Audacity 2.0.3

For audio editing, look no further than open source wonder Audacity. You can record live, convert old records and tapes to digital, cut, copy and splice files and much more. This version is updated regularly, and despite the 'beta' tag is very stable.

Interface

Whether you choose the stable or beta series, Audacity is not very attractive, and can at first look complex. However, with a little experimentation it soon becomes a very usable application.

For live sound and digitizing old media, you need to feed audio into your computer via a cable. Your audio-in, or mic should be set up by default, but otherwise can be found in Preferences. Recording is then as easy as hitting the red button on the Audacity interface.

Easy to use

What makes Audacity great in this regard is that editing recordings is really simple, not tricky like some professional apps! Using the Highlight tool you can quickly cut, copy, or add effects to parts of tracks. Make a mistake and you can undo as many steps backward as you like, meaning you can experiment knowing nothing can be broken! As you can use up to 16 channels at once, Audacity gives users lots of flexibility.

Editing MP3 and other digital files is just as easy. Drag them into Audacity to open, and then do what you like with them. Adding fade ins or outs is easy, and you can save in whatever format you like. Audacity supports ID3 tags, so you can add all the meta data you like to saved tracks. There is lots more to Audacity, and luckily it has extensive documentation available online or to download.

Conclusion

Audacity is the best free audio editing tool around. It's an incredibly useful application, whether you're recording live or just editing audio files. Despite it's unattractive interface, Audacity is an essential download.

Download Audacity 2.0.3 in Softonic

Adobe Audition CS6

Adobe Audition started life as a simple audio editor called Cool Edit Pro until Adobe saw that the big money was in music creation software.

Adobe Audition has been available on Windows for many years now as a multi-track recording studio that offers all the refinement you expect in Adobe products but may leave beginners floundering in technical jargon. However, only now has it arrived on Mac but it has been completely re-written to provide cross-platform functionality and modernize it to increase native support for multicore processors and new hardware.

Adobe Audition's interface is clean. Each window is separated by tabs to keep the File, Effects, Main and Mixer sections separate and easy to revert to. If you don’t like the layout then Adobe has provided an Unlock Panel option which allows you to detach and move these windows to a position of your choosing. You can save your own rearrangements as workplace templates according to the type of project you are working on.

To really get the most out of Adobe Audition, you’ll need a pretty good sound card. For those concerned with MIDI support, Adobe Audition doesn’t offer a great deal in this area and many users report this as one of the most confusing aspects of the program to configure.

To describe all the editing possibilities of Adobe Audition would involve going into the minute technicalities of audio composition and compression but there are four main modes to get to grips with. The first is Waveform Display which displays the wave in graphical form. Second is Spectral Frequency Display which graphically displays the frequency range with colors. Logarithmic Display does exactly the same but obviously displays the wave as a Logarithm. For producing stereo-sound, there’s also Spectral Pan Display and Spectral Phase Display which enable you to get stereo sound perfectly synced.

The actual editing in Adobe Audition is performed using the time-honored cut and paste functions common to most audio and video editing programs. You simply mark an in and out point and cut and paste the audio until it’s as you want it. However, the program is much more advanced than this as it’s able to detect beat patterns and rhythms and set in and out points accordingly. To use this function though, you’ll have to spend a long time studying the Help guide (which fortunately is very clear and detailed). You can also use a relatively new function in the audio editing field called Frequency Space Editing which means you can edit certain frequencies of the sound rather than the wave as a whole. There are also of course a heap of effects that you can apply to sounds ranging from complex distortions to pitch bending specific frequencies.

Adobe Audition has been updated with a host of new features. Pick of the bunch is probably the way Adobe has improved multitrack editing, added new effects and enhanced noise reduction. They've also added phase correction tools plus VSTi virtual instrument support and native 5.1 surround support. The multi-track editing suite has been improved to save time and maintain consistency by grouping clips into a Multitrack View. From here you can trim and fade much more easily. You can also batch save all audio files applying specific file formats, locations, filename templates, and more.

