Instead of displaying data as a desktop notification, YoWindow features a colorful, fully-animated window that displays a nice landscape and changes according to actual weather conditions.

Besides having a very original interface, YoWindow is also quite informative. It displays the current weather situation (sunny, cloudy, rainy and so on) plus temperature (both real and the one it actually feels like), wind, pressure, and humidity. All these conditions are reflected in an customizable animated background – which you can replace with your own photos as well.

YoWindow includes the weather forecast for the next three days. You can click on each day to access the information right away, or move the timeline on top to check how weather conditions change as hours go by – and also see beautiful sunsets and dawns. The program can be set as your default screensaver as well.

Generally speaking, YoWindow is a surprisingly nice weather forecast tool, though I missed having more landscape designs to use as background. Another annoying detail was not to be able to scroll down the list of countries and cities with your mousewheel when choosing a location.

Rainlendar is a lightweight and customizable calendar for your desktop.

When I first launched Rainlendar I was impressed by the widget-like appearance. Widget are small, handy gadgets that can pop up on your screen to show you all types of information, from weather forecasts, to stock charts or the time and date. They are usually small, attractive and very discreetly fit on your desktop. Rainlendar’s elements similarly have that cloud-like feel. The notes, events and calendar windows float around on your desktop and can be moved about your screen and disappear or reappear in a touch.

Rainlendar stands out from classic calendar programs thanks to a highly customizable interface and the possibility to quickly and effortlessly jot down notes and important events. Although it only comes with two different skins, the program offers a link to www.customize.org, where you should find the style which suits your tastes. But Rainlendar doesn’t stop there. You can set up hotkeys to manage Rainlendar at the push of a key and, thanks to various plug-ins present in the program, integrate Rainlendar directly to other utilities like Outlook and iCalendar. Rainlendar is always within reach as a tray icon on your desktop and bringing it up just takes a click of your mouse.

Unfortunately Rainlendar’s real originality is also its weakness. The program offers a wide range of skins but adding these to the program is far from straightforward. You have to drag your downloaded skin into the Skins folder for the Rainlendar program file and then browse to the new skin from the ‘Edit Skin’ option in Rainlendar’s drop down menu.

If you like to keep your calendar on your PC, but find the one offered by Windows too dull, Rainlendar is a good alternative. You’ll enjoy setting your own style and the way it discreetly fits onto your desktop.

Currently is a Chrome extension that gives weather reports with every new tab. Currently will keep you updated with projected weather in your location or from around the world. This basic forecast extension doesn’t have many bells and whistles, but it’s still handy for preparing for the week.

Features

Currently provides the date, time, and weather forecast for the next five days. All of Currently’s data comes from Wunderground. While the website has detailed information about climate, Currently only provides weather conditions and temperature. The extension omits information such as wind speed, precipitation, humidity, and cloud cover.

Currently automatically finds weather according to your IP address location, however you can freely set which city and country is displayed. You can also easily switch back to the default Chrome page to see your most visited apps and links. This is a nice touch that makes it unnecessary to ever disable the extension.

Usability

Currently contains only three buttons within the lower right corner: a link to Wunderground, a tab to Chrome’s default new page, and a settings menu. Currently has settings to alter the system, layout, and style. You can change the temperature between Fahrenheit and Celsius, twelve or twenty four hour clocks, and the city you want displayed.

In the layout page you can toggle animations and if the clock shows seconds. Within the style tab there are tabs to select text/icon and background color. One downside is an annoying bug where setting color will reset the city and vice versa. You will always need to set both when you want to only update one. The extension is overall minimal and intuitive.

Quality

Currently’s appearance is very simple. The text and icons are set to white or black, while the background can be among nine mellow colors. The background will adjust slightly to best contrast against the text color. Currently uses icons to display the weather.

If you aren’t familiar with each icon you’ll need to hover over them to show an overlay. Thankfully, popups, transitions, and other animations are fast and smooth. You will generally not experience performance problems with Currently.

Conclusion

Currently is a nice Chrome extension to quickly find out the weather for the next few days. It lacks more detailed climate information, which would be very helpful in planning out your week. With a simple design and access to the default page, Currently is still a handy extension to any Chrome browser.

If you're looking for a simple to use news app, CNN App for Windows 8 is perfect. It presents news stories in an easily digestible manner, though it could do with some more font options. The interface is nicely laid out but its International section is somewhat hidden.

There is a good amount of content that you can access from the app and each part of the world has its own section. The CNN App for Windows 8 also includes video content but they're all short form clips.

What's missing from the CNN App for Windows 8 is more detailed information like weather and traffic reports. Sure, there are other apps that can do this but it'd be nice to have all this information within one app.

