RealPlayer 16.0.2.232

RealPlayer is one of those media players that seems to have been around since the very beginnings of the web.

Features

These days, it's an app that attempts to be all things to all people - play DVDs, organize music, catalog photos, convert video, interact with social networking sites, browse internet multimedia....there's no end to what RealPlayer offers to its users. Even so, it's not an out-and-out success...

Usability

For a start, installation of RealPlayer is annoying - it takes a while, requires lots of "nexts" and tries to install and enable several features that users don't really need. Finally, when it starts, you're offered a chance to upgrade to paid versions of RealPlayer before you have to register yourself with Real Networks. If all this messing around doesn't appeal, check out a slimline app like UMPlayer.

When you're up and running, RealPlayer features a wide interface where you will notice ads and videos recommended by Real Networks. This looks cluttered and messy, and it's hard to know what the app actually offers. In reality, RealPlayer is ideal for playing and sharing video with your friends and followers on Facebook and Twitter and it works easily with BlackBerry, iPod, iPhone and other game systems. The new video converter allows you to copy online video to your iPod, Xbox, PS3 and other devices. Unfortunately, you can't rip DVDs with RealPlayer, although this is available as a feature if you upgrade to RealPlayer Plus.

Most recently, RealPlayer has been updated with far better mobile and social networking integration. You can now copy your favorite videos to an iPhone, iPad, Android, BlackBerry and dozens of other popular devices automatically. Downloading internet videos is faster, and for those of you with something to hide, RealPlayer offers a new Private folder. Social media has also been bumped up, with direct access to Facebook videos and usefully, a built-in feature to transfer videos to your mobile devices.

Quality

That said, RealPlayer isn't bad at all. It's comparable to Windows Media Player 12 as they both have some impressive ways of organizing your music. For me, the best feature is the CD burner which is something I've used from the early days of RealPlayer. The sheer quality of some of the media only available in Real formats makes RealPlayer an essential item in the toolkit of any fan of internet video and audio.

Conclusion

There's no shortage of media players theses days, and RealPlayer is by no means a bad option. It offers lots of features, good options and is a high-quality player that will do justice to your media. The only problem is that despite its modern features, it feels like a bit of a dinosaur. It's heavy and slow, looks chunky and takes an age to respond to clicks, and for many people - especially those who have experience of lighter options - it's just not the most comfortable player.

RealPlayer is a media player that, although powerful, has suffered from serious feature-creep over the years.

Download RealPlayer 16.0.2.232 in Softonic

WinZip 17.5 build 10480

WinZip is a file compression utility for Windows that allows you to reduce the size of large files, and archive different files into one big file.

Traditionally the first choice when it comes to compressing and uncompressing files, WinZip is one of the most popular downloads of all time. Despite the fact that its competitors have caught up somewhat, it remains a simple way to archive programs and reduce file sizes.

Much of WinZip's success has been down to its simplicity. From the outset, the program prompts you to choose between Classic mode and Wizard mode. The wizard is great for beginners, although even the classic interface is easily negotiated, giving you instant access to a range of features such as compression ratios, password-protection and a Favorites list.

While archiving files in WinZip is quick and easy, you can't help but thinking that the program has lost some ground on its competitors. For instance, the compression rates aren’t as high as they are in WinRAR, and you can only save files in Zip format rather than RAR, ISO or JAR.

Nevertheless, WinZip performs its function well, helping you archive files quickly and effectively.

Download WinZip 17.5 build 10480 in Softonic

Ubuntu 13.04

Ubuntu is the ultimate free operating system which us widely revered for it's ease of use and powerful features.

Ubuntu epitomizes everything that open source software is all about - free, quality software that works well and looks good. The latest version of Ubuntu "Maverick Meerkat" is packed with new features aimed at bringing Ubuntu to a wider market by making it easier than ever to use.