However, some features from Adobe Audition 3 on Windows are missing from this Mac version, namely VSTi support and Spectral Pan and Phase views.

Adobe Audition is a very advanced program designed only for those who are serious about multi-track audio production. If you are looking for a simple sound editor, then this is way too advanced and will only leave you frustrated. If however you want to take your first few steps into professional editing, the extensive Adobe help guide will ensure that you get the most out of this rich and complex program.

Download Adobe Audition CS6 in Softonic

SeaMonkey 2.9.1

Firefox is of course Mozilla's big success story but the Mozilla Foundation do a lot more than web browsers. The unusually named SeaMonkey is a Mozilla product which has lofty ambitions - to be a web browser, advanced email, newsgroup and feed client, IRC chat, and HTML editor in one.

If this sounds a bit much to pull off well you'd be right. SeaMonkey is a bit of an outdated concept nowadays and it's no surprise that it carried on the work that Netscape started many years ago. It's a lot to get right in one go but this latest release sees SeaMonkey finally brought in line with the demands of Internet users today. And you know from the start it can't be that bad - under the hood, SeaMonkey is based on the same Mozilla source code which powers such things as Firefox, Thunderbird, Camino, Sunbird and Miro.

The similarities of SeaMonkey with Firefox are obvious from the start - and with good reason. SeaMonkey 2.0 has been refurbished with a modern version of Firefox based on Firefox 3.5.4 and is now much closer to Firefox as far as user profiles, add-ons, and functionality of user interface elements are concerned. Tabs in SeaMonkey can now be reopened after they have been closed and the way passwords and usernames are handled has been overhauled. To select another part of the suite you want to use, just go to the 'Window' option in the Menu Bar and select either Browser, Mail and Newsgroups, Address Book, IRC Chat and Composer.

There are several other major improvements related to the mail client. Setting up an account is easy and retrieving email using the IMAP (Internet Message Access Protocol) protocol is now faster and mail is synchronized by default by your Mac. And at long last, email accounts, folders, and messages can be viewed in tabs. In terms of looks, SeaMonkey has also been given a much better OS X theme which goes a long way to shaking off it's Windows heritage.

On the downside, some people feel that the new SeaMonkey has moved too far away from it's original Netscape origins in look, functionality and feel. The IRC chat client still looks very basic, techy and intimidating too. Also, it seems there is no basic import function to import passwords from earlier versions of SeaMonkey or even Firefox which is a bit annoying.

SeaMonkey will still probably only appeal to those who have used it from version 1.0, but there's no doubt that this latest release makes it a much more competitive and Mac friendly suite.

Download SeaMonkey 2.9.1 in Softonic

Sound editing software is often either too complicated or way too basic to do much with. WavePad finds a nice balance between these in an easy to use audio editor.

WavePad is a fully featured professional audio and music editor that allows you to record and edit music, voice and other audio recordings. You can add a variety of effects such as echo, amplification and noise reduction. and it can edit a wide range of formats including WAV. MP3, VOX, GSM, WMA, Real Audio, AIF, FLAC and OGG. The great thing is, it's absolutely free although it does offer you the chance to upgrade to WavePad Master's Edition which has additional effects and features.

This free version can support sample rates from 6000 to 96000Hz, stereo or mono at 8, 16, 24 or 32 bits. There's also an integrated CD ripper to save your creations. You can also have fun with the voice synthesizer which can give your voice a robotic effect for those out there still into Kraftwerk. The overall interface is clearly laid out and easy to use. You can use tabs to flip from edit to edit and there's a handy magnification tool to make razor sharp edits of tricky mixes, fade-ins and fade-outs.

There are far more interesting effects to be had in the Master's Edition but as a mid-range audio editor that's easy to use, WavePad is an excellent choice.

Download WavePad 5.34 in Softonic

Audio Hijack Pro can do that for you. Even better it can record literally any sound from any application or piece of hardware connected to your Mac.

