Metro: Last Light

Apocalyptic shooter Metro: Last Light places you in the subway network that runs underneath Moscow. After a nuclear war, the Earth's surface is contaminated and uninhabitable, roamed by telepathic creatures and insane soldiers. The game combines a first-person shooter and a creepy, gloomy atmosphere to create a terrifying post-apocalptic alternative reality.

The battle against telepathic monsters

In Metro: Last Light, you'll play Artyom. The action is interspersed with dialogue that provides you with more information. You'll have 3 weapons to start with, and, as the game progresses, you can build on this arsenal by exchanging ammunition, which serves as the game's currency.

Metro: Last Light is linear and you don't have much freedom to explore. In fact, your biggest choices will probably revolve around whether to attack your enemies rambo-style, or stealthily, under the cover of darkness.

Traditional 1st person shooter

Metro: Last Light is a straight-up first person shooter where you move with the keyboard and mouse and see the action from your character's viewpoint. You can also use a gamepad to play. Pressing the button will allow you to light a torch, which will help keep your photosensitive enemies at bay.

Depending on the situation, you'll need to try different techniques when fighting. Lots of times, you'll find that a stealthy approach will let you sneak up on enemies, saving ammo and avoiding detection in one fell swoop.

In order to survive above ground, you'll need to use a gas mask. Keep an eye out though, because the mask's filter can become blocked, or the eye piece will cloud over with contamination. If either of these scenarios come to pass, it could lead to your demise.

Unnervingly beautiful graphics

The tragedy and pain of the story behind Metro: Last Light is clearly and perfectly reflected in the graphics. Faces are lined with pain and sync crisply with dialogue. The landscape of the decimated world and murky underground are patent and palpable - chipped tiles, rusty pipes, dirty stations and scurrying rats.

Everything in Metro: Last Light is beautifully fluid. The "camera" moves between fights and panorama seamlessly, the music changes from scene to scene, moving from lighthearted excitement to terror and doom. It really is a pleasure to look at.

An exciting stealth terror shooter

Metro: Last Light doesn't do things by halves. The hideous mutants, macabre surprises, creepy atmosphere and awesome soundtrack make for a game that is nothing short of memorable.

We've taken points off for the lack of a co-op mode, which would have been easy to implement. In a sentence, Metro: Last Light is solid - and solitary - entertainment, but lacks re-playability.

A terrifying alternative world

Metro: Last Light is set in a barren wasteland, where Nazi Germany rules and everybody else has been forced below ground. The only people who can survive above ground must wear special breathing equipment, while everybody else takes refuge in subway station townships.

The Metro: Last Light world is beset with mutants and a new race of telepathic humanoids, and it is among them that you must fight. The storyline is loosely based on the novel Metro 1033 by Dmitry Glukhovsky.

Download Metro: Last Light in Softonic

Far Cry 3 Blood Dragon

Fry Cry 3 Blood Dragon is a throwback to the insane idea of the future in the 1980s. Ubisoft's downloadable game doesn't take itself seriously, even though it's built on the engine that fueled Far Cry 3.

If you lived in the 80s, then Fry Cry 3 Blood Dragon will help to remember the nostalgia of the times. If you were born afterwards, then it's a great example of how bizarre the ideas from the era were.

A downloadable game with Far Cry 3 gameplay

While Far Cry 3 Blood Dragon uses the Far Cry 3 engine, the game features all new characters, locations, and graphics. It's not part of the offiicial story of Far Cry and only uses the name in the title to say where the core of the game came from.

The whole essence of Far Cry 3 Blood Dragon is about pulling the strange and crazy ideas from the 1980s and placing them in a game. Fry Cry 3 Blood Dragon walks the fine line of homage and caricature, but intelligently holds everything in control.

Fry Cry 3 Blood Dragon is still a first-person shooter and sandbox game. There are missions and outposts like in Far Cry 3, but the scale of the game has been shrunk. The skill tree is linear, and enemies and animals are smaller in number.