This download is for the Windows installer version of Ubuntu which installs Ubuntu on your system just like any other application you might install in Windows. It's the easiest and safest way of installing Ubuntu for the first time because you can easily remove it if you find you don't like it. If you do like it, you can download the desktop version which you'll then have to transfer to a CD or USB stick to install correctly.

Ubuntu allows you to do everything that Windows allows you to do with bonus that everything from the word processor to the e-mail client is free and it's fast. Ubuntu comes with Mozilla Firefox preinstalled although you can choose Google Premium from the fantastic Ubuntu Software Centre. One of the big stars of Ubuntu is Open Office which provides you with everything that Microsoft Office has. The IM client is Empathy IM and the mail client is Evolution Mail although you can install Skype and Thunderbird if you prefer. Other apps included in Ubuntu include Me Menu which gives you access to Facebook, Twitter and Identi.ca plus The GIMP, Flickr and Shotwell for image editing.

The major innovation in 10.10 however is the integration of a music store. Ubuntu's music player includes an integrated store, so you can buy and download new tracks. In addition, Ubuntu One's file-syncing means you can stream your music uninterrupted to your Android device or iPhone. This file syncing capability extends to other files and folders too. For video fans, you can still watch clips in YouTube, iPlayer, and MSN Player as well as play your own videos with Movie Player or you can use Pitivi to edit your videos. For game fans, there's lots of games to choose from in the Ubuntu Software Center including puzzles, adventures, strategy games and more - all for free.

One of the major benefits of Ubuntu however is simply its awesome speed. If you're used the the sluggishness of Windows, you're in for a treat. However, the major downside of Ubuntu is that it can be hard to get components in your PC to work with it. There is no driver center as such, meaning finding drivers to run your WiFi card, mouse-pad etc can be very hard. However, most newer laptops and PCs should have no problems being supported from the start.

Ubuntu is a fantastic example of how open source software can compete with the big guns. If you can get it working smoothly on your PC, you may never look back.

Download Ubuntu 13.04 in Softonic

What's more they aren't limited to using Adobe's library, but can create, share and use their own to create specific web applications.

For users, Adobe AIR gives access to new and exciting rich internet applications (RIA) which can be run straight from their desktop. These use very little memory, are usually quick to launch and execute and have very smooth animations.

A quick visit to the Adobe Showcase Gallery and you get an idea of the sort of applications that are being developed for Adobe AIR: a Google Analytics reporting suite, a Twitter desktop client, a movie discovery tool and much more.
Google Chrome 26.0.1410.64

Google Chrome definitely deserves its position as the browser to reckon with.

Chrome's outstanding features, like its download manager, incognito browsing mode and bookmark syncing, already make it a stand out app. In version 20, it adds a more new features, as well some tweaks that make it even more user-friendly.

New features

Being able to search directly from the address bar is one of the great things about Google Chrome. Now Omnibox, Google Chrome's address bar, will offer you various suggestions as you type. Depending on how accurate it thinks its results are, Chrome may even begin to pre-load a chosen page. Popular sites like Facebook and Twitter are now sure to load almost instantaneously.

You'll now also receive warnings when Google Chrome thinks a downloading file that might contain malware or something harmful to your PC. It does this by tracing the download's originating server and comparing it to sites on its blacklist. If you're concerned about privacy when it comes to Google looking at your downloads for potential malware, you can disable this feature within your browser preferences.

Updates and tweaks

Google Chrome introduces several smaller updates designed to improve the user experience. First, Google Chrome has improved page zooming to make it more consistent with other browsers - you can now zoom up to 500%. In addition, Print Preview no longer shows up in its own tab but rather appears in a highly-configurable modal window - this improves your workflow and makes printing even quicker. Google Chrome's History tab has also undergone a redesign. It now allows users to filter out or even remove specific domains you don't want showing up there.

There's also been an update to the V8 JavaScript engine and more than a dozen security fixes. In short, these changes make browsing even quicker - and using the internet even safer.

In addition, version 20 helps with vulnerability greatly, in that it covers patches for quite a few security-related bugs. Google Chrome's latest update will consequently help make your browsing experience even safer.

