Hamachi is a handy tool lets you connect two computers via the internet by creating your own virtual private network (VPN) and protecting it with industry-standard encryption algorithms.

This means that your communications will be safe from prying eyes at all times, creating a private channel between both computers. Of course, Hamachi can also be used in local area networks (LAN) for extra safety.

Hamachi features a simple interface that enables you to create personal safe networks in just a couple of steps. At first sight, it all looks very easy to use. Plus your connection is conveniently protected by an AES-256 algorithm.

Complications arise later on when trying to share files between computers: you'll have to do it through network sharing on Windows because it's not a feature Hamachi itself supports. In the end, I have to admit we were unable to share files over Hamachi during our tests – you know how stubborn Windows folder sharing configuration can get. Oh well, at least we could have a chat – a very safe one, of course.

Hamachi is a great solution to establish safe, private P2P connections between two computers; unfortunately it's not as easy to use as it seems at first sight.

Miro is defined by its developers as "the open-source Internet TV platform". In fact, it aims to bring together a community of broadcasters to create, what it calls, an 'Internet video ecosystem'. But besides all these elaborate definitions, Miro is simply a great application to watch online videos.

Miro uses open protocols to let you subscribe to video channels and video blogs that are fed in via RSS, and uses BitTorrent to download the files. You can also watch videos from Youtube and Dailymotion, or use it to subscribe to a Youtube channel you like, for example. Miro supports video playlists and can resume playback just where you stopped. You can even watch those videos on a separate window while you keep on browsing Miro's Guide

This guide is actually a welcome one, as it helps you get started with Miro and also lets you search and browse the various channels effortlessly. Like other free photo editing programs such as Photoscape, FireAlpaca includes a variety of different tools that let you view, optimize, edit and print your digital images.

Although it's not quite as comprehensive as a paid photo editing program like Photoshop, FireAlpaca comes with a surprising amount of tools, some of which include a color picker and a good variety of special effects and filters.

FireAlpaca's interface is easy to navigate and simple to use if you are familiar with photo editing at all. If you're a beginner, it might take some time to figure out which features do what to your photos. This will just take a bit of experimenting on your part. Fortunately, FireAlpaca also provides helpful tips and hints via pop-up on occasion if you need them.

FireAlpaca makes its money to continue developing the program through advertising. While it's a necessary evil, it can be a little annoying to have to deal with ad pop-ups every time you launch the program.

For a free alternative to Photoshop that lets you edit and customize digital images with ease, FireAlpaca is a solid option.

PDFs are the best way to distribute documents on the Net, particularly if you've scanned one. It's way better than sending a generic JPEG scan.

PDF Studio is easy to use, yet powerful enough to allow you a whole host of editing options that enable you to annotate and edit documents. You can use it with existing PDF documents, or directly using the tailor-made scan-to-PDF feature. Note that PDF Studio doesn't require Adobe Reader to work - it uses its own propriety reader, which isn't nearly as good but does the job.

Editing documents is done via the formatting toolbar across the top. From here you can add text, draw diagrams, add watermarks, apply stamps, and generally deface documents to your content. Released unofficially on its own website, AIM Preview is not yet replacing the old AIM everyone knows and enjoys using. Instead, it seems to be marketed as an entirely new and improved messaging client, with a built-in video chat feature.

AIM Preview's interface is relatively simple to navigate. There are a few changes, however. First, Lifestream, which encompasses the basic status updates your friends saw on their buddy lists on the old AIM, has been replaced. AIM Preview comes with actual status updates now, like what you'd be accustomed to on Facebook.

In fact, Facebook has now become integrated with AIM. You can log in to AIM Preview with your Facebook account, for one. You can also chat with Facebook buddies on AIM Preview, as wells as buddies on Google Talk. While this isn't technically a new feature to AIM itself, it's a lot easier to figure out how to use with AIM Preview.

In addition, you can access chat histories from virtually any device you have AIM Preview installed on as the histories are now remotely stored. While this allows for synchronization, it also might bring up some security issues. There's a news feed that links to AOL-owned Huffington Post articles as well.

The biggest difference is the new availability to video chat either one-on-one or in groups, which is very similar, if not identical, to what Skype offers now. If not for the ability to connect to your buddies via Facebook and Google Talk though, the feature might seem a little useless, considering AIM doesn't generally boast as many users as other IM clients.

AIM Preview adds some new features and functionality, although it still doesn't really compete with video chat frontrunner Skype.

Almost identical to Microsoft Word in appearance, Kingsoft Writer Professional 2012 is a good alternative that's also compatible with Microsoft's popular word processor. If you need to send a file you've created on Kingsoft Writer Professional 2012 to someone who's using Microsoft Word, they should have no problem opening it.

Kingsoft Writer Professional 2012 has all the basic features you expect in a word processor, including spell check, multiple tabs, the ability to encrypt files and a PDF converter. In addition, Kingsoft Writer Professional 2012 has two different interface options for you to choose from. One looks like a pre-2007 Microsoft Word, while the 2012 interface option is a little more colorful and aesthetically pleasing.

