Sonic & All-Stars Racing Transformed

Sonic & All-Stars Racing Transformed is Sega's answer to Mario Kart, and now available for PC and Mac. More than a kart-clone, it's an excellent racing game, with fantastic looking tracks and a huge range of Sega characters driving alongside some cameo appearances.

This is a game that achieves being both a really fun and deep karting game, and possibly the best monument to Sega's rich gaming history. As well as the big range of characters, the beautiful tracks exist in stunning recreations of Sega worlds gone by. As well as Sonic inspired environments, there's Monkey Ball, Afterburner, Shinobi and more.

Races themselves are great fun. Tracks changes during races, allowing for Sonic & All-Stars Racing Transformed's cars to transform into boats or planes. Handling is what it should be, with powerslides playing a big part in proceedings. Boats face big waves, while flying offers you plenty of freedom. Pickups are well balanced, although just like Mario Kart, sometimes you'll feel victimized by the computer players. All the tracks are hugely imaginative and really engaging, and they are well designed as well as dramatic.

The single player mode has plenty of variety, with modes like traffic attack and drifting challenges integrated into the campaign, and there's competitive multiplayer too. Like developer SUMO’s earlier OutRun 2 SP, you keep getting XP and unlockables even when you’re not winning. It’s not easy in the fastest class, though, and you’ll really have to learn the tracks to win.

Sonic & All-Stars Racing Transformed is a great karting game. Anyone can enjoy playing it, but if you've grown up with Sega games, the fantastic nostalgia is unmissable.

Download Sonic & All-Stars Racing Transformed in Softonic

Aliens: Colonial Marines

When it comes to the Alien franchise, there have been a lot of missteps. When Gearbox Software announced they were working on Aliens: Colonial Marines, there was a lot of hope that a true sequel to Aliens would take shape with this action game.

Fast forward six years and Sega finally published Aliens: Colonial Marines. But like most movie tie-in games, it fails to capture the theme and tone of the source material. Aliens: Colonial Marines' story takes place after James Cameron's 1986 movie, explaining what happened on the colony after Ripley and the first squad of Marines came and lost their encounter with the xenomorphs.

While it was expected that the game would have a very 1980s tone, Aliens: Colonial Marines takes it to a new level with bizarre writing, lack of character development, and a lack of polish.

Gameplay

As with all first-person shooters, nailing down the controls is very important. Aliens: Colonial Marines presents average controls where you spend more time trying to aim even the simplest shot to kill an Alien. Moving through the copy/paste environments feels like sliding over ice. There is no sense of urgency or reason to quickly complete objectives.

Selecting different weapons in Aliens: Colonial Marines is easy when switching from one of the two primary weapons, but changing your loadout takes a lot more time because you have to hold the weapon switch button, move the joystick to choose the new weapon and then release weapon switch. At this point you should have the new weapon selected, but half the time, Aliens: Colonial Marines does not recognize the change.

Throwing grenades results in the most basic of animations and doesn't satisfy, feeling more like throwing rocks into a river. Other weapons like the shotgun are unbalanced and you spend more time just trying to find the right weapon that you can "deal with" rather than favor. The upgrade points you earn in the game by completing levels allow you to upgrade weapons and parts, but every weapon feels either over or under powered.

The Alien AI is among the worst for any game. They sprint towards you, jumping occasionally, or mindlessly running around the level. Areas where you should be able to attack them are not available, so you are stuck watching them crawl around until they eventual attack.

Essentially, Aliens: Colonial Marines has a huge lack of polish. Everything feels incomplete and missing key features to accurately create the Aliens experience.

Graphics and Sound

Aliens: Colonial Marines is barely passable as a PC, PlayStation 3, and Xbox 360 game, even more when considering Aliens: Colonial Marines runs on the hopelessly outdated DirectX 9.0c. The game presents some of the most boring environments and even though it's heavily influenced by the movie, it still feels boring somehow. The expected lighting effects are non-existent, favoring either a pitch-black room or a barely lit cone of light from a flashlight.

Character models are laughable and while secondary characters have distinct features, they are easily forgettable. The source material takes little prominence with the Marines in their armor only having a passing resemblance to the movie. The detail available to create individual characters was not applied.

Aliens are among the worst looking. The character models look like the skins were pasted on without any definition to the character. Even when close, they look bland and covered with green moss rather than the H.R. Giger insect designs they were based on. It is sad to watch the Aliens because they have a very distinct look that was not used to the full potential in Aliens: Colonial Marines.

Sound in Aliens: Colonial Marines also has issues. While the game does feature original sound files from the movie for weapons and effects, the rest of the game sounds even more artificial. The environmental sound attempts to create tension, but become laughable because it feels so forced. The story pushes a specific tone, which goes out the window very quickly. The game mixes classic movie sound effects with a very strangely mixed audio track made for Aliens: Colonial Marines.

Even though Aliens: Colonial Marines contains voice acting, a lot of the lines are so haphazardly recorded they never sound serious. Even considering Aliens: Colonial Marines is bridging a 1980s movie, it still comes across as lacking.

