Data loss can be an absolute nightmare if you have no backup. Disk Drill for Mac is a free Mac data recovery tool that's easy to use and efficient.

Disk Drill for Mac recovers data from external or internal hard drives, memory cards and just about any formatted or raw, media. However, note that it won't be much use if your data has been overwritten. Once recovered, you can help prevent future disasters by using Recovery Vault.

When something is deleted, Recovery Vault automatically makes it possible to recover not only the file itself, but also its properties, such as original file name, location, etc. To prevent others from seeing what you've deleted, you can set a Master Password.

In the free version of Disk Drill for Mac , certain features are disabled such as bookmarks synchronization, folder synchronization, iTunes synchronization etc. However, the free version does the most important thing which is finding files and finding them fast. It's very easy to use and is an excellent final option if you feel like you've lost your data for good.

Disk Drill for Mac is a valuable tool to recover lost files.

Download Disk Drill for Mac 1.8.203 in Softonic

Roboform for Mac 1.2.9

Tired of having to remember all of your passwords and personal info? RoboForm for Mac securely stores online and offline passwords on your iMac or MacBook, automatically logs you into online accounts and completes online registration and checkout forms with just one master password.

Note that RoboForm for Mac only works in the <taglink type="program" country="en" id="63208">Safari</taglink> and <taglink type="program" country="en" id="107255">Firefox</taglink> browsers. Roboform for Mac can however sync with RoboForm Everywhere for use on other platforms or devices.

The first time you launch Roboform, you're offered the chance to signup immediately for an online account which syncs across all devices or just use it on your Mac. It's wise to set it up just on your Mac to be sure that you're comfortable with RoboForm before going any further. It allows you to enter information like phone numbers, address, company, bank account details and Social Security Number and passport details. Once it’s all stored in RoboForm, you’ll be able to fill in online forms in a click. This makes it easy to fill in web forms that require private data although it may not work with all secure fields, especially when using banking websites.

When browsing the web, logins will probably be the item you use most. Every time you enter a user name and password for a website, RoboForm will offer to store it. From then on, you won’t have to worry about entering those details when accessing the page, as RoboForm will handle it automatically. To protect against phishing, RoboForm will always compare a website URL to the one corresponding to your password.

If you’re having trouble defining a strong password you can use the password generator found in tools. Not only can you choose the number and types of characters, but also exclude similar characters (such as 1 and I or O and 0) or limit to hexadecimals. For any element you create, RoboForm offers five known encryption algorithms to choose from for your entries: Blowfish, AES, RC6, 1DES and 3DES.

There are of course security concerns with any kind of password manager such as Roboform but as an extra security feature, you can choose to have RoboForm automatically log off after a certain amount of minutes or when you lock your workstation. If you use Roboform's syncing feature, the developers assure that their servers fully encrypt your data.

Although <taglink type="program" country="en" id="54782">1Password</taglink> is still probably the best password manager for Macs, Roboform is a very competitive alternative but it is limited to Safari and Firefox users. There is a 1Password import tool if you want to try it out or migrate all of your data across.

RoboForm is a slick and well organized password manager and form filler for Macs.

Download Roboform for Mac 1.2.9 in Softonic

Wii Transfer 2.7.2

If you've got a Wii, you can put it to far more valuable use than throwing bowling balls and jumping around with a fake tennis racket.

You could also use the console to receive data, including photos, music and movie streams from your Mac that you can browse, listen and watch on your TV. This is really useful if you've got a huge amount of multimedia data stored on your hard drive and can't be bothered constantly burning it all to DVD to watch on TV via a DVD player. Simply use Wii Transfer to send the data directly to your Wii.

Using Wii Transfer couldn't be simpler. Firstly you'll need to make sure that you've got the Wii Internet Channel installed on your Wii. Fortunately, Nintendo have seen sense and stopped charging $10 for it. The browser is now available for free to anyone (just go to 'Wii Shopping' on the main menu to download it). When you start Wii transfer, you'll be given an IP address to enter into your Wii browser. Type it in (and I recommend saving it to your favorites so you don't have to keep re-entering it every time you want to stream data) and you'll immediately be presented with a menu for Pictures, Movies and Music.

Wii Transfer is automatically integrated into iPhoto and iTunes so your pictures and music will instantly be available. To stream films however, you'll need to drag and drop them into the Wii Transfer interface. This is the slightly annoying bit as you have to wait for Wii Transfer to convert your video file into something it can read. If you're hoping to stream a full DivX movie for example, this could take some time. Once converted though, your films are ready for watching on your TV.