Chrome extensions

Last, but not least, there are also changes for extensions - not only can you now count on a range of Google Chrome extensions that rivals (and in many cases betters) Firefox's, but those of you with a more technical bent can take advantage of improved extension APIs, so if you've got an idea, it's even easier to make it into an extension yourself.

If you're considering making the switch from old favorites like <taglink type="program" country="en" id="107191">Firefox </taglink>or <taglink type="program" country="en" id="94114">Internet Explorer</taglink>, we'd wholeheartedly recommend Google Chrome as the browser of the future!

Google Chrome, Google's browser, mixes a clean, minimalist interface with a variety of powerful tools, making it a great browser.

Download Google Chrome 26.0.1410.64 in Softonic

Nokia Music For Windows 8 1.0

Nokia Music for Windows 8 is a desktop version of Nokia’s streaming radio service available on Windows Phone 7.5. Similar to Pandora and Spotify, Nokia Music allows unlimited audio streaming of “Mixes” categorized by artist or genres. You can also download Mixes for offline use or use Nokia Music for local music on your computer. While Nokia Music for Windows 8 has a $3.99 monthly subscription, there is a seven day free trial that includes all features.

How it Works

Nokia Music uses streaming Mixes which are similar to Pandora. You cannot select specific tracks for on demand listening. Instead, each Mix is a radio station that focuses on an artist or genre and provides similar sounding tracks. You can browse through Nokia’s premade Mixes or create your own. The default Mixes include various genres, top charting music, recommendations from popular musicians, sponsored music, and more. Nokia’s library is large and includes various genres of music, standup comedy acts, and songs from TV ads. If you are not a subscriber you will be limited to only 30 second previews per track, which is far too short. Subscribers will be able to listen full length tracks.

Creating your own mix is much more limited as you can only search by artists and not other categories such as genre or time period. You can also only add in three artists at most, resulting in a limited selection of music. On the plus side any Mix, premade or your own, can be downloaded for offline listening. Offline tracks are unfortunately disabled for non-subscribers. If you’re not satisfied with Nokia’s selection of music you can also use the app to listen to your own local files.

How it feels

The layout is comprised on large and medium sized tiles grouped into sections. The sections of Nokia Music include the track you are currently listening to, previously Mixes, default Nokia Mixes, your own creations, downloaded music, and local music. On the main track page there are buttons to display a song’s lyrics or open a menu with the band’s information. Depending on the artist, this can include a bio, image gallery, their Twitter feed, upcoming shows, similar artists, and Mixes they appear in. This is a wealth of information that will help you learn more about bands and discover new music.

Right clicking on Mix will provide buttons to download the track, buy it from Nokia’s store, or remove it from the front sections. The options menu includes changing accounts, updating subscriptions, providing feedback to Nokia, troubleshooting, and permissions. Settings allow you to adjust audio quality based on your connection type (Wifi or mobile), permission to send personal data back to Nokia, display wallpapers, and if the app runs is allowed on the Lock screen. Nokia Music subscriptions are relatively new, yet the amount of options is surprisingly plentiful.

Quality

Nokia Music’s wide selection of music and comedy is very impressive. The quality of streaming audio is decent at 192kbps for all tracks. Downloading music is generally fast, although you can suffer delays and pauses in streaming if you download several Mixes at the same time. Music with offensive lyrics are either listed with a clear “Explicit” icon or are completely censored with more broadcast friendly versions. The latter is very surprising for an online streaming service. In most cases all of Nokia’s library is clean and there is no setting to listen to adult versions.

Accessing Nokia’s library requires either a Nokia account or Facebook along with a monthly subscription fee; this is also on top of the normal Microsoft account to run the app. Surprisingly, if you sign up with Facebook Nokia Music will not update your activity or provide any form of social linking. Without a subscription you will be limited to short 30 second clips and cannot download music.

