The techno music soundtrack provides a thumping accompaniment to the on-screen action, although it tires after a while and you'll wish there was more varied music in the game.

The iBookstore that comes with iBooks is handy for buying the latest popular fiction and non-fiction. You can download samples of the books for free and check them out in iBooks before you buy. The store is by no means perfect, and we found browsing to be quite cumbersome, especially when compared with the excellent iBooks experience. Hopefully this will be improved in future updates, though. It would be nice to have the option to browse by author, for instance.

iBooks is one of the flagship products of the iPad and Apple has made a very good job of it. It provides a much more authentic reading experience than you’ll find in Kindle for iPhone, the best eBook reader for small-screen Apple devices.

xScope Browser - Web & File is also a file explorer, saving you from installing a separate app like Astro for examining your files. From an aesthetic point of view, xScope Browser - Web & File is modern, slick and skinnable, but you'll have to download the extra themes separately.

Using the browser - and tabbed browsing - is especially comfortable when you hold the phone horizontally, although anyone with fat finger syndrome might struggle with both tabs and options.

Although xScope Browser - Web & File boasts a file explorer, we have to admit that it's not the most impressive. While it might sometimes be handy to take a look at your files from inside your browser, the feature isn't very flexible, simply allowing you to browse, copy and send. If you're looking to do any real file management, we recommend that you look elsewhere.

In all xScope Browser - Web & File is a nice app. While it won't be knocking apps like Dolphin or Miren off their thrones, it's a very usable option and well worth a look if other browsers aren't to your liking. It's easy to use, has plenty of options and the file explorer is a nice touch - as long as you aren't looking for serious power.

While not the strongest contender in the Android browser pack, xScope Browser - Web & File is a very decent option.

As a whole, GRave Defense HD is not much different from GRave Defense HD Free. It is a port, but the original release was very strong and with the lack of new tower defense games, GRave Defense HD is a great addition to iOS.

The controls in Avenger are one of the standards for mobile games. One circle pad for movement, which can be accessed from any part of the left side of the screen, and jump and attack buttons are the primary controls. Avenger also has power attacks and magic, but the action focuses on button mashing so most of the time it is unnecessary.

Avenger plays like an action RPG with different weapons and items that help with higher power enemies. You will also quickly level up the main character and can buy enchantments to add attack or magic power.

While Avenger is a simple game, borrowing from Castlevania has helped the game become a solid experience. Gameplay can get repetitive, but the action experience is a lot of fun.

The game sets players into the role of John Slade, bounty hunter, who is after Dr. Edgar Simon, who is a crazy genius and leader of his own army. While the plot of the game creates the setting and overall theme of the game, Shadowgun focuses on action. Players will be moving from cover to cover, peeking out long enough to annihilate everything in Slade's way.

With a claim of six hours of gameplay, Shadowgun could have a lot to offer players. Mixing the cover system with a variety of weapons creates an addictive experience that can also be slightly frustrating.

Shadowgun’s main emphasis on action is tempered with the impressive visuals. Using the Unity Engine, character and environment models are detailed. Add the lighting effects into Shadowgun and the game is one of the best looking mobile games.

Controls in Shadowgun use an on-screen movement pad and separate fire/reload/weapon switch buttons. While it feels strange at first, the close proximity of the buttons becomes second nature quickly. It is a little difficult to precisely aim in Shadowgun, but the game is forgiving enough not to kill players from the start.

Shadowgun is still one of the best shooters for mobile devices and plays well on phones and tablets. Prepare for battery drains with all the action happening on screen though.

While it's not specified if the game is a prequel to the multiplatform game or just a game set in the same time, Batman Arkham City Lockdown is an impressive display of Batman on portable devices.

Developed by Netherrealm Studios, the team behind Mortal Kombat, and using the Unreal 3 Engine, like Infinity Blade II, Batman Arkham City Lockdown focuses on impressive graphics and solid combat gameplay.

Graphics

The Unreal 3 Engine accurately recreates the world established in Batman Arkham City. Even though some environments contain a smaller amount of detail, the main characters look amazing.

The secondary characters are cut-and-paste, and some variety would have been appreciated. The boss characters are all amazing though, with the engine pushing a large amount of polygons.

Sound

Batman Arkham City Lockdown’s audio also borrows from its console sibling. The dark orchestral tones emerge here and create the wonderful themes of the character. Play Batman Arkham City Lockdown with headphones because there are audio bits that cannot be heard through the small iOS speakers.

Gameplay

Infinity Blade II really nailed touch-based combat, and Batman Arkham City Lockdown borrows a similar design. Players have to swipe the screen to create attack combinations while dodging and defending against attacks.

Batman Arkham City Lockdown also uses tilt controls for Batman’s Batarangs. A little awkward in the beginning, the system does become easier to use with time.

The world is separated into different hubs. Each one has a set number of smaller areas and then the boss area. Simple in design, even the normal thugs are more dangerous in the later levels.

The game also includes an upgrade system for the physical condition of Batman and his gadgets. It is important to gauge what is most important as players work through the game. The cost of upgrades can require players to play through areas multiple times to earn enough currency.

Extras

Batman Arkham City Lockdown also features three different costumes: the Animated Series, The Dark Knight Returns, and Batman Beyond. Each costume has different status effects. All the costumes are in-app purchases.

Also included are high-resolution wallpapers and free issues of Arkham City related Batman comics. Curious fans can also read a set of biographies of characters in the game.

Worth it?

Batman Arkham City Lockdown is a paid game and is a little expensive. But the experience is solid and looking at Batman Arkham City Lockdown, there is potential for updates, including new characters and areas.

You can also earn more currency by purchasing apps from a specified list in the Tap Zoo: Christmas interface. Tap Zoo: Christmas unfortunately doesn't break any new ground. The touch pad controls are also a little difficult to work with since some of the objects you're trying to touch are so small. Additionally, the music selection is on a constant loop that can get annoying quite quickly.