Far Cry 3 Blood Dragon is like the essence of Far Cry 3, taken in a new direction.

Same core, different finish

At the core, there aren't many differences between Far Cry 3 Blood Dragon and Far Cry 3. The number of enemies, weapons, skills, and vehicles is lower, but the game is smaller.

Since it's based in the 80s, stealth isn't as necessary and run-and-gun gameplay is encouraged. The weapons are different and have a more 80s future theme, but the bow and arrow are still favorites to use.

Lots of neon

The game really takes its influence to heart by running wild with neon colors and a massive synthesized soundtrack. It's all about being over-the-top and for a downloadable title, Far Cry 3 Blood Dragon does its job with excellence.

Great DLC game

Far Cry 3 Blood Dragon isn't a full game, but a slice of the potential for the Far Cry 3 engine. It wouldn't be surprising for Ubisoft to announce a full game using Far Cry 3 Blood Dragon as the source material.

If you can, Far Cry 3 Blood Dragon is a must play because it is a great first-person shooter experience.

Download Far Cry 3 Blood Dragon in Softonic

Advanced SystemCare Ultimate 6.0.8.289

Advanced SystemCare Ultimate is a security and optimization suite that includes just about every tool you'll ever need to keep your PC running its best. It will replace IObit's Advanced SystemCare with Antivirus 2013 as the company's comprehensive security and optimization suite.

Maintaining a PC can be intimidating and a headache if you're not a power user. IObit has taken this into consideration and made Advanced SystemCare Ultimate simple enough for the novice and powerful enough for more tech savvy users.

In 'Simple Mode,' Advanced SystemCare Ultimate is extremely simple to use. The main window shows the current health of your PC as well as any notifications that require action. There is a big button to scan your system and optimize it without having to fiddle with settings.

In 'Expert Mode,' power users are given a detailed list of what exactly Advanced SystemCare Ultimate is doing. Here's just some of the optimizations that Advanced SystemCare Ultimate will perform:

- Malware Removal
- Privacy Sweep
- Registry Defrag/Fix
- Vulnerability Fix
- Junk Files Clean
- System Optimization
- Disk Scan
- Disk Defragment

As with other maintenance and security suites, Advanced SystemCare Ultimate can be scheduled to run in the background so you'll never have to remember to maintain your PC. It'll all be taken care of while you use your computer normally.

An interesting feature of Advanced SystemCare Ultimate is the 'Turbo Boost' mode, which can be set to optimize your PC for work or gaming. Turbo Boost can be set to run at start up so your PC is ready for whatever tasks you have. There are a ton of options that you can customize to make your PC run just the way you want.

Advanced SystemCare Ultimate also puts a handy widget that shows CPU and RAM usage. There's an arrow you can click to expand it, which will show you the health of your PC as well as options to start a scan, clear up RAM, or shut down the computer. This widget is great for monitoring system resources as well as performing common tasks with Advanced SystemCare Ultimate.

If anything goes awry, Advanced SystemCare Ultimate offers a 'Rescue' tool. From there you can create or view system restore points. Registry files are also backed up so you can restore them if anything bad happens. These features are pretty basic. It would have been nice to see Advanced SystemCare Ultimate include a comprehensive backup solution.

Performance of Advanced SystemCare Ultimate is good, though full scans can take a long time. While performing maintenance, Advanced SystemCare Ultimate performed quickly, even with defragmenting disks and fixing registry files. There is an option to allow Advanced SystemCare Ultimate perform fixes automatically, without users having to review what needs to be fixed. This saves some time and thinking out of maintenance.

The virus scanner in Advanced SystemCare Ultimate combines BitDefender's antivirus technology with IObit's own malware detection engine to protect your PC. Advanced SystemCare Ultimate will run alongside other antivirus scanners but will disable Windows Defender, which is Windows 8's default antivirus program. We are still testing Advanced SystemCare Ultimate's antivirus performance and will update this review when the results come in.