Final word

Even though you need a subscription and cannot access on demand music, the app still provides an amazing selection of music and comedy as well as the ability to download Mixes. The amount of additional data about artists and lyrics helps to connect you to the music. Try out Nokia Music’s free trial to listen to a diverse assortment of music.

Download Nokia Music For Windows 8 1.0 in Softonic

TweetDeck 2.7.1

Twitter's official desktop app TweetDeck has finally come out of beta, and joins the website and mobile apps as part of the redesign of the service.

TweetDeck allows you to follow any number of <taglink type="program" country="en" id="113573">Twitter</taglink> and <taglink type="program" country="en" id="118150">Facebook</taglink> accounts you run in one columned application. The biggest change with this version of TweetDeck is it no longer installs through Adobe AIR, making getting started that little bit faster.

The appearance of TweetDeck is largely unchanged. It's clean and easy to understand, and still probably the best app for using multiple accounts. The default setting features a Home feed of updates from all your accounts together. Then there is the @Me feed, which shows all interactions with you on Twitter or Facebook. Finally there is an Inbox for Direct Messages in Twitter. You can add to any of these from a selection of things like Lists or Tweets, and remove any of them too.

TweetDeck is absolutely essential if you use more than one Twitter account. It's easy to use, and very clearly designed, with the added security of Twitter's official support. Making a real installer so Adobe AIR isn't required is a great improvement on earlier versions too.

Download TweetDeck 2.7.1 in Softonic

Nimbuzz 2.5.1

Nimbuzz makes keeping in touch with all of your friends a less time consuming task.

This is where Nimbuzz comes in really handy as it's a multi-platform instant messaging client. This enables you to chat with your contacts and keep track of your friends' updates on more than a dozen different social networks and IM protocols, including <a href="http://facebook.en.softonic.com/web-apps"target="_blank">Facebook, <a href="http://twitter.en.softonic.com/web-apps"target="_blank">Twitter, <a href="http://myspace.en.softonic.com/web-apps"target="_blank">MySpace, MSN, ICQ, <a href="http://google-talk.en.softonic.com/"target="_blank">Google Talk and Jabber, among others.

Nimbuzz is already quite popular among mobile platforms, where it has been around for a while. This port to PC has gone a bit unnoticed, I guess partly because Nimbuzz doesn't feature as many tools and options as other similar programs. The tool in itself is quite simple, very light on resources and does what it says on the tin. There are no custom backgrounds, animation effects or any other bells and whistles.

Besides basic text chat, Nimbuzz includes other interesting options such as the ability to organize contacts by groups and the possibility to share files with them, even if they're not online, thanks a to a temporary storage system. Being primarily a mobile IM app, Nimbuzz also allows you to keep contacts synced with your mobile phone.

Despite being simpler than other similar tools, Nimbuzz is still a great app to keep in touch with friends across many different social networks and IM platforms.

Download Nimbuzz 2.5.1 in Softonic

PasswordBox 1.3.1.308

PasswordBox is a web browser extension that saves your passwords into one program. PasswordBox has versions for Internet Explorer, FireFox, and Chrome; the app uses a single login and account, allowing access across all browsers it is installed on. By default PasswordBox is compatible with popular websites such as Facebook and Twitter, but can be further modified for other web pages. This free beta version of PasswordBox will allow you to easily login to many websites without having to memorize countless passwords.

Features

PasswordBox allows you to store Passwords for many different websites. The Chrome and FireFox versions automatically allow you to enter passwords for sites such as Facebook, Hulu, LinkedIn and Amazon; the Internet Explore expands the list with financial sites such as Bank of America and J.P. Morgan. If these selections aren’t enough you can add your own favorite sites and store the corresponding passwords.

These passwords become encrypted on your own PC before they are sent to your PasswordBox account. When you visit a site registered with PasswordBox, you enter your Master Key (PasswordBox account password) to decrypt your password and log into a site. This is both convenient and a good means of preventing theft. On the downside, there is no way to recover your Master Key if lost, meaning that if you forget it you’ll be stuck out of your accounts.

