Watching television is no longer a dining-room activity. With the number of available online TV channels constantly increasing, chances are you'll end up watching TV on your computer rather than on a TV set.

Internet TV is the perfect tool to watch television on the PC. This free app gives you access to more than 5,000 TV channels that stream content over the Internet. Among such a wide offer you'll surely find something you like, from news to sports, from music to documentaries, from religion to education.

Using the program is a piece of cake. Simply select the channel you're interested in and click on the "Play" button on the right-side screen. After a few seconds of buffering, the show will start. I have to say most of the channels I tested worked perfectly fine and only a few failed to start, most of them when I tried to filter contents by country. Apparently it's better to just leave the "All countries" option enabled. Also, when a channel didn't work sometimes it showed music instead, so in the end it wasn't that disappointing.

Internet TV lets you add your own Internet TV channels, if you know any that's not currently on the list and provided you have all the necessary data. A Favorites list completes the array of included features.

anyTV lets you play TV channels and radio stations that stream their contents on the Internet. The program features a huge list of channels from hundreds of countries around the world.

The list is divided into TV channels, radio stations and videos, the latter being presumably videos from web pages about the most diverse topics. Lists can be filtered according to several topics and also arranged by rating, bitrate or genre. In spite of that, sometimes the channel list is difficult to manage especially when it's too long. One feature I missed, for example, is being able to jump to a certain part of the list by pressing its first letter on the keyboard.

anyTV looks very promising: a nice interface, hundreds of TV channels to watch and radio stations to listen to, a Favorites system, the possibility to rate channels… unfortunately while testing the program we found way too many channels that didn't work well or didn't even load at all. And what's worse, the program didn't show up any error message to let us know if we were missing any codec or other necessary component.

If you're planning to travel or just want the latest information on weather conditions in your local area, you'll need a decent weather tracker.

MyFreeWeather allows you to view the sky in any city in the world and track local weather. You can track a moving storm & weather patterns via satellite & radar although this can be painfully slow at updating. Naturally, you can also view daily and detailed forecasts, local time and date for any location worldwide, plus alerts for severe weather. To search, just enter the city and country and the program does the rest.

It's certainly a comprehensive weather tool - apart from all the aforementioned features, it also shows other information such as wind speed and direction, humidity and visibility, as well as a five-day forecast graphic with the maximum and minimum temperature. It would have been much better if the program was based on webcams pointing at the sky in each country because in reality, what you are seeing is a computer generated impression of what it should look like based on weather readings.

However, this is an attractive and detailed weather forecasts and tracker that provides all the info you'll need about any major location worldwide.

If you've ever wanted to have a look at foreign television broadcasts, just out of curiosity or to improve your language skills, now you have a chance to watch programs from Australia to Mexico and everywhere in between.

SuperTV’s interface is very basic (it consists of nothing more than a video window and a channel-selection sidebar). However, the variety of channels from all over the world is huge and, when all are working, is surely a plus in comparison to its competitors. We encountered problems in watching US and UK channels but the application didn't display any message to explain if the programs were not shown because of copyright reasons or because of temporary connection problems.

That said, the video streaming is very slow to start and the video quality is not as good as what you can get with other programs. It's nice though to browse around channels from all over the world, even if what you can get are mostly satellite channels, so not necessarily very representative of the television you could get in a specific country.

Unfortunately, not yet a substitute for your satellite subscription but it could be an interesting introduction to other countries’ TV channels.

If you need to regulate the amount of traffic or data running through your system, then without expensive network administration software, it can be tricky.

DU Meter is a free utility which includes an extensive logging facility, flexible events system, and it works with virtually all types of network connections including phone modems, DSL, cable modem, LAN and satellite. Watch over 853 television channels all over the world with TeleStreamer. The application streams all online video content that TV channels make available on the web. For each country then, you'll probably get satellite channels rather than the national ones, but you still have a really large choice, with many news channels in nearly all the languages in the world. It’s also a good way to have a general idea about how TV formats are elsewhere; bear in mind though that maybe you will not have access to the most popular programs.

The GUI is very simple and clear. There is a list of nationalities with TV channels associated and you just have to double click on the one you want to watch. Not all the programs will work, but this may also depend on the availability of the content provider’s server. When you manage to connect to a channel though, the sound and the video quality are fairly good and you can either watch the program in windowed mode or, by double-clicking on it, enjoy the full screen mode.

Unfortunately, it’s not possible to pause the stream, as the program doesn’t store data on your hard disk. It is a big limitation considering that it’s a very easy function to have on PCs and it’s the real plus in rapport to traditional broadcasted TV.