There are also some new features that were added specifically to this latest version of Kingsoft Writer Professional 2012. One useful new tool is the ability to adjust your paragraphs via a simple drag and drop action. There's also a a cover pages setting that comes complete with a great variety of templates to choose from.

The nice thing is that if you're familiar with Word, this processor's interface will be easy to navigate since it's very similar. This program does cost money to purchase a license key, however, which open source alternatives like LibreOffice and Open Office do not. It will ultimately come down to preference as to which word processor you choose if you're looking for an alternative to Word.

Kingsoft Writer Professional 2012 is very similar and a good alternative to Microsoft Word for users who want to try something new with lots of the same features.

Weather Watcher Live is a Windows desktop weather station automatically retrieves the current conditions, hourly forecast, daily forecast, detailed forecast, severe weather alerts, and weather maps for over 77,000 cities world-wide. It's configured by default for US users but it doesn't take long to configure it for your own city and location. The current conditions can be quickly viewed on Weather Watcher Live by holding your mouse pointer over the Weather Watcher system tray icon. At that moment, Weather Watcher Live will allow you to automatically retrieve your weather data at a set interval, display the current temperature in a customized tray icon and display the current conditions image in a tray icon. You can also designate which weather information is displayed in the Weather Watcher Live system tray tooltip, convert the weather data using almost any conversion, display a weather map as your desktop wallpaper, log the weather data in any format, export the weather data in any format, customize the look of the Weather Watcher Live interface and icons via skins, and much more. However, is it accurate? Well for my city, Weather Watcher Live's forecasts weren't spot on although neither are the local weather predictions so the program can be forgiven for that but it's easy to use and read and beats trying to catch the weather forecasts on TV all the time.

For fast updates and attractive, easy to read forecasts, Windows Watcher Live is a great 24 hour tool.

Of course, video and audio chatting are now possible in Facebook thanks to Skype integration and Facebook Video Chat simply offers an alternative way of doing it. It simply adds 4 extra icons to your Facebook chat dialog window - a webcam, a microphone, a games icon and a smiley.

The installation of Facebook Video Chat is a bit suspicious however. It tries to install the Babylon toolbar, make Babylon your default webpage and make Babylon your default search engine. However, even if you deselect the check boxes, it still places a Babylon installer on your desktop although doesn't appear to install any of the components.

When you've finished installation, your browser will open automatically with a message of congratulations telling you to log-into Facebook. If you're using Firefox, Facebook Video Chat also requires installing an add-on which it does automatically although this requires re-starting your browser afterwards.

To start a video chat using Facebook Video Chat, just open a conversation window with a contact and click on the webcam icon. A message will be sent to the recipient asking them to initiate a webchat. Obviously, this requires them to have a webcam installed or a speaker installed if you want to start an audio conversation.

The games icon prompts you to start a number of basic board games when clicked on such as chess, darts or snooker. Finally, the smiley icon simply sends a smiley to the recipient - not exactly sophisticated.

Facebook Video Chat isn't really necessary now that Skype is integrated with Facebook but if you're really having troubles with Facebook's integrated video and audio chat, it may be worth a try.

Similar to one of Nexon's other FPS offerings Combat Arms, Sudden Attack is fast-paced and intense. It's also a great game for players who are new to first person shooters, as it comes with a helpful tutorial to get you started. To learn the different controls within Sudden Attack, there's a Boot Camp, which serves as training as well.

In Sudden Attack, the goal is to complete daily missions where you can earn experience points. Via the game's achievement system, you can earn different titles and perks for completing specific tasks within the game. There's also a demolition mode called Prison where the goal is to either plant a bomb or defend a target area where a bomb is waiting to be set off. Additional weaponry can be purchased in-app as well.

Up to 16 players can get in on the action with one another over the span of 38 maps. There might be some lag time while in multiplayer mode due to the server connection, but it was minimal. There are six game modes in Sudden Attack, which offer decent variety.

Sudden Attack's graphics are of good quality but a bit blocky, and the setting is gritty. The sound effects stand up to other games in its class as well.

With lots of weapons and a good variety of game modes, Sudden attack is a FPS that will appeal to a wide audience.

Changing interface styles can be a little difficult for people who haven't tried it before, as it generally involves messing around with scripts and other complicated-sounding things. With a bit of programming knowledge and a tool like Greasemonkey, it's really not that difficult, but it can still be a intimidating for beginners.

Stylish is a Firefox add-on that makes the whole task much easier. It allows you to chose user styles and themes from the Userstyles website and install them directly. The styles allow you to change the appearance of websites, like as changing themes and skins for sites such as Google, Facebook and YouTube. When you open a style on the website, you'll see the option Install with Stylish. This opens a window where you can see what websites the style will affect, preview it and even customize it yourself. This editing will take a little technical knowledge.

If you access Stylish via the Tools > Add-ons window, you'll see that the add-on has added a new section. This will allow you to directly visit the Stylish website, write your own style or check if a Stylish update is available. Obviously, writing your own also takes technical know-how, but there's absolutely no obligation to do the creative part yourself. The styles available on the website are many and varied - obviously, some are more user-friendly than others, but if you have a look around, you're sure to find plenty to suit.
