First Impressions

First impressions of L.A. Noire were perhaps over enthusiastic, and the later release of the PC version allows us a more measured view of this interesting game. While it features the huge open world landscape of Los Angeles, L.A. Noire is no GTA sandbox. Rather, this is a game of detective episodes that take place within the city.

Dirty Work

As well as exploration, driving and shooting, Cole Phelps spends a great deal of time looking for clues at crime scenes, and interrogating suspects. Interrogations take advantage of the impressively realistic facial animations in the game. To succeed you need to read the faces of your potential criminals, which is a new experience for gamers. Looking for clues is a little more mundane, but there are subtle in-game pointers to make sure you don't get stuck. The stories are well written and acted, really giving L.A. Noire the feeling of an excellent interactive TV cop drama.

Flaws

There are problems with the game. L.A. Noire is very linear, and although you can do better or worse in interrogations and crime scene investigations, you cannot fail. The game will help you, with a phone call for example, to make sure Cole Phelps has what he needs to get the case moving. The city of Los Angeles is impressive, but doesn't have the 'living city' feel that GTA IV's Liberty City achieved. Playing L.A. Noire sometimes feels like exploring a huge replica of a city, not like actually being a cop in a city.

Conclusion

These criticisms shouldn't dissuade players. L.A. Noire is a deeply satisfying game with some interesting an innovative ideas. Humans faces have never looked so realistic, and the production values are excellent.

Waterworld

The year is 2070, and rising sea levels have made most of Earth uninhabitable, and unfortunately reminiscent of Kevin Costners' Waterworld. Anno 2070 mixes this nominal story with the classic city building and management gameplay that fans of the series will know. This demo lets you play the first two mission of the campaign, creating a settlement and completing tasks for your boss Mr Strindberg.

Graphics

The graphics in Anno 2070 are much improved, although while they are very detailed they aren't quite as polished as other real time strategy titles like Starcraft II. The sound is good, if a little uninspired. If you zoom in on settlements, you'll hear inhabitants expressing their feelings, but this quickly becomes repetitive.

Gameplay

The biggest problem with Anno 2070 is that it's a little tough to get into. These early missions are clearly tutorials of a sort, but there is actually not enough hand holding. Nevertheless, a little experimentation and persistence will get you through. Anno 2070 is still a pretty old fashioned game, despite the added polish. Fans of the series will enjoy it, but it may be a little archaic for younger gamers. Online multiplayer is coming in the full game, but we have yet to see how this will be handled.

Anno 2070 looks like being a detailed and engaging strategy game, although it's not as accessible as it could be.

After playing the closed beta of Diablo III, we feel that Blizzard has made something that will please fans and newcomers alike. Diablo fans will be right at home with the controls right from the start as there are no big changes.

Atmospheric

The graphic style is what you would expect from Blizzard, with well defined cartoon-like graphics that are full of detail. It's very atmospheric, and the environment looks great, with some nice touches like crows flying up out trees as you pass.

Gameplay

The beta isn't massively long, but it gives you a taste of how the game has been improved. The general feeling I got was one of smoothness - Diablo III is really slick, and everything just seems to work as it should. The sound is excellent, and visually it manages to be dark enough while keeping everything clear.

Once you've created your Hero, from the usual character classes, you are dropped right into New Tristram, a town that has just suffered a meteor strike that has resulted in the dead rising and attacking. This sets you up on a mission to find Deckhard Cain, who is trapped in the Cathedral.
