The Android Market is the official app store of Google's mobile platform. However, not all Android devices come with the Market installed on them, such as those with non-official ROMS.

Download the Android Market APK and you'll be able to get access to the app store on your device. Among the benefits of the Android Market are the ability to search for apps, notifications, automatic updates, widgets and more.

Google doesn't provide independently-written reviews of Android apps (for this, you should check out <taglink type="program" country="en" id="334711">Softonic Moba</taglink>), but it does its best to highlight the apps that are most popular, and picks out interesting new ones in its 'Featured' section.

How to install the Android Market on your phone

To install the Android Market APK, you don't need to root your phone, nor do you need to connect your device via ADB. Simply follow these steps:

1. Download the Android Market APK and move it to your mobile's SD card
2. In the phone's settings, go to Applications and check the 'Unknown Sources' option
3. Open a file manager (<taglink type="program" country="en" id="91365">Astro File Manager</taglink>, for example) and tap the Android Market APK file
4. That's it! The Android Market is now installed on your phone or tablet

The Android Market APK file can give you access to all the great Android apps if for some reason it's corrupted or missing from your device.

Download Android Market APK 3.4.4 in Softonic

Comic Zeal Comic Reader 5.0.36

Comic Zeal Comic Reader is a image archive viewer on iOS. While it is a universal app, it works best on the wider viewing screen of the iPad.

Supporting file formats like cbz, cbr, zip, rar, and PDF, Comic Zeal Comic Reader allows you to read image files inside these archives.

Comic Zeal Comic Reader has a small learning curve to learn how to accurately use the app. Files are normally sorted by title and numerical series are combined into one folder. The app has trouble with non-standard text, and it is usually easier to extract and recombine files with a standard file name.

As image files are scaled to the screen, the featured pinch-to-zoom function is not normally needed. Even when some images are two pages, the page can be scaled to fit in portrait mode. Turning the iPad to landscape will also scale so both pages show.

While reading, Comic Zeal Comic Reader will open the next file in a series providing a seamless experience. The slider in Comic Zeal Comic Reader becomes the all-in-one tool. Moving files is simple: slide to the right and the file is moved into the slider. The file can then be moved to another folder, deleted, or added into a newly created folder.

The only annoying aspect of Comic Zeal Comic Reader is importing through iTunes, which is a two-step process with the files first being imported into the iPad and then imported into Comic Zeal Comic Reader. Larger files take more time and that can also affect the reading speed.

Comic Zeal Comic Reader is one of the best apps for reading comics and manga.

Download Comic Zeal Comic Reader 5.0.36 in Softonic

Apple Shooting 1.5

Apple Shooting is a game for the iPhone, iPad, and iPod Touch that lets you step into the shoes of an archer and see how great your aim really is.

The object of the Apple Shooting is simple: shoot an apple off of a man's head and move on to the next level if you're successful. Move the bow and arrow up and down with your finger. By moving your finger away from the Apple Shooting shooter, you can adjust the length of your shot. This might seem a little counter-intuitive since an actual bow and arrow needs to be pulled back behind your body to shoot farther out.

Apple Shooting's graphics are pretty simple, but also kind of amusing. This is especially true if you accidentally shoot the man instead of the apple on top of his head. Apple Shooting is not violent at all, making it a game safe to let younger children play. When you advance to the next level, the man also dances a little.

Apple Shooting comes with simple directions that aren't really all that helpful. Trial and error will having you mastering Apple Shooting more than actually reading the directions. The instructions also boast challenging levels that become increasingly difficult the higher you go.

Unfortunately, during tests it seemed as though almost every level was the same as the last. Apple Shooter is definitely a fun game to mess around with for a couple of minutes, but in the long term, it's probably not one most people will return to like they might with other aim games such as Angry Birds.

Apple Shooting is a fun aim and win game for your mobile device, but a bit repetitive overall.

Download Apple Shooting 1.5 in Softonic

But when users want to just contact their friends without looking at walls or profiles, Facebook Messenger is the app to use.

A standalone messenger app, Facebook Messenger combines IM and texting with Facebook and phone contacts.
Shadowgun 1.1.2

Shadowgun is an impressive display of graphics and gameplay for iOS.

Let’s face it, the story of Shadowgun is not that important. It might be interesting to know the background of why the main character is going around and shooting everyone and everything.

But that is not really why you would play Shadowgun. Players are going to pay for Shadowgun like they paid for Infinity Blade – because it looks awesome.

While Infinity Blade took place in the past, Shadowgun is a futuristic third-person shooter. Using the Unity Engine, Shadowgun looks very impressive. In some cases, the visuals even surpass Infinity Blade’s amazing presentation.

Played on the iPad 2, Shadowgun plays fast and smooth. The gameplay is smart and only a little unfair with aiming at close range causing small amounts of panic with approaching enemies. The controls in Shadowgun are also well developed and easy to use.