Wii Transfer is easy enough for even the most non-tech savvy Wii and Mac user to master. So, if you're looking for a simple way to stream data from your Mac to your Wii, look no further.

Download Wii Transfer 2.7.2 in Softonic

If you're looking for a way to improve your typing skills that gives you detailed readouts and stats on how you're doing, then Master Key could be for you.

Master Key is a rather basic looking but very effective typing tutor which takes you through a huge series of drills in order to bring your typing speed up to scratch. Master Key includes drills for U.S., Dvorak, French, and German keyboard layouts and if the huge number of drills aren't enough for you, you can import your own text files, eBook pages and even create your own drills.

When you setup Master Key, you're asked whether you want to store pupil files individually on your hard drive or in the Applications folder so that other users on a network can access the records. The interface is very basic - it looks very dated - but it's full of handy tips and hints to prepare you before you type. To get started, click New Pupil and enter your name. You then have a huge range of drills and sub-drills to choose from.

As you type, there are Accuracy, WPM and Error dials at the top of the interface. An error noise sounds if you make a mistake but the basic aim on the test I tried (Learning QWERTY) was to type letters and the spacebar in as fast a time as possible. The score readings and stats are incredibly in-depth when you've finished. There's even a game called ParaTyper which involves saving paratroopers as you type although I couldn't access this because its probably only available in the full version which you are prompted to upgrade to every time you start a new test.

Master Key may look simple and a bit dated but its incredibly complete and will cover every possible angle of your typing skills.

Download Master Key 5.6 in Softonic

Drag and drop words and shapes and connect them together, creating branches for the different levels of ideas. The data drawer that slides open at the bottom of your screen also displays a tree view of your ideas.

Links to websites can be added via the Inspector Panel. Just select the link type and copy in the url. Once you've come up with all your ideas, it's time to export them. Either save them to PDF or print them out on paper. In the printing window, you'll be able to adjust how header and footer text appear in print.

Multiwinia is based on the same graphics engine as Darwinia which is a 3D strategy and action game but the developers are keen to stress that the similarities end there. In fact, Multiwinia is as much about making friends online (and then blowing them to bits) as it is about the game itself. You can choose from 6 furiously-paced game types with 40+ maps to choose and from online or single player mode.

Fortunately, there are tutorials available from the start because otherwise, you won't have a clue what you're doing - Multiwinia is not the kind of game that you can just pick up and play. Once you've mastered the basics, you can choose from several different challenges such as Domination, King of The Hill and Assault. Each involves a completely different strategy - some involve simply blowing opponents away while others challenge you to steal territory from your opponents.

The soundtrack is pure Star Wars and if the graphics and sound effects are generally excellent for a 3D game with polygon graphics. However, Multiwinia requires a lot of time and patience to learn how to play the different challenges although it is very well explained via the tutorials

Multiwinia is a great game for anyone that was a fan of Darwinia or likes a strategy game which involves a lot of thought and blood letting at the same time.

Download Multiwinia 1.3 in Softonic

According to the developers, All The Right Type has been adopted in classrooms across the USA because it uses uses tried and tested classroom teaching methods to develop typing skills. All The Right Type instructs students on everything from realistic posture and finger positions to shortcuts to speeding-up your typing.

For teachers, All The Right Type is a very useful resource because it allows you to print certificates and awards for achievement and you get special effects when your student completes a task successfully. All The Right Type encourages students work at their own pace and also automatically grades and monitors students on their progress without the teacher having to be looking over their shoulder all the time.

The graphics in All The Right Type are not exactly great but that's not really what this program should be judged on. You might have tried to paint after being inspired by some music, but I guess you won’t have seen a program that creates sounds, based on your drawings. This is the kind of software I hope my flatmate will never discover!

HighC lets you use different types of special brushes whose signs on the pentagram can be read by the program as notes of a song. The results of my experiments were rather funny and all I managed to get was a sound that reminded me of the ‘voice’ of R2-D2, the little cute robot from Star Wars.

You can even export your creation as an image file, apply sound effects and play around with different types of settings. I can’t guarantee you will move a lot further than the funny little robot ‘voice’ of the George Lucas’ character, but you can try at least. To be more honest, it’s really proper drawings which we are talking about, but more hieroglyphic-style signs or a kind of bad Japanese writing i.

Ten Thumbs Typing Tutor is an instructive program aimed at computer novices who wish to get professional level typing skills through an enjoyable learning experience. It also provides an exciting way for more advanced users to hone their typing skills.