Overall, Advanced SystemCare Ultimate offers a users one of the most comprehensive security and optimization suites available. Good performance and ease of use make Advanced SystemCare Ultimate an easy recommendation.

Download Advanced SystemCare Ultimate 6.0.8.289 in Softonic

If you liked <taglink type="program" country="en" id="305373">Angry Birds</taglink>, you're going to love Angry Birds Rio, a new installment of the game that sees the Angry Birds going to Brazil!

Angry Birds Rio follows exactly the same set up as the original game, except this time the Angry Birds are rescuing their poor brethren who have been captured, caged and taken to Rio De Janeiro. Your job is to help the birds escape by bombarding the cages and smashing through all the obstacles in their way, including fluffy - but evil - marmosets!

Angry Birds Rio is very similar to <taglink type="program" country="en" id="305373">the original</taglink>, but as we have already seen, just because it's a simple idea doesn't make it any less addictive. If you liked the first, you'll love the tropical flavor and bright colors of Angry Birds Rio, while the familiar gameplay means you'll be firing birds and crunching through cages before you know it.

Angry Birds Rio brings a does of color and interest to a game we already know and love.

Download Angry Birds Rio Demo 1.4.4 in Softonic

Need For Speed World 1.8.40.1166

Need For Speed World is the new online version of the extremely popular racing game franchise. It's a massively multiplayer open world game (MMO), with RPG style leveling up.

Huge Open world

Need For Speed World features Palmont, the city from Need For Speed Carbon, and also Rockport from Most Wanted, which combine to make a huge world to explore. There's a night/day rotation, which makes it feel more dynamic. There are no pedestrians, and little traffic. This means you won't be interrupted too often when racing, but does make Need For Speed World feel a bit lifeless.

Car Shopping

Choose a car from a small range of not very exciting cars to start with, liek the Toyota Corolla or Mitsubishi Eclipse, then roam the huge Need For Speed World looking for races. These can be multi or single player, and get into chases with the cops. Evading the police and ranking in races gives you experience points and money, which in turn unlock better cars that you can buy in the Need For Speed World showroom.

Mods

Your cars can be modified with stickers, paint and decals, and power-ups can be chosen and purchased with in game money. Need For Speed World seems pretty stable, even with loads of players online. When you enter the open world you can't crash into other players, only the environment and other traffic. Online players can only push you around if you enter a race. The cars in Need For Speed World have the forgiving, arcade style handling that makes the franchise such fun to play.

There is online chat alongside the racing, and you can add friends and meet up to race them. Graphically Need For Speed World is ok, but looks a few years old. However, this means you don't need a super computer to play the game!

Overall

Need For Speed World is an impressive massively multiplayer online racing game, and although it looks a bit basic it's really playable.

Download Need For Speed World 1.8.40.1166 in Softonic

Facade 1.1

Note: Facade only works on Windows ME to XP. It does not work on Vista or above. Facade is a unique free interactive adventure game using Artificial Intelligence (AI) where your role is to prevent the breakdown of a marriage.

The developers of Facade meanwhile describe it more complexly as: "An attempt to move beyond traditional branching or hyperlinked narrative to create a fully-realized, one-act interactive drama, integrating an interdisciplinary set of artistic practices and artificial intelligence technologies." You play the game as yourself and the longtime friend of couple named Grace and Trip which the developers describe as "an attractive and materially successful couple in their early thirties".

The plot is this: During an evening get-together at their apartment, things turn ugly (it's not clear why) and you somehow become embroiled in the destruction of Grace and Trip's marriage. No one is safe in Facade as the accusations fly, sides are taken and irreversible decisions are made that destroy happy homes. Your aim however is to make sure that ultimately Grace and Trip stay together rather than hurtle for expensive divorce proceedings.

To control your character, you must type to communicate with other characters, navigate with arrow keys and pick up and use objects with the mouse hand cursor. What you say to the characters influences their actions and whether they kiss and make up although its not an exact science. You may be waiting several moments for a response or the character may respond to you in a rather bizarre way.