Controlling movement with a radial circle that moves the character and another radial that fires the various weapons that are collected; moving the point-of-view is performed with the right hand allowing for freedom in aiming.

This combination in controls is fluid and without a lot of problems. A main issue is the lackluster speed of the main character. He is like a tank. Shadowgun also utilizes a cover system. Much like recent third-person games, players can push against cover and pop-and-shoot. Some cover is destructible and will decay as it takes damage. Taking cover in-game is important because even though the main character can absorb a lot of damage, he can be killed in a short amount of time.

Gameplay is a mixture of exploration and shooting on a linear path through levels. Players will walk into an area, get attacked, take cover, kill everyone, and then move to the next area. It is a simple mechanic, but maintains a level of addictiveness.

Content-wise there is nothing new for players to experience. The strength of the gameplay is what makes the experience fun in Shadowgun. For once, a developer was able to recreate a third-person shooter for touch-based interfaces.

Shadowgun is another step forward for the hardcore gaming community on mobile devices.

Download Shadowgun 1.1.2 in Softonic

Air Penguin is an addictive game of skill in which you take control of a penguin with a spring in his step and lead him on a quest over the Antarctic.

The object of Air Penguin is to guide the bouncing bird across a series of ice platforms, negotiating the many obstacles in your way. The screen scrolls vertically and you control the penguin by tilting the screen. You must make sure he lands onto the ice platforms without falling into the water.

Besides just jumping, Air Penguin also sees you ride turtles, skate across ice shelves and even fly along on the breeze. This varied gameplay helps keep Air Penguin interesting for a long time, and it's just as addictive as that other great bird soaring game, Angry Birds.

The are two different game modes in Air Penguin: Story and Survival. Story mode is played out over a series of levels, in which you need to reach the flag to proceed, while Survival is all about avoiding falling in the icy water for as long as you can.

As well as trying to get to the end, you should also be collecting fish along the way. These fish can be exchanged for power-ups that can help you progress through levels. Air Penguin even has its own store where you can buy more fish with real money. You may need to take advantage of this because eventually it becomes very difficult to collect enough fish to buy new power-ups.

Air Penguin looks nice, is easy to control and fun to play.
Talkonaut 5.70.92

Most mobile phone networks now recognise that the next big leap in phone functionality will be towards instant messaging, Push-To-Talk and VoIP internet calls. Programs like Talkonaut give you the opportunity to try these next generation features even if your phone isn’t the latest model.

Talkonaut includes several ways of staying in touch with your contacts. You can chat with buddies on MSN, Google Talk or Jabber, send SMS to Skype or other VoIP contacts or make VoIP calls. It is these last two features which are perhaps the most exciting as they bring some seriously new and interesting features to that mobile phone you may have been thinking about replacing.

Technically speaking, Talkonaut does not offer true ‘Voice Over IP’ calling. That is to say, because of network-related problems, any VoIP call made with the program is not conducted entirely over the internet. What happens when you choose to call a Google Talk contact is that Talkonaut’s network calls your phone, and then connects via the internet with your contact’s Google Talk client. You pay the price of one ‘leg’ of the call (the call-back which Talkonaut’s network establishes with your phone).

This all sounds very complicated but in fact the technology behind this feature is very simple. What’s more, Talkonaut is really easy to use, making all these different steps into a single, seamless process. We did encounter a couple of issues while testing the VoIP feature but saw enough of it working to be pretty impressed. The other features of Talkonaut worked perfectly, making traditional IM chats with your buddies a piece of cake.

Despite our slight problems making all of its features perform as expected, Talkonaut is a well designed and robust application. We’re impressed that it works on such a large number of phones and look forward to even more features as the program evolves.

Download Talkonaut 5.70.92 in Softonic

BlackBerry Desktop Manager allows you to sync your BlackBerry with your Windows computer effortlessly, giving you the ability to back up and share files without hassle.

What does BlackBerry Desktop Manager do?

The software allows you to install new applications, as well as synchronize contacts, tasks and messages between device and PC. There's also a 'Media' section in BlackBerry Desktop Manager for copying photos, video and audio; plus a Backup & Restore tool for managing the backup of your BlackBerry's data.

You can also use BlackBerry Desktop Manager to play around with your email settings. You can choose to forward incoming messages to your device, apply filters, and change your signature for outgoing emails.

Is it easy to use?

It's worth noting that the user interface within the BlackBerry Desktop Manager makes all these jobs really easy to perform. It's just a case of clicking on the right icon and following the steps in the wizard-style GUI. The only settings you really need to worry about in BlackBerry Desktop Manager are the connection and data folder options, which are pretty straightforward anyway.