Every piece of audio you grab is saved in the recording bin list. You'll find that Audio Hijack Pro has a quick record function and also lists preset recordings for specific applications like Safari, Skype, iTunes or iChat. It's very easy to add new ones and this really automates the recording process.

You can schedule automatic recording at precise days and hours of the week for each application. Audio Hijack Pro also lets you enter metadata, although it all has to be done manually (I didn't see an import feature), which is a little tedious.

There really is a wide selection of effects to choose from, 60 in all, and you can add more. I did find the process of inserting effects a little confusing, and you really need to connect them correctly to get what you are looking for.

Audio Hijack Pro comes with some preset formats to save your audio. You can create your own but I found Audio Hijack does not let you save them for future use.

Overall though, Audio Hijack Pro lets you record and enhance sounds from any application really quickly.

Download Audio Hijack Pro 2.10.3 in Softonic

It's much better than sending a generic JPEG scan.

PDF Studio is easy to use, yet powerful enough to allow you a whole host of editing options that enable you to annotate and edit documents. You can use it with existing PDF documents or directly using the tailor made scan-to-PDF feature. Note that PDF Studio doesn't require Adobe Reader to work - it uses its own propriety reader, which isn't nearly as good but does the job.

Editing documents is done via the formatting toolbar across the top. From here you can add text, draw diagrams, add watermarks, stamps and generally deface documents to your heart's content. If you want to join or split some PDFs, you can do that too, and even add a password to open the PDFs you create. Probably the greatest little feature is the ability to add sound and interactive elements to PDF documents - perfect for creating questionnaires and quizzes.

PDF Studio is ideal for anyone who doesn't like working with Adobe Reader and needs to add different types of annotations to their PDFs

Download PDF Studio 7.02 in Softonic

Dragonframe 3.0.2

Dragonframe is a professional tool that lets users create stop motion movies and animation.

There are quite a few programs let users create and edit animations on their Mac. There are even tools specifically for making stop motion movies, like Boinx iStopMotion and FramebyFrame. Dragonframe is just one of these stop motion animation creation and editing tools.

The concept of stop motion movies

Stop motion movies are a type of animation that is based on frames and captured one by one to be joined into a video file. If done correctly, the frames merge to create seamless movement within the movie. It takes patience to create even just a short stop motion animation clip. Dragonframe helps make sure everything lines up, from motion to sound and more.

Features and required equipment

To use Dragonframe properly, you're going to need a camera with which to take the frames you'll be merging to create your clip or movie. Then it's just about editing and tweaking to ensure everything lines up to your liking.

Dragonframe comes with a lot of cool features that include tabbed workspaces to make it easy to jump from project to project, a timeline editor and even a comprehensive lip-sync system for adding dialogue to your movie. In addition, vector-based drawing tools allow you to resize, rotate and adjust any objects you've drawn onscreen. The scaling is also quite smooth.

Installation

Beginners will likely find that a substantial amount of time will be initially taken up with learning how to navigate Dragonframe's expansive interface. Installation can also be a little bit of a pain. Dragonframe requires version 7.2.0 or higher of Apple's QuickTime movie viewing program or else the program won't even open. Testing revealed that a PC restart was required for Dragonframe to recognize the QuickTime update. Flux 1 users won't be disappointed by this latest incarnation and new users will be impressed by its all-round elegance, ease of use and power.

Flux 2 builds on Flux's excellent CSS features allowing you to edit CSS in the built-in code editor, or with the easy-to-use style editor, with changes being displayed in real time. The WYSIWYG page editor enables you to move elements around a page, alter their size, and tweak the margins with absolutely no CSS knowledge at all. The page editor is a genuine pleasure to use, allowing your imagination to run riot while you add new elements, tables, lists, images, movies, sounds and many other elements.

Flux 2 goes much further than those WYSIWYG web editors that only offer rigid templates and limited design power.

Download Flux 3.1.46 in Softonic

Mario Paint Composer is a remake of the Music Maker from Mario Paint on the SNES.