The main problem with Facade is that although it's been surprisingly popular over the years, it's never been updated to work on Vista or above which is a real shame. If you're still running Windows ME to XP though, then you'll be able to play Facade. In the meantime, those that can't enjoy the game will have to do with watching one of the many YouTube screenplay videos dedicated to Facade.

It's a shame that Facade does not work on later versions of Windows because it's quite an original concept and provides more than a few laughs at resolving marital conflict.

Download Facade 1.1 in Softonic

Hell Yeah! Wrath of the Dead Rabbit

Hell Yeah! Wrath of the Dead Rabbit is a bloody action platformer game where you are out to get revenge against monsters who took embarrassing pictures of you.

The game takes place in Hell where you play Ash, the Prince of Hell. While taking a relaxing bath, a picture is taken and uploaded to the Hell-ternet and Ash decides to find the demons who took the picture. Hell Yeah! Wrath of the Dead Rabbit features impressive visuals and an old school gameplay style that quickly becomes addictive.

Gameplay

The best way to play Hell Yeah! Wrath of the Dead Rabbit is with a PC controller. The controls require careful aiming and platforming skill that cannot be accomplished easily with a mouse and keyboard. In Hell Yeah! Wrath of the Dead Rabbit you have to explore each level and defeat the various monsters that might have seen your picture.

With your saw jetpack, you maneuver everywhere, drilling through rocks and dismembering monsters every single moment. Using weapons like machine guns and rocket launchers, you kill everything in your path. You have to have friends in your pursuit for vengeance. Weapons can be upgraded with loot that is found in each level and at the end of each level you have to kill a boss monster.

Even though Hell Yeah! Wrath of the Dead Rabbit can get repetitive, the game has a great variety of different levels and monsters. You have to use more than just your guns to kill them like using the environment or your jetpack to saw them into pieces.

Each mini-boss encounter ends with a quick mini-game that finishes the monsters off. After you defeat them you can send them to a camp where they are tasked to mine for money, research new weapons, or look for special items that can be used in Hell Yeah! Wrath of the Dead Rabbit.

Hell Yeah! Wrath of the Dead Rabbit's gameplay is a platformer at its core, but the insane style of the game always keeps it interesting.

Graphics

Hell Yeah! Wrath of the Dead Rabbit uses a slick cartoon style in all parts of the game. It is almost too bright to play in long periods because of how much is happening on screen at all times. The foreground is where you keep your attention, but the background also has smaller animations keeping a lot of action on screen.

All the monsters and animations in Hell Yeah! Wrath of the Dead Rabbit are impressive. The game does not suffer lag or dropped frames even when there is too much going on screen. It is actually hard to focus on one thing because of the speed that the game plays at. Even the mini-games pop up so quickly it is difficult to figure them out immediately.

The variety of levels adds to the excellence in the art direction of the game and you will never get bored, but your eyes may start hurting.

Sound

The game also has a lot of audio. While there is not any voice acting, there are a lot of character sounds, mainly grunting or other strange noises. It adds to the atmosphere of the game. The shining part of the game is the soundtrack which is fast paced and almost aggressive to keep your mind on completing levels quickly.

Each level in Hell Yeah! Wrath of the Dead Rabbit has a slightly different tone, but each moment has a core theme that follows throughout the game.

Overall

Hell Yeah! Wrath of the Dead Rabbit is a great 2D platformer that brings the old gameplay style with a new visual design. It has an insane presentation of color, action, sound, and gameplay. You can get frustrated with some of the boss encounters, but once you find the perfect strategy it becomes a lot easier.

Hell Yeah! Wrath of the Dead Rabbit was a surprise. The tongue-in-cheek style is great and you just have a lot of fun playing.

Download <a title="Hell Yeah!
Watch Dogs Preview

Ubisoft surprised everyone when it showed Watch Dogs at its E3 2012 conference. A completely new title, it's an open world thriller set in Chicago. The first thing that springs to mind is GTA IV, as it's a third-person game set in a big city, but watching the gameplay video, you quickly see where Watchdogs is different.