Multiplayer

The biggest draw for multiplayer is the ability to play as one of the types of Aliens. Beyond that, the multiplayer in Aliens: Colonial Marines feels like an average selection of team deathmatch or goal-based missions. More than anything, the different modes do not present a big challenge other than one side always trying to kill the other. Controlling an Alien is even more difficult than controlling a Marine with imprecise attacks that result in many deaths. Even the various Aliens do not make the experience that fulfilling.

Aliens: Colonial Marines' multiplayer feels like a tacked-on addition to the game, more of a requirement than a fully thought-out mode for the game. It is disappointing because having a well developed multiplayer was one of the better selling points.

Misused license

Considering how long Aliens: Colonial Marines was in development, the end result should have been much better than what was released. Aliens: Colonial Marines looks nothing like it was presented as and feels like a last generation game rather than the fully realized game that was promised.

The gameplay is average at best and the graphics lack the shine that Gearbox originally presented. Given all the bugs and problems of Aliens: Colonial Marines, it will be a long time before another Aliens game is given the green light.

Playing Aliens: Colonial Marines creates the realization that something went wrong during development.

Download Aliens: Colonial Marines in Softonic

Hell Yeah! Wrath of the Dead Rabbit

Hell Yeah! Wrath of the Dead Rabbit is a bloody action platformer game where you are out to get revenge against monsters who took embarrassing pictures of you.

The game takes place in Hell where you play Ash, the Prince of Hell. While taking a relaxing bath, a picture is taken and uploaded to the Hell-ternet and Ash decides to find the demons who took the picture. Hell Yeah! Wrath of the Dead Rabbit features impressive visuals and an old school gameplay style that quickly becomes addictive.

Gameplay

The best way to play Hell Yeah! Wrath of the Dead Rabbit is with a PC controller. The controls require careful aiming and platforming skill that cannot be accomplished easily with a mouse and keyboard. In Hell Yeah! Wrath of the Dead Rabbit you have to explore each level and defeat the various monsters that might have seen your picture.

With your saw jetpack, you maneuver everywhere, drilling through rocks and dismembering monsters every single moment. Using weapons like machine guns and rocket launchers, you kill everything in your path. You have to have friends in your pursuit for vengeance. Weapons can be upgraded with loot that is found in each level and at the end of each level you have to kill a boss monster.

Even though Hell Yeah! Wrath of the Dead Rabbit can get repetitive, the game has a great variety of different levels and monsters. You have to use more than just your guns to kill them like using the environment or your jetpack to saw them into pieces.

Each mini-boss encounter ends with a quick mini-game that finishes the monsters off. After you defeat them you can send them to a camp where they are tasked to mine for money, research new weapons, or look for special items that can be used in Hell Yeah! Wrath of the Dead Rabbit.

Hell Yeah! Wrath of the Dead Rabbit's gameplay is a platformer at its core, but the insane style of the game always keeps it interesting.

Graphics

Hell Yeah! Wrath of the Dead Rabbit uses a slick cartoon style in all parts of the game. It is almost too bright to play in long periods because of how much is happening on screen at all times. The foreground is where you keep your attention, but the background also has smaller animations keeping a lot of action on screen.

All the monsters and animations in Hell Yeah! Wrath of the Dead Rabbit are impressive. The game does not suffer lag or dropped frames even when there is too much going on screen. It is actually hard to focus on one thing because of the speed that the game plays at. Even the mini-games pop up so quickly it is difficult to figure them out immediately.

The variety of levels adds to the excellence in the art direction of the game and you will never get bored, but your eyes may start hurting.

Sound

The game also has a lot of audio. While there is not any voice acting, there are a lot of character sounds, mainly grunting or other strange noises. It adds to the atmosphere of the game. The shining part of the game is the soundtrack which is fast paced and almost aggressive to keep your mind on completing levels quickly.

Each level in Hell Yeah! Wrath of the Dead Rabbit has a slightly different tone, but each moment has a core theme that follows throughout the game.

Overall

Hell Yeah! Wrath of the Dead Rabbit is a great 2D platformer that brings the old gameplay style with a new visual design. It has an insane presentation of color, action, sound, and gameplay. You can get frustrated with some of the boss encounters, but once you find the perfect strategy it becomes a lot easier.

Hell Yeah! Wrath of the Dead Rabbit was a surprise. The tongue-in-cheek style is great and you just have a lot of fun playing.

Download <a title="Hell Yeah!
Jet Set Radio

Jet Set Radio is a re-release of the classic Sega Dreamcast game.

One of the first games to use cell-shaded graphics, Jet Set Radio combines action and platforming in a three dimensional environment, allowing you to use your in-line skates to grind around levels to collect spray paint cans so you can tag (spray signs) around the level.

