Simutrans is a transport and economic simulation game. Simutrans has not yet reached production state, but it is quite possible to build big transport networks between the industries and cities.

The player can create bus and rail connections and transport passengers, mail and goods in and between cities and industries. Even passenger ferries and oil tankers are included in the game. Goods are produced by industries from raw materials, sometimes over many steps of intermediate products. i.e. coal and iron ore are needed to produce steel in a steel mill. Oil may be transformed to plastics in a refinery. Plastics and steel are used to build cars by the car industry. Finally the cars are sold in the cities which need gas to run, which will also be produced at the refinery.

In Surgeon Simulator 2013 you play the part of a surgeon Nigel Burke. The twist is that Nigel has no medical qualifications - it's just you, some surgical tools and a body. Your goal is to complete various operations as quickly as possible with minimal blood loss starting with a heart transplant.

When you start the game, Surgeon Simulator 2013 opens with music from the British hospital drama "Casualty" set in Holby City hospital which continues throughout the game. You control the surgeon's hand with the mouse or keyboard but the first thing you'll notice Surgeon Simulator 2013 is extremely difficult to control. You control each finger separately which is tricky in itself but the hardest thing is actually picking-up tools and using them to heal and cut organs.

You will inevitably make a huge mess of your first few goes on Surgeon Simulator 2013 and hack your poor patient to pieces. I managed to send the spare heart flying across the room, before destroying the rib cage with a saw and then accidentally throwing both of the patient's lungs at his face - he had no chance after that.

At the end of the surgery, you will be given a verdict as to how the surgery went, a final blood remaining level, surgery time and rating. However, it's incredibly hard to know which tools you need and how to use them in Surgeon Simulator 2013. Some in-game prompts or instructions would have been better to prevent every operation turning into a blood bath.

There are some amusing sound effects to Surgeon Simulator 2013 - mostly Nigel Burke going "Oh No!" and "Oh Jesus!" in a cockney accent as things go wrong and your patient slips away. However, the Casualty theme soundtrack gets very repetitive and leaves you wishing the hospital TV drama had never been invented.

Surgeon Simulator 2013 is still a fun simulator which illustrates the complexity of major heart surgery whilst also being quite educational about the human body too.

In Virtual City 2, you can construct houses, industrial parks, make goods, deliver them to shopping malls, and even setup a mass transit system to transport people to your parks, movie theaters and stadiums. You can add pretty much anything a modern city needs including a recycling center, hospitals, fire stations and even the finder details such as trees and plants.

In Virtual City 2, you must be keep your citizens happy such as through the hosting of town events, trading with neighboring cities and building a marina and a train depot. Finally, you must deal with economic downturns, population crises and the consequences of natural disasters. You can get really creative in Virtual City 2 although there's no avoiding that it's a rather pale imitation of Sim City.

Virtual City 2 is still a decent Sim City style game that will unleash your creative juices in trying to build the perfect city.

From the ground up

The basics of SimCity have remained the same since the first game back in 1988. You build your city from scratch, choosing a location, then planning the different areas while making sure there are enough utilities and amenities to keep the population happy and healthy.

Single or multiplayer?

When you start a game, you can join a populated region, which will have other online players, or to start a fresh region yourself. Cities are limited in size, and SimCity works best when you have multiple cities that cooperate and specialize.

Whether you prefer to play alone or with others, it's enjoyable, but it's clearly designed more with multiplayer in mind. You cannot play without being connected to EA's servers, and while we expect early reliability problems to be resolved, never being able to play offline is a shame.

Playing the game

SimCity's interface is excellent. A beautifully designed thing that lets you do everything, while allowing you to enjoy the impressive views of your creation. The amount of information and detail available is incredible, and really gives your city the feeling of being alive.

You can learn about every individual resident's wishes and concerns, and pull up statistics on pretty much anything about the development of your city. You can also check out neighbors to see how they might complement you or offer you services.

Graphics and sound

The graphics cannot be faulted. SimCity just looks great, and the filters you can add mean you can make the game look the way you want. When you're zoomed in, the detail and animation is great, and even each resident seems to have somewhat of a personality. Everything is accompanied by pleasant background music and ambient effects.

Conclusion

SimCity is an excellent and very impressive game. But it's not quite the same as it used to be. This SimCity thrives in multiplayer games, and whether you enjoy that will dictate to an extent how much you like the game.

The teething problems with servers won't last, but even reliable servers won't allow you to play the game on your laptop away from an internet connection.

To succeed in Tropico 4, you have to manage the economy, build infrastructure and political support, while keeping the people happy enough. Natural disasters and superpowers now interfere with the business of dictatorship, so you have to manage them as well as your people.

Tropico 4 is cheerfully presented, and while it's surprisingly deep in terms of gameplay, it never feels too serious. The pace is gentle, but you can speed-up and slow-down time whenever you want. Bus Driver is a surprisingly fun simulator where your job is to transport passengers around an urban environment. Your mission is to stick to a timetable while obeying traffic rules and making sure you don't upset or injure passengers. Bus Driver is supposed to be all about realism. However, there's no game as such, although there are five different levels of ability, and you get bonuses for obeying rules of the road and sticking to your timetable etc.