Even if you're not a nostalgic, it's a fun way to make music by using airplanes, cars and characters from Super Mario Bros. You can create music only in MIDI but this simplicity and Mario theme makes it ideal for kids that just want to have some fun.

To create music, you simply insert characters along the timeline. The different characters represent different sounds in Mario Paint Composer. Images placed on top of the line are high notes and lower notes are placed on the bottom line. Some controls at the bottom give control over playback although they are mainly limited to basic commands and controlling the tempo.

Once you've completed experimenting, simply record your song. The results are very limited in MIDI and you can't export yout creations to play on anything other than Mario Paint Composer.

Mario Paint Composer is a fun app for kids or those nostalgic for it on SNES.

Download Mario Paint Composer 2.00 in Softonic

TapeDeck 1.4.2

The TapeDeck audio recorder will immediately appeal to all of you that, just like me, still keep all their cassette tapes around. The application looks and sounds just like a tape deck player.

The design is simple yet reminiscent of the classic recorder. The tape rotates as it is played and TapeDeck features all the basic playback buttons you'd find.
The slide window on the right stacks up all your tape recordings. What really makes this application feel like an old recorder though are the snappy plastic sounds of the buttons and the clicks and whizzes from the tapes.
Rewinding could almost make you feel nostalgic, although it won't take as much time as on a traditional tape recorder.
Essentially, TapeDeck is a simple audio recorder and can easily be used as mac dictation software.
It has three levels of quality but only one recording format, M4A. However it also includes a very useful search box, which not only reads tape titles but also all the notes you''ve added to your recordings.
We also quite liked being able to export to iTunes, a feature which is almost essential in any proper audio recorder.
Despite limited functionalities, TapeDeck is a very original audio recorder, which should appeal to all of you who miss their good old tape recorders.

Download TapeDeck 1.4.2 in Softonic

If you've got several video clips all in different formats, it's a pain to have to convert every single one to the same format before you can join them.

Luckily AddMovie removes this need by allowing you to combine several video clips into one without any further conversion necessary. Alternatively, AddMovie can be used to compile a batch of clips for conversion into a specific format. The simple interface features a slider and marker that also allows you to extract movie frames, split movies at specific points and extract the sound track into an AIFF file.

You can select which format you'd like to output to including QuickTime, MPEG-4 and 3GP. Converting or joining files is very easy - simply drag and drop the files you want to join into the AddMovie File List. Next, click the options button to select exactly what you'd like to do with the files. Here you can choose an export format or make a "self contained" version (copy video and sound from all source movies). If you're merging clips, just click "Generate" and your files will slowly be converted. If you're just exporting clip into a different format, then just click "Export Movies".

It doesn't work with all formats and for Flash and WMV files, you'll have to install the quicktime plugins but AddMovie is a simple but efficient format merger and converter.

Download AddMovie 1.9.9 in Softonic

Sound Studio 4.1.1

Sound Studio is an easy to use but powerful application for recording and editing audio on your Mac.

It's ideal for anyone that wants to digitize tapes, vinyl records, record live performances, create their own mixes with crossfades, tweak levels and EQ settings, apply digital effects, and save the results in most major file formats. Alternatively, it's useful for anyone that wants to record and edit lectures, sermons, radio broadcasts and just about anything that you can record onto a digital audio recorder.

Note however that you can't save recording in MP3 format using Sound Studio and if you need to do this, you'll have to save it in an alternative format (such as AAC, AIFF or WAV) and then convert it with a third party application later. You also can't save audio normalization settings which is a bit frustrating if you need to make multiple recordings with the same noise levels.

However, Sound Studio is packed with handy powerful features such as the ability to layer sounds with multiple tracks, 24 different special effects (including fun ones like "monkey noises") and the ability to edit metadata for iTunes.

Sound Studio is a simple and feature-filled application for recording and editing your audio.

Download Sound Studio 4.1.1 in Softonic
