Planet Pandora is a sparsely populated wasteland where the rule of law gets rewritten daily in the smoke of the last gun battle. Civilization consists of small outposts on the fringe of human influence, in an area called the Borderlands.

Pandora's one tourist attraction is a mythical Vault supposedly packed with fantastic riches. Fortune hunters, corrupt corporate mercenaries and lowlife hoodlums roam the landscape, searching under every grain of sand for the treasure.

Since most intelligent life on Pandora has the occupation of Vault Hunter, society has gone to hell - making the outposts and outback areas more than just a little dangerous.

Heavily influenced by the classic Sensible Soccer of the 90s, Sensational World Soccer requires only directional controls and one action button. This serves for passing, shooting and tackling, depending where your player is on the pitch.

The player you control is chosen by the computer - when you're not on the ball, you get the nearest player to it. Sensational World Soccer can take a bit of getting used to, as if you keep your fingers on the controls and the player changes, you can find your new player running in the wrong direction! Passing and shooting power depends on how long you hold the action button.

Sensational World Soccer's simplicity couldn't be further away from modern games like FIFA, but it's still a fun game. As well as choosing your tea, you can alter formation to suit your playing style. Match length can be three, five or seven minutes, and the game speed has three levels. Two players can play comfortably on the same keyboard.

Sensational World Soccer is a fun two player game, and a pretty tough single player retro challenge.

Cave Story starts with your character waking up with no memory, in a cave. The story is revealed as you progress through the game, which involves a mix of shooting, jumping, and talking to characters you meet. Like a role-playing game, you level up as you gain experience, which improves your health and increases the power of your weaponry as you find it.

You'll soon learn the basics of the story once the first cave has been completed, and it quickly becomes engrossing. The retro graphics are really cute, and the sound is very atmospheric. The controls are fairly simple, and configurable to your own tastes.

Cave Story is big for an indie, and will take several hours to play through, and even more if you want to find all of the story endings. It it quite challenging by today's standards, and players have to be very careful to regularly use the save rooms dotted around the game, or risk getting annoyed! There are cut scenes and conversations you must have, and its impossible to skip through them, so repetition isn't all that fun.

The Mac version requires a patch to run in English, as it was originally in Japanese. See below for instructions.

Although the saving is a pain, and the difficulty level is quite high, Cave Story is a fantastic platform adventure game. It's as good as any 2D game, and should be on everyone's list of must-play games.

3D Paradise Paintball allows you to play against other players within your web browser. Simply choose whether to play multiplayer or a single game. In addition, you can play against people in Facebook if you're invited to do so by another user. In single player mode, alien like plastic looking targets will pop up around you as you wade through sand and water to attack them. This isn't very hard and you can change weapon by scrolling up and down with your mouse wheel. The guns though all seem to be of the live ammunition type from machine guns to grenade launchers - not the safest kind of paintball you'll ever play!

The most fun is joining a multiplayer game where you run around blowing up other LAN based opponents. The surrounding graphics are excellent but the opponents themselves look like poor 3D aliens. You can take several hits - as can they - before they finally get "splatted" and as you run around you can pick up different bonuses such as run faster, walk on water, immortality etc. The problem is there doesn't seem to be any rhyme or reason to the game - if you were in teams it would be more fun but it's literally every man for himself with no instructions as to what you're really supposed to achieve other than blowing everyone away.

Despite the name, 3D Paradise Paintball has little to do with paintballing although it's still a decent attempt at a 3D POV shoot-em-up game.

Reactive is a mix between a 2D shooter and a puzzle game, reminiscent of games like Earthwork Jim or Battletoads on NES. Using your keyboard controls, you have to move around and attempt to survive in environments that, because of slightly pixelized graphics, look hostile and crowded. Your 2 legged chameleon can aim around and shoot enemies, but you have to wait for the clockwise motion of your aim to be focused on your enemy to shoot it. This and the number of obstacles present in the game make it fairly difficult, even from the start.

The originality of the game also resides in the unexpected reactions that you get from materials, like water or gas, that come into contact. You can sometimes use these reactions to your advantage to get through a level. As you progress through the game, you'll also know how to detect potentially dangerous reactions.

Reactive is certainly an original game. Although the graphics and game mechanics are not always excellent, the difficulty level and unexpected chemical reactions make it a real challenge.