The atmosphere is much darker, and your character is some kind of agent with a device that lets him hack communication and electronic systems. He can monitor mobile phones, search personal data, and hack the city's Central Operating System to control everything from stop lights to bridges.
Borderlands 2 Preview

Borderlands 2 is a first person shooter with RPG leveling. It's distinctive with it's cell-shaded graphics, over the top weaponry and characters.

We saw a demo of early Borderlands 2 gameplay where the player begins in a cold wasteland, and quickly comes across some ice-dwelling monsters. These showed off the improved enemy AI in the game: using their environments intelligently, enemies don’t simply attack, but will find objects to throw at you too and try to stay on higher ground. With humanoid enemies, this increased intelligence is even more pronounced - they work in teams to out-flank you, retreat when wounded and more.

All the battles in Borderlands 2 were reassuringly dynamic and dramatic, without feeling scripted. The range of weaponry is really varied, with the new use-once-and-throwaway-guns called Tediores looking really cool - they have ammunition in them, but you can also throw them as grenades, making them very flexible.

The mission demoed saw you teaming up with a female siren in two player co-op mode, to rescue Roland, a character from the first game. He has been captured by a large hovering robot, hiding out in a lair guarded by weaponized mining robots. Fighting through these as Roland is being taken away through the industrial complex, we saw enemy backup robots being fired in from a moon base, which looked really cool and emphasized the incredible scale. The moonbase can attack anywhere on the planet of Pandora, run by 'Handsome Jack', who is trying to violently bring law and order.

There was plenty of macabre, violent humor along the way, and the demo finished with the start of what looked like a big boss battle. The player was flung off a high damn structure by an enormous robot. Views from here, when there was time to look, were really impressive, and the huge landscape we could see is apparently all explorable in Borderlands 2.

Developers Gearbox were keen to make the point that they feel many game sequels are just 'content dumps', additional levels with no substantive changes, so they want to make Borderlands 2 a genuinely new game with real changes, and from what I saw, they are well on the way to achieving that.

Download Borderlands 2 Preview in Softonic

Arma II is an enormous and serious war simulation. From infantry to helicopters, you are thrown into realistic conflicts in an imaginary former Soviet state.

This massive demo lets you go through the extensive training, and two missions. Skipping the training is not recommended because Arma II is not Call of Duty, and simply running around shooting will result is quick death! You're taken through all the controls, vehicles, parachuting and more. It's not easy, and there are lots and lots of controls.

Once you've had the training it's on to the three missions. There is a transport mission, where you have to fly with a group of marines into combat, and there's an infantry mission where an enemy stronghold is being stormed. It's not Hollywood war, and this is very much a game for people interested in simulation. Standing up carelessly will result in bullets hitting you apparently from nowhere. You have to learn to work with your team and be patient!

The graphics are detailed, and with lots going on, so you'll need a powerful machine for Arma II to run smoothly, even with the graphics on the low setting. The sound is pretty good, although the speech animation is quite poor. The focus is so much on realism, that this isn't much of a game. It's complicated, confusing and hard! If that's what you're looking for, Arma II will suit you perfectly.

This is a hard game, and not one for the casual player. Despite the parachuting being pretty bad, most of the play modes are well done, and simulation fans will find much to enjoy here

Download ArmA 2 Demo in Softonic

Ridge Racer Unbounded

Ridge Racer Unbounded is an arcade racing game that combines the well-known drifting action of Ridge Racer with the destruction of games like <taglink type="program" country="en" id="96933">Split Second</taglink> and <taglink type="program" country="en" id="78552">Burnout</taglink>.

The first time you play Ridge Racer Unbounded it feels strange. Mixing the feel of western racers with the Ridge Racer is unusual. Car handling feels normal until you hit the drift button and then you're in Ridge Racer territory, with extremes drifts that defy logic. Add to this the destruction of the environment and other drivers, and you've got a very different Ridge Racer.