Usability

PasswordBox has a somewhat counter-intuitive installation process. You will first download and install the PasswordBox program to your computer. This won’t actually add any extensions to your browsers. Instead, this will grant you access to features on its website and the ability to create an account. You must then go to the download page and install the extension for the browser you are currently using (Internet Explorer, FireFox, or Chrome). If you use all three browsers you'll have to download and install these individually. It would be much easier if accessing PasswordBox required just one app.

PasswordBox’s layout is slightly different depending on the browser. On FireFox and Chrome PasswordBox first opens up a new page with various tabs to insert passwords, change settings, or watch video tutorials. In Internet Explorer the extension is presented as a popup, but the buttons and functionality remain the same. After inserting your passwords it may be easy to forget that PasswordBox is even activated. The only small inclination you will notice is that applicable websites will now have a green “Box” icon within the password box.

Quality

PasswordBox’s appearance is very minimalistic and mundane. The FireFox and Chrome versions take up entire webpages which either contain unused space or unnecessarily large text. The Internet Explorer version is much more compact and easier to navigate, making it superior to the other two versions. Passwords appear as soon as you enter a website and logins activate smoothly without confirmations (You can set optional prompts via the settings menu). If you are ever confused by the interface, PasswordBox has a detailed help section and a gallery of in-depth tutorial videos.

Conclusion

PasswordBox is an excellent means of keeping all of your passwords in one place. Because your passwords are encrypted you won’t have to worry about online theft. Just be sure to remember your Master Key or you could be permanently locked out. Though the installation process is odd and confusing, once PasswordBox is set up it is easily accessible from Internet Explorer, FireFox, and Chrome. If you have too many passwords to keep track of PasswordBox is a great extension to have.

Download PasswordBox 1.3.1.308 in Softonic

Wondershare Video Editor lets you edit and create videos, adding effects, sound and transitions. It's ideal for beginners, as the layout mirrors professional apps like <taglink type="program" country="en" id="12703">Adobe Premier</taglink>, but is much simpler.

With Wondershare Video Editor, you simply import video and sound files into the Media window, and then drag them onto the time-line below. Here you can edit your files, adding sound, effects, trasitions between scenes and credit sequences.

The basic editing and transition tools are good in Wondershare Video Editor, allowing you to quickly and easily stitch together a video from clips. The additional tools - effects, text and intro/credit are very basic. They don't allow for much creativity, and they give you pretty cheap looking results.

If you're looking for an easy way to edit videos, but aren't ready for Premier, Wondershare Video Editor is a good place to start.
Twitter for Windows 8 1.0.0.1

Twitter for Windows 8 is the official Modern UI app. Now you can experience Twitter with a Windows 8 look and feel. Twitter for Windows 8 does lack a few features found in the web and mobile versions, but is still useful for most Twitter users.

Features

As expected Twitter for Windows 8’s functionality is the same as on the main Twitter site. There are separate pages for the home feed, connections, discover, and personal profile. You can also tweet or search from anywhere in the app. Clicking on an individual tweet will enlarge it, showing conversation history, retweets, favorites, and time stamps. Clicking on another tweet in a conversation will take you to a separate page. This comes off as rather unnecessary as it would make more sense if you stayed on the overlay you’re currently on. If a tweet includes a link clicking on it will switch to a page displaying the website or media. You can also open websites in your default web browser, which is very convenient.

There are issues regarding mentions. Twitter for Windows 8 lacks a pop-up to find people you follow. Instead you have to type their Twitter name when mentioning them in a new tweet. You must use their exact Twitter handle or Twitter for Windows 8 will not link to the correct account. You have to hit reply even for new conversations to avoid this glaring oversight. On the plus side when you receive mentions a large notification will appear in the upper right corner for a few seconds. This is a nice way to keep informed when someone directly contacts you.