Overall, the CNN App for Windows 8 is a solid reader for news from CNN but don't expect anything more.

Proteus takes place on a single medium sized island. The landscape, inhabitants, and season are all randomly generated on each playthrough. Proteus begins with you floating in the ocean with the island just a few yards away. As you swim to shore each object and terrain you pass will play a uniquely harmonious sound. The hum of leaves falling, muddy trails and icy snow caps will all blend into a symphony the further you explore.

Proteus has a day-night cycle and all four seasons. Whether you travel quickly or stay idle time will move forward. The time of day and weather in Proteus determine what you can encounter and the musical sounds they play. At night you may witness a booming lightshow as shooting stars race through the sky, while the blazing summer morning sun blinds you and beats painful tones. Even with seasonal changes it will generally only take an hour to see everything your world can generate.

Proteus’ visuals are retro pixels: the world itself is rendered as large pixilated blocks and 2D pixels are used for all menus and text. This is contrasted by the fluid animations that bring a wondrous and eerie feeling when a rapid gust of wind blows through trees or a flock of birds soars passed.

There are no goals in Proteus. The gameplay comes from finding all of the unique sights within your world. You could discover a small island full of scampering chickens, an amnions graveyard surrounded by imposing statues, or a tornado that warps you through time. At times you could find yourself chasing a single frog across the whole island as it jumps higher and whistles new tunes. It’s unfortunate that there is no save feature: when you exit a world it will disappear forever. It will be your choice to visit a new world or quit Proteus after one adventure.

Proteus is a great game for anyone looking to explore without the pressure of difficult gameplay or objectives.

For example, XBMC can play CDs and DVDs directly from the disk or image file, most popular video formats on your hard drive, and even files inside ZIP and RAR archives.

If you want it to detect what you have, XBMC will scan all of your media and automatically create a personalized library complete with box covers, descriptions, and fanart. Finally, there are playlist and slideshow functions, a weather forecast feature and many audio visualizations.

XBMC is a fantastic media center although if you don't want to go to the hard work of customizing it, Plex may offer you a better alternative.

If you think that Microsoft Outlook 2013 would be getting some dramatic new features and improvements like the rest of the applications in the Office 2013 suite, you'd be wrong. For the most part, Microsoft Outlook 2013 remains much the same as the 2010 version. Here's what did change:

The entire app has a flattened look, which goes with the Windows 8 design language. The whole application is monochromatic, featuring lots of white and gray with the occasional blue accents. To me, this color scheme makes it hard to differentiate specific elements of the interface. There are no more icons and everything is text heavy. At the bottom, you'll find sections for mail, calendar, people, tasks and more. Gone are the buttons and icons, giving way to a minimalist text look.

There is a touch mode in Microsoft Outlook 2013, which brings up the same menus that it does in the other apps in Office 2013. There is a bar with frequently-used commands like reply, delete, move, flag and mark. This is great and gives Microsoft Outlook 2013 a good touch experience.

You can now pinch to zoom in the calendar to switch between day, week, and month views. If you are in any other section of Microsoft Outlook 2013 besides the calendar, you can now hover over the calendar section to bring up a pop up of the calendar and your tasks for the day. The calendar will also show weather information of your locale.

Microsoft Lync is still fully integrated into Microsoft Outlook 2013 so you can view a colleague's status and start an audio or video call right from within Microsoft Outlook 2013.

While the mail view is a bit difficult to read because of the monochromatic color scheme, Microsoft Outlook 2013's people view is much improved. Contacts will now pull in information from online sources like Facebook and Linkedin if you've tied these services with your Microsoft Account.

Microsoft Outlook 2013 will combine duplicate contacts, creating one contact card with consolidated information. If your contact has a picture, the picture will show up as a thumbnail next to the contact. It's strange that Microsoft didn't include this in the mail view of Microsoft Outlook 2013, which would help visually differentiate between different emails.

Even more baffling is the lack of threaded messages in Microsoft Outlook 2013. You'll still have to hunt for previous emails from a conversation. Oddly enough, Microsoft's own Mail app in Windows 8 and Windows RT features threaded messaging.

Another annoying change is Microsoft Outlook 2013's notifications. There's no way to dismiss them all in bulk so you'll be closing tons of alerts if Microsoft Outlook 2013 comes back online. Microsoft also got rid of the ability to act on an email from the notification, which was a very useful feature.

If you didn't like Outlook 2010, Microsoft Outlook 2013 won't win you over. While there are some useful new features, its bland interface and missing features make Office 2013 feel like an antiquated email client.