Each track is filled with destructible scenery - you build up your power by drifting, then can activate it to accelerate through tankers and buildings in explosive style. The power button can be used to take down other racers too, much like in Burnout. All of the destruction can make for very busy tracks, and it will take a while to optimize your routes. This can make early play-throughs tough, but once a track ‘clicks’, Ridge Racer Unbounded becomes an adrenalin-filled ballet of high speed destruction.

Ridge Racer Unbounded looks great, with neon-filled environments and fantastically shiny vehicles, with the trademark light trails appearing when activating power mode. Occasionally crashing through buildings can look untidy, but overall this is a very impressive looking racing title. Ridge Racer Unbounded can get really busy, and to help you concentrate, the display is really intelligent. There’s nothing complex to take your eyes away from the action, and important information is beautifully displayed on the track as you race. It’s both stylish and functional, which is the perfect combination.

There’s no doubt that arcade racers have taken a hit in recent years, with racing in general polarizing between cute karting and precision realism. Ridge Racer Unbounded hopes to succeed where Split Second failed, but its learning curve may put some players off.

Download Ridge Racer Unbounded in Softonic

The Battle for Wesnoth is a turn-based strategy game with a fantasy theme where your task is to build a great army in order to regain the throne of Wesnoth.

If you've ever played Dungeons and Dragons then you'll be familiar with the sort of territory that The Battle for Wesnoth covers. It's surprisingly complex and not a fantasy game that you can immediately get into but The Battle for Wesnoth has many treats hidden in its depths.

For a start, the amount of roles you can play gives the game great variation. Regaining the throne is but one scenario - you can also guard a frontier outpost, take on a load of undead warriors and guide elves to make a new home in the kingdom.

There are more than 200 units to take control of with 16 different tribes and six major factions. And if that's not enough, you can even create your own maps, scenarios and unit types. This ability to create your own style of game is really impressive for an open source RPG.

The Battle for Wesnoth is also a highly tactical game, requiring you to move units around in order to outfox your enemies, which takes some doing with several units on the go at once.

As far as open source RPG fantasy games go, The Battle for Wesnoth is an excellent effort.

Download Battle for Wesnoth 1.9.9 in Softonic

F1 2011

The second game in the new franchise, F1 2011 sees developers Codemasters polishing and tweaking their excellent 2010 Formula 1 simulator.

New Features

Graphically even more polished than before, and with some subtle but important car handling changes, F1 2011 looks like an incremental improvement rather than a revolution. However, 'if it ain't broke don't fix it' as the saying goes, and Codemasters have added some important features that make this game a worthy successor.

In terms of realism, there is now an optional safety car for people who want the full F1 experience, and the KERS and DRS systems have been introduced too. The first gives drivers a quick power boost for overtaking, while DRS allows drag to be reduced while racing, again giving a possible speed boost.

Multiplayer is still excellent, and now features split-screen mode. There are two new circuits, the Nurburgring and Buddh International Circuit.

Be the driver

Like its predecessor, and other Codemasters racing games, F1 2011 houses its career in an attractive motor-home which acts as your menu hub. It looks good, but means getting to the action is longer than it needs to be. Careers are still excellent though, and you can tailor the difficulty and detail to your wishes, which will keep everyone happy. Driving manually while using KERS and DRS is certainly a challenge, but the great thing about F1 2011 is that you don't have to make things that tough! The artificial intelligence of other cars is great, giving you interesting and fun competition even in one player mode.

Conclusion

F1 2011 is more of an evolution than a revolution, but that still makes it an excellent game. The sense of speed is maybe unparalleled, while the rain effect is absolutely gorgeous. Codemasters have taken a sport which can often feel dry and unwelcoming, and made it dynamic, visceral and exciting. We think F1 2011 is possibly the best looking racing game around, and will please hardcore fans and newcomers alike.

Download F1 2011 in Softonic