The first thing I liked in Ten Thumbs Typing Tutor (TTTT) is that it holds your hand from the start. As soon as you launch the program a rough looking, yet friendly Viking greets you and will guide throughout the lessons. You can always rely on him if you have doubts or questions. The first exercises are meant to teach you how to place your hands correctly on the keyboard and how to type common letter associations. As you move on the difficulty rises and you are asked to type longer key words at a faster pace.

Where you need to reproduce a certain key combination a pair of virtual hands shows you how it’s done on the keyboard. Whenever you make a mistake the letters will appear in red and you will hear a beeping sound. You can check statistics to see with what keys you make the most mistakes. Not one to overlook a detail, TTTT even gives you tips on how to sit correctly in front of your PC so that you don’t tire too quickly. For the more experienced, you can also set your Words Per Minute count to see if you are typing on par with professional standards.

Once you feel more comfortable with your typing skills you can try them out in the two games provided by TTTT: Safari Park and Brick Factory. Both challenges give you a time limit to type certain key associations. You can adjust the speed to make it more difficult.

The Songseeker option blends iTunes to Ten Thumbs Typing Tutor. This option can detect what song you’re playing and will download the lyrics if you click on the iTunes logo in the right hand corner. The program will display them and you’ll have to type in the correct characters. This is another way of learning how to type, and what’s more, you can enjoy your favorite song at the same time.

Depending on the language you’ve chosen when you installed TTTT, you can set the type of keyboard you are using. For example, English users will have a choice of UK, US and Dvorak keyboards.

If you don’t feel at ease with your typing skills, I strongly recommend using Ten Thumbs Typing Tutor. You’ll be able to learn at your own pace and will improve thanks to a multitude of exercises testing your hand placement, dexterity and speed.

Download Ten Thumbs Typing Tutor 4.7 in Softonic

Whether you choose the Axis or Allies you'll be able to relive all the important battles.

The game has obviously been developed by a team that already has good experience on war games, which gives the assurance of seeing a solid war title. Commander offers six different scenarios and very detailed information and historical references. Strategy gamers will love all the advanced controls and features, like being able to develop new technologies, managing your different armies and taking care of supplies, morale and health. With control of land, sea and air forces, you'll be able to take part in very diverse missions worldwide.

The game board itself is very well designed, although it can get a bit crowded with units. You can zoom in on specific regions and get information on cities and armies. The vehicles and infantry are well recreated and the ability to recruit famous commanders adds a bit more realism to the game. While playing alone vs the CPU will prove enough of a challenge you can also connect with other Commander users online. In terms of performances, the game can take a bit of time to load between turns, but that's something to expect with turn based games.

A challenging hex based game, Commander - Europe at War immerses you completely into WWII.

Download Commander - Europe at War 1.0 in Softonic

If you are in a mess with text encodings, Encoding Master could help! It can convert text in Shift-JIS to UTF-16-LE, or MacArabic to WinArabic, or WinHebrew to UTF-8, or anything to anything else! (at least where it concerns text encodings).

Features:

Convert text to and from any encoding!

Conversion has a "preview" window, which allows you to make sure that you know how your text will turn out.

Preview window auto-guesses the encoding for you! Unsure if you have UTF-8, UTF-16 or UTF-16-LE? EncodingMaster will tell you!

Batch processing! All the features can be done in batches, even on files in different folders.

Convert text in the clipboard.

Handy little up and down arrow buttons lets you quickly test all the encodings to see which one fits your text file.

Strip, or add Unicode BOMs to files.

Detect the type of line endings (Mac lines, PC lines, Unix lines). Convert all line endings to whatever line ending you need. Even detects mixed line endings, (some lines use LR and others use CR!), a common problem when working on source code across platforms.

Normalise according to Unicode NFD or NFC!

Validate the encoding of XML files, even comparing the file's encoding to the xml encoding declaration!

Verify Unicode files, find out if the file is valid Unicode, or non-conformant.

Repair invalid UTF-8 files.

Custom encodings that you define yourself via .enc files. BetaCode support was done this way.

Greek Betacode conversion. (Encoding Master comes with a BetaCode.enc file!)

Nice intuitive, clean and simple interface.

User safety is highest in the mind. No original files are over-written.

Easily remove the old original files that were moved aside, via the "Remove Old Originals" menu, in the "Tools" menu. This is handy to avoid cluttering up your directories with old files. If you want to keep the originals, then just don't open this menu command ;) Encoding Master doesn't force removal of files on you, it lets you do it but only if you explicitly request it.