Although you can’t have any control when watching a program, TeleStreamer allows you to watch 853 channels all over the world, both to practice your language skills and to see what’s going on in Africa, Iraq or Suriname, if you know where that is.

Google Earth Pro is the professional version of Google Earth. It's downloaded upon registration on its website and adds some extra features to the free version. Do these additional functions make a difference? Let's dig a bit deeper.

Making use of a vast satellite imagery database –actually the same as the free version, Google Earth Pro displays locations from all over the world, enabling you to zoom in from the image of the whole planet to the streets of any capital city. As a Pro version user, you're supposed to enjoy a faster performance, but we couldn't really notice any difference.

Another interesting feature included in the Pro version is the ability to record videos with your movements around the world, which you can use to illustrate trips or even give directions. You can choose different resolutions, but record only in WMV format.

Technical support assistance, Premium print and a GID data importer are other additional capabilities of this Pro version. However, taking into account that both versions share the same image database, which in the end is Google Earth's biggest value, you may as well use the free version.

Have you ever wanted to watch television programs from all over the world? With Online Live you can not only do that, but also easily select films, documentaries and radio channels.

It contains an impressive database of contents you can watch, but for many films and documentaries, you need to pay a subscription fee. Television channels are freely available though. We would have expected to find all the most well known world channels, but there are only mostly satellite TV channels.

The platform on which the videos are shown is in Windows Media Player, and the program guides you to install the plug-in in case you missed it. The full screen mode, is just a double-click away.
Moving onto the usability side, Online Live improved a lot from the previous version. The general design is nicer and it render more pleasant the whole experience. There is no "go-back" button in the application which doesn't ease things. The right click is disabled and while watching a video, there is no pause button!

It's interesting to have a look at all these channels, but you need a very good high-speed Internet connection to enjoy them properly.

SkyOrb could be defined as a domestic planetarium, a space simulator that enables you to travel around the Solar System without leaving the comfort of your computer.

The only downside to having a planetarium at home is that you're the one in charge of it. SkyOrb is not easy to configure, although you may as well leave every option as it is. In any case, some knowledge of astronomy is advisable, especially since the program doesn't include a help section.

The main space view window is quite intuitive: you can move around with the mouse and zoom in and out planets, satellites and other celestial elements, although it doesn't really show any more detail. Also, it feels awkward not to be able to zoom with the mouse wheel.

Not content with monopolizing the search world, Google is now busy making a splash in several other areas including, rather bizarrely, 3D design. Tradtionally, 3D modelling software commands a pretty high price and SketchUp aims to provide a basic alternative to industry mainstays like 3DSMax and Cinema4D – for free.

3D illustration can be a complex affair, but SketchUp keeps things as simple as possible, making for a far less daunting experience than you’ll get with many professional 3D apps. Technical jargon is kept to a minimum. For instance, the ‘Extrude’ tool is renamed to the more obvious ‘Push/Pull,’ and there are countless other examples.

The hand-holding doesn’t stop there, as the program features some rather helpful guide-snapping when you draw rectangles, and circles. For those unfamiliar with drawing in a 3D plane this is a god-send as the program helps you find the end and middle points of lines and squares and tells you if you’re on the right track. The program is able to predict where you want endpoints to meet and snaps them shut for you, saving lots of time.

In terms of its toolset, SketchUp comes with pretty much the usual collection of drawing and filling tools, neatly gathered within a left-hand toolbar. Other options can be accessed via the menu system, or you can choose to place extra palettes on the workspace to save wading through menus. Of particular note is the ‘Materials’ palette, which contains over 100 different preset swatches, such as vegetation, metal and glass. The Shadow Settings palette is also worth keeping to hand, as it allows you to apply realistic shadows via simple sliders.

As Google’s software portfolio matures we’re starting to see more and more integration between its products and we like the way that you can export models you create in SketchUp into Google Earth. Once you’ve done that, you can send images of your 3D designs mapped on satellite through email or upload to free storage space at Google’s 3D Web Warehouse.

There are few flaws within the program but perhaps the most annoying arrives when extruding curves. It becomes quite difficult to realise domed surfaces because of the cumbersome nature of the Extrude tool, although pushing and pulling straight lines is considerably easier.

Although it lacks some of the advanced features of many of its heavyweight rivals, Google SketchUp provides a refreshingly simple approach to 3D graphic design and modelling. This makes it perfect for anyone who’s thinking of dabbling but doesn’t want to shell out a fortune to start with, and doesn’t have an intimate knowledge of CAD technology.
