Overlay, Posterize and Bulge. Rather than scroll through them all using the arrows, you can also click 'Open Effects' to bring-up a scroll menu instead. You can also activate your iSight to take photos of yourself that you can then apply effects to.

The only annoying thing about ImageLobe is the 300KB photo limit. Try to load any picture taken on anything more powerful than a phone camera and it will block you with a license purchase warning.

Whether it's breathing new life into images or just having a lot of fun adding cool effects, ImageLobe is a lot of fun.

Smoke allows you to edit everything from abstract backgrounds to lighting texts in order to turn your ideas into polished bitmap creations. Sparkbooth more or less configures itself - it detects your iSight camera and starts taking the photos when you hit the Space bar. It then automatically saves, prints or uploads them and the entire application follows the same format you'd find in a real photo booth.

You can also add a logo and background image to your photos to spice things up a bit. You can also customize the logo on the main screen although this isn't really anything special. Sparkbooth would probably be particularly fun at a wedding as a way for guests to snap themselves during the celebrations.