Usability

Twitter for Windows 8’s usability is easy to understand for current Twitter users. The Home, Connect, Discover, and Me buttons are all on the left side. New tweets and search buttons are displayed in the top right corner. There is a lot of unused space, which easily could have been filled with larger buttons or menus. The Home and Connect pages are presented vertically, while the Discover and Me pages are horizontal. In Twitter for Windows 8 all pages can be controlled with scroll bars or via mouse wheel. The horizontal pages include a view more button to find new tweets or view image galleries. The layout is passable at best and feels better suited for touch controls, rather than a mouse and keyboard.

A strange aspect of the interface is a lack of a log out button. This is because you can only authorize a single account with Twitter for Windows 8 at a time. Even if you revoke access to the app there's no option to switch to a different account. You will need to completely deauthorization and reauthorize another account. It is very annoying to jump through hoops like this, especially if you want to use Twitter for Windows 8 for multiple accounts.

Quality

Twitter for Windows 8’s appearance mixes the look of the Twitter site with the feel of a Modern UI app. Mellow blue, black, and white is nearly all you’ll see. This is because custom backgrounds will not appear in Twitter for Windows 8.

Twitter for Windows 8 does have a few slow down and hiccups, mostly when trying to refresh many tweets after idling. You can experience tweet limit errors when using Twitter for Windows 8. Twitter typically puts hourly and daily tweet limits of third party apps. This is strange as Twitter for Windows 8 is meant to be an official first-party app, yet is treated as a third party app.

Conclusion

Twitter for Windows 8 is a good way to stay connected to the Twitter universe in a Modern UI app. Twitter for Windows 8 has most of the standard functionality of other Twitter versions. There are currently multiple account issues and daily tweet limitations, but these will only affect the most dedicated Twitter users. For more casual users Twitter for Windows 8 is still a great app.

Download Twitter for Windows 8 1.0.0.1 in Softonic

Feedly 14.0 (Firefox)

Whatever your homepage is, the chances are it's not a very personalized thing. Make things a bit more 'Web 2.0' and install Feedly on Firefox to give yourself a completely new homepage experience.

This Firefox add-on is surprisingly powerful. In essence it's an RSS feed reader, organized like a magazine page. You can add any page you like, just by hitting the orange RSS symbol in Firefox's address bar, or alternatively browse Feedly by subject and have panels that show you focused news that you want to read.

If you have a Google Reader account, it's even better, as it integrates perfectly and you'll have all your feeds accessible at once. Of course, you could set your reader as a home page, but Feedly doesn't have some advantages. First is appearance - it's really attractive and comfortable to use, with a great layout that's much warmer than Google reader.

However, Feedly also integrates with Twitter, Delicious, YouTube and Amazon, so you can start with a really rich selection of content every time you open Firefox. You can organize Feedly easily, by dragging content around, and every part can be deleted or changed, it really is very flexible.

If you put the time into setting it up, Feedly will give you a fantastic personalized magazine every time you start up.

Download Feedly 14.0 (Firefox) in Softonic

MetroTwit 1.1.3075

MetroTwit is a Twitter desktop client with clean and modern design based on Microsoft's own Metro design language. It aims to offer all the functionality of the web app, but outside your browser.

MetroTwit certainly looks good, with a bold design that's color customizable and looks great in Windows 7. The downside of that is the app doesn't have a standard interface. Like most desktop Twitter clients, MetroTwit is split into columns which can be added or deleted at will. You could have your Twitter feed, plus a search and your private messages, for example.

MetroTwit has optional popup and audio notifications, although a busy Twitter feed makes them almost impossibly intrusive! You can also choose your image and link shortening services. Overall, MetroTwit does a good job of putting the web app in a clean, attractive desktop client. What it is currently missing is support for multiple accounts, which many dedicated apps now offer.

MetroTwit is a neat desktop Twitter client, but it's in very early beta form, so you are likely to encounter bugs. However, we found it to be pretty stable and the design is refreshing.