There are five buses to drive in a huge city environment with various districts, 30 routes, and varying weather conditions set at differing times of day. There are different bus types that go along with Bus Driver such as school bus, tourist bus, sight-seeing tour bus and even a prisoner transportation bus. The entire driving environment in Bus Driver is made even more realistic courtesy of an AI system which 'learns' from your driving habits.

The vector graphics are a bit blocky and basic and the gameplay can get quite dull at times but for anyone who is a fan buses or just driving sims in general, Bus Driver is a lot of fun.

In recent years, the FIFA series has developed into a worthy rival to Pro Evolution Soccer, and in fact many will argue that FIFA 12 is a more complete soccer experience than PES 2012.

What's new in FIFA 12?

Building on the success of recent years, FIFA 12 introduces three main developments: precision dribbling, tactical defending and the player impact engine. These all - and especially the latter of the three - have a major impact on the gaming experience.

What does this mean?

The impact engine has arguably the greatest impact on gameplay, and it really changes the dynamics of tackling and contact in the game. FIFA 12's impact engine makes tackles look and feel much more realistic, and will no doubt result in more player injuries! When two players jump for a ball in the air in FIFA 12, they will no longer always land together perfectly, but may fall depending on the contact made with the other player.

Defending in general has been refined, and it's not longer possible to just hold down the 'pressure' button and expect the nearest defender to squeeze up and snatch the ball from the attacker. In fact, do that in FIFA 12 and you can seriously mistime the challenge and allow the player through. Timing is everything in this new tactical defending system, and while it's frustrating it's ultimately more rewarding when you start getting it right.

When dribbling in FIFA 12, you do feel in much more control than previous versions. Getting past defenders is more enjoyable as a result, and neat tricks seem easier to pull off.

How realistic is FIFA 12?

Very. As always, FIFA 12 is fully licensed so you'll be able to play with your favorite players and clubs, and the game will follow the summer and winter transfer windows, so teams will mirror their real life counterparts.

Graphics have had an incremental improvement, and animation is also better than last year's game. The full version of FIFA 12 will also have a big online component, with a much greater social element. Support Your Club League Tables will exist, allowing your performances with your favorite teams to contribute to their community standings overall. EA is also promising to keep FIFA 12 fresh with real-world soccer news.

What's in the demo?

The FIFA 12 demo gives you access to Manchester City, AC Milan, Olympic Marseille, Borussia Dortmund, Barcelona and Arsenal. The options are fairly limited, and settings such as choice of ball, weather and length of the halves are not incorporated in this demo. All other aspects of the game are also missing, so you play just one practice game, but it still gives you a good impression of FIFA 12.

FIFA 12 is an incredible soccer gaming experience which is as close you can get to playing a real game of soccer on your PC.

Your task in Pirates of Black Cove is to become the 'King of the Pirates'. The gameplay will revolve around light-RPG style questing, which you do to increase your standing among pirates, and real time casual naval battles. You will have to manage your Stronghold, which adds a kind of Sim City layer to the game. There will also be land-lubber Diablo-style combat amongst the coastal towns.

The mix of gameplay is what makes Pirates of Black Cove most interesting, and it's fun cartoon style graphics also look really good. The game is set in an open world, which gives you lots of opportunity to find side missions and play the game your own way. The biggest fear for Pirates of Black Cove is that it's too generic, and lacking in a strong enough storyline to keep players interested.

Pirates of Black Cove is shaping up to be an interesting mix of gameplay styles, and looks ideal for casual gamers.

In Cities in Motion you begin with a city full of automobiles, and have to design ways to clear up the city using buses, trams, subways and even water taxis and helicopters! There is an extensive tutorial to get you used to the basics of creating lines, stops and buying vehicles.

Once a transport line is activated, the population starts to use it, and you can see how successful it is. You have to consider where people want to go and from where. Inhabitants satisfaction can easily be seen, and you'll know you're not providing enough if there's an angry crowd waiting at a bus stop!

Cities in Motion requires some patience to get to grips with it. The tutorial is text heavy, and could be better explained. The menu system is fine once you're used to it, but it's not really intuitive. If you can get past this, and you enjoy the idea, Cities in Motion is really engaging. Watching a city moving efficiently through your transport designs is satisfying, and little things like each citizen being named give the game some character.

Cities in Motion could be more accessible, but it's a well made and fun public transport sim nonetheless.

The upgrades, ships, equipment, money, and commodities you earn in the game can be used in both the single player and multiplayer modes. You don't have to give up your progress in the game when switching between single player and multiplayer, nor do you have to give up what you earn when you join different multiplayer sessions.

Also, everything you do in the game takes place in a seamless universe without system walls, there are no required warp gates or trade lanes to restrict your travel and hold you back.

You can travel anywhere you want, with or without jump drives and gates, as long as you have the fuel and time to get there. You can descend into planet atmospheres (without loading screens or sudden environment flipping) to land at city trade stations or explore for hidden items.

You can escape to nebula clouds for sensor cover or hide in a massive asteroid cave for protection. If you'e low on fuel and don't have money, but you have a tractor beam and fuel converter, then retrieve photon particles from nearby stars and emissive nebulae which can be processed into fuel.

Design your ship for the role you want to play and customize the appearance by adjusting the position/scaling of the various parts of your ship.

Whether it's combat, exploration, mining, trading, racing, or a variety of other activities, you'll find many ways to play and advance in the game.