Gameplay

Since the original Dreamcast controller has a lot less buttons than current generation controllers, you could consider Jet Set Radio a simple game to play. With buttons to jump, sprint, and tag with spray paint, combined with directional and camera controls, Jet Set Radio does not require a lot of button memorization.

The fictional city of Tokyo-to is broken up into individual levels, and you have to expand your gang’s territory by defending your turf and expanding into other rival group’s areas. This is accomplished by skating around levels and spraying your tag over theirs to claim the area.

Each level contains a time limit to completely tag the area. Tokyo-to’s police force is also out to stop you from tagging each area and send out SWAT police to stop you. You have a life bar in Jet Set Radio that falls each time you are hit by the police or vehicles that drive around each area. Also if you do not finish tagging an area by the time limit, you also fail the level.

The controls in Jet Set Radio still prove to be a challenge. Using a controller, you have to use the analog stick to perform patterns to complete tags. The larger the tag, the more patterns you have to complete. There was a problem with the controller recognizing the patterns that the game required, causing the loss of the combination for the score. Character movement is also really loose so changing directions in very easy, but try and use precise controls and you may have a problem.

Jet Set Radio’s core gameplay returns without any changes, but that also brought back the slightly annoying controls.

Graphics

If anything, Jet Set Radio’s graphics are bright. It features a new high definition resolution, causing the brightness to reach insane levels. The cell-shaded visuals allow for a cartoon and comic book effect, but the neon color palette can cause some eye strain. The characters are heavily stylized from the non-playable characters to the main characters that you can use.

Jet Set Radio's environments are detailed enough to give the world a real feeling in the game, but do not expect high levels of detail. It is an old game, but the cell-shading can hide the age of the game somewhat. It is surprising how well the game aged, considering newer games that use the cell-shaded technique, but Jet Set Radio’s visuals are also great.

A nice feature in Jet Set Radio is the ability to create your own tags to use in the game with the included editor. You can create almost anything you want based off the tools supplied, and it will not be long until players create very impressive tags that they created. It adds a level of customization to the game.

Audio

Jet Set Radio had one of the most incredible soundtracks and contains the majority of the original songs. The sound effects like spray painting are the same as the original and sound real. Other effects like the police officers are slightly cartoonish and there is a good amount of English voiceovers.

You will enjoy the soundtrack to Jet Set Radio, but most other sounds get lost because the soundtrack is just so good.

Worth the time?

Jet Set Radio is an excellent classic game. It is entirely worth playing if you have never experienced it before. Old school players who actually owned a Dreamcast will enjoy replaying it. It does have a different style than other action games because it actually meets quicker play gameplay. The timer in levels is slightly long and levels can get frustrating, but once you get past the learning curve it is a lot of fun.

Download Jet Set Radio in Softonic

Binary Domain

Binary Domain is a squad based shooter - a futuristic action game that takes place in the Tokyo of 2080. Humanoid robots have been created that believe they are human, and they have now infiltrated humanity, and must be stopped.

What this means is a cover based third person shooter set in robot infested Tokyo. Binary Domain is frustrating because while it gets some things very right, parts of the game are incredibly irritating an spoil the experience.

The basic gameplay feels quite good. Binary Domain has a satisfying arcade feel to it, and the movement of your character and the weaponry is excellent. When you're fighting a wave of oncoming robots, it can be easy to forget the flaws of the game, as the shooting is good, and the enemies react well to being shot. Shoot a robot's legs and it will drag itself toward you, for example. The robots make fun enemies!

Your teammates are what really spoil Binary Domain. Their speach, while well acted, is often nonsensical, and they often get in your line of sight. Unlike in Mass Effect 3, where a teammate will move if you want their cover, in Binary Domain you will just have to go somewhere else. If you have a microphone, there are voice commands, but this doesn't work great and feels like a gimmick.

The environment and robots look great - boss robots are especially impressive. It's a shame that the game flows so badly - the artificial intelligence of your teammates just isn't acceptable for a squad based game in 2012.

Buried here is a good game that plays like it has been released far too soon.

Download Binary Domain in Softonic

Sonic Generations brings Sega's iconic hedgehog to your PC, in a platform game that shows the best of his 2D and 3D gameplay from the last two decades.

From the very beginning, speed was what defined Sonic against Nintendo's Mario, and Sonic Generations has a ton of that. Whether in 2 or 3D, Sonic Generations is really fast - but to get the best experience, you have to learn the levels. Inexperienced players will find the adrenalin rush interrupted by enemies and obstacles - learning through failure is how Sonic Generations works. If you find repeating levels irritating, Sonic is simply not for you!

Sonic Generations looks fantastic throughout. the presentation is great, and the animation and environments have never been better. This is one of the best Sonic games for many years, and avoids most of the pitfalls of some of his worst games! Fans will love it, and there is hardly a better introduction to the high speed platform thrills of a Sonic game.

Try out the free demo from Steam, which gives you a 'classic' 2D level and and excellent over the top 3D level to play through. Both need practice to perfect, so it's well worth downloading.

Download Sonic Generations in Softonic