Download MetroTwit 1.1.3075 in Softonic

Chime 1.73

Chime is a Chrome extension that keeps you notified about your major social networks and web services. This free beta version of Chime will provide alerts about activity on Twitter, Facebook, Gmail and many more. Chime generates a list of all these services and links directly to individual posts. With Chime you will be able to stay connected without tabbing between multiple sites.

Features

The beta release of Chime has support for ten web services: Google+, Gmail, Twitter, Facebook, Quora, Flickr, GitHub, Foursquare, Reddit, and Stackoverflow. For Chime to recognize a service you must log into each of them separately from their main website. Once you’ve logged in to one or more of these services Chime will notify you of activity in three ways. First, a pop-up will show in the lower right corner of your desktop. Second, clicking the Chime extension icon will show a drop down list of all unread alerts. Last, you can open a Chime tab that will provide all past notifications.

With all of these great features it's a shame that Chime does not support other popular web services such as LinkedIn, Tumblr, or Outlook. Hopefully these will be included in the final release.

Usability

Chime is intuitive and easy to use. You will be presented with large icons of each of the supported web services, though there are no rollovers or headers for ones you might not be familiar with. Clicking on an icon will take you to the corresponding website where you can log in. Chime's functionality depends on your settings on each individual website. For example, if you disable notifications on Facebook, then Chime will have nothing to intercept. Clicking on a notification will take you directly to the corresponding website.

Despite Chime’s name there are no actual audio notifications or settings to change how notifications appear. At present you can only choose to enable/disable desktop notifications. You can filter and hide each service type in both the drop down menu and Chime tab. However, if you do not have log in cookies enabled filtering will log you out of a service.

Quality

Chime is coordinated with each network’s prime color: Facebook is blue, Reddit is orange, etc. Whenever a notification pops up or is checked it will have a clear colored banner. Chime has slow down when first logging into a service, especially if it’s accumulating hundreds of unread emails or replies. After the initial hiccup Chime works smoothly without noticeable performance issues.

Conclusion

Chime is a great way to stay on top of ten popular web services and social networks. The beta might have some minor performance and functionality issues, but it’s still an excellent means of monitoring popular sites.

Download Chime 1.73 in Softonic

Twitter @ Desktop allows you to quickly get the latest Twitter updates quickly without any fuss, clutter, or spam. The application bypasses all fancy graphics, attached pictures, or linked videos. Instead, Twitter @ Desktop delivers pure information as Unicode plain text. Twitter @ Desktop is in every way the complete antithesis of <taglink type="program" country="en" id="79546">TweetDeck</taglink>.

Twitter @ Desktop initial installation is a little abrasive. It automatically requires the <taglink type="program" country="en" id="36203">Babylon Toolbar</taglink> to complete installation, and will blackout options until you fully comply. This can easily be mistaken as a form of intrusive adware, although removing this secondary program wasn’t an issue. There were no obvious impacts to Windows or the Tweeting experience.

Twitter @ Desktop links into your Twitter account via your default web browser and requests authorization during each session. Twitter generates a pin upon this request which is then used to open the software.

Twitter @ Desktop is completely bare bones. There is no auto refresh or real time updates. Instead you will have to press the "latest tweets" button to reload the feed. Users’ handles will be on the left hand column along with their tweet on the right hand column. All other pertinent information is missing: this includes their profile picture, user name, time of posting, location, device information, or retweet source. This can make it difficult to follow long and intricate conversations.

The amount of tweets displayed in Twitter @ Desktop are rather short, totaling around the last 30 from people you follow. Even after hitting the refresh button it took too long to get the latest feed, requiring three or four presses to update correctly. This may be adequate for non-active Twitter users, but for those with a Facebook mentality Twitter @ Desktop doesn’t offer enough.

Twitter @ Desktop contains the absolute minimum interaction to gain an updated Twitter feed. If you constantly check Twitter you’ll want a more detiled application.

Download Twitter @ Desktop 1.1.6 in Softonic