The main downside to BlackBerry Desktop Manager is that it's a bit of a beast. The download is over 100Mb and the installation takes an age, but it's worth the wait. We also found the process of configuring a Bluetooth connection through Desktop Manager to be very awkward and long-winded.

If you want to backup, synchronize and share data with your device, BlackBerry Desktop Manager is the answer. It's also great for installing BlackBerry apps you download from Softonic!

Download BlackBerry Desktop Manager 6.1.0 in Softonic

WaveSecure 4.2.5.199

WaveSecure is an intelligent app designed to protect your phone in case it gets lost or stolen.

There are a number of very useful things WaveSecure can do to ensure that losing your phone doesn't cause you lots of inconvenience. Not only can it protect the data on your device, it can even help you find out where your phone is and recover it!

WaveSecure includes a Backup feature that stores all of your contacts and personal information from your phone onto a secure online server, so this can all be retrieved instantly if your phone goes missing. Whenever you like you can log into your WaveSecure account and restore personal information to your device.

Thanks to WaveSecure you don't need to worry about thieves using your phone. If a new SIM card is inserted into your handset, WaveSecure will instantly lock it, rendering it useless to the thief. You can even set a customized message to appear on screen when the thief tries to use it.

The app can also send an SMS alert to a buddy's mobile number saying that the SIM has been changed. WaveSecure can even pinpoint the whereabouts of your stolen mobile, tracking the current location and displaying it on a map.

Finally, if all else fails and you don't recover your phone, you can use WaveSecure to delete all of the data on your phone remotely. The application can even wipe the contents of your memory card.

The WaveSecure user interface is very easy to use, and the step-by-step setup wizard makes it easy to get up and running.

The one doubt we had about WaveSecure was over the strength of the password needed to access all the features. It's only a six-digit password, which means it could be relatively easy for someone to guess. If someone gained access to your account it would allow them to see exactly where you are, view all your contacts, lock your phone, or delete all your data. So make sure you don't use an easily guessable code, like your date of birth, or part of your phone number.

Security paranoia aside, WaveSecure is an excellent mobile security application that will save a lot of headache next time your phone gets lost or has been stolen.

Download WaveSecure 4.2.5.199 in Softonic

OpenTable 3.4.2

OpenTable is an app for the iPhone, iPad, and iPod Touch that allows you to make restaurant reservations right from your mobile device.

One of the least fun things about planning an evening out is trying to make reservations. No one likes sitting on hold, only to be told the night of your choosing is entirely booked already. That's where OpenTable steps in to make things easier for everyone involved.

OpenTable cuts out the restaurant host or hostess by allowing you to check table availabilities and make reservations online through your mobile device. You can give the app access to your location and search for restaurants nearby or else simply type in the city or restaurant name you're looking for. The app will then ask you for a date, time, and number of guests attending and take care of your reservation right away.

With a useful map feature, as well as restaurant descriptions, parking information, and user reviews, OpenTable really is a jack of all trades restaurant reservation app. You can even earn money towards future restaurant visits simply by booking through OpenTable. The only real downside is that if your restaurant isn't part of the OpenTable database, it won't be listed and you won't be able to book a reservation. Some restaurants also currently don't have any user reviews or ratings.

For a one-stop restaurant reservation app however, OpenTable should be your immediate go-to.

Download OpenTable 3.4.2 in Softonic

MyPhoneExplorer 1.8.2

MyPhoneExplorer allows you to monitor your Sony Ericsson or Android phone from your home computer.

A connection with MyPhoneExplorer is established very quickly, and the package detects the device either via USB cable, Bluetooth or Wifi. The installarion process varies a little depending on the device, so check out the instructions on the MyPhoneExplorer website. the Once you've synced, you can pretty much access everything on your PC. Perhaps one of the main uses for it is to co-ordinate your contacts. This is made very simple through MyPhoneExplorer and you simply need to click the 'Phone' or 'SIM' option under the 'Contacts' tab.

Likewise, MyPhoneExplorer gives you direct sync to <taglink type="program" country="en" id="125146">Outlook</taglink>, Outlook Express, Lotus Notes and <taglink type="program" country="en" id="40810">Thunderbird</taglink>.

The interface is very clearly laid out and displays all the information from your phone in a format that's much easier to read than on the device itself. For instance, you can access and manage your organizer, alarms, messages and phone settings, viewing everything in large format. What's more, because it has its own caching system, the transfer of files from phone to PC, and vice versa, is very quick indeed.

In terms of presentation and performance, MyPhoneExplorer can't be faulted. In fact, the only niggly thing about the program is the fact that it installs an eBay toolbar in your browser by default (it's easy to skip this step though).

If you use a Sony Ericsson or Android phone and need to sync it with your PC, MyPhoneExplorer presents probably the best platform for doing so.

Download MyPhoneExplorer 1.8.2 in Softonic
