Being an AIR application, Pixlr-o-matic is really nice to look at. Photo editing is divided into three steps. Firstly, choose a filter from the options in the red section, then a secondary effect from the blue area, and finally a frame in the yellow area. You can move back and forth through these stages as often as you want, using a photo stored on your computer, or one taken directly from your webcam.

Visually, Pixlr-o-matic really impresses. The interface includes the app's workbench. The filter area is really cool, with a developing tray with fluid that ripples as you move the cursor over. It's really eye-catching, and also happens to be very easy to use - the perfect combination!

Pixlr-o-matic has limited sharing options - you can save your masterpiece to .jpg or share them on imm.io, Pixlr's own image sharing service. Special effects are categorized such by type ranging from wigs, sunglasses, hats, distortions, animals etc. The effects are not always well placed or positioned however and a watermark saying "manycam.com" appears permanently at the bottom of the screen.

You can also add things such as flags (although not many), the time and date or a text of your choice. The most fun part is changing the backgrounds however which range from a beach, pool or mountain to classic black or white and sepia. The effects don't exactly look realistic, but it's fun all the same.

If you get bored with the default effects included in ManyCam, there are plenty of others available on the developer site for free.

If you've ever used Photo Booth on a Mac, the interface of Video Booth will be very similar. Photos and videos output in the strip on the bottom of the app and clicking effects will bring up a 3 x 3 grid of different effects. There are a surprising number of effects to choose from, even in the trial application.

The effects that included are fun! There are color filters, fun hour mirror, and faux green-screen effects. They work well and produce some silly photos and videos for you to share with your friends and family, though I can see the novelty of Video Booth wearing off quickly.

Speaking of sharing, you can upload your Video Booth videos directly to YouTube. Unfortunately saving your photos and videos is not possible in the trial version, which is a bummer.

Overall, Video Booth is a good application to take fun photos or videos, but they really want you to buy the full version to experience all the features.

YouCam and easily be the main photo and video application for your Windows 8 tablet. It launches quickly and has a ton of effects to mess around with. You can choose frames, video effects, photo effects, and distortion filters.

You can easily switch between taking photos and videos with the slider on the top right. Taking pictures is snappy and they show up immediately in the camera roll. YouCam allows you to add effects to photos and videos after they have been taken.

Other than all the silly photo and video effects, YouCam is pretty basic. There's an eye icon on the top left that allows you to "enhance" your image or video. I found that it just boosts the exposure.

Overall, YouCam is a simple, easy to use photo and video application that you can comfortably use as your default photo and video application on Windows 8. Its not as much of a copy of Apple's Photo booth as Photo Booth for Windows 7 and we appreciate YouCam trying to differentiate itself.

Although its effects are a bit gimmicky, its ease of use and snappy interface makes it a recommended program.

Once installed, launch the program and you'll immediately see the image taken by your webcam. Snap automatically detects your webcam and offers you all its tools to begin playing around. We say "play" because this is what you're going to do with Snap - don't expect to create serious, professional photo collages like you would do with other graphic editors.

Snap is a fun tool, so it's intended to obtain funny photos that you can use to play a joke on a friend, create an original avatar for your favourite IM client or design a custom greeting card. The app includes a variety of filters and effects to apply to your photos, such as night vision, mirror effect, do I look fat?, clipart and animations. Using them is a cinch: just select a given filter, see what it looks like in the preview window and click on the snap button to capture the image if you like the result. Snapshots are automatically saved in a specified folder, but unfortunately you can't select their size or format.

Once you've taken your fun images, you can open them in whatever app you liike, and make further edits or simply email or print them. Bear in mind that you can't do this within the app - it only lets you share on Facebook.

All in all, Snap is an easy-to-use application that can provide hours of fun. Give it a try and you won't be disappointed.

Recording the screen with BB Flashback Express is really easy. The program features a simple menu where you can choose between creating a recording or opening an existing video. If you choose to record, BB Flashback Express will walk you through a step-by-step wizard to configure all the necessary settings: video quality, sound source, recording area…it can even record images from your webcam and has support for multiple monitor configurations.

Editing your captures

Once the recording is finished, you have two options - you can either open it in the BB Flashback Express player, or you can export it to flash video or .AVI. BB Flashback Express player is bundled with the recorder, and will allow you to perform some basic edits of your recording - such as the ability to apply effects, modify the sound, and upload the video to a variety of online services.

This is where BB Flashback Express loses a few points. The screen recording functionality is excellent, but the player seems limited in its scope. Although it looks like a video editor, you can't actually perform edits like cropping or deleting parts of the video. Purely as a screen capture app though, BB Flashback Express is a great piece of software.
